    Hello Nintendo Community

Hi, I just recently purchased a Wii U for my 10 yr old son for his birthday next month. It is used but appears to be in very good condition. I bought him a 3DS XL 1 1/2 ago and he is a huge pokemon gamer as well as into minecraft and terraria. I am a long time pc gamer but have never bought a console before so this is kind of exciting for me as well. He asked for (and I bought) Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess as his 1st game. Looking forward to participating here in the community as to my experiences and hopefully also be able to contribute when I can.

Welcome, bmurray. It's good having you join us. We're a pretty good group here.

It's kind of funny, though. We went to a lot of trouble to get the powers-that-be to change our forums from Wii U Forums to Nintendo Today forums so that we could attract new Switch users that wouldn't care to join a Wii U forum. It just finally happened a couple of days ago. And now we've attracted a Wii U owner.

    Anyway,

haha, well, not sure what to say to that but life is funny. I have to admit I know next to nothing about the Wii U, or Switch (which my son also asked for). I barely know anything about the 3DS XL. A whole new world for me

Welcome! Your son will love the Wii U and likely really enjoy Twilight Princess. Down the road you should consider Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8. Both games are up to four players so the whole fam can join in and they're a ton of fun.

    Some awesome Wii U games:
, 2D platformer for 1-4 (5 if you count the gamepad thingy) players
    , 3D platformer for 1-4 players
, Party racing game for 1-4 players
, party game for 1-5 players (most fun if you are 3+ people)
    - 2D fighting game with characters from many different franchises for 1-8 players
    , Adventure/action/puzzle game for 1 player
, Open world adventure/action/puzzle game for 1 player
, a puzzle/strategy game (can be a bit difficult) for 1-2 players (different modes)
, a beat em up game that is Zelda themed for 1-2 players
, a really fun and unique 3rd-person shooter game for 1-2 players (the local 2 player kind of sucks, though)

And there's also more cool games out there.

As far as games go, you need Lego City in your life! Darksiders I and II are both sound purchases as well.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. So I've received my Wii U, controllers, etc. and a friend of mine has donated his 32" flat screen (16:9) and old couch (sofa) for the basement which is where I'm setting this up. Just need to track down a tv stand which I've already sourced. I've not yet plugged everything in to make sure it works but plan on doing that this weekend. I looked over all the items and they all look to be damage free (fingers crossed). I likely will have this connected to home network via Ethernet or just do by wifi (not sure yet). Anything I should look for specifically while shaking down system? I've already noticed that the wrist strap was missing so ordered one on ebay for a few bucks.

Nice. You're going to have a lot of fun. Just FYI if you didn't already know, there is no ethernet port on the Wii U. You have to buy a USB ethernet adapter. Or you can just use the built in WiFi if you have good reception in the basement.

Check the gamepad's stylus. If it's broken it probably won't stay in its slot causing you to lose it. Most retailers sell packs of styluses (styli?)

so finally have had a chance to connect the system up and make sure everything works. As I was fumbling through the different system settings I noticed that the previous owner must have not cleared out their account and there was still $4-5 balance. Also, there were other bits of previous user information in there so I performed a delete settings and data to wipe all information off the system and start fresh. I was also astonished when opening up the web browser (before the delete procedure) that there were porn sites suggested (from previous owners history?). Need to make sure none of those artifacts remain before I hand it over to my 10 year old kiddo and his friends. will also set up parental controls to lock out a lot of that stuff anyway. My son has a 3ds xl so I am hoping I can just register his account on to the wii U without any difficulty. That's the plan anyway.

actually, the wiiU uses advanced site suggestions based on where your router has been in the last week. it's quite possible your son might be either into porn or working part-time for a porn site to show you he is a responsible enough to own a nintendo system.

haha, yeah, I thought about that way too long. I was also thinking I would delete games that had already been loaded on the system but apparently they used disks as there were only a few games already on and they may have been trial versions for all I know. The porn would have got me in a world of sh!t with the ex. so now all I have to do is set up his account and also open an eStore account using my info and I should be good to go. Tonight going to test run a game I have the disk for. so far everything seems to be checking out fine.

Don't mind Rob, that's just the forum troublemaker at it's finest.. although he's not really much of a troublemaker to begin with :'p
You might even wanna say he should Switch things up ;D
Didn't know you had a Switch though Rob, I'm probably one of the few around here that doesn't have one
But as someone who's yet to get a switch I'd just suggest waiting until more games starts to roll out

Honestly I've been wondering about the same thing for a loooong time right now.
As for the question at hand, neither do I have the funds to get a Switch at this very moment nor do I have any interest to get one until more games starts rolling out (likely around holiday season).

For now Switch only has Zelda that's really worth buying for. The rest are either just ports of games I already have or games that's not directly worth purchasing a system for
But long Story short yes I do have a PS4 and games on both Steam and Origin.
But to be fair I haven't really been playing much as of late and whenever I actually do I have a backlog of about 50+ titles sitting there waiting for me so

how many games do you need? bomberman, puyo tetris, mario kart and almost arms all have online modes that offer an always new experience. and i sank roughly 250 hours into zelda already. i would honestly rather have more free time than more games at this point.

    No, they don't :/
Not only that but I don't get paid either, feelsbadman

Puyo tetris and Bomberman, Mario port 8 and the likes are hardly games worth buying a new system for. They're definately something I'd probably pick up if I had the system back that's that. And ARMS isn't out yet (although soon).
ARMS is definately in the same category as Zelda though, as is Odyssey Xenoblade 2 etc
IMO It's not worth the investment right now

I've been a pc gamer for many years but my hrs have fallen off to nearly nothing as I just bought a house last Nov and also have a 10 yr old son which gobble up much of my free time. This is my first console |o| (not really mine). My pc is not even game-worthy at this point but it still can play War Thunder which I had gotten a little hooked on a year or so ago. Years ago I was all BF2/3 fanboy My son has plunged me into the world of Nintendo and I am doing my best to learn the ropes so to speak. He is also into Minecraft, Terraria, and of course Pokémon.

Do what I did. Buy a spare replacement touch screen, and a spare replacement wifi module to be able to repair the more difficult stuff. Then, buy a spare unit and keep it sealed up for a worst case scenario. ^_^

i understand your point, but you do realize the online for the switch has a larger active fanbase than the wiiU, and a more level playing field, since they got rid of things like firehopping. so, although it is a port, its a different and better experience.

Of course, that I have no doubts of and I'll definately get MK8D once I do get around to get a Switch. The modest modifactions to the game make it the overall better game.
But as of right now to me it's not something I'll purchase an entirely new system for i.e it's not a system seller.
But I can definately see it being a system seller for anyone who didn't own a Wii U or bought the original MK8
I'm really interested in Fast:RMX though

Anyways I've been liking a lot of the smaller type of games (and games in general I guess) I've seen heading to Switch as of late.
So yeah, I know I'll love the system once i get it. no question about it

Meh if you can't beat them, join em.
    That's what I did.

But don't worry surely I'll come to see the error of my ways at the very last moment like a true here and I will redeem myself by bringing them down them from within, thus restoring the balance to the force.

Or alternatively I could just be Monkeying around

so I ran into a bit of a problem last night. As I mentioned earlier, my son has had a 3ds xl for the past couple years. So when I fired up the wii U it is asking if I want to create a new profile or use an existing one. Well, I suppose I would like to set the wii U up to use my son's existing Nintendo account. But here is where I run into a problem. It is asking me for his Nintendo account ID (I think I have the terminology correct). I look at his 3ds and in settings I see his profile name. Is this the same thing? It's also asking for his Nintendo password, which I thought I wrote down, but when I enter those into the wii U it says that that is not correct. Ugh. Is there a way for me to do this easier? There seems to be some way for the wii u to "discover" the 3ds but not sure how this works. There is a pin for the 3ds that I have for parental controls but that is not the same as his password, correct? Any help would be appreciated.

The Nintendo network ID is something you would have set up on Nintendo's website. It tells you how to recover it if you forgot it here:

Here's info on how to recover a password

It sounds like you never actually set up a NNID from what you're saying, though. I hope that helps

The pin and password are different. The password is linked to his account, that's how he logs in to his Nintendo account. The pin is just for you. I believe his profile name is just his nickname, so unless you made it the same as his ID I believe they should be different. If you know the email associated with the ID you should be able to attain that information pretty easily.
