I've played it, though I haven't got that far. Honestly, it's not THAT bad. It's mostly hated for being a huge departure from the old games. It has solid gameplay, interesting puzzles, a deep and dark plotline, and good characters. The only main problem I had with the game is it's very open world and can get boring trying to explore the huge town, and the main smaller monsters were incredibly boring. The two most common enemies are pretty much just zombies. Nothing unique or creative about them. Other than that, it's a really good horror game. Just a mediocre Silent Hill game. I regret paying full price for it, but it's definitely worth a shot.

Thanks for the info, in what ways does it fail in a silent hill game specifically?

Disappeared, sorry. Anyway... Like I said, the two most common monsters are pathetically bland and not even slightly scary. It has the weapon breaking mechanic from Origins, except in this game you keep NONE of your weapons. You have single use melee weapons and you can even lose your guns and ammo. It definitely makes it more tense, but can get very annoying. The town isn't as foggy or disturbing, just kind of dead. There isn't a set order of events or even a real goal. You just kinda run around and can explore the buildings in any order. (I spent an entire hour in the movie theater before I found out I couldn't go any farther in it) It just kinda feels like you're not getting anything done for the most part. But there are still some scary segments and the story is interesting. So honestly, you're just going to have to go into it with an open mind and decide for yourself.

I had a horrid time trying to break locks in this game. I just could not hit it with the rock to save my life.
