    Another Controller Paradigm: Jointed Controllers

We've discussed dual wands, gloves, touch screens, and traditional pads on the WiiU forums; but we havn't looked at one paradigm that permits the passivity of sitting on the couch with the involvement of hand movement-- jointed gamepads. A gamepad with dual analog control and an analog joint could present a real (tactile) advantage for Nintendo's next controller. A large analog bulb joint would give players more range of movement and accuracy without requiring the player to get up off the couch.

Essentially, you would get flight stick controls, allowing the player 3-axis control as opposed to 2-axis control with the analog stick. You could turn left/right, look up/down, and lean around corners.

I don't know. Hard to say from the pictures just how it functions--or, just how well it functions. Would be weird to have their basic controller be FPS-centric, though. Maybe it would be cool?

    Pro controller.

Plus Wii u has plenty of options for using multiple styles of controllers...but I understand.

The Microsoft Sidewinder Dual Strike (it needed a longer name) was said to be really comfortable but the controls in the software that came with it were for specific franchises (Doom, Quake, and Half Life) that were out at the time on PC and because it was for the PC the left stick appears to actually be a 4-way pad or slider that was intended to work in place of the keyboard keys. The age of the device aside, if you were to apply the concept to a modern controller with analog triggers, analog sticks, and an analog joint; I think it could serve to deliver low-cost innovation while being the most friendly design/concept for traditional dual analog titles.

It was Miyamoto's recent comments on F-zero that drew me back to this concept.

Maybe those controllers are awesome, but they look like ass. And I consider myself fairly open to new control schemes.

But the Wii U is made for the GamePad. I have a Pro Controller, but it gets relegated to 2nd players because so many games require the GP for the full experience. I wouldn't mind next gen to just be made for a normal controller, and focus on innovating in other ways.

I'd prefer Nintendo just evolve the Pro Controller as the main controller next gen. This has worked well for Sony for four generations now and Microsoft for three. We can keep costs down and avoid the "gimmicky" label.

Deep down I know this won't happen. Big N is gonna dive head first into something like this joint controller, or something else "creative" next gen.

But the next one won't have a controller, it will be plugged straight into the socket on the base of your skull put their by an advance raise of human controlling robots who can somehow fly without wings. Oh wait iv went all matrix again

I am of the opinion that the next controller should be similar to the Pro Controller yet feature a smaller, high-resolution screen that is slightly larger than the Dreamcast VMU but smaller than the GamePad. Then again, if they aren't going to do anything with it then they might as well abandon the second screen idea altogether.

I hope the GP is compatible with the next Nintendo console. I think it's a fantastic device. Unfortunately, people were quick to judge it as a gimmick or an add on.

Truly, with the GP, you really have to experience it yourself.

I love the concept of the GamePad. But when 3rd parties started using it as an excuse to not port their games, my love started wearing off.

Honestly, they've been touting the old gamecube controller lately, and it's considered by many to be the best gaming controller ever made (fair warning: I'm in this camp).

I suspect the next Nintendo console will have some updated iteration of the GCN controller.

@Woody, you suck because you are correct.

It's maddening to me how people simply refuse to learn anything new.

I was talking to a co-worker today, a WIIU owner and huge MK8 fan. Seriously, all he has played since buying his WIIU is MK8. A few weeks ago I said he should branch out since he was getting frustrated at MK8. So as it turns out he had Nintendoland still wrapped up, but hadn't bothered to try it out. Well, he did try it out (I recommended it) and he loves it. His whole family loves it.

And it's been sitting there, unplayed, since last year.

I guess you can lead a horse to water...

I will say that IMO this "era" (for lack of a better term) of gaming lacks creativity and risk we used to see.

Worse yet, gamers are afraid to try new stuff.

Idiocracy and Wall-E are too accurate, IMO.

    1st world problems man hahahaha

I find it amazing that we'll prefer "not getting up off the couch". The laziness is real. I'm pretty sure Nintendo made the Wii so people would get off the couch and give video games in general a better name.

Not that I love games that force me off the couch, I just think this statement is kind of hilarious.

Actually Dustin I pretty much agree with your entire post lol. Since it seems to be impossible for Nintendo to make a standard controller, this would be a good way for them to "innovate" since they always feel the need to do that, while still giving a standard controller to lazy third party developers who don't want to deal with touch screens or motion controls. The only thing I'd add to it would be a way to lock the pivot in place, for the inevitable games that would never use it.

And to those who say it would be uncomfortable, isn't that way most people say about the gamepad? That it's uncomfortable? Yet, what to most people who have actually tried it say?

Nothing in particular, Kahhhyle, but I'm tired of the POV that that is the optimal game schematic.

Hell, the GP basically is a dualshock, but it gets downplayed because it's slightly different.

You raise a fair point but you can't argue to dual analog gamers that they are wrong about what they want-- it's what they want. What Nintendo could do with a jointed controller pad is create a console and controller that are for the hardcore consumer that just doesn't want motion control (though it would likely still have a gyroscope inside).

I'm beginning to think that their QOL hardware is going to boil down to Wii Fit the Console (hopefully with the vitality sensor for the sake of the penis jokes) and that will service the motion gaming consumer.

I think the QOL thing will be entirely separate from their console division. Nintendo can do more than one thing at a time, you know. It's not necessarily an either/or proposition.

Will it stretch their resources a bit thin? Perhaps. But Nintendo seems to have all the tech the might need worked out. Hell, the QOL might even be Japan only.

If something works very well, you don't throw it out the window and completely change it; you build upon it. Here lately, it seems like Nintendo likes to completely change everything up every generation just for the sake of innovation.

That would be fine if we were back in the early days of gaming when every game was a console exclusive, and multiplats barely even existed. But we don't live in those days anymore. We live in days when multiplats matter a great deal. And because of that, you just can't be drastically different than the competition without suffering repercussions.

I'm not saying innovation in controllers is bad. I'm just saying that in this day and age, you have to go about it in small enough increments that it won't be a huge learning curve for developers and put them off, and that the other console makers can acclimate to it. Either that, or just don't give a flip at all about 3rd parties and sell like the Wii U is selling.

I wouldn't even have a problem with them innovating, but when they just make the controller with seemingly no intent and no ideas to use other then the early launch games it's like why bother?

The GamePad was what sold me on the Wii U when they first unveiled it. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to its potential, and it was a thorn in the flesh as far as 3rds go. Like I was saying, I think they just take too big of leaps when they should try harder to acclimate people. It's a hindrance to innovation, but it's better than scaring people off.
