I finally beat Skyward Sword. Way better than I thought.

This six year old game isn't bound to spark much of a conversation amongst you guys n' gals, but since I've missed out on any discussion about the game I'm hoping those of you who have played it will chime in. I'll try to keep this short:

I first bought Skyward Sword in 2013 and got about 20 hours into it. I got a bit lost in a dungeon and then bought my Wii U, which made me lose interest altogether in Skyward.

Since many of you are enjoying BotW and I don't yet have a Switch, I thought it was stupid to think I'm missing out on a new Zelda game when I still never finished the last one. So I started a new file, got about 10 hours into it, and eventually decided to give up. It just felt like a chore trying to trudge through some parts if it, especially since I played all those parts 3.5 years ago. I just had no motivation.

Having given up I decided to watch some summary/spoiler videos to see what I was missing out on. Something about watching those videos gave me the drive to suddenly pick it back up and finish it. Just force myself to do it.

I'm so glad that I did. After about 45 hours of gameplay, I beat it and now deem it as one of my favorite Zelda games. I have no qualms with the motion controls; in fact the motion controls work really well and swordplay is a blast.

Also, everything I heard about its repetitiveness wasn't really true. Sure, you keep going back to the three surface areas again and again, but only once did you actually got back to the same dungeon (SkyView Temple). It was more like a Metroid game having new abilities that allowed me to access new parts of old areas. Really not much backtracking.

Best of all, the story was super awesome. Giving a whole back story to all the Zelda games made me appreciate the other games even more. Knowing how the Master Sword came to be, knowing who Zelda really is (the goddess Hylia reincarnated as a mortal), etc. adds so much to the franchise in my opinion.

    It's in my top 3 Zelda's now.

Dude, until BotW, this was my favorite Zelda game. And even now, I still think it has the best story. The cut scene at the end of the game is going to be very hard to top. It's an amazing game. I hope they HD'ify it someday.

I can't believe you were able to track down Skyward! Not only that but you beat him to a bloody Demise. I didn't have the heart container to do since he was so popular. I feared the backlash that would be handed down by the mods. But since this forum is dying a slow painful death I guess now would have been the best time to preform a Skyward Strike.
SO GOOD JOB! I salute you!

Edit: Oh you were talking about the game.

    Oooops.

    Well never mind me.

Skyward Sword is pretty awesome. Not a torch puzzle to be found, and a fun combat system that differentiated itself from WW and TP before it.

I don't know when you plan on playing BotW, but with you playing them so closely you'll probably notice more then others how clear it is that BotW was an expansion of a lot of the ideas they had in Skyward Sword.

Consider it a Deep Impact vs. Armageddon scenario. The similar thing that came out later was better. :P

Meanwhile Fi is gliding around the water nearby and I have the Master Sword. Ok, explain this then you old hag.

Congratulations C-Threep! SS is a very underrated game IMO. It's not perfect, but it was clear that Nintendo was trying to move forward in many respects, and a lot of those worked out well.

And if you are dying to play BotW, just get the WiiU version. I'm told the differences are pretty minimal.

I've already got the Switch version from the forum giveaway that Cloud did, so I've decided to just stick it out.

Yeah, she's like "you got here too late. I'm not sure you are the chosen one." And I was like 30 seconds behind them arriving at the little goddess statue thing. Jerk.

And speaking of Fi, she really didn't bother me that much. But I did get annoyed every time she warned me my hearts were low or when my batteries were low. That info is already flashing on the screen with beeping sounds, no need to interrupt me and be Captain Obvious.

Did a Let's Play help sway your decision or just a lack of completion?

I first watched a 20 minute summary of the story by some guy that just thought the game was "okay" and he made some good points about what is annoying about the game.

So then I watched Peanut Butter Gamer's video about why he loves the game and after watching it I reeallly just wanted to push through the stuff I found kinda boring and just play it all to experience the story. The story, as explained in his video a bit, really is what drew me back in.

Skyward Sword had the honor of being the only Zelda game I've played that I lost interest in when I'd gotten through literally 99.8% of the game. I bought my Wii U and I just stopped playing it because I got rid of my Wii. I started a new game during one of the many Wii U game droughts and overall I'm glad I did. I hated the silent realm with a passion but the overall game was generally fun

Silent realm was awesome. I typically did it in two tries, so it wasn't frustrating - just tense and fun.

SS is the 6th best Zelda so it's amazing. I loved the Silent Realms too. Oh, and the Ancient Cistern is one of the best dungeons in the series.

I regret never completing this game. As much as I liked the motion controls I found it very hard to play unless you were direct inline with the TV which I am never that way playing due to my living room layout. It the made a HD version with the switch and gave it control with the Pro Controller that has motion ability for aiming and puzzles I would buy it again and play through it.
I brought the Awesome. What did you bring?

So C-Threep, since you just finished one Zelda and have another that you can't play, what's next on your list?

I'm genuinely curious, I don't mean that in a snarky way.

For me, I recently broke a bone in my foot and am laid up for six weeks. If you have a recommendation I'm interested, we seem to have broadly the same tastes.

I'm buckling down on BotW but I like to take breaks. Maybe a LEGO title? SEGA Bass Fishing? Manhunt 2? I'm open to suggestions.

Well, I'm roughly familiar with every vendor, but right now I have a Wii, WiiU, Gamecube (via the Wii) and a 3DS original model.

That said, of course I'm a big fan of retro games and the VC. I prefer action over story, but a good story can certainly get my attention.

The reason I ask is that I have a bunch of games that, like C-Threep, I have started and somehow ran out of enthusiasm for at some point. So I'm looking for someone to provide a perspective on why I should pick up game "X" and give it another shot more than anything else, if that makes sense.

Any suggestions or pointers are welcome. I have a lot of time to kill.

    a Action/Arcade game I'll suggest!
Madworld! This game is totally awesome. It's on the wii made by platinumgames. The game is mission-based so all mission are different. You need to get points to go to the boss stage, for finishing the mission. But to get points you need to kill enemies, and it's here that's fun. you can kill mobs in differents way like putting them on a bus or throwing them into a big saw.

edit : I've bought it for 5$ can...totally worth it!

That's a really jacked up list, man. I'm not completely sure where I'd put BotW yet, but I think out of those games, my list would be more like:

    1. BotW
    2. SS
    3. WW
    4. TP
    5. OoT
    6. Minish Cap
    7. ALttP
    8. MM

I had to put Minish Cap in there because it's better than a couple you listed. I'd probably even rather play that turd Phantom Hourglass than Majora's Mask.

What games do you already have for the Wii U?

Okami and No More Heroes are great Wii games. Try Killer7 on Gamecube too.

Sorry a out your foot; that sucks. My wife had a baby last week so I still have another week off, so I've got a bit of free time too. I'm playing through Earthbound again and really enjoying my second time around now that I know what the heck I'm doing.

And I'm wanting to play Twilight Princess again, as it's been about 5 years. But I'd rather play the HD version, which I need to borrow from my bro-in-law. I played about 3 hours of the Wii version a few days ago to see if I was really in the mood to play the game for a second time, and it turns out I am. I remember it being really enjoyable.

I don't know how they'd manage to make it without motion controls. So many battles, bosses, and puzzles are based on the exact way you swing your sword. If the joy cons could make the motion controls even better (no delayed response to swings) would that make it more appealing? I'd love an HD remake with instantaneous controller reaction and no delay.

Finally another person who has played SS recently enough to know a remake with standard controls would be the same as making a new game haha

Yeah, there really no way to make it with motion controls unless you change a lot of gameplay mechanics, puzzles, and boss fights.

I agree with Woody, that list is jacked up.

Myself? Anyone who lists OoT or Super Zelda as the best isn't a list I can take seriously.

If you want to list MM or say WW as a personal favorite I can respect that, IMO you put a lot of thought into it, and I'd love to hear the reasons, but IMO that's the "safe" answer.

What about Minish Cap? That's a cool game! Or the first two? Or Four Swords?

I wonder if this might be an age thing?

Excuse me, there is a cloud I need to go yell at...

Hmm. I do like me some OoT, but not that much, I'm afraid.

    Popular opinion =/= safe.

Ocarina changed my life dude. It took a hobby I was casually into and turned it into a passion.

OoT is really low in my list, it was my fifth zelda game...I've played all zelda before it...some people I know called it Zelda 1 XD .

favourites? Either L'A, LttP or Oracles of Seasons/Ages.
3D favourites? mmm Skyward Sword, MM and WW is close.

OoT lacks some stuff...like the hyrule theme in hyrule field, which Majora's mask had it for Termina. Hyrule field feel bland...they used it like a...hub/connector to other area. LttP have weapon and armor upgrades.
