One of the many criticisms leveled at Nintendo in the past few months has been the continued use of the Wii name in the Wii U. Since the original NES, Nintendo has always gone to great lengths to differentiate names between its consoles, but the Wii and Wii U similarities have lead to confusion for most consumers. In a statement to investors, Iwata said:

“We have not been able to solidly communicate the product value of Wii U to our consumers yet, which has been a grand challenge for us.Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product.”

This statement acknowledges that Nintendo realizes re-using the Wii brand name was a failure on their part, but there’s not much than can be done now aside from making sure people know that the Wii U is an entirely new console and not just a peripheral that can be attached to the Wii.

  • Laud

Yup, even though I like the sound of “Wii U” I have to admit it was a mistake calling it that.

Super Wii woulda been cool but I guess it’s too late now.

I’m glad they’re looking for solutions though.

I know this isn’t the place for this but is anyone here a MH3U expert? I have no idea what to do and I don’t know how skill points work or armor bonuses and I think I was supposed to rank up by now because I’m on 4 star quests but I’m still HR1?

    • Nintedward

My personal choice would of been the ”Nintendo Gigatron Ultra”. That said , I also like the name WiiU.

I think it’s funny that people choose to hate on the Wiiu. Let them I say , as they will be missing out on an amazing experience.

    • Adrian

      Wii 2.0
Not a great name, but it would be fun saying “two point oh”. Haha.

    • Fred

I think Wii 2 would have been best. Capitalize on the Wii brand (I know people who don’t even realize that the Wii is a nintendo product), but still distinguish it as a new console

    • Mr. Hobo

Yeah, I just love hearing the miis randomly say “Wii U!” at the start menu.

    • Fred

The real problem that makes people think it’s just an add on is that the Wii did have a tablet add-on and it had a U in it’s name. The uDraw Tablet http://www.walmart.com/ip/uDraw-Tablet-w-uDraw-Studio-Wii-Wii/14977869

      • D2ThaLo305

        That might explain a bit.

    • D2ThaLo305

      Maybe “PROJECT SNES 2.0”

    • Super Buu

Ultra Nintendo Entertainment System (UNES). Tell me this doesn’t sound badass.

      • tronic307

That was actually one of the names considered for the N64, with Ultra Famicom for Japan. That would have made the Gamecube the Hyper Famicom.
Where do you go after hyper?

    • Nothing5555

Yea Nintendo dropped the ball on the naming. While most of the “gamers” know what the Wii U is, the casuals whom Nintendo hoped would also purchase a Wii U still think it is an accessory.

  • STOP with the disney cruise ship marketing then!!!!

  • Michael Ngo

They should have called it the Super Wii. (NES-SNES)

    • DemonRoach

      SWII (SWEEE)

      • MetroidZero

You got no thumbs down? o_o”

    • fireheartis1

That’s a way better name than Wii U. At least they are owning up to their mistake very quickly. Unlike Sony with the PS3 and didn’t own up to it until the PS4 official announcement. PS3 is a cool system but going with the Cell was just dumb. Developers had a hard time figuring out how to port games to Cell. Now their going with PC type technology which will be way cheaper for them to make. Nintendo only took 5 months to admit they made a mistake by naming it the Wii U. Maybe in their commercials they should say something like this; Wii U is a powerful console. It can handle more than the Wii can. Wii U is a Super Wii. Just like the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was more powerful than the Nintendo Entertainment System. Wii U is like a Super Wii it’s way more powerful than Wii and can give a bitter and different gaming experience.

      • Ugslick

That would be a horrible commercial.

    • Would be very cool

  • Cerus98

If they’re so concerned about it then why not just change the name to Wii 2 while the console is still young? Firmware update can change the logo on the menus easily. Actual logos on hardware isn’t really important for those with consoles already because they know what it is and future games can simply be rebranded. It would probably be a lot less troublesome than having to go on an educating campaign.

    • Attaching numbers to a console when a competitor does the same makes it seem inferior. It’s why when the Xbox 360 launched, it didn’t call itself the Xbox 2, as it was a direct competitor to the Playstation 3.

      • Fred

What about NES 6? That’s basically what they did with Mario Kart 7

      • Fred

Yes, but giving it a tablet controller and putting a U in the name makes people think it’s a controller because they’ve seen that.

The Wii had a tablet controller called uDraw Tablet (also a U in the name) everyone wonders how people are confused that’s how they’re confused look at this thing

      • Cerus98

Oh I know. I think Super Wii would have been ideal. I just used Wii 2 as an example for my post. Either would be easy to change IMO. Unheard of obviously for a console to change names but like I said, if they’re that concerned with confusion then change it. Doesn’t matter to me whats its called though, its a Nintendo console so I’m buying regardless.

But really people…4 down votes on 100% neutral post? Y’all kill me.

  • Jeffrey Debris

I never understood the Super Nintendo Entertainment System either, I always thought it was an addon for my old Nintendo Entertainment System. 😛

All jokes aside, I really think the name Wii U was poorly chosen. It would’ve been much better to give the system an entirely new name. Perhaps the same could’ve been said about the 3DS. I know a lot of people in my social circle thought it was a DS but with added 3D. It wasn’t until I explained to them it was actually a new and more powerful system that they understood. Same could be said for Wii U…

  • Billy_Perry

The console should have been called the NES (or SNES) 2.
During the NES and SNES Nintendo where THE company to go to for games, 3rd party and first, they where the hardcore platform. Now, not only would these names sell to the nostalgia of us older gamers, but also define a new console a lot better by putting a number behind it, it would help in illustrating they are making a move into the hardcore audiences once again, and actually build a brand for them, something they have never had in the same way that Microsoft and Sony have.

  • The Mystical One

Just rebrand it Wii 2 and get on with things.

  • JuleyJules

One thing they need to do is get retailers to stop putting the Wii and Wii U together in stores. I was in Best Buy here in Canada the other day and when I looked over you can see the Wii signs with Wii U there. If they send out marketing material to stores it will help. Hopefully new HD games like Mario Kart, Mario 3D and Zelda WW will help as they’ll get the ads going everywhere for them. Honestly, I don’t get why this is so difficult to figure out but the idea below of a firmware update to change the name to Wii HD or Wii 2 would be a good one. After all Sony has PS2, PS3 and now PS4 and nobody gets those mixed up.

    • Fred

One way to do that is quit selling the Wii

      • JuleyJules

True or at least cut down the promotion of it and what’s with the Wii Mini? Did they have to go and release that the month after the Wii U? No wonder there’s confusion.

      • tronic307

They should quit selling the Wii mini.

        • JuleyJules

Agreed. Never understood the point of it.

    • Besides the big U the logos are exactly the same lol. I even find myself having to do a double take when I am in gamestop or bestbuy or whatever other video game selling store.

      • JuleyJules

I hope they figure out some way soon to get word out. Maybe when they’re releasing the big games they’ll step up and have better advertising AND better games to showcase on their website rather than Sing Party!

    • Lord Carlisle

Wii HD would be MUCH worse!

      • JuleyJules

Maybe so but they need to do something soon. Maybe with big games coming in the fall. Hard to tell with Nintendo these days. After all we’re still waiting on update and VC.

  • Rob Lucci

They should call it “Nintendo U”, every console up until the Wii had “Nintendo” in front of the console’s name.

  • Link Slayer

I have had so many people tell me when I say I have a Wii U and its powerfull and great that they dont like the Wii and its just for kids. I had my first experience with someone thinking the Gamepad was an add on. My girlfriends little sister came over and was like o cool you have the new controller for the Wii. Ive had to explain what the Wii U is so many times. I really wish they would have named it someone else. I just dont understand why people are so ignorant to the fact its not a Wii or a Wii Tablet controller. But Nintendo needs to take extream mesures to insure the cunsumer knows. I know because im not the casual consumer I’m a Nintendo fan that loves My Wii U and Nintendo products. This happend with the 3ds at first. People just thought it was a DS that was 3d. They had no idea it was a compleatly new system with more power.

  • iPedro1000

While I think Nintendo can eventually get the message across, this is going to be a handicap going forward. It was a poor decision because core gamers associate the Wii brand with casual gaming but casual gamers are confused by the GamePad. So who are they trying to attract?

Nintendo had an opportunity to rebrand themselves with this generation and regain its standing as a leading console developer in the eyes of core gamers but they missed it.

    Nintendo has two options:

A – Push ahead with the WiiU brand and regain core gamers by releasing a respectable library catered to them while educating Wii owners that the WiiU is a new console.

B- Use E3 as a platform to relaunch the WiiU with a re-branding. New outer shell considerably different than the Wii, and a new name. The hardware would still be exactly the same and WiiU games would still work on the rebranded console and vice versa.

I nominate the name: Nintendo Six

    • Fred

I choose option A, I’d love for them to pump out an awesome library of games (they probably already plan to)

    • Lord Carlisle

I can just see the trolls turning that into “Nintendo sux”.

  • Lophs

    Nintendo Next Gen Meeting:

Old stockholder: Iwata, we want another Wii like success next gen console, nobody is buying the Wii anymore

Iwata: Ok, we will dumb down the power, and add a gimmick like motion controls or something, same thing as the Wii and it will print money, let me consult my engineering team real fast.

    5 minutes later………

Iwata: Introducing the Wii U. Outdated graphics with a new gimmick called the WiiPad. We will also called it the the “Wii You” b/c Apple already trademarked “I”

    Old stockholder: Brilliant!!

    • D2ThaLo305

    • NintendoNoob

You know, people like you don’t understand the innovation and epicness of Nintendo. You will never know the truth hater

    • MetroidZero

      Fail, fail, and more fail.

    • Sony Next Gen Meeting

Old Stockholder: We want a new console that is not a failure to start like the PS3 was and not insanely expensive. Something the customers want

Sony: We will make a new console and completely change the chip architecture effectively killing of any chance of backwards compatibility. Then we will copy Nintendo and use our Vita for off screen gameplay and control. Also copy Nintendo and add in more social network capability. Present on pretty graphics and sequels of our current game lines saying look how pretty it is show nothing of gameplay,

      5 minutes later

Sony: Here is the PS4. The graphics are pretty don’t you see? Oh you cannot play your old PS3 games on here so too bad so sad. We will probably charge $400 for the base unit and up to $600 for premium.

      Old Stockholder: Brilliant!!!

    • fireheartis1

LOL you sure are a dork aren’t you. The power is more than efficient. It’s more powerful than PS3 and 360. It’s more powerful than PS3 by 50% and 360 by 60% that’s a lot of power dude. It cost money this day and age to make it super powerful, and it will make the console way too expensive. I can guarantee the Wii U will be the cheapest console in the 9th gen. This will add to more sales of the console in the long run. It might not put Nintendo at top but it will make them a profit. I can also guarantee that PS4 will be at leas 450.00 and the next Xbox will be at least 400.00. this puts the Wii U at the best price. Microsoft and Sony care way to much about power and in the end it will hurt them more than give them an edge. Plus bro it’s called the GamePad not WiiPad are you freaking kidding me right now. The graphics being stronger than PS3 and 360 means it’s new not outdated graphics. Man people need to do research before making stupid comments. You sound just like Ignoranceiswhatsup bro.

  • Dave_Val

Most of the people knew that this situation could happen. Wii U name is confuse, maybe if the console was called as “Wii 2” or another name could be better, the current name is not helping the console to be sold to the correct customers. The most of us, gamers, know the difference, and we bought the console without any issue, but the fathers, uncles, grandpas that are not well informed and wants to gift the console are facing some troubles selecting the correct console, all thanks to the similar names.

  • bizzy gie

“not just a peripheral that can be attached to the Wii U.” Did you mean ‘Wii’? Because that’s exactly what it is.

  • old_skool

this is not helped by retailers putting wii and wii u games on the same shelf…

  • Michael Ngo

Ever heard of Mario Galaxy, or Skyward Sword, or Smash bros, or Metroid, or Donkey Kong, or anything that a normal human being would know? Go back to your red ring of death you troll!

  • Leave a message…nintendo U

  • Lord Carlisle

I see no reason as to why you had to bring religion into that sentence.

    • Fred

I have no problem with that. The majority of the people in this country are Christian (including myself) it’s not offensive to me to be called a Christian

      • Lord Carlisle

        It’s derogatory and uncalled for.

        • Nothing5555

Will if it derogatory then you are really saying Wii sports sucks since it was use in a derogatory way to describe what christian families do.

          • Lord Carlisle

Uh… no, that was not implied in any way, shape, or form.

      • Billy_Perry

it should be, it is essentially being called stupid.

    • tronic307

      I’m on it: Flagged.

      • Dean Mcnamara

Oh look a Wii U blog….. nobody came here for religious views…… I think they should have called it the nintendo revolution. Use the old name for the wii and it sounds cool

  • Fred

I guess that’s one of our differences I’m the father of a christian family and yes we love playing games together some of our favorites have been

    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    NBA 2k11/13
    Madden 04
    NCAA football 12
Sonic and All Starts RAcing Transformed
    Mario Kart
    New Super Mario Wii/U/2
    Rayman Origins
    Wii Sports
    Wii Sports Resort
    Smash Bros 64/Brawl
    Luigi’s Mansion
    Mario Sunshine
    Tank Tank Tank
    Rhythm Heaven Fever
    Pikmin 2
    Advance Wars
    Zelda 4 swords adventures

  • Veries Seals

No what they should do is simply discontinue the original Wii completely. The Wii U plays the wii games so it will push more sales for Wii U will still selling regular wii software. Then there will be no confusion. I think it is kinda silly to continue to sell two systems and have one to kill off the sales of the newer one. Sale all of the current Wii out of stock and stop making wii minis which have less capabilities as the regular. The advertise that Wii U is new and is completely backwards compatible to Wii. This way regular Wii developers can continue to develop Wii titles and Wii U titles. Integrate the interface where there is no longer a dedicated Wii Mode. Just have them all play from the Wii U interface.

  • Will Carpenter

    nes to snes?

  • tronic307

Wii is the kind of name that grabs you once. At first I hated it, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and before you knew it I wanted a Wii t-shirt. The Wii name really popped in 2006, likely because it was so utterly ridiculous. Now it’s lost its fizz like flat, warm soda.
Tacking a U onto Wii was a bit silly, just not nearly silly enough. Did the entire internet want to die laughing for a month this time around?

    • Johny

still kinda love when developers talk about it in interviews and videos 😀 always cracks me up

  • GuardiansFan

just call it the wii 2 from now on…shouldnt be that hard…leave the systems already build with the name wii u along with the games. Those of us who already have a wii u should be able to understand we can use both wii u and wii 2 games (which really would be the same system other than the name change)

  • Paul

I’ve always liked the Nintendo You, I thought that would’ve worked

  • Nintendofreak

    wiito (wii2)

  • brian murphy

not only the name its the console itself looks the same parents who dont play games or keep up with this stuff wont know what there getting

  • Adam Fox

While I do think it should have been called something besides “Wii U”, I don’t see how it could have confused anyone any more than Nintendo to Super Nintendo….i don’t recall folks getting confused by that…..

  • DigitalBlawks

They should review their past sucessful marketing stradegies like they did with the N64, Gamecube, and possibly the Super and Regular NES era. Also they should study rival companies business stradgies.

  • DragonSilths

Nobody got confused with PS1 being PS2, then PS3, then PS4, nobody got confused with Xbox just adding 360 to the name now 720 most likely. Adding U is the same situation people who think Wii U is just an attachment for Wii are idiots who dont spend 5 minutes doing research or looking for a youtube video that would clearly state otherwise. Gamers know Wii U is a next system. Casuals dont. If we didnt have casuals then this wouldnt even be an issue. But point is the lack of advertisment is the reason not the name. After E3 we will get some better advertisments.

    • Pikachief

Most consumers don’t do research on products. That’s why apple and call of duty have so many sales. Not saying they’re bad products, they’re great, but they stay ignorant in other possibilities and just stay with call of duty and halo for their games and only have apple products because they don’t do research on what they like more.

As a company you can’t expect potential customers to go out and do their own research. You need to present your product to the people in a clear and understandable way.

  • Johny

umm… finally ? i’ve been commenting the EXACT SAME THING.. word by word as in this article like… everywhere… its a fact… and unfortunately .. its not helping nintendo :/
im not saying wii u would be skyrocketting sales if not for the name.. .but still.. it would be much better with a different name.

  • DragonSilths

I fall into neither of those areas. Nintendo is for EVERYONE even trolls/haters who secretly play Nintendo systems in their closet.

  • Joey Perez

they can just start calling it the u… the new wii and it is the wii u.. however its like a short name by calling it the U……. nintendo U kinda like microsoft xbox 360 is commonly just called 360… playstation 3 is just called ps3….. calling it the U would suffice the u… is the new wii … so its the wii u….

  • mike hall

    nintendo U – easy

  • Adrian Brown

they should call it Nintendo Utopia

  • Silent

You have missed out on a LOT

  • D.M.T

LOL you’re a funny troll unlike Ignoranceiswhatsup

    • fireheartis1

LOL I see someone is using the name I gave that guy. It fits him very well I might add.

  • Jon

well, this just shows how stupid the world is and how stupid society has gotten, no one got confused when the Nintendo went to the Super Nintendo but of couse everyone seems to get confused over the Wii to the Wii U. Man, I knew what it was when I first read about it.

  • Pikachief

You hardly advertise it, most people don’t even know it exist. And yes people are confused. I’ve known people who’ve played it for hours and never even knew it was its own console. It’s called MARKETING and you did it so so very well for the Wii. What happened?

    • fireheartis1

LOL this is very true and at the same time very sad. Nintendo needs to kick it in gear with the advertising. If Nintendo steps up on advertising it will sell much better. The Wii U wont get as big as the Wii because of this last five months of no advertising, but I think if Nintendo steps it up a bit the Wii U will gain some sales. At least Nintendo is taking responsibility for their actions. Unlike EA who blames the gaming public for being the worst American company 2 years in a row.

  • fireheartis1

Ha ha being I’m a Christian I’ll take that has a joke and not some lame hatred thing, but dude there are a lot of games you missed out on, and are you kidding me Xenoblade, and Pandora’s Tower do not have generic gameplay. They are some of the most engaging JRPG’s I’ve ever had the pleaser to play. I’ve only got the chance to rent them and I can’t find a decent priced Xenoblade anywhere, but I plan on getting them soon. The Wii had many games with very deep gameplay bro. To judge a piece of hardware over the majority of people who bought it is kind of dumb don’t you think. Plus one more thing about Christian families we do huge each other a lot but not every time we play games or after dinner bro. Enough about my “religion” unlike some people I believe there’s a time and place to talk about God, and on a gaming website it usually isn’t the time and place.

  • Nothing5555

Generic gameplay, bland, not epic? If that’s the case then the same could be said for all games. I mean all you do is sit around looking at images on a TV pressing buttons or wiggling some contraption around. Of course…In my opinion.

  • Tecpedz94

I dont get this though yes i agree that people would be confused and think its the same thing but i mean sony has been calling they console plasytation since the first why dont people get confused with their name ???

    • Dean Mcnamara

When i watched the announcement at E3 I thought it was just a controller for the Wii. Im now typing this off my 32GB Wii U. Once I read up on it I bought it straight away and haven’t regretted it at all.

  • Geoffrey Tasker

I still stand by my statement that simply using 2 instead of U would have been enough…

  • I don’t see any problem with Wii U. The real problem is that it’s not being advertised: this is why people fail to understand it. “Super Wii” would be very cool and bring to mind the SNES, and “Wii 2” would be easier to understand at first glance. But the real problem is the advertising. People could believe that Super Wii was and addon to the Wii too, lol. Like, to give it more power and stuff. The “U” they choosed to differentiate is ok, it’s different, its simple, no big deal.

  • Nicolas Dorion

“great lengths to differentiate names between its consoles” what about NES and SNES?

  • Ducked

Wii U is a good name in my opinion.

  • Damn, wiiudaily is slow, the update is live, and every other site has posted it.

    • Cerus98

Probably a little gun shy after the fiasco earlier this week.

  • Andrew Forza

Super Wii would have went off!

  • I have been an AVID Nintendo fan since 85. With the unveiling of the WiiU, with just the name alone, I was concerned from the get go. Iwata says “some” consumers are confused about the WiiU? The fact is, MOST of the consumers are confused, not “some”. I’ve owned just about every Nintendo system including the WiiU “and want so much to go out and purchase games for it, which to this date I have 10 discs and multiple eshop games, but still, no connect. As much as I enjoy the Nintendo directs, I truly believe that Iwata, is completely out of sync with those who are viewing the videos. Eternal Darkness, anyone remember that one for GameCube? Ground breaking. They (Nintendo) possess’s it, but has become addicted to the profit of nostalgia. I know there is a deep resentment from game makers and I’m guessing the other console makes have spent fortunes not to have games released on Nintendo products which doesn’t help the situation. With the announcement that Nintendo is now not having a public presentation at E3, this is what has finally tipped my hat. I watched the last 2 E3’s with the hope that Nintendo would hit it out of the part, and both times, struck out. Why? Because they became to reliant on nostalgia. I believe Nintendo can improve, but looking into the mirror for those that call the shots it’s required.

  • HJ 612

So true, I talk to friends about the console and they say “Wait, what is Wii U again, is it just a remade version of the Wii?”

  • Ernesto Perez

Wii 2 would have been okay. Not the best but it could have worked.

  • Nintengoth

I do feel the WiiU name was abit meh lol they should of made the console that lil bit more powerful and called it Nintendo Ultra or summin.

  • JessieCatarsis

They should of just kept nintendo revolution

  • Grayson

Or, yknow, just marketed at the same strength as the original Wii. What the hell? For claiming this system is supposed to be their claim back to “hardcore” gamers, and be revolutionary, they sure seem to be treating it as just a peripheral

  • gamesplayswill

I’m sorry wiiudaily but why make a article on this?

  • MichelChartrand

It’s about education and marketing. They’re not marketing, therefore the public is not educated on the differences. People aren’t getting blasted with ads about what the Wii U can do or is, or what makes it different.
Add to that the fact that some sites, like Amazon.ca still have all Wii U games and consoles, in the Wii category. Wii U doesn’t even have its own category, how is someone browsing Amazon going not get the wrong impression? It’s in the Wii category, must be an add on for the Wii.

  • Philippe Corthout

What’s up with all the religion of a Nintendo blog/site?
    Keep your religion to yourself.
