The Wii U GamePad is a wonderful device — a game controller with a high-res touch screen which can be used for all sorts of things, from gaming, to Internet browsing, to video watching etc.

But so far, video streaming to the GamePad was limited to YouTube (which these days doesn’t even work properly), and the official media apps. Now a developer has created a custom Wii U media streaming server that’ll let you stream videos and movies from your PC and Mac to the Wii U and the GamePad.

Check out the tutorial video below:

    Awesome! Now I just need a Internet…
And a little of-topic, have you guys seen The Hobbit? I saw it on the premiere in Norway the 12th and I had to watch it again yesterday. It’s amazing, right?

    • Philip Matich

I was there at the premier. Great film! Just saw it when it opened over here on the 12th. (11th for you guys) And about the article, FINALLY. Next we need a music player!

      • Linskarmo

I’m going to see it soon. Does it stay relatively close to the source material? Because I don’t like those book-movies that painfully alter the plot and details.

        • Lazara the Last

I don’t know how Peter Jackson did it, but the movie is just 1/3 of the book, which is only on 300 pages… And the movie is almost 3 hours long! That makes almost 9 hours on a book on 300 pages O,o
And don’t be afraid, the movie is great and almost everything from the book is in the movie 😀

          • Linskarmo

I hope it’s as great as it should be. I’ll get back to you on my opinion once I see it.

          • Canyarion

There were several additions and changes. Some were done pretty well, others were annoying in my opinion. I hated how they added a pointless battle scene every 30 minutes or so.

All I cared about was the Man of Steel trailer.

    • I’ll be able to let you know whether it was amazing or not, I haven’t read the books and just finished watching LotR Trilogy again, going to the cinema in Antwerp, Belgium tonight to watch the Hobbit. I’m hyped up about it, and looking forward to return to Middle-Earth once again.

Wait. I still opened my Wii U, so if any of you people that have a Wii U please Reply to me answering to this question: Can you play videos from on the Wii U? If you have the answer please answer. 🙂

    •  I tried it lastnight and it seemed to work just fine.

When you’re on the page of the video you want to watch, you MUST do this to play it: Delete “watch?v=” in the url above, then, in the exact same spot, type “embed/”, and enter it in. It will redirect you to a viewable format of the video.

“But so far, video streaming was limited to Youtube (which these days doesn’t even work properly”

I see what you did there.

  • uPadWatcher

    As Borat would say, “Nice!”

    • Ryan Vincenzetti

      you mean very nice

  • Wizard_Dude

What do you mean? I’ve been streaming Netflix, Hulu, and tons of pr0n to my GamePad for weeks — in addition to Youtube. There’s also Amazon Instant Video. :/

         *puts on sunglasses*

        *smirks coolly*

    • AAAkabob

All Pr0n I try to watch uses flash…tell me your secrets!

  • Linskarmo

Interesting. I don’t have many videos on my computer, to be honest, but it could be a useful feature.

  • Jeffery02

I loved how he was watching Tron: Uprising. Anyone else enjoy that show?

  • M S

Forgive my ignorance in this matter, but would I be hosting my content on somebody else’s server? Would this make my files unsafe to put there?

    • yenly

no basically you are the server and the wii u connects to u

  • Brian O’Neill

Anyone know what audio formats are supported on the Wii U or if there is a file size limitation? I have some .mp4 files that don’t have audio when I stream to Wii U (audio works on PC or streamed to an iPad). I’ve tried with both AC3 audio and AAC, but no dice.

  • could I get the link to download it

  • where do I get the prgram?!
