    Revisit.

Have you recently played any "old games" and if so what are your thoughts and opinions? Do they hold up? Are they still fun? Has your opinion changed at all? If you liked a game five years or five months ago, do you think they are still good? And if so, why?

    What keeps you coming back?

I mentioned it in the Top 10 thread, but I played through Donkey Kong '94 on 3DS Virtual console this year, and it's fantastic. The music, the level design, the animations, it all holds up (though I'm sure these nostalgia goggles are firmly planted on my face).

One thing I did find surprising is that the overall game felt easier than I remember; though I played through it multiple times when I was younger so it may just be that I already knew everything I had to do (and was using maneuvers the game doesn't teach you til later); although the final boss was harder than I remember.

It's just as good as I remember when I was younger, and it's still up there as one of my favorites. An absolute classic in my book.

Funny this thread comes up, as I think it's a great idea to go back through your library of games and play something you haven't played in a while. Recently Been I've been getting back into Smash U (and some 3DS here and there), what with Cloud being released. One of these days I should go back and Play Mario Kart 8 and/or 3D World...

I bought some n64 classics a few months ago after losing them, mainly Winback and Jet Force Gemini.

Winback is a Metal Gear type game and it is awesome! Cheesy dialogue but the gameplay is fun and interesting. Still holds up today in my opinion.

The plot of Galaxy 1 is awesome (the sub-plot with Rosalina's books) but Galaxy 2 looks prettier. You don't need to play both imo.

Apparently Galaxy 1 hits the eshop tomorrow! I recently started replaying Injustice even though I've beaten that game many times and it holds up pretty well where it counts, although I'm tired of the butthole Superman trope. Epic Mickey 1 and 2 seem like they need a more focused playthrough as well.

In ten years it will interesting to see what is considered "classic" games you keep going back to over and over.

Had the chance to revisit SMG 2 after buying it on the Wii VC. My initial impression, to my disappointment, was that it wasn't as good as I'd remembered. After the first two galaxies, though, I began to really enjoy it. It's currently the only game I've ever 100%ed.

Also went back to SotC on hard mode after learning that

    Still an amazing game, imo.

Every once in a while I'll go back to Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros. Both are still awesome.

Shadow of the Colossus? I've always wanted to try that.

I might actually replay SMG1. Wandering around the observatory was very irritating IMO, so I never quite beat that game. I much preferred SMG2 since it omitted the Rosalina crap and made it very clear which way to go and what to do next. Maybe that's why SM64 and SMS never appealed to me a whole lot.

And while I have put down Hyrule Warriors for a bit, I really made very little progress on the challenge maps. It may be time to revisit that.

Sure, but many people today seem preoccupied with what's new, what's next, etc. And that's fine, but I feel like many people play many games today only in a cursory manner, or they play so obsessively they just burn through it.

My intent here was to get people thinking about games that maybe deserve a bit more attention and haven't been adequately explored. I'm guilty of getting into my "ass groove" and replaying the same stuff over and over again. I'd like to finish LEGO LotR someday for instance, but I keep replaying Excitebots over and over. It's fine to have favorites, but why not explore and possibly discover new favorites?

Rogue Squadron II has sat on my shelf for years and I only just got past the trench. I started playing it a few weeks ago and couldn't believe my neglect! Such a good game!

On the other hand, I went back and played Sunshine and found the controller mapping to be jarring and outdated. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm hoping for a remake, but I may eventually reacclimate and just play it on my GameCube.

Being stretched a bit thin on my games budget, and wanting something to fill the Fast Racing Neo gap in my life, I brought out the Dreamcast and 64 (I parttime live in 2 places) and have been playing Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. It holds up extremely well, but the cut-scenes in the Dreamcast version are cringe worthy.

I think the aesthetic holds up nicely, but it could stand to be sped up. A lot of the animations take too long, and you can't really skip anything.

My opinion really has not changed. I've always had a high opinion of Atlus as an RPG producer. Their willingness to experiment and go after smaller developers with more niche titles really stands out to me. The Ogre Saga is among my favorite RPG franchises, being more tactically and strategically oriented. They also have less-than-orthodox storytelling and routes. They also fall into a category of gaming that I tend to be fond of - easy to learn and difficult to master.

I cannot leave these characters alone. They are unique with distinct personalities and traits. They have goals and agendas to achieve them. Little is straight forward, and there are plenty of plot twists in even a "simple" GBA game. It's easy to understand what motivates each character, and a lot of background goes into every single story character - including villains.

Plus, exploring different routes opens up new story information you might not have known or even guessed playing through the first or second time.

... I want this game on Virtual Console, so more people can enjoy it!

I actually played ZombiU last night because there was a Walking Dead marathon going on and it got me to play it again. I still think it's one of the best designed games on the Wii U to date. I highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't played it.

Naw, it's on the 3DS eshop. It's the basic arcade DK game, then it tears the roof off the sucker and throws in something like 100 more levels. And better yet, it expands greatly on Mario's moveset while retaining the classic DK feel. So Mario can flip, walk on his hands, carry stuff, swing on wires, etc. It's an action puzzler and it's only a couple of bucks.

    It's awesome.

I was new at Playstation back when I played them, I was used to silly Nintendo games and everything looked weird to me at the time

When the FF7 steam port was released on the PS4 (with trophies, woooo) I played it and got the plat. Since it is my favorite game I am biased, but it still holds up well for me. I think that graphics can be very overrated sometimes, and I also think it can be hard to find games with stories as great as some of the games back in the day. I am planning on trying out Parasite Eve soon, as I never got to play it and have had it recommended to me by a couple of friends.

Manic Miner and Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver are right up there on my list! Crash Team Racing springs to mind too.

I revisit old games all the time (When I'm not stuck playing XCX). Most of the games still hold up today, some I'd arguably say is better than most games are today. While nostalgia might be influencing that to a certain degree I feel like games in the past was purely meant for fun. While nowadays a game "has to" look or play in a certain way. To clarify though, I'm not saying that games today are bad or anything, there's a good bunch of enjoyable games out there.

Interesting point, Ninja Monkey. I certainly agree there are trends in gaming and anything that isn't trendy gets dismissed. I remember after Street Fighter 2/Mortal Kombat hit everybody wanted more fighting games, even though most of them were ass. The Genesis had a glut of sports games and space shooters. Now it seems to be " open world, or sandbox, or immersion" as the key phrases. Which is fine to an extent, but maybe the industry and the fans go too far sometimes?

It's quite sad how it all works in practice, for better or for worse. Trends doesn't always mean a bad thing per see but as you said yourself " anything that isn't trendy gets dismissed" that's for the most part true both now and in the past. In my opinion though if a game is good then that's good for me, regardless of trends. I do think however that the gaming industry caters too much to certain areas where others gets ignored for the most part.

    I suppose I can't blame them though

Recently popped in LEGO Avengers for another go 'round. It's gotten better IMO. The game shipped buggy and unfinished, and it appears to have been patched, fixing many/most of the issues, such as the game freezing, characters walking on air, etc. It shouldn't have been released in the state it was, but at least it was rectified. That helps.

I bought the season pass DLC for $10 and kind of forgot about it. It's actually pretty substantial, featuring a bunch of new minifigs and some neat (if short) level packs. Wakanda, Dr. Strange, Agents of SHIELD are all there, along with some non-affiliated content. It really helped overall to raise my opinion of the game. Various Spider-Man figures were also added as a free download.

If you can get it very cheap, this might be worth another look, even if you have played LEGO Marvel to death as I have.

    RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!

Anyway, Recently replayed through Super Paper Mario and all of it's side-quests. I honestly think it's gotten better with age. Sure, the gameplay got switched up from 64/TTYD, but it still has a phenomenal story and some pretty memorable characters and moments.

Then along came Paper Mario Sticker Star...

Replayed a bunch of Wii games recently. Deadly Creatures holds up really well. Very cool game all around. The motion controls generally work well. NBA Jam: good fun, but use the classic controller. The computer AI is wonky as hell. If you score, they are almost guaranteed to score immediately after.

Madworld. Still awesome, but the cutscenes and tutorial are a chore to get through. This is a classic SEGA/Platinum game.
