Lightbulb The Wii U is dead

First off: I'm on the side of Nintendo surviving.

The Wii U is dead at this point and to think otherwise is foolish. We've had every major modern series except Zelda and at this point Nintendo needs to refocus to compete with the PS4/Xbone/PC Gaming crowd because those who purchased a Wii aren't coming back.

Moving forward they should have a strong, solid game-plan of remasters (yes, I said it), 1st party titles, a greatly expanded 2nd party lineup via partnerships/acquisitions and 3rd party titles all lined up and ready to go or at least planned to release for the first full year of the new system. [I know remasters get mocked. However, Nintendo has one of the best backlogs in gaming history and there's no shame in allowing the younger generation to play games they would otherwise ignore with solid graphical upgrades. Most of their AAA Gamecube titles *cough* Twilight Princess *cough* would be fantastic on a new dedicated system and pull in users of all ages and this should be fully taken advantage of as they also develop new titles.

Does that mean pushing current games back? Bringing in outside talent? Actually talking to 3rd party studios and doing whatever it takes to get them ready to port games over even if it means giving away some secret Nintendo sauce?

Abso-****ing-lutely! I want Nintendo to do well and the industry needs Nintendo to be strong. I say again: The Wii U is dead. The fact that it still hasn't received a price cut and you can usually find an Xbox One cheaper than the 3+ year old Wii U says everything Nintendo publicly hasn't. They've given up on it and we should be ready to move on asap.

Although, I would still prefer a 2017 release the way the PS4 continues to move units I don't think Nintendo can financially afford to wait. If everything goes perfectly upon the NX release I could see them surpassing Microsoft to become a solid #2 option for the next few years if not in raw numbers at least in overall support compared to Sony.

And? Lol. I think we all know it's dead at this point, still no need for Nintendo to twist the knife in the side of the people that bought it...

    They probably did.

I agree with the remasters part, surprisingly. I didn't originally, but when you brought up the point that they have one of the biggest and most rich backlogs in gaming history, it makes sense. There really shouldn't be any shame in that. Sounds like a sound business strategy to develop.

But they already kinda do it in some ways, like how they make a new Super Mario Bros with every system.

I read the rant. I just think it's kind of ludicrous to post a thread with that title, as it's painfully obvious that if/when Zelda U comes to the system, the fat lady has sung. But still, you made some good points in your little rant. I gave it a Like.

Even delaying it for the sole purpose of making it an dual release.

If you're waiting on Zelda U for the fat lady to sing then I've got a bridge to Mars to sell you. The Wii U's life was over the moment Nintendo decided to delay Zelda and then ignore it completely at this year's E3. Like it or not the Wii U is dead and pretty much has been all year. I also think we'll see Star Fox coming to the NX when it launches, mainly due to fan criticisms of the graphics and gameplay appearing sub-par.

Why would it make you say that? As a Nintendo fan I say 'good for them' and fully support Nintendo, the company, doing what is in their financial best interests. Does it suck as a fan? Absolutely! But I would rather Nintendo get it right than shove it out the door just to appease my personal desires.

I see. Full Disclosure Here: I'm not as big a Zelda fan as some people, but when I first heard of Zelda U getting delayed, it was punch to the gut. If the sole reason for it's delay is so it's moved over to/a dual Release on the NX, that'd be reopening the wound.

hmm the wiiu doesn't have a metroid game, so Zelda isn't the only major franchise omitted from the wiius game library. the only other console to have this omission was the Nintendo 64.

That would be the final straw, they're getting on my nerves lately. I feel like their recent playbook has been devised by Bobby Kotick or John Riccitiello and a move like that would only solidify that feeling

I've said this before, but if they plan on screwing over Wii U owners like that they better be damn sure NX will take off with the mass market. Because their hardcore fans will not be there to keep them in the black...
I bought the Wii U for 2 games. Smash and Zelda (and later Xenoblade). Everything else was jusy gravey so I didn't complain when there was no third party support, or no Metroid or F-Zero, that the VC sucks, whatever.

But the thing about gravey is, its not great when you don't have anything... Or in this case one thing to put it on.

Yeah, Nintendo is rapidly losing their audience to Sony, Microsoft, and Valve. Hopefully Kimishima will shake things up something fierce.

Yeah, I'm not even going to bother with the NX at launch if they have the same attitude and hubris they've been displaying lately.

    The Wii U is dead

Something I learned with wii u is that i would never buy a console on launch day.
Thats why it took me 2 years to get a ps4, the only way i can get NX on launch day is if they have amazing first/third party games and a Zelda title.
Otherwise ill stick to my ps4.

I mean to be honest, all the consoles are kind of fizzling out. I still go to Nintendo for Nostagia, but really nothing coming out this last year has been the life changing gaming experience. It's all becoming stagnant

Hmm. I saw a YT video yesterday talking about should people buy a WIIU or wait for NX? My take on that is we know virtually nothing about NX. Hope is good, enthusiasm is good, but I don't understand why people are getting so pumped over something that is an unknown commodity. Yep, it might be great, likely it will. But even if I were to buy it at launch (I won't) the launch library will probably be pretty meagre. Meanwhile I got a pretty good WIIU collection going. I'm actually more concerned about when Nintendo shuts off the WIIU online capabilities. That means Splatoon and Mario Maker basically become coasters. So I'm actually in no rush for the NX unless it has some form of WIIU backwards compatibility or support.

And while I respect the OP, it's sort of ridiculous IMO. Consoles don't die, they simply stop being supported. Not quite the same thing. Ray Bradbury passed quite some time ago, but certainly doesn't make his works irrelevant or meaningless. If anything, I appreciate them more now that he isn't writing anymore. Do I wish he was alive and still writing? Sure. But nothing lasts forever, that's why life is precious. I think the WIIU still has some life left in the old gal. Is it on the way out? Sure, indisputably. But I think it's a bit premature to grab the shovels and bibles. If nothing else, it's been an interesting ride.

First off, the Iwata comments were definitely unnecessary. Second, as long as games are coming out and people are playing both those games and previous games on the Wii U, in my opinion it's not completely dead. No, I don't think at this point there will be some game that makes a huge turn around for the Wii U, but as Drew said, the Wii U still has a bit of life left.

Thanks RBS. If I still had my NES, Genesis, 2600, PS1 and Xbox I'd still play them. (okay, not the Xbox!) so in that sense they aren't dead. And they aren't irrelevant either. A good work is sort of timeless, you know? I realize I'm a sentimental old dude at this point, but I've had a lot of good times with the WIIU and IMO it isn't quite done yet simply because a newer model may come out in a year or two. That seems sort of superficial to me.

People like new stuff, I totally get that. I just think it's a little premature to be digging the grave for WIIU, especially since we have pretty much nothing but rumours about NX. And as I said, even when it launches, the line up will probably be pretty skeet, even if Zelda U is ported. 3rd parties will do the bare minimum with old ports, we'll see a couple of sports games and maybe 3 really interesting games. That's how pretty much every launch goes.

I'm all for hope and good expectations. But I'm going to appreciate what I have now instead of chasing what amounts to something as substantial as unicorn farts.

    Click bait title.

Here's my take on it. I am a Wii U owner, not an NX owner. At this point, I'm not even going to be able to buy an NX anywhere near launch because of other responsibilities. So Nintendo doesn't have the right to expect being a Wii U owner to automatically translate to being an NX owner. We'll have to pay yet another $400 or whatever to get that console. So what I'm getting at is that for someone like me, it doesn't matter how amazing of a launch the NX has, because it doesn't change the outlook of the console that I do own. I'm still excited and interested, and hopeful that the NX will succeed, just because I like Nintendo. But it doesn't make things right with me, because I didn't buy an NX; I bought a Wii U.

That being said, I did get my money's worth out of my Wii U, even if things have been disappointing.

I agree with this one. I also have still enough games to look forward to. The wii U isn't dead nor is it unsupported. It is just a shame the games come out so slowly and so few.

Nintendo hasn't had much third party support since the n64. I know younger people have fond memories of the n64 but in reality, it wasn't a success, not in comparison to the nes and snes. Back then Square Enix was the developer to have and they lost them, they lost a lot of devs sticking with cartridge format. Gamecube came along and everyone said what you're saying "they need to get back third party support no matter what", and they never really did. Then Wii came along and they got a fair share of third party support but it was all shovel ware crap to cash in on the hype of the system. Now we're back to where we started, Wii U, no third party support.

To my understanding Nintendo charges more than anyone else to put a game on their system - that loses dev's interest. Also, with the track record they have, they can't afford to be so pompous and expensive. Let devs make games for the same fee's charged on other systems already.

Furthermore, they need to come out swinging and gain back trust lost on (close your eyes and insert system here).

I love Nintendo. I've owned every machine they've put out, even, yes, the virtual boy. I've learned to accept Nintendo as a niche console for their first part titles. I don't expect their hardware to top charts anymore and haven't since the Gamecube (which I waited outside 6 hours for on the day of release back in 2001).

I can't say Wii U is dead. Still a few games coming and...well, look at my sig. I'm not biased. And let me tell you, gaming itself is in a rut. Remakes, HD remasters and sequels. That's about all the gaming industry is right now. New idea's take a lot of time, money, and chance to make back the investment.

I don't think it's fair to just point at Nintendo when the whole industry is stale. Other consoles are selling better, but that sure doesn't mean they are better.

I'd say the WIIU is going to have a cult following in a couple of years once people get tired of playing as a gunsight.

No problem. And I pretty much agree with everything you've said in this thread. I also appreciate the positivity you continue to bring around here. I don't post a lot anymore, but I do still visit and read, and I notice more positive comments from you about most things than almost anyone else on the forum. You may not like Star Wars, but I've got Woody and Rug for that. Anyway, thanks for trying to get people to see the small glimmer of light in times of darkness.

Is this the "Wii was purchased by 10 million Nintendo fans and 90 million grandmothers--who have since moved onto smartphones and tablets" argument? You know, the one Pachter absolutely adores?

Sorry. Not buying that one. It simply isn't true. There is some audience to be reclaimed there. Just not the portion who was only enamored with Wii Sports (and motion controls), as a novelty.

But they do need to try a lot harder to attract the main gaming demographic, as you point out. Having some exclusive games, or maybe just more than a handful of games, that appeal to that group is a must.

Remasters do get mocked. Around here, a few members do it constantly, although usually only about remasters from other publishers. Which is weird. You go to a Sony site, you won't hear a lot of grousing about God of War 3 remastered, or Tomb Raider remastered, or what have you. Anyway, the point is that remasters do sell. And Nintendo would be foolish not to consider that sort of thing. Metroid Prime in 1080/60? I...might have to buy that...

I agree with all the rest of what you have to say there, too. But I'm afraid that the NX will be launching too soon to make any big strides in broadening their 2nd party output. That'll have to be a work in progress, I think. Hopefully they've already done a thing or two we don't know about yet, though.

I'm usually the first to say that their strategy may pay off with all this, especially with the timing--if NX is a pretty big step above the PS4. But that doesn't mean that I don't still feel that their strategy with the Wii U was a mistake. Just read up and down the thread here. How many are squealing with delight at the prospect of buying an NX at launch? Like, nobody, right?

Of course, given the proper console design, and some whiz-bang launch exclusives, that could change. But when Nintendo decided that doing certain things with the Wii U--advertising, regaining third party support, price drop, etc., etc.--was throwing good money after bad...it was a mistake. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind about that. It was a stupid mistake by a conservative, arrogant, short sighted Japanese corporation. It's not something they can't recover from, but they're going to have to pay that money they should have already spent at some point. And it may be with the launch price and the advertising of the NX.

You mean you don't think Unbound Shart was delayed because of all the "new possibilities" they came up with for it?

You might as well say them now, because I can almost guarantee you it's being delayed for a dual release.

Personal desires? Dude...Zelda U was the absolute first game to be announced for the console. A lot of people bought the console in anticipation (at least partly) of it. The game will have been in development for six years by the time it's released. Sorry. I'll have to disagree with you on this. Can't say "good for them" on this one. Especially when what would have truly been in their best financial interests was releasing it last year. Even if that meant delaying A Link Between Worlds.

It's a great system. The thing that sucks is how we've been jerked around, and how Nintendo is handling the end of life for the console. I do still think we'll get a few more noteworthy releases next year, though. But like this year, simply not a reasonable amount.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. They delay all their games so who knows, but the fact that they haven't even confirmed its coming in 2016 is frustrating.
