I did a second Earthbound playthrough not too long ago (this time without bothering with the 1/128 items), very fun and classic rpg. A little farther back I played through Pokemon FireRed again, honestly not my favorite Pokemon game but it's a remake of the one that started it all.

As a kid I liked Pokemon because well, who didn't? Now as a young adult, I like playing Pokemon for the metagame. I absolutely love the metagame. It's like playing chess if chess had 800 different pieces and only 6 to choose from. And then you get into what moves to choose for your movesets, why x move is better than y move, etc. I think of it like a strategy game, and I love strategy games.

I've been replaying the original Oddworld games (Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus). Really really fun puzzle games but really really frustrating at times. I think I've been traumatized by Fleeches. ugh

Wow. I was wondering why he hadn't been on here in a while. I think he just couldn't let the Highlander Mario thing go, and my bet is that things probably got out of hand. Hopefully he comes back and behaves. I like the guy and don't want him to get banned.

I played Wii Sports recently with a bunch of friends late all night on very little sleep. Pretty sure if someone brought alcohol we couldn't have been more loopy. It was a gas.

Shantae Half Genie Hero. A good budget title that I sort of forgot about. The DLC for Risky Boots came out and I popped it back in. Very cool game. Beating it unlocks a third character. I think the Switch got a port.

In the spirit of this thread, I’ve been looking at the Wiiu eshop and quite a few games look pretty decent. I had no idea Armikrog finally came out. I bought Axiom Verge, which is a decent Metroid clone with too much dialogue.

I’m taking another crack at Sonic Lost World. It’s really quite good, but the controls seem a bit more complicated than they need to be. Still, very underrated IMO.

Graphically its Super Mario Sonic 3D World. Which isn't a bad thing! The controls did me in though. I got tired of fighting them and haven't gone back yet...

I keep confusing the buttons. As in the DC thread, the WiiU has a different button layout. I really don’t think Sonic needs so many kinds of jumps. Also I forgot you can climb walls and the wisps using the gamepad still suck. Decent game though.

I kept clinging to walls in the 2D sections.
That's why I never finished Sonic Lost World. It was somewhere at World 5 that kept screwing me over.

Threw Mighty No 9 back in. While it’s obviously flawed, I think it actually compares pretty favorably to many of the MMX games, which is what it set out to do. It has many, many flaws, like boring enemy design aside from the robot masters, long loading times, an odd glitch or two, but for $20 I think it’s decent. Hell, it’s probably way cheaper now. Worth a look if you like Mega Man games. Azure Striker might be a better way to go however.

Also went back to LEGO Jurassic World or whatever it’s called. It still chugs, but the pop in is much less obvious. I think it was patched. So I completed the first movie and it’s ok. TT is trying out new stuff with the LEGO games and they don’t always work. I got to control the t-Rex Fighting the raptor at the end of the movie, at the multi-step QTE is pretty demanding and annoying overall. The humor is really good though. I do like that, even if I skip most of the talking. This game feels like LEGO Marvel a bit where you need to unlock characters and vehicles and whatever and then replay the game to really experience it. That’s fine for an open game, but the JP movies happen sequentially. So I shouldn’t be able to jump to the third movie without completing the second.

That’s a minor issue, but it’s weird to hear story elements that from my experience haven’t happened yet. It’s pretty good, but it’s a LEGO game. We all know the drill.

The reason for that is people like to jump on the one detail you didn’t mention. Covering all possible bases eliminates future questions and conversations.

It’s called front loading, and actually saves time.

    You are welcome.

    That makes no sense.

    And here we are.

Also, some games don’t let you skip. But we were talking posts, not game stories. And I have clearly taken the brevity issue to heart, if you look at my posts over the past few months.

I’m honestly not sure you can offend me. It’s not even thick skin or whatever. If a criticism has merit, I’ll concede a bit and then take my turn. No harm no foul in my book.

If you live in Branson you have enough problems already with the opossums in your outhouse or whatever you barbarians use. How do you wipe your butt in winter when there are no more leaves? Or is that why the Opossum is there? Probably best not to ask.

Anyways, back on topic, Wii Sports and Resort hold up as babysitting tools. An eight year old might clock you in the noggin, but it’s a good time nonetheless.

Aside from that, NHL Slapshot on Wii is really good. I used to play hockey and it just feels right. It rarely feels cheap, and the motion controls feel legit. There is a cool career mode and you can progress or try out several modes. It came with a stupid ass plastic hockey stick shell, but that’s garbage and long gone. I think EA published this game, and it’s quality stuff overall. The 2K game, NHL 2k11 is also really solid, but it’s a bit more arcadey for lack of a better term.

You can’t go wrong either way, but you can probably get both for $10 or so these days. Worth a look.

I’m playing Banjo-Kazooie again for just the 3rd time. It’s fun to see my save file that I started on Christmas Day in 1998, which has about 60 hours. Then the save file from Fall 2007, in which I completed the game 100% in about 16 hours (wasn’t going for a speed run or anything, just enjoying my time finding everything) and now 10 years later I’m playing through again while my 4 year old watches and helps me find stuff. It’s a really great game imo.

What are your thoughts on DK 64? I heard it’s just a huge collect o thon which actually sounds pretty boring. But I like DK, just not the Rare ‘90’s hip version who is totally tubular dude!

Plus all the extended Kong family are idiotic.

Which DK games do you like if you don’t like the Rare ones? I’m a huge fan of Tropical Freeze.

I did play DK 64 but not all the way through. It was a huge game mainly due to having to collect a ton of things with all 5 characters. But I kind of enjoy that form of torture.

It’s by far the worst DK game that I’ve played. You’re an old bag of potatoes if you have that opinion. Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Eh, I used to like playing that as an arcade cabinet when my dad and I would go get pizza from a pizza joint that used to be a garage. It was right next door to a bar that had the front glass broken out so often they just gave up and put up particle board to keep out the weather. Anyways, I had the 2600 version at home and didn’t think much of DK. It was sort of like Joust or Defender, just a throwaway.

Years later watching the King of Kong I learned the game is actually pretty complex. Trying it out again and using a different approach I got a lot more out of it. I’m actually pretty damn good at it now. It’s all about the mindset. Seeing Steve Wiebe draw out the patterns and all that... I never thought of the game in those terms. Pac Man is the same way. It wasn’t until a few years back I heard the ghosts had different behavior patterns. That changed everything. Castlevania falls under that too. The holy water and stopwatch are the best weapons, if you know how to use them.

That’s why you are great. ...ish.

Contra Hard Corps is where it’s at though. You can play as a werewolf with a machine gun arm wearing sunglasses. That’s like 5th level cool.

    You are about level 2.
