Could Sony make a PS4 Switch competitor? Digital Foundry examines.

The tech wizards over at Digital Foundry, famous for their technical analysis of video games and hardware, such as Switch games, recently did a “what if?” video on whether Sony could make a handheld PS4 console to compete with the Switch?

Obviously, the technical challenges would be great, but it’s an interesting thought experiment. Digital Foundry examines the possibilities of Sony making a PS4 Switch console to compete with Nintendo.

Totally on board with idea of a dock with more RAM, etc. to make the Switch a home console too!

There's not really a huge issue if the Switch isn't powerful.
Nintendo games look pretty good even with limited power.

When Zelda, Mario, and the rest of Nintendo's IP become 3rd party games, then that will be a valid argument in this case.

If you only want Nintendo IP, I don't understand why the fuss about Switch being underpowered. It runs Nintendo games completely fine, and they look great.

If they looked and ran even better, I doubt if you would complain about it.

I wouldn't complain if it looked better, but they look good enough.
A great upgrade over the Wii and 3DS.

There was a time when I thought 256 simultaneous colors with SVGA graphics was good enough, too, because I played games back when the C64 could only do 16 colors, and earlier, when they could only do like 4. Plus, I remember when the 3DS came out, I was impressed that it could pull off near-Wii graphics on a handheld. But now it's not good enough because the rest of the world has advanced way beyond that. I always had the creative imagination to know that even though I'm happy with where things are right now, things can always get better, and that's a good thing.

If not, then why did people make such a big deal over whether or not Breath of the Wild looked better on the Switch than the Wii U? If there is never any desire to advance, then we might as well just stick with the Switch from now on. Nintendo games looking and running better would be a great thing, in my opinion. I'm not talking about conforming to the rest of the industry, or that they have to change toward realism, or anything. I'm just talking about having the ability to take what they're good at to the next level. Mario Odyssey is a good example of that. If it weren't limited by the Switch's hardware, I can just imagine how far they could have taken the visuals.

In my opinion, until we have Holodecks, things will never be "good enough."

I would like to see it, because the Switch opened my world to something I didn't even realize I needed or wanted. I have my doubts that people would buy it, though. Nintendo games just seem to work in portable, and Sony doesn't have a very good track record when dipping into the portable market. Plus, Nintendo is already getting sued due to patents. I don't think Sony wants to, in turn, be sued by anintendo for the same reason.

I would buy it, but I would want them to only improve on the idea of Switch. I couldn’t go back to a tiny screen with buttons being absent like the Vita. The Switch has spoiled me, it is literally the perfect handheld. Better than any handheld device I’ve ever used.

Random fact of the day: Woody doesn’t like to hold hands.

given the vita is kinda half way between a switch and a PS3 I actually do not expect sony to reneter the portable gaming space

I'd rather they do a PS1 Classic. Although I'd prefer a Saturn Classic.

Almost zero point in that though. Two of the Playstations best franchises have gotten remasters on all platforms recently, and there are other PS1 games that have gotten a similar treatment (PaRappa, Metal Gear Solid...)

How expensive would a mobile PS4 cost?

    That was a rhetorical question.

I'm not totally sure if it could be done with today's mobile hardware. I don't keep up on the latest mobile tech, though, so I could be wrong.

I reckon they could come close, tech-wise, but you'd have to carry around a hundred kilo battery!

They do have a very strong history of taking every idea Nintendo come up with and trying to copy it. There is merit for it and im sure Sony have considered it. After seeing how well the Switch has worked, im sure pretty much every hardware manufacturer is looking at it for ideas. This article hits a lot of points on sony copying the Nintendo switch. I dunno if its a bad idea though. The Vita was pretty good, i still use mine. The perks of the Vita/PS4 combo are a lot of the perks the switch has. All of the flaws that the vita/ps4 combo had are things that the switch fixed.

Yes since the vita came out first and it could be played on the go and also on the T.V i would say Nintendo copied them, or at least improved upon the idea.

Well you couldn't play the Vita on your TV, not without a Vita TV which was just a little box that let you play select Vita games. And that didn't even actually connect to your Vita or anything and was completely separate. You didn't even have to own a Vita to use it.

That being said, I don't think it is wrong to say that Nintendo did base the Switch at least somewhat on Vita influences and perfected it. They also perfected what the Wii U originally was with the Switch. I loved the Vita, but I do think the Switch is better in almost every possible way.

I agree the switch is 100% better. but remember you can get the vita to the tv via the PS4. still alot fo hardware, that nintendo removed. its like they took the idea of what the vita was able to do, and also what the wii u was doing and merged them. standaone system played anywhere.
