Nintendo: Switch Online is the successor to Virtual Console

Last month Nintendo confirmed that Virtual Console will not be coming to the Switch. At E3 we were hoping that Nintendo would announce its successor, but it seems that they already have: according to Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo Switch Online is the successor to the Virtual Console.

    Fils-Aime told IGN:

“The Virtual Console successor is Nintendo Switch Online, right? With the mentality that says we’re going to be offering a slate of games, and it’s a slate that’s going to increase over time. For many of these games, there’s going to be additional online capability provided in those games. That’s the vision we have for how to best bring our legacy content to Nintendo Switch.”

He added that he believes Switch Online will eventually be better than Virtual Console, with the possibility of cloud saves and the addition of more legacy content over time. He said, in his famous marketing speak, that they are “going to enable us to continue offering a varied slate of opportunities from an online experience standpoint”.

    Now, what about GameCube games…

They can still release GameCube games even if virtual console doesn't exist.
It would just be "Super Mario Sunshine" instead of "Virtual Console: Super Mario Sunshine"

I remember when I said it was going to go down like this, and people yelled at me for being negative. If that was talking negatively, then I guess Nintendo is actually acting negatively.

Man, Nintendo really likes me. They mention me all the time.

I want virtual console, but I guess I can’t make a judgement on this new service yet since it isn’t even out. If it includes games all the way through to the Wii era, I will be happy. However, please for the love of FF7, don’t make it a streaming service. That will completely ruin it. If it works like Xbox Game Pass and you can download the games, great. But a PS Now type of service for retro games would really piss me off. We’ll just have to see, but as they say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. I didn’t see anything wrong with virtual console, I loved it. The only thing wrong with it is that you couldn’t keep your games after you bought them, because they wouldn’t transfer to new consoles. We don’t have to worry about that anymore. Some people would also complain about pricing, but that’s an easy fix too. You don’t need a whole new service.

If we're due a Direct early September, worst case is the paid online isn't until end of next month. If they want to hit 20 million surely this will need to be a really aggressive move - not to underestimate Smash and Pokemon, but they do need a little more fuel in the tank to hit their proper stride.

If you can download the games and keep them even if you unsubscribe from the online service, that's OK.

If it's strictly streaming, Nintendo needs to turn off the Stuper.

Especially with the longevity of Nintendo's console specific servers...
