    Laurel or Yanny

Go to this web page and listen to the audio clip there. It's a big internet debate. Do you hear the name Laurel, or Yanny? I clearly hear Laurel, but a lot of people say they hear Yanny, and can't even understand how people hear Laurel.

What? How can you hear Laurel? It's clearly Yanny.
I have my noise cancelling headphones on.

EDIT: I could hear both Laurel and Yanny on that video below it where he changed the bass or whatever.

From what I've heard, the recording actually has both names in it. Laurel is recorded at a low frequency, and Yanny at a high frequency. So it either has to do with the speakers people are listening through, or with their ears. I would say your ears are probably a lot more sensitive to higher frequencies than mine are. I used to work in a loud factory, and I think my hearing is probably dulled in certain ranges.

If I wouldn't have known there were two choices, I would have just assumed it says Laurel, and that it has some residual noise from compression. Knowing that there are two choices, I can barely make out how people would hear Yanny in the background, but Laurel is way more dominant to me.

And I hear if you play it backwards it says "Join the Navy".

My crappy tv speakers say yanny. I'm sure my my home theater speakers would have said both. I miss my surround sound.

If it is actually "Laurel" how could it say "Join the Navy" backwards? There's not "L" or "R" sounds in that phrase at all

This isn't nearly as weird as the dress that's a different color to different people. This one can be explained away with different devices playing different frequencies.

I can only hear Laurel. To me this is weirder than the dress. I could imagine seeing both colors for that but I can't even begin to hear anything close to Yanny.

The dress thing wasn't really weird, either, though. It's explained by some people making adjustments in their brains for shading and lighting, and others just judging it by the actual RGB color values that the picture is displaying on the screen.

Play the sample on different devices. Depending on the frequency of each device, you'll hear one or the other.

But with the dress, 2 people looking at the same picture at the same time can see different things. This thing plays differently depending on the device used.

It's not just the device used. It's also according to different people's ears. Some people are more sensitive to higher frequencies than others. Younger people are especially more sensitive to higher frequencies. Plus like I said earlier, I worked in a loud factory, so some of my hearing range has dulled. I hear Laurel whether I'm listening to it on my tinny laptop speakers or my living room sound system.

When my sons get home, I'll have them listen to it and see what they think. One is 8 and one is 14. Since I'm 45, that's a pretty good age range to try it out on.

My friend tried to listen to the other video there where he changed the bass/frequency so you could hear both, but she only heard laurel. (Her hearing on one of her ears aren't that good)

I don't think I was disagreeing with you.

Anyway, my 14 year old had to stay after school for a band thing, but my 8 year old came home. I set it up with absolutely no bias. I had him sit somewhere where he couldn't see my laptop screen, and all I said to him was, "I'm going to play a guy saying the same word over and over, and I want you to tell me what word he is saying." He had no idea what either choice was, or that there even were two choices. All he knew was a guy was going to say some word.

When I played it, right away, he said "Laurel." So just to be fair, I called him closer, and played it on my phone, which has even tinnier sounding speakers, and he still said Laurel, and asked me why. I told him some people think he's saying "Yanny," and he started laughing hysterically because he couldn't believe anyone would think the guy is saying "Yanny."

Wow. My wife just listened to the same thing, and she hears "Yanny," and she can't understand why the 3 of us hear "Laurel."

You think that's weird? Well I've tried it again and now I'm hearing laurel more pronously over Yanny. I wonder if mental alertness plays a factor in hearing different frequencies? In the morning I clearly heard Yanny and just barely heard Laurel.

It's morning now, and I have a headache, and I'm tired. I tried to listen to it again, and I even tried to zone out. I still heard Laurel. I can hear the residual sound that I know makes people hear Yanny, but I can't hear the word.

But that's all my wife heard, and she couldn't figure out how we heard Laurel. She didn't even know there were two choices. I just played the clip, and she said it sounds like "Yammy." Really weird stuff considering we were all listening through the same device. If it was just me, I'd understand. But all 3 of the guys in my house only heard Laurel, and the one woman only heard Yanny. Makes me wonder what else she hears differently than I do. I know half the time, she thinks I said the opposite of what I really said.

I've heard it a few times, and all I hear is 'Yanny'. Tried to make out Laurel, but I have difficulty doing it. It just sounds like yanny to me no matter how many times I listen to it.

It's weird how that works. To me, Laurel is so dominant, I can't see how anyone would not hear it.

The funniest thing was when I played it for my mother-in-law. I forgot she can't hear well, and when I mentioned that, she said, "I have my hearing aid in." She listened for a while with a strange face, like she couldn't tell what the guy was saying. She said it sounded like "him" or "yam" or something. I told her most people hear Laurel or Yammy, and she said it didn't sound like either one of those.

I hear yammy too. It's strange that people hear different things... I have a mild hearing loss in the middle range, though, probably due to tinnitus so that might explain it in my case

Listened to it again this morning. Clearly heard both with Yanny being more dominant than laurel this time. I wonder if it has some thing to do with the cymbalta I'm on or my brain acts differently when the sun goes down. Meaning I could develop Sun Downers when I'm older.

People whose ears can hear higher frequencies hear 'Yanny' and might also hear 'Laurel', while people whose ears can't pick up higher-frequency sounds will only hear Laurel. So, if you're a part of that 47% who hears 'Yanny' (like myself) then congratulations: You likely have a great sense of hearing.

My wife played it on her phone, and from a distance, I could hear Yanny. But up close, it was still Laurel.

Listened a bunch of times. My girlfriend, sat next to me, only heard Yanny!
