Wii Shop Channel shutting down at beginning of 2019

    https://www.nintendo.co.jp/support/i...2017/0929.html
Thank you very much for your continued patronage of our products.

We have decided to gradually terminate " Wii shopping channel " that you can use with Wii and Wii U (within Wii compatibility function), which started in December 2006, as described below.
You can add points until March 2018 and you can spend them until January 31st 2019. They also say they'll refund unused points, but this is Japan so we don't know if that'll carry over to other regions.

Nintendo are stupid for not having Miiverse on Switch.
It would have been used very much.

Now that you mention it, I will kinda miss Miiverse. Sure, it was stupid and just downright toxic at times (Smash Bros. Community, anyone?), but you generally could get help if you got stuck at a certain point in a game. They did kind of throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. It used servers operated by GameSpy and when that shutdown in 2014, Nintendo decided to shut down all Wii and DS online multiplayer as well instead of migrating it to either another service or their own servers.

You might be thinking of the DSi Shop that has been in the process of shutting down since last year. It stopped accepting new purchases in March and, unless I missed the news, is pretty much only open for redownloads right now. It, like the Wii Shop Channel, is planned to be shutdown completely.

Surprised to see it was still up.
I guess that in a lot of areas like maybe south america the Wii is still being used as people's every day console.
But then again I just assumed those who were were pirating the software.

There are a lot of Wiiware games you can't get anywhere else unless you pirate. I have bought a ton of games on the service, and would have bought more were they made available. They would do weird stuff like release Golden Axe on the on Genesis, than two weeks later release the arcade version, with no discount or bundle option or anything.

Why the hell hell would I buy almost the exact same game a couple of weeks apart?

Anyways, I might still buy the original Sin and Punishment, and I think it's Wonder Boy 6? That was never released in NA but an English language version is available on the service. I wonder if this is leading up to a Switch VC?

Interestingly, this is also happening not too long after the Dolphin devs made it accessible from the emulator. Probably not related, but pretty sucky for the Dolphin devs who made it possible lol.

The thing I'm not thrilled about is that all those Wii Ware and VC games are gonna be wiped from existence and unobtainable. There is a complete online backup (that I am not linking), which will be helpful when these all go down. I guess that's the risk of digital only content, it has to be left to the pirates to preserve it.

It's not the previous 10 years that matter for preservation. It's being able to access these games 10 years in the future. It's a piece of gaming history that will be inaccessible by legal means.

Are they wiped off your hard drive when the shopping channel goes offline? And are the few ones not on Steam (where the emulation is better) not available on ebay? The Wii's job was never about preservation - not unless you count keeping grand parents occupied... a waggle a day, etc.

I guess just being interested in video game history and obscure, retro things right now makes glad that I'll be able to look back at some quirky WiiWare games in 20 years thanks to backups. They're not terribly special for the most part and the quality can vary a lot, but it's an interesting part of Nintendo's history that you'll never find on eBay or in a pawn shop. Nothing wrong with not caring about them. It's obvious we have different interests on the matter, and that's totally ok.

Lost Winds is a series that needs porting. Thoroughly enjoyed that and it was actually a new game concept. One of the best on the Wii Shop.

Since I don't disagree with any of this, I don't see how we have different interests, especially since I'm a pretty serious Wii U collector and have rather a lot downloaded from the Wii Shopping Channel for the very reason that the Wii itself was such an anomoly, or seen as one, and a huge curio item. I just feel the availability of these titles being up to 10 years is more than enough time to buy them. It's not as if people buying them online digitally weren't aware they were buying digital games on the internet - it was never going to last forever and a decade (plus over 6 months closure warning) is pretty generous. The only crime for me is the lack of a sale - I'd hobestly love to buy every since last game for very similar reasons that toye state. So, sorry if you think I was being a bit flippant - I probably was mind you, but not my intention to dismiss.

This is one of the prices you pay for console gaming instead of PC gaming. Console generations don't last forever, and they're only going to support 2 generation old consoles for so long before they move on. Best to just get into PC gaming if you want digital downloads to last longer.

Or just keep your old systems with all the downloads on them instead of getting a heartless emulation machine AKA PC

Can you add funds to your Wii Shopping Channel on the Wii U from your phone? I don't think I'll be flying back to the UK where my Wii U is, but I'm debating whether or not to have one last huge Wii shop splurge on games I'll never play (I'm being serious).

It is sad seeing services for it being discontinued. Last year, Youtube support ended because Google wanted to phase out device support for devices that was made before 2012.
