Dec 18th, 2013

Despite this year’s VGX Awards decidedly falling flat, 2013 may eventually be seen as quite a significant year in video game history. This year saw the release of ambitious titles such as The Last of Us and the record-shattering Grand Theft Auto V. It also saw the near-simultaneous launches of two megalith consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One.

It may surprise some readers that the website GameRevolution has named Nintendo “Best Publisher of 2013”; although Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U is currently the highest-rated next gen game, the Wii U has underperformed in sales overall.

GameRevolution’s reasoning for granting the award actually has more to do with the game releases and chart performance of Nintendo’s handheld console, the 3DS.

The gaming website mentioned the “hardware chart domination” the 3DS has enjoyed over the past six months, as well as the quality and quantity of first-party releases on the system: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Zelda: A Link Between Worlds to name a few.

GameRevolution also commended Nintendo’s unique approach to courting third-parties. Citing Shin Megami Tensei IV and Project X Zone as examples, the website contended that Nintendo “proved that third-parties can still succeed on its platforms”.

While it’s great to see Nintendo’s little-handheld-that-could carry Nintendo safely through troubled waters, here’s hoping Ninty will employ similar strategies to help the struggling Wii U.

Does Nintendo deserve this award more than the other publishers who released games this year? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Should that picture resemble GTA V nintendo style. I like it ๐Ÿ™‚ Also is there any chance that nintendo will get the ratchet and clank games to nintendo platforms. Maybe a petition?

    • Christopher Acuna

      Ain’t Happening.

    • Anthony Sibilla

Nope, Ratchet and Clank should stay on Sony consoles only.

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

        • Anthony Sibilla

R&C has always been for Playstation, and should stay that way.

          • mar laguna

Yeah Im with you no other games that is not from nintendo Its sony and Its stays that way

          • Zackary Bruley

Yeah, man. That Sonic guy isn’t on SEGA consoles anymore either, see what happened to him…

            *rolls eyes*

R&C is not going anywhere, but I will say that Platformers sell better on Nintendo.

          • thedeciderU

i think you’re right about platformers selling better (i have not done the research). i just hope with all the platformers being released on nintendo as of late, especially side-scrolling 2D platformers, that the market doesn’t become flooded. 2D platformers are probably my favorite genre of all time, but I’d like to see a wide variety of genres come onto nintendo consoles.

to balance out the variety on the wiiu, nintendo really needs a couple exclusive fps or third-person shooters to lure some not-so-sure gamers. i know there’re are some, but most seem to be multi-platform releases or remakes. i am kind of getting sick of all these remakes of old games. the gaming industry has started showing signs of the film industry. all i have to say about this is: “a couple winners, a whole lot of losers” (to quote george carlin).

          • Zackary Bruley

Rare, a 2nd party company like Retro, used to make this types of games for Nintendo; i.e. Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, etc. This games still by-pass the junk FPS/TPS that are made today. We just haven’t had a company step up to do this yet sense M$ got Rare.

And the reason I believe, IMHO, that a company has yet to bring fantastic FPS to Wii U/3DS is due to the fact that people do not want “Awesome, amazing games that just happen to be FPS” they are buying the next best way to kill each other online.

What I believe Nintendo should do, IMHO, is release a new Turok game, maybe even a HD Turok Trilogy. That will teach all these “Hardcore” gamers what a man’s game truly is!~

            I’m out!

          • Alexander Kleinwechter

The same thing sad sega fans with the sega consoles!

        • Agent721

Its directly published by Sony, via other markers, and is one of Sony’s core franchises. Just buy a PS3 ….they’re bound to fall in price this year even more and it has a great library of games. I’m console agnostic, all consoles have great games.

          • Jon

            They’ve already started dropping

          • thedeciderU

well put. all consoles have great games.

          • alex toschi

So you are not sure wether or not consoles exist?? haha wrong choice of words there my friend :p

        • Daniel Gonzalez

The IP is owned by Sony.

    • Shota

yeah and pokemon on xbox & ps . dream on

    • Cheroth

I would love Ratchet & Clank to be on Nintendo platforms. A Starfox and Ratchet & Clank crossover a dream I wish would come true, but sadly never….

  • gamesplayswill

Oh little Wii U! Keep on crawling! You can make it!

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

Little? Not sure if that is the right thing to say about the platform that releases the top rated next gen game!

      • gamesplayswill

You guys have to evaluate everything I post. XD I meant it as a cute little pikachu kinda thing

        • thedeciderU

we are the internet, and we evaluate and judge your thoughts before you even post them ๐Ÿ™‚

          • gamesplayswill

I think you guys evaluate it before I am even born… o.o

          • thedeciderU

i hope you know i was kidding! haha

          • gamesplayswill

Of course I know! Hahaha, if I was serious they’d have to send me to Arkham. (Hope you get the reference)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I was under the impression this was Arkham.

  • SmashFinale

3DS games this year were phenomenal.
Wii U games were also grea- Nonexistant. Just 3D World. Im not counting an HD Port.
(and don’t say Legends. That’s not published by Nintendo)

    • Lil J Moore

So Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Earthbound, Wii Sports Club, WWHD along with 3rd party titles like Legends, Sonic Lost World, Splinter Cell BL, ACIV, Batman AO, Cod, and Indie guys were Non-existent for a Console in its FIRST YEAR. Yeah.

      • SmashFinale

HOLY FUCK HOW COULD I FORGET PIKMIN 3 AND WONDERFUL 101?! And im not going to count third parties because they are not PUBLISHED by Nintendo.

        • Lil J Moore

So tell me how many titles was Nintendo suppose to make in the first year.

        • Agent721

Pikmin 3 was great. First pikmin I ever played and now I want more. If you’re not into strategy games, fine, but it is a great game.

          • thedeciderU

i’m so on the fence with this one. i’m not sure if i would like it so i don’t want to drop the cash. i don’t sell back anymore because it’s a ripoff. i wish there was a demo on the eshop. it’s intriguing.

          • SmashFinale

I’ve been waiting to play Pikmin 3 since 2005. It slipped my mind there but i do love Pikmin games.

  • Lil J Moore

Nintendo just knows how to make games. This is why I love them so much

    • RockieOllie

      consoles…not so much.
As much as I love them, i have to be honest.

but when it comes to software they have mastered their craft

      • GermGerm

Well, I guess that’s one opinion.

        • RockieOllie

Are you saying you like having hardware that limits the amount of possible 3rd party games that makes it on Nintendo platforms? Not being able to chat with friends over games like Mario Kart?

I don’t get why people take it so negatively when fans want more out of the console they like.

          • Speedy Petendo

This is a big victory for Nintendo. To choose this moment to point out what is missing… it seems ungrateful to Nintendo. That is why you are getting downvotes.
Back to NES Remix I go.

          • RockieOllie

I like how when Nintendo got placed on CNets Top 10 worst list, a lot people were saying “What do they know!” “These guys don’t know gaming” (Not saying these were your words, just something that i have noticed)

But when GameRevolution gives praise all of a sudden they know what they are talking about and are the most credible site on the planet (Not to take away from the award Nintendo has received)

People love to dismiss the negative and hold dear to the positive. Which is why I assume you ignored me saying “Nintendo has mastered their craft” and argued against the critisism

I don’t see how this is a “Victory” why should we care what some gaming website thinks whether it be GameRevolution, IGN or even VGX (What a joke). If Nintendo gives us the best experience shouldn’t it be left to us to decide whose the best on our terms?

Look Nintendo deserves this achievement every bit of it, but lets not ignore what the platform could be.

      • hahahero

whoa, no love from the fanboys

        • RockieOllie

What do you mean no love, I gave them props saying they are masters at their own craft.

          • hahahero

I was referring to your downvotes.

          • RockieOllie

Oops sorry my bad, misunderstanding on my part haha

          • hahahero

            no worries

      You say it !!!
Nintendo is the creator of all the times in the art of video games !

  • Marcus Larsson

Wish Nintendo could release a gta-clone with Mario and the others ๐Ÿ™‚

    • MewThree28

I’ve always had a thought for that. It would be even better than GTA lol

    • Dรกibhรญ wotshissurname

True, but then trolls would lament it for being a GTA clone, which would then spread to become the game’s reputation. Either way, they have published one under the name of LEGO City: Undercover.

    • Prid
    • Mithiragi

Here’s my proposition. Waluigi as a Mushroom Kingdom gangster with Wario as partner in crime. It would be nice to have a game starring Waluigi for once and this sounds like a good direction for him.

  • CEObrainz

Nintendo do great first party, they haven’t changed their pace since the N64. In fact it’s because of certain game series’ that release games yearly like Fifa (just an example) that we expect more from Nintendo per year.

    • uPadWatcher

      CEObrainz… I agree with you.

    • Tim van Broekhoven

  • Agent721

Take Two wins this year, sorry…Bioshock and GTAV. GTAV is game of the year as far as I’m concerned. I’m nearing 100 hours on the single and multi, combined and I’ve barely scratched the surface on the multiplayer. Nintendo’s best games this year were SM3D world and Lego City…the GTA clone.

    • Shota

there is so much to do in gta v

      • Agent721

Right? Its never ending & the online is superb. And it’s no wonder…who are the Houser Brothers biggest influence? Shigeru Miyamoto!

    • thedeciderU

haha a clone. in many ways yes, with a completely different experience (charming and quite funny) i just got gta V so i can’t say much on that one yet. i think i’ll probably always like gta III and vice city the best though, but we shall see.

      • Agent721

It’s an awesome game, Lego City. GTAV is awesome as well.

        • thedeciderU

gtaV (and the series) is funny in its own way. it definitely makes fun of and stereotypes everything. people, pop culture, places, lifestyles. it’s one big joke, really. i always think of it as over the top all-american bigger is better in-your-face. people bitch that it’s so violent, but it’s only to be over the top and a commentary, not to mention just ridiculous. i feel many might be missing the point. that’s my take anyways. and it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

    • NintenScience

    • Javier Smith

I know what you where you’re coming from, Agent721, but just remember that this is based mainly on 3DS and not Wii U.

  • MewThree28

Okay guys, as much as I see people saying R&C should stay Sony, (I’ve only played one of them at a friends before), fine, that’s totally cool. But I do not want to see people say that Mario or Zelda should be on a Sony console, Oh and especially not Smash Bros. If Sony fans want a Smash bros for PS3, then go get PS All Stars (the biggest rip off imo)

    • thedeciderU

i thought it was a ripoff initially too, and in concept, it is. i heard the game modes and how it’s all balanced set it apart though. i have not played the game, but read a number of reviews/forums.

      • MewThree28

You know, I don’t really buy games for my PS3. The only games I own for it are the typical COD and GTA. So that’s why I havent really played much of Sony’s games. And I don’t have Ghosts or GTA V. Waiting on getting a Wii U and some of the awesome games on it.

        • thedeciderU

i have a ps3, and just bought it in the spring, mainly for the last of us, and to play with my girlfriend’s bro online since he lives very far away. i own the uncharted trilogy, the last of us, battlefield 3, heavy rain (which i enjoyed), and gta V (i played III and vice city on a sony console, so i wanted to keep the tradition going).

i highly recommend the wiiu. i bought it day one, and there were many things that were annoying that are now fixed. in addition to the now steady lineup of high profile games they’re rolling out, the virtual console has several major classics to play, all with built in saves, and since it’s nintendo, you can play with one of about four or five different controllers/combos. the value is high with their newest bundles.

  • LopsidedPasta

I’m really surprised to see this, but in a good way. I kind of thought that Sony might take it, but I guess TLOU wasn’t enough. With the releases of Smash, X, Mario Kart, Zelda, and various other strong titles, Nintendo should be more than capable of taking 2014 by storm.

  • Rabbi Bongstien

That’s cool! I think we get so caught up talking about consoles that handhelds get lost in the conversation, but yeah, 3DS be killin it in 2013! And the eShop dude! I have high hopes for Wii U next year. PS3 and 360 had some good last games but yeah, 3DS had the best year hands down.

  • Daniel Schwarz

It HAS been a great year for the 3DS. I have to say that Ubisoft also released a ton of great games this year though, including Rayman: Legends, Splintercell, and AC4. Shame Watch Dogs was delayed. Nintendo will always be my favorite, but I like what Ubi is doing as well.

  • Nicolas Dorion

uhm, still no articles on Hyrule Warriors? It was announced today!!!!!

  • X3Charlie

Anyone noticed how much the hype has died down since the PS4 and Xbox released. If I were them I wouldn’t be so cocky, they could very well see their sales drop off after the diehard fans have all gotten theirs.

    • thedeciderU

they just don’t have games right now. everyone was so quick to take a shit on the wiiu, but it had a better launch lineup than ps4 or xbox one. sure, the graphics in a couple games are quite pretty, but nintendo kills it in the gameplay dept., and most of their games from this past year are gorgeous. i’m wondering when sony and microsoft’s consoles will have their power maxed out. it seems that all their developers want to squeeze every ounce of power out of it, and it seems like they might already be close from a few things i’ve heard. i’m not a developer, so it may be nothing more than hearsay,

  • Steve Rees

    Yes! Simples

  • Diogo Zacharias

Nintendo do always great in handheld’s sotware, but lack efforts in bring something really great that could be done on their on home consoles… It’s just about 10, less, games that do really good in an entire generation of Nintendo’s home console since N64. They have the best designers on their side, but need to cut the strings. They could REALLY improve their momentum creating something NEW with their unic and creative minds, without the cartoon-like art of all of their games, and puting efforts on really incredible art and/or reallystic graphics, on a game to make their own franchise of a simulation racing game e/or a FPS for a more mature audience. Using the game pad on extremely inovative ways being the only way to play the games on the single player/campaign mode and using the basics configurations on that style of games on the local/online multplayer mode.

  • Simon Stevens

I’ve lost track of all the games they brought to the table acros the Wii U and 3DS this year but I don’t remember even once ever saying “this game is terrible”, everything has been 8 and onwards out of 10, it’s been an amazing year of Nintendo games, Super Mario 3D world being the standout with games like Pikmin 3, Fire Emblem awakening, Luigi’s mansion 2, both Zeldas etc, I think it’s fair to say Nintendo are the number 1 dedicated games publisher in the business, so much so, you have to buy their hardware to play their extensive library of games, for what they lack in third party, they make up for in first party and third party exclusives, I’m convinced one of the big reasons Wii U has had a bad year in sales is due to how well the 3DS has done with all the exclusive Nintendo content available on it, if you had to choose at this point, 3DS would probably come out on top, When you consider Nintendo sales on the whole, it’s been a fantastic year, and has beaten everything else hands down with no signs of slowing down, Nintendo will come out of this generation smelling like roses, I 100% believe that.

  • YogiGRB

i love the artwork in that articlepicture, the tattoo in mario’s neck and luigi alll grown-up packing a gun

    • Asavarii

      I’d buy that game ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • InterTreble

Even EDGE said so. You’ve read right, EDGE. In the world of videogames, videogames are the key point, not hardware, not RAM, not cores. Who tells you the contrary is just somebody who has no games in its arsenal which can even compete with one of Nintendo’s masterpieces.
