Lightbulb My opinions on the gaming industry

Below are 3 positives and 3 negatives I took from the Industry at large this year:

    Positive News:

Nintendo/Microsoft (somewhat) are back! Yes, it's true. The Switch is a huge hit, so huge in fact, that it can not be denied by even the ravenous fanboys of Sony and Microsoft. Speaking of Microsoft...their 1st party development is still lacking, however, they definitely stepped out on the town with their hardware division. The One X is looking better and better each day. If they can get the games to go with it (or their next system) they will be in business in a big way going forward.

The rise of Japan: This year has seen titles of almost every type come from Japan in all shapes and sizes, genres and gameplay styles. Shockingly, they've all been rather large successes financially...with a few even spawning potential for some great franchises heading into the future. We also had a few series make their long awaited comeback or stick their flags in the ground as solid franchises going forward! Titles like: Resident Evil 7, Nier: Automata, Noih, Persona 5, Yakuza 0/Kawami, Bayonetta 3 announced, Ni No Kuni 2 incoming, etc.)

Digital gaming: While physical sales have been falling for a while, this year took a big turn where physical sales for major titles were nearly half of previous installments while generating just as much (or more) revenue than past launches. Sure, some of this is from the loot box craze but mostly it's due to an increasingly large amount of digital sales. One has to wonder, if this keeps up, will we even see physical releases outside of limited run/special editions when the next-gen of systems hits?

    Negative news:

DLC/Loot box overreach: Clearly, based on recent worldwide conversations and vocal consumer unrest, governments across the world along with publishers/developers are finally acknowledging the broken system that has plagued gaming since the App Store launched nearly a decade ago. The greed and financial overreach of corporations has temporarily shut down their plans (EA), caused developers to speak out against the system (Obsidian) and required others to state their plans going forward. (Rockstar) In a surprising move, Apple has started requiring all Apps to display your odds of getting specific items on their store going forward. It's not the exact transparency most were hoping for but it's a start and, as the owner of the biggest App store on the planet, a powerful statement from one of the World's largest corporations.

Cost/Time of Development: Development of projects takes years to fully realize and, as we've seen, it only takes one 'failure' to put any of the major developers out on the street or at least put them at risk of shutting down. (Whether owned by Sony, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, etc) Also, it's nearly impossible for the independents to compete these days. This has been true for a while but this year we've seen a number of smaller studios shut down or publicly talk about financially struggling. I fear, with rising costs and a cut-throat competitive landscape, this will only increase going forward.

Developer Freedom: Many developers are worked to the bone resulting in terrible work environments while publishers spout hostile attitudes towards consumers who are pushing back more frequently causing bad blood on both sides. Also, developers having their hands tied tighter and tighter by Publishers terrified of having any negative word about developer treatment, loot boxes, DLC, etc hitting the airwaves. It is concerning for an industry that is all about 'choice' and 'open gameplay' but behind closed doors is anything but open or choice for those making the games.

All good points I think. It is odd that now the gaming industry's hopes all ride on Nintendo and indies to come up with innovation/invention in the industry.

Also what are your thoughts on the way VR is going so far?

VR sure didn't take off and become the huge thing that they thought it would. I always figured it would be niche. Honestly, I don't think technology is quite where it needs to be yet. They need to be able to achieve that at much higher resolutions, and with less intrusive gear.

DLC exists because it does cost too much to make a game. The real skimming of cash are app games where it is pay to win, and people actually do.

Big budgets really stifles "blue sky" thinking. It's made the AAA titles become far more generic and much "safer". Only the indies are really coming up with new ideas and taking risks.

Western devs really need to get their budgets under control. If Platinum can keep their lights on then anybody should be able to. Just set a reasonable goal for a game, don't try to break graphical records every single time and give yourself enough time to finish it.

The Gaming Industry needs Gaze Tracking and 1:1 Motion Controls before it can stop being rubbish.

Nintendo made smart moves all around this time by not pursuing VR and hitting a home run with a simple yet genius console in the Switch.

I agree. I don't think VR is going to pay off for Sony.

Yeah I think you’re right. They have advanced the VR technology and have helped pave the way for a more practical and commercially viable use of VR, but I think we’re still 5 - 10 years away from VR becoming something more affordable to the consumer and more functional overall.

I'll let you know in a few days. I just picked up the PS VR unit and will open it from Santa at Christmas!

I tried a demo of PSVR about a year ago at Best Buy and was blown away. I played...I think it was Valkrye, the space game. I'm really excited to try it out and am crossing my fingers that I don't get motion sickness since I really want to enjoy the experience!

    What’s VR?

Oh right, that goofy crap they trot out every so often to milk the gullible.

    “It’s different this time guys!”

No thanks. I’d sooner buy a CDI Mark 2. With Bubsy pre installed.

    Stop it.

Except that Platinum has nearly gone under multiple times in the past few years.
Kamiya said this year that if Nier hadn't gone as well as it had that the studio would have gone into bankrupcy.

I said a while back that the studio was in trouble and stretching itself too thin, with too little commercial success.
They are a great studio but their games don't sell. That's why they've had to rent themselves out to activision and do licensed games.
If Nier hadn't done well the studio would have closed.

They need to figure out the “creative genius” part versus what is going to sell. Personally, I like everything Platinum does.

But if it ain’t working, that needs to be remedied. I’d buy a 2D Bayonetta beat em up game, just saying.
