Gee that Nintendo Gamepad Gimmick is sure not going to be a hit

Unless you count the companies that are trying to copy it and bring similar functions to the other consoles and even PCs

That design is ugly as hell. Also, did you notice the NES D-Pad and that the Analog sticks look to be from a PS3 controller? Plus, the speakers will be right under your hand if you hold it. Even though this may be a concept design or prototype, it definitely is unattractive and does not look very comfortable to hold or practical.

Not only is it ugly, it looks bulky and uncomfortable...

They also unabashedly mention emulators on their Kickstarter page. Though I'm not a betting man, I have to ask. Any bets on who aims to Cease & Desist this KS first or sue them into oblivion?

Nintendo or Sony for emulation, or Nintendo for obvious design infringements.

I'm sure it's going to get shot down in a day or two by Nintendo's lawyers.

I am sure that is just a slapped together prototype which is why it is ugly and sloppy looking but there is no doubt that this is just another thing copied.....er "inspired" from one of Nintendo's innovations in the gaming world.

Yeah, I was going to mention it might being a prototype, but the 5 minute editing time limit expired on me after I edited my post to include it :/

I don't know about you but I wouldn't give money to a kickstarter if the prototype looked awful. People believe that what they see is what they get and I don't like what I'm seeing.

I wasn't going to give them money anyway Something like this really needs to be fully integrated. Nintendo went the right way. Sony, Microsoft, and nVidia went the wrong way.

the gamepad is wack....i'd rather have more horsepower in the Wii U...having to take your eyes off of a game isnt really practical...that being said...i cant wait to see what they do with Metroid and the next REAL Zelda

I came here to see if someone started a thread about this yet. I strongly dislike people who are completely unoriginal, yet claiming to be so. (i.e. hypocrites) The Cross Plane is the result of people who fall directly into this category. The fact they never mentioned "Nintendo" throughout tells me they don't want their backers to think it a rip-off. I really cant stand when people talk about "next gen" gaming, or gaming in general, and completely forget to mention Nintendo.... A-holes. I know Nintendo does their own thing and doesn't like to "compete" with... ummm.... their competitors, but oh well. I hope this doesn't get funded. I would say there is no way considering the blatant rip-off it is of the GamePad... but then the PS Move saw the light of day.

They did say something to the effect of "it offers an experience like no other (except Wii U)". Of course, I paraphrase.

You're right. They did mention Wii U... once... which you have to scroll through their unbearably long description to find. I would say, "I give them props for that" but I don't want to. They never mentioned Nintendo in the video (which most backers will only watch) and they never mentioned the WiiU or Nintendo after the "except the WiiU" comment.

Wow another company copying Nintendo? Shocking. Lol, it amazes me that they didn't even change the button placement. The Wii U controllers are the only ones with the sticks on that higher level, yet they couldn't even stagger the sticks to make it look like a 360 controller or lower them to look like a PS controller.

That fake GamePad can not reproduce the same functions of the Wii U GamePad. Games on the other consoles would need to be designed for that device. The only thing that fake GamePad would be able to do, is possibly remote play.

And companies get copied all the time. We would not have all these varieties of different tablets, phones, cars, clothes, etc. If companies did not copy.

It's only considered a gimmick when Nintendo does it. It's cool for anyone else.

I would imagine Nintendo have patents surrounding this sort of thing, yet, the fact that Sony are able to have a pseudo-Wii U setup leaves me in doubt as to whether or not there is anything that Nintendo can do legally to stop it.

Obviously, any combination of next-gen consoles (including high end gaming PCs) plus this Cross Plane controller will be massively more expensive than the Wii U itself. As it stands the Cross Plane is being 'sold' from the kick starter page at $349.

This brings me onto the value of such a device in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, the off TV play feature of the Wii U game pad is its least redeeming feature in terms of the potential of the controller. Wonderful 101's draw mechanics, the possibility of asymmetrical play, the gyroscope features as briefly touched upon in Nintendoland, off screen inventory and Pikmin 3's map system, among other things, are all things this Crossplane cannot do. It will never be able to do them.

So, this is a $349 controller that will allow for a person to sit in the same room as their console (because let's be honest, this thing will likely lose connection the moment you're on the other side of a wall) and play said console on a smaller screen with none of the added features of Nintendo's gamepad. What's the point of this device? I don't see an obvious one.

I love the idea of capitalism's ability to inject chaos into a given established system, but this is just badly thought through, expensive and agonisingly unoriginal.

It shouldn't, anyone wanting to come up with a modern controller/display in one, even if you had never seen a wii-u would look like this, this shape has been evolving for the last 30 years, just like phones have all slowly evolved into rectangles with very few physical buttons.

Based on that Logic then Apple would have never won their lawsuit against Samsung for the Samsung Tablet looking too much like an iPad. Based on the concept there is room for Nintendo to have an issue with this device but I guess it all depends on how the device works what functions it has and not so much on what it looks like.

Well, at least I'm pretty sure we all agree it's a piece of garbage

Regardless, my point of legality isn't that it's a simple copy. It is a near perfect carbon copy. The design and layout are identical.

True, I can point at things - even just among the video game industry - that are copies, but they aren't as identical as this. They avoid patent infringement because they aren't unlicensed carbon copies. I don't include licensed third-party controllers as copies

If you look at Xbox SmartGlass, Vita Crossplay, and the nVidia Shield, they are indeed similar in approach, but they vary vastly in design. Even Nintendo's proposed Wii to DS (or 3DS?) crossplay, but same company so no foul possible. Regardless, there is a visible difference. I'm also sure Nintendo is or has looked at them for patent infringements - as all companies do.

Irrespective, Nintendo always seems to be the company to either come up with new ideas or make them market viable.

Such as the d-pad, the analog stick, modern button layout, shoulder buttons, rumble, gyroscope, VR, off-screen, and so on and so on, et cetera.

Also, phones are a poor example You see lawsuits in that arena all the time from software to design infringements. Sadly, you have companies with large patent warehouses to try to shield themselves from lawsuits. Google bought Motorola primarily for their patent warehouse as leverage against Apple, not to give Motorola customers better support.

    1. The only Wii U feature it would support is off screen play. That's not the only advantage of the GamePad, by far.
    2. Game devs aren't going to just automatically start supporting a drastically different control method from some no name kickstarter.
    3. It will get shut down, just like the Metroid movie kickstarter.

Can you imagine what the reaction from xbox/ps3 fanboys would be if the PS4 used a gamepad and Nintendo didn't? all the 3rd parties would be constantly singing its praised and Hideo Kojima would immediately say how brilliantly it would fit the MGS franchise etc.

Is there a way to defund something?

But really, if people want a gamepad, buy a Wii U.... Even if it is funded Nintendo would shoot it down pretty quick.

Nah.. If Nintendo is going to act on this they should let it be made and see if it is even mildly successful and when they make some money off of it then check over and see if it infringes on any patents or design and then sue. After all that is what these companies and people do to Nintendo. Wait until a bunch of money is made off the idea and then sue. You know like the lady that claims she invented the exercise moves used in Wii Fit.
I brought the Awesome. What did you bring?

I already know it won't be that big of a success, the so callled "hardcore" gamers that play on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC already don't like the GamePad so why would they buy this? Only reason I could think of them buying it is cause they wouldn't buy the Wii U for the GamePad cause it's Nintendo and many of them are haters of Ninty.
