Shovel Knight releasing physically according to Best Buy

If some product listings on Best Buy's website are to be believed, it looks like Yacht Club's Shovel Knight is paving its way to retail in September. Listings have been found for , and ; there's currently no listings for Wii U, PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita.

It's unknown whether or not these will be actual physical releases (with discs or carts) or download codes in a box, but they're scheduled to release on September 15, 2015 in North America for US$29.99. It's also currently unknown whether or not it'll also release at retail in Europe.

EDIT: According to , these Best Buy listings are mistakes... .

    --

If this is correct, it looks like I'll finally be picking up Shovel Knight in September. I'll likely opt for the 3DS version if there's no physical PlayStation Vita or Wii U versions, though I'd prefer one of those two versions. I'm also curious as to whether or not it'll include the free DLC on disc/cart, as I've been hoping that Yacht Club would release a physical version only after it'd finished releasing add-on content for the game (and thus the physical version would include all content).

I guess we'll see as more information is revealed.

They discussed a physical version a while back, didn't they? Or am I thinking of something else?

$30 is a bit steep, no? I was waiting for it to be on sale for like $10 or less.

I'd buy a retail copy, but what I'm really holding out on is a Trine release along the lines of Bayo 1 & 2.

I do agree that US$30 (AU$40) is a little steep, especially when the downloadable version is only US$15 (AU$20). I'd have preferred US$25 (AU$33) as the highest price with some retailers choosing to sell for US$20 (AU$26), but I'll likely pay the US$30 for a physical copy if that's the best deal I'm able to find.

Then again, I did recently pay AU$46 for a physical copy of Retro City Rampage DX on PlayStation Vita and I'll likely end up paying the same for a physical copy of Teslagrad on Wii U later this month.

It is interesting to see the varied pricing of smaller-scale titles though, with some titles like Pure Chess and Stick it to the Man (both published by Play It (System 3)) being available physically for just AU$25 whereas titles published by Soedesco (Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, Teslagrad, etc.) are routinely around AU$40-46. And then you have 'AAA' expandalones like Infamous: First Light and Wolfenstein: the Old Blood being available for around AU$20-30 each. It's all over the place.

The only benefits of buying physical is (1) I won't have to delete software to make room on my Wii U, and (2) I can sell the game for like $1.25 to Gamestop after I beat it. Not worth to warrant the 100% mark-up. If the rumor is true, and Shovel Knight releases physically for $30, I'd bet that it'll include DLC, an artbook, and/or a collectible.

Seems odd to pay double for the physical release of a year old game, but I bet it at least includes the DLC.

Well that sucks. I'd love to buy a physical version with all DLC included for $~20-30. ($30 if they include the soundtrack or something else cool)

I'd prefer a Wii U physical, but I'll get a PS4 physical if that's all that's available. I find it a bit lame if no Wii U hardcopy is available; considering they were inspired by Nintendo.

According to various tweets from Yacht Club, neither platforms nor pricing has been confirmed because Yacht Club is still looking into the production of physical copies. Some of those replies were in response to people asking about a Wii U version, so take from that what you will.

As for sales on the Wii U being poor, that . I'm unaware of whether or not Yacht Club has released more recent sales figures, but for the first month Shovel Knight sold 48,600 copies on Wii U, 59,400 copies on 3DS and 72,000 on PC (66,600 on Steam, 3,600 on GOG and 1,800 on Humble Store); Yacht Club stated that those first month sales had exceeded expectations. Lastly, it's also worth keeping in mind that those Wii U and 3DS figures are only from North America whereas the PC sales include Europe and Oceania.

    That sounded really expensive.
    Should have been 10-15 dollars.

Tingle could possibly be DLC exclusive content for Shovel Knight on Nintendo’s systems.

At least a physical copy tends to go down in price over time, unlike digital. Unless it's one of those really sketchy one-time prints like with Cave Story 3D. There are like 20 copies of that in the world.
