    Disney Infinity and Amiibo

Hey guys, this might be a stupid question but I have looked all around the internet and have not been able to find an answer. Mind you, I don't yet own a Wii U so I don't really know much about amiibo. Anyways, my question is, does Disney Infinity support amiibo on the Wii U? For example, could you use Mario in the game if you had his amiibo? Sorry if it's a dumb question, but really appreciate any help given.

    No.

Disney Infinity only supports Disney Infinity characters.

Unfortunately they do not. However, amiibo support a wide range of Nintendo titles.

No. Disney Infinity is sort of a mess from a consumer stand point. If you PM me I'll try to explain it, but it's complicated. Short answer is Amiibo and Disney Infinity characters are not interchangeable.

The only game outside of Nintendo titles that has anything to do with Nintendo amiibo characters is Skylanders Superchargers. However, there are only 2 and it's only because the base switches them to work as amiibo on certain things and skylanders in Superchargers.

Right, in the cases where you bought a new character that was not in 1.0 or 2.0, you couldn't play them in the games they didn't exist for.

    Which makes sense.

You're referring to playsets or characters then? The playsets take like 30 minutes to complete but aren't forward compatible, but the characters are all forward compatible.

and not all take 30min to beat, have you tried Pirates in 1.0? that has like a semi open world to go through lol

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys, and everyone was real nice about it which is great to see. I was planning on getting a Wii U soon and Disney Infinity if I could use amiibos on it. Might still get the game, but a little disappointing even though it is understandable.

@ Cloud Right. DI one is Pixar/Johnny Depp focused. DI two is Marvel superheroes. Part 3 is basically Star Wars and Inside Out, with a Splatoon rip off, a decent kart racer (or so I hear) and some other Avengers content apparently an online 4 player battle mode, but I don't have it yet so don't quote me on that.

The most important part of Disney Infinity is having the bases/keystones. Each one is tied to a specific property, mostly. So you can have Spider Man, Venom, etc. but without the Spider Man keystone you can't play that portion of the game, it's essentially locked. Ditto for Pirates of the Carribean, Toy Story, etc. Disney Infinity 1 comes with a keystone that unlocks Pirates, Monsters Inc, and the Incredibles, but that's really an exception. In addition, some chatacters in DI2 can "jump" into other franchises if some tokens are collected. For instance, Iron Man and Nova can be played in the Guardians of the Galaxy playset.

Additionaly, some characters are just "loose" by which I mean they aren't tied to any specific playset/theme. So Donald Duck or Wreck it Ralph don't have a dedicated game portion per se. However, you can buy small level packs via hexagonal power discs. These are generally very cheap, but I'd suggest buying them secondhand because they were originally released in sealed bags so you never knew what you were getting. Besides that, there are discs that might add a new costume or give a stat boost. These are generally inconsequential.

And then there is the toybox. The toybox is user generated content you can create or share or simply play online. So far as I can tell, the figures are forward compatible. That is, I could use Mr. Incredible in the Disney Infinity 2 toybox as he was a generation 1 figure, but I can't use the Hulk in Disney Infinity 1 toybox as he was a generation 2 figure.

So yeah, Disney Infinity can be complicated!

Amiibo conversely are pretty simple. Instead of being essential for one game, they are semi useful across multiple games, some more than others. Probably the biggest game to use them are Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario Maker. In Mario Kart and Mario Maker they are basically just costumes. In Smash Bros they are actually characters you can train, alter, save and spar against. They learn very quickly and fight dirty IMO, but it's entertaining. You can take your Amiibo data with you to a friends house as well. However! An Amiibo can only hold 1 game data at a time. So you can't do multiple save files on 1 Amiibo. If you have a Mario Amiibo with Smash data on it and want to use him for another game for instance you may have to wipe the data and restart. This doesn't seem to extend to unlockables or costumes though.

Amiibo generally are better looking production wise, but the poses are often asinine IMO. They are higher quality but tend to cost more and can be more difficult to find. DI characters are a few bucks cheaper and are everywhere, with a few exceptions like Hawkeye or Mrs. Incredible. However, they are a bit more...rubbery? And the sculpt style might turn off some folks. I'd suggest starting out small and going from there. And if you have more questions please feel free to ask! Hopefully that helps!

Disney Infinity was such a missed opportunity. They could have made the toybox create schtick more of a Theme Park like game, and we ought to have inhabited the actual Disney worlds according to characters you could play as. I might go back to try the Star Wars one though.

As it stands right now, the Toys to Life genre is loosing steam. Disney Infinity is gone. Activision is showing more interest in remakes, and Lego Dimensions is done. amiibo seems to hopefully get a resurgence in the form of Smash Bros on Switch.

People buy more Funko POPs than amiibo at this point.
