Sad news out of Japan today, as the Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo’s third president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, has died at the age of 85. Yamauchi died of complications of pneumonia in a hospital in central Japan and funeral services for the former president will be held on Sunday. A spokesperson for Nintendo has stated the company is in mourning over the loss of its former president. Yamauchi presided over Nintendo through the launch of the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, and the Nintendo GameCube before he was succeeded by current president Satoru Iwata. After stepping down in 2005, Yamauchi refused his retirement pension rumored to be worth around $9 to $14 million dollars, claiming that Nintendo could put it to better use inside of the company. We here at Wii U Daily would like to extend our heart-felt thanks to Yamauchi-san for all he did as the president of Nintendo, as he presided over some of the greatest console launches in gaming history. local_offer hiroshi yamauchi Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Legendary Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go The cost of Nintendo consoles in today's dollars Wii U gets firmware update Watch the Smash 4 EVO Finals on Disney XD Take a peek at this week’s Nintendo Dow 9 things you probably didn't know about Super Mario Bros. emmery (omegaX5) May you rest in peace Lord Hiroshi Yamauchi, you will be highly missed, without you many of us here in this comment section and globally around the world may not have become gamers, even if it was the NES,SNES,N64 or gameboy, for me it was the amazing revolutionary gameboy,i hope you rest in peace Hiroshi with all you ancestors and loved ones and friends whom have passed away, all we know is that your in a better place great Nintendo Emperor, without you the video game industry probably wouldn’t exist today, and neither would these rivals exist (Sega,MicroSoft,Sony) So let’s all have a moment of silence and pray for him,and lets leave luck to heaven for the future of Nintendo. Clel No problem, totally understandable. Only pointed it out because it made what you wrote mean something else. Petri Yes, I played too much Duke Nukem 3D back in a day. Absolutely no disrespect meant. Derk Just going to throw in a fact that I saw in the NY times… Most of you probably don’t care… Hiroshi owned the Seattle mariners and is believed to be the only owner of a MLB team to never see his team play in person. Now, the team might pass on to Chris Larson (a former Microsoft executive) who is the team’s largest minority shareholder at 30.6%. Hiroshi was not much interested in baseball; however, one of his few hobbies was the Japanese board game Go, which he played at the master’s level. According to chess master Emanuel Lasker: “The rules of Go are so elegant, organic, and rigorously logical that if intelligent life forms exist elsewhere in the universe, they almost certainly play Go.” Guest WHAT THE HELL?? LOOK what I found on front page Yahoo news: Guest WHAT THE HELL LOOK what I found on front page Yahoo news: Maxwell Baumgarten That is so disrespectful of yahoo to say such things about this great man who was so much more than that. He kinda saved it. Deezy I understood and I agreed on what he meant. Sometimes I just end up speaking out. Archiq09 RIP Ducked Sad to hear, sounds like he lived a good life. Sonic the Hedgehog He did make Nintendo famous as ever. He monopolized the gaming market once, leading to my creation. I owe him everything. So, yeah, he had a great life, which paid off just great. Now I am going to have to miss him forever, anyone else expecting Iwata to have a breakdown during the next Nintendo Direct? Leo Hiroshi Yamauchi will be forever the face of Nintendo. Nintendo is Hiroshi Yamauchi and Hiroshi Yamauchi is Nintendo. This man revolutionized the world we live in. Thanks to his visions and great business sensibility Nintendo is the empire that it is today and will continue to be for centuries to come. There are some people who are very special and Hiroshi Yamauchi was one of them. He was simply the brightest mind of the gaming industry. R.I.P Hiroshi Yamauchi. Thank you for rocking our world!!! Zuxs13 That really sucks, he was one of the biggest reasons Nintendo became the company that it did. cleidsonlourenco There is something beautiful about video games, and making video games. You create characters who literally always have another chance to experience new adventures. Relive eating a green mushroom, or ’cause the launch of a new game, while the human group that creates and allows the existence of this universe ages, deteriorates and eventually dies. If these characters really existed, imagine how sad it would be to watch it all happen. So many powers and still feeling helpless. At this point I think we were closer than ever of these characters. Chris Aita Such an awesome guy who built Nintendo the way it is today. Thanks for everything. Wayne Beck This is a sad day. ='( SleepySkullhead Refused his pension. Wow, he is amazing. Plus, he released 2 of my favorite consoles ever! FutureFox He is a real CEO. Played life without cheat codes. Magnus Eriksson Vila i fred! Du betydde väldigt mycket för min och andras barndom. We gamers will always value the effort you paid to those consoles which marked us for life. Sad indeed =( CCM R.I.P Mr. Yamauchi. Your impact on this industry cannot be measured. As a tribute I will play ONLY Pikmin 3 on my Wii U and Animal Crossing New Leaf on my 3DS XL tonight when I get home from work. GTA V on my 360 and NHL ’14 on my PS3 can wait till tomorrow. Guest For you, Hiroshi Yamauchi, Rest in Peace. ZeldaFanzzzz Sad day, He was responsible for the Nintendo we all grew up with. Thank you and rest in peace. Bob Wilkerson Meanwhile at Nintendo Headquarters Bob Wilkerson Who would downvote a flag at half mast in tribute to the passing of a person such as Hiroshi Yamauchi. Must be a troll Deezy gave u a free upvote Bob Wilkerson Thanks.. Not that I am looking for upvotes but I am just shocked that some people are so low that they would go out of their way just to be an ass Deezy I know. It is sad. DarkLegacy I agree, it’s a sad news about him dying from Pneumonia and now he will live forever in Nintendo fans and staffs heart’s. this is tragic news this is and I’m wondering if there will be a president for Nintendo. R.I.P Hiroshi Yamauchi Yoshifan3 sorry, i have some kids over and they were messing with my profile. im so very sorry and meant no disrespect toward the man, the man was a legend. Bob Wilkerson Well accidents happen.. I know we have some trolls that do nothing but downvote everyone and I assumed that was the case here. Yoshifan3 how about a free upvote 🙂 Magnus Eriksson Im actually a bit sad over this. This picture is paying the man respect in a very good way. Thank you Bob. Yoshifan3 hes the reason why nintendo is in the pickle they are now today. yes hes the reason for our childhood, but with the n64 he started to fall. but rip old man. Deezy I don’t know what you mean gaming wise but when it comes to the console its debatable. I know that when it came to consoles Nintendo was eccentric, but these were imaginations that came to reality. Look at the N64, a console that looks like a castle (with cartridge) and a controller that looked like a spaceship. Then, you had a cube for a console. Imagine seeing those in Japan only. Wouldn’t you feel jealous? then there was those nun-chucks, like seriously imaginations that kids would love. and now a tablet that can control your television. It’s the Nintendo way. You can’t get mad at their odd looking consoles if your having lots of fun with them. Yoshifan3 sorry for the post, my 10 year old niece made it, im actually very sad that this man has died, as he was my childhood. C4 During that era everyone made mistakes… lots of manufactors tried to enter console market, Sega started to struggle (at least in the west) badly Nintendo focussed on what they could do best at that time, as you said. While I don’t agree with everything Nintendo did at that time, there wasn’t much they could do against PlayStation, except continuing investing in consoles and portable market, which still is one the strongest points of current Nintendo. The 64DD wasn’t a bad idea on paper for its time IMHO (32MB writable data on each disk!), but it wasn’t a success. If just flash memory where available at that time, development wouldn’t be hindered by a strage device like the 64DD back then. Katz R.I.P Hiroshi. Deep respect for you. Gordon Tillett Rest in peace. A true company man who did great work, you’ll always be remembered and appreciated. CEObrainz He was a great man, proud to have lived whilst he was alive. Petri This glass of whiskey is for you Mr. Yamauchi. Thank you for my childhood. tooby77 Indeed. I raise my vodka/redbull for that. U will now own the heaven with your Nintendo skills. U may rest in peace and tnx for my childhood with nes and so on. Played Nintendo for almost 26y and will do it atleast that many years more. 🙂 david jarman :_( Jon It;’s worse than that, He’s dead Jim. 🙁 Starfoxguy RIP sir. Hiroshi may the hyrulian spirits be with you on your next step into the afterlife. DVE 🙁 RIP thank you for the memories Is_Mort Now we just have to hope the current presidents die. NkoSekirei seriously maybe u should be fed to the lions for that horrible comment Mario How could you say sush a thing! Yoshifan3 because he has no heart. hes as cold blooded as a reptile. anyone who says that kind of stuff should seek medical attention. fast. Mario You’re right. DarkLegacy How could you say that about a legend that has died?! you should be banned from here! Hugh Quinn so many feels:( RIP LEGEND. Mark A great man has died today; today, at least just for today, let’s all forget about our biases and mourn as one big gaming community. If any of you guys feel like crying, go ahead, we’ll understand. Merrfn May he rest in peace. Michael Ocampo I owe this guy a lot because i feel like i would be really different (in a bad way) from how i am now if i didn’t grow up with Nintendo. We also have to remember that he had a life outside of Nintendo… I’m so sorry to his family and friends. May he rest in peace. May his legacy live on. Tim van Broekhoven R.I.P. My friend. You have meant a lot in the gamesindustry. Merrfn A great man has died today. The father of gaming- the founder. He rose the dead corpse of the gaming industry from the grave, the saviour of it all. Us gamers owe him everything, for if we did not gaming would no longer exist. The next generation of children, missing out on the experience- playing angry birds. May he ever forever be renowned for his justices! For saving our joy! So I ask you all, here today-let him rest in peace! that guy R.I.P he is in nintendo heaven now. Merrfn May his legacy live on forever more. CMB Rest in peace man Shota this man is a legend. He made my childhood with snes. Rest In Peace and you’ll never be forgotten.. Squid Rest in peace Hiroshi, you will be missed from gamers all around the world. RIP Yamamuchi, You are gone from this world but not forgotten, and will be remembered for hundreds of years. Mario And beyond… goldmrmber He refused the money the guy was a muli billionare one of the richest in the world a true japan elite He made that much in interest every month TURNED DOWN LOL WHATEVER More like out if respect after he bodged the gamecube release lol discuss R.I.P.Hiroshi Yamauchi and the other 154999 people that died on the same day. Chris Aita In honour of Hiroshi Yamauchi, I am going to state my favourite game from Nintendo in the time he has been apart of the company (1942-2005) That game has to be; The Legend of Zelda: the Wind Waker. Now to be clear I am not saying this because of the new HD Remake, it’s because this game has everything a game needs… Exploration, Adventure, Great Story, Art Style, Characters and Music. The game is huge in scale, even games like Grand Theft Auto feel small in comparison to the Great Sea. It took us on a wild ride with unforgettable characters like Tetra and The King of Red Lions. This game is the representation of what Hiroshi stood for, not the best looking game; but the most unforgettable. It’s theme is engraved into my brain and I think of it almost weekly. It’s my most played Zelda game, it’s so incredible to just look at and most importantly, it’s damn fun. We will never forget the Golden Age of Nintendo when Hiroshi was around. Now I ask anyone who actually read this: What was your favourite Nintendo game from 1983-2005? Speak your mind in honour of this great man. We will never forget you, Hiroshi-san. *salute darkcreap Uf, a lot of them that I loved… Maybe my favourite: Yoshi’s Island. Never seen such a great original platformer. So beautiful, so original, so funny. It had many original unexpected details, like the ski stage and the great balloon level too. I heard it has not been remade due to the SuperFX chip, unfortunately. It is a problem, because although my old Super NES and Yoshi’s Island cartridge work perfectly, my Super NES controllers do not work perfectly: the start and select buttons seem to have stopped working. Too bad 🙁 EDIT: Great!!! I just saw that I can buy a third party controller from Amazon. Cool!!! YogiGRB I have been gaming since 1985 and these are some of my favourite games: Duckhunt, mario3, metroid (all of them) Topgun, mortal combat (1-3), super mario world, Mario 64, Turok (64), mario sunshine, beyond good and evil (gamecube), golden eye (64) just too many to name. Wiiluigi RIP Dave_Val Rest in Peace MR. Yamauchi leo See yah Mr. Yamauchi! Thanks for everything you did. -Legends Never Die 1981Mog . The man that presided over Nintendo’s best years – funny how someone that earned a payout turns it down to benefit the company – a class act. WarioForever He was a good man… 🙁 Elitepwnsface Nintendo would not be without this guy. RIP. Bomberman RIP Yamauchi. Thank you so much for allowing my games to be on your console. I know you probably wont read this, but we Bombermans from Plant Bomber will miss you. *Raises a bomb in salute* Mario We salute you with a BOOM!!
