Oct 31st, 2012

Many Wii U fans were disappointed to hear that first party Nintendo titles such as Pikmin 3 were delayed until March 2013. But Nintendo had a good reason to do so, apparently. Their plan was to launch the Wii U with Pikmin 3, but after third party publishers showed great support for the Wii U at launch and beyond, Nintendo decided to move some of the key first party titles to a later date.

Pikmin3 Wii UThis comes from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who said that “Nintendo tends to release too many titles at the launch of a hardware system”, and because of that, the new console “suffers a drop” in new games after the launch, Iwata told investors.

Nintendo doesn’t want that to happen with the Wii U, and because third party publishers showed support for the Wii U, Nintendo was able to “push back the release of some of the titles that we had originally intended to release as launch titles until next year”, as Iwata puts it.

Some of the first party titles that have been pushed from launch include Pikmin 3, Wii Fit U, Game & Wario, and LEGO City Undercover. The Wii U will still launch with key first party games such as Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros U.

In addition, Nintendo is working on bringing all of their major franchises to the Wii U. They’ve confirmed to be working on a Wii U Zelda game, Super Smash Bros U, and we’ve heard hints of Mario Kart and Metroid as well.

okay, if this is true than where the hell is gta V?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Mac

for one rockstar has said they have no plans on putting gta V on wii u and two, gta V is set to release june or july of next year

      • j

and three you’re an idiot. It’s releasing in the spring numnuts. And if Rockstar, who is one of the most hardcore 3rd party developers out there doesn’t put out games on the system what does that mean? Also, I’m buying a wii u, so I’m not trolling on it. I just want a diversity of games. Finally in reality there’s only two exclusive third party games coming to the wii u. Rayman and Zombiu. Name another one.

        • Nintenlord

By the time the page refresh and my comment is show you will be owned so i will not waste time making a list also tell me what other console will has exclusives this year first party dont count

        • fjveca

          Bayonetta 2

        • MrAllOverIt!!!

I’ll name one. How bout Bayonetta 2?

        • The Plague

Bayonetta 2. There; I named one…. You happy?

        • transaxle

For exclusives, not including Nintendo’s games (NSMBWU, Wii Fit U, Wii U Panorama, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Game & Wario etc) They only have…

          Bayonetta 2
          Dragon Quest X
          ESPN Sports Connection
          Funky Barn
          Game Party Champions
          Jett Tailfin
          Lego City Undercover
          Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
          Rabbids Land
          Scribblenauts Unlimited
          Sing Party
          Tank! Tank! Tank!
          The Wonderful 101
          Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2013

So… yeah. Not one, but only like 13 or 14 that I can think of.

          • THAT GAMING GUY

            u forgot Rayman Legends

        • theBALLANCEDopinion

          Munster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

        • Mac

so im an idiot for pointing out that gta V wont be on the wii u when its clearly a fact that rockstar has came out and said. and im also an idiot because i didnt say spring. yes im an idiot apparently. informing the idiot masses(well…just you) makes me an idiot. thanks for clearing that up

          • jason

Yes. I’m so glad I’m glad we’re both on the same page.

          • Gabe Hoffman

Rockstar never said they don’t plan on putting GTA V on Wii U they simply said they have not announced anything yet

          • Grodus

Guess there’s a lot more idiots than a thought! Like me…

        • BloopbopBeepbop

We have three special editions also, like Mass Effect 3, Batman Arkham City Armored Edition, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U Edition.

        • Maverick-Hunter

Kudos to Nintenlord he just OWNED j lol

        • mbouthe

I dont play GTA, dont like this kind of game.
My interest will be on Bayonetta 2, Assasin Creed 3 and Batman Arkham City, these kind of tittles I like, but however for Batman AC I already played in in my PS3 now … well…

      • Nko Sekirei

not quite dude wat i heard from another article from rockstar they said they are hinted on putting grand theft auto 5 on the wii u didnt say it wasnt possible

      • XDLugia

Spring 2013 does not apply to June and July…
Also if Rockstar follow their tradition, then I can say that it comes in May for Xbox 360 and PS3.

      • SH*TBLOCK

1st, J is eh at best and if he is a fan of Nintendo he’s on the scale of fan-boy like 15% for only thinking their was only two 3rd party exclusives…

2nd, Mac and all. I hope Nintendo tries bringing everything they can our way. All 3rd party games. Hell the porting cost is very cheap like already stated. I personally don’t like GTA games but I would love to get GTA5 or a Red Dead Redemption 2 from Rockstar on the U. Listen it makes common sense because if you can get 95% of 3rd party games to your console, that means more choices to it, which will help sell your console exclusives, which in turn keep your console owners from getting another console, or even better get others buying your console over-all…

      • VongolaMafia

Its set to release spring next year not summer

    • Captain Potato

I’m thinking the “j” stands for jerkface?

      • LolWatTurtles

I would like to point out to Mac that Rockstar has never said that they have no plans for releasing it on the Wii U. If so, give me a link please. All Rockstar has said about the Wii U that i’ve read so far is that they’re unsure of the controller for some reason.

    • PACMAN

Hopefully the setback gives them time to improve their games. If they don’t which I suspect they will I would be very dissappointed.

    • dr scoobie

pikmin is way more fun than gta in my opinion

  • Alienfish

Cool, I just hope they are still refining those games and not simply sitting on them until they feel like they want us to have them.

  • Nintendomination

    • Master of Awesomeness

I am the great olimar! You all are my pikmin!

      • Maverick-Hunter

        I call rock pikmin

        • ncv144

          I call Yellow Pikmin

    • VX

It will all be worth it in the end, fellow Pikmaniac!

  • Yodin

I can wait does not bother me i’d rather have a good game not being rushed. I am still buying Pikmin 3.

  • Alex

I knew that this would happen because Nintendo was very busy putting third party games that they didn’t have the time to make first party games.

  • Mida

    Mario kart?!?!?!

    • NintendoMan :D

Mario Kart on the Wii U would be AWESOME!!! You should be able to aim throwing things like bananas and shells with the gamepad. I’m also super excited for a Zelda on Wii U. Just one word: EPIC!!!! 😀 😀 😀

      • Owen

No, that would be a gimmick. Plus it wouldnt help that only one person could aim that way at a time in local multi player.

        • BubbleMan v2

It could be an option. It may seem like a gimmick, but as long as it isn’t forced it wouldn’t hurt the actual gameplay. Plus, it would be cool to do that just once, like playing with the wii remote on Mario Kart Wii.

        • MrAllOverIt!!!

You do realize that by the time a Mario kart game is released on the Wii-U, it will have long since been updated to support 2 gamepads. Meaning the next Mario kart will likely support it as well. Not just a gimmick, but a major part of how the game will be played.

      • Grodus

I’m good as long as I gots ma’ gyro steering without having to do 1st person view. I actually like that, and I’m probably the only one.

  • Whirlwindyoshi

So the more third party games we get the less first party games we get… I have very mixed feeling about this.

    • Johny

      no lol

    • The Random Man

They’re only delaying it because the games would be much less spread out because of all the games being released at launch. It gives you something to look forward to in the spring and gives games like Pikmin 3 more time to improve itself, and make them more enjoyable.

  • Swic11

Mario kart, and pikmin will, come in due time. I’m personally more excited for Mario kart, I hope the gamepad is used as a rear view mirror! Either way, I hope that GTA V comes out on the U, it would be a nice show of nintendos word saying they are garnering more and more 3rd party support.

    • ssb4 3dsFC3007 8585 6950

      • Swic11

Thanks! I can imagine looking at the gamepad while in first place in Mario kart throwing a green shell at a friend to keep him from overtaking me!

    • LogicalDude

I would love to have GTA V on the WIi-U, especially if I can choose weapons with the gamepad and have the option to view the map on it as well.

Mario Kart U using the gamepad will be interesting. Using the gamepad screen as a rear view mirror seems logical as it’s a function with some racing games on the PS3 if you sync the PSP with it. I wouldn’t mind being able to select courses and characters with the gamepad but I can see everyone repeatedly hammering the one part of the screen where Yoshi appears.

  • grandlx2

No big deal. Plenty of games in the launch window to keep everyone busy. And to that life deprived child screaming where’s gta v.. Bro, go outside and breath some fresh air. If rockstar wants to bring gta v, great. If not, I don’t care. I don’t buy nintendo systems because of gta games… never have. And never will. I buy them for the Nintendo games, and if there’s good third party games I buy those too. Surprisingly, this time i’m actually buying more third party games than first party games because they are actually good. I have the money to buy whatever game i want, so why not, right? 🙂

    • j

The point was if we are “deprived” from big third party titles like gta v then who’s to say we’ll get support from other big titles. I like ubisoft, but I want other titles from other publishers, too. What’s funny is that you’re primarily buying third party titles, so why you hatin’, bro? It’s also nice to know that you’re a spoiled brat, who’s mommy buys them whatever he wants. Douche.

      Have a nice day 🙂

      • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

Who the hell said it was his mother that buys his games? He most likely worked for his money, and if it’s his money he can do what he wants with it. It’s nice to know that people with a little extra cash intimidate you.

      • Nintenlord

Tell me have you ever bought a gta game on the first year of a console life also have you ever see any rockstar game on launch ? No thats what i though

      • NoPUNintendo

Oh cry some more about GTA V. It’s not like the best game in the entire universe that will only have 1,000 copies and will never be resold in stores.

      • PKUltima

Shouldn’t moderators keep people like you from posting hateful comments? We need the Troll-Patrol!

        • Nintendude

          Ya, where did he go?

      • Grodus

I don’t get how you get “you’re a spoiled brat” out of “I have money for stuff I want,” but, I would like to. So explain. Explain away with your flawed logic.

  • Teves153

Ooh boy pikmin fans will not be happy

    • Shane

      I’m a Pikmin fan, and I’m happy.

  • Trev

Metroid!! I hope there will be another metroid soon!

  • [000]

This is the same thing they did with the 3DS launch. They held off on 1st party because of the 3rd party.

    • NintendoYOU

Yeah, and look at how that turned out. They had to do a price cut to catch sales again. I love Nintendo, but they rely do suck at launch windows.
Pikmin 3 was the first party title i was most looking forward to. We haven’t had a Pikmin game since GC and we just had a dam 2d Mario. And their complaining about releasing things to close together how about at least a year between 2d Mario’s rather then 6 months

  • metroidfusion2

Why is everyone bitching about zelda,metroid,3d mario, mario kart, donkey kong,f zero, starfox and other games nintendo takes their time with their big games and now since nintendo can do a lot more things with the wii u let them take their time I would not want rushed games

  • xamy

it doesn’t matter to me if gta does not come to wii u but if it does it will be great!

    • Nintenlord

Im more concerned that farcry came to the wiiu than gta 5 maybe the lack ofa gta on wiiu will give thq a good chance to port saints row the third and square sleeping dogs

  • srpg2ishere

It doesn’t matter to me lol. I can’t afford them anyway. I’ll be happy if i can at LEAST get another wii u game buy christmas with nintendo land. BTW, ive never played a pikmin game before people tell me that its good would anyone please tell me what pikmin is beacuase there have been thoughts about whether i should get pikmin3

    • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

I’ve never played a pikmin game, but I’m definitely getting pikmin 3. Its mostly a puzzle game, where you control these ant-like pikmin and have them do various things to collect fruit in a certain time. There are 6 (maybe more) known types of pikmin, each capable of different things. You’ve got to use the pikmin and theor traits to help them survive. You’ve also got to protect them from monsters that will eat them.

    • Nintendofan

Pikmin is a real time strategy game where you control dozens and even hundreds of different pikmins in order to accomplish certain tasks in certain places. There are different type of pikmins which are used for specific tasks, to defeat certain enemies, etc.. In the first 2 games, you had to find pieces of your spaceship n different areas in order to get your spaceship working again. But it is kinda of a complex game to explain, you should go watch a video of pikmin 1 or 2 in order to understand it even better.

      • BubbleMan v2

Just dozens of pikmin. The limit, unless it changes (which I doubt), is 100 pikmin in the field at a time. Also, it is only the first game that you searched for pieces of your spaceship. Pikmin 2 involved searching for treasures and other seemingly valuable objects in order to pay off the debt that was crippling the company the protagonist worked for.

        Just saying…

  • MujuraNoKamen

Awww come on, they could have at least launched Pikmin 3 on day 1 instead of delaying it for something else, in a way that philosophy about spreading out games makes sense but Pikmin 3 was going to be a bigger hit & system seller than say Sing party. It’s a real shame that Pikmin and Lego City – my must have games from the ones announced (still waiting for Zelda and Metroid) – got set back, I only hope that the delay can be used to fully optimize the game and graphics, it would be completley stupid if they’re just delaying the game for the sake of spreading out titles. To me it makes more sense to release as many games including all the current launch titles and the said “system-sellers” at launch day to get the best titles out first (providing that they’re ready and not unfinished) to get more attention for Wii U. I dont want Nintendo to be in a position in which prospects for the console look bleak as hype dies down fairly quickly and people will wait a few months to get their hands on the good games. This is what happened to 3DS, it didn’t release with top-tier titles (Mario 3D land and OoT 3D) so people waited a while, this lead to low sales and Nintendo making a loss. Fortunately 3DS has been a remarkable turn around since the price cut and the release of Mario Kart, OoT 3D etc. lets just hope Wii U doesn’t get a similar slow start.

  • lakersfan

I don’t know why nobody’s mentioning Starfox as possibly the next 1st party game. I believe that’s what Retro is working on. Not Metroid. I’d be thrilled with either game though.

    • Nintenlord

Maybe both has retro has moved to a bigger office

    • Grodus

      Paper Mario character says:

what’s wrong? i didnt know that so many people don’t like rayman legend’s.i think that it will be awsome.

      you people are crazy…………..

      • ncv144

No, No, No, its the “fear the fearless, nintendo” thing people are tired of. We all (or most of us) love rayman but we are fricken pissed of your fear fearless nintendo thing.

  • nintendoododo

seriously no one gives shit about other games than mario and pikmin.

    • Swic11

And that’s exactly why Nintendo is holding off. 3rd parties know that they can’t compete with nintendos top franchises, so Nintendo is giving the 3rd parties breathing roomi for sales, that way they have success and want create even more games for Nintendo. It’s all marketing strategy.

      • WarioForever

I agree with you and I like how your brain is working. 😀

        • Swic11

          I try

      • MinowaEli

      • nintendoododo

Idiot. I didn’t mean it generally. I just said what we really want. All mario games, smash bros and pikmin. Metroid prime and zelda can die.

        • PKUltima

I’m sorry that you don’t like Zelda or Metroid, but don’t troll people because you don’t like them. I don’t like Pikmin or racing games but you don’t see me trolling people.

        • Jed

Zelda die? This guy should have like a million down votes.

        • Nintendude

Zelda and Metroid can die?! BLASPHEMY! May Miyamoto have mercy on your soul! Take him to the dungeon!

        • Grodus

Zelda and die should not be in the same sentence without being interrupted by the words “made [insert terrible dead game series here].”

    • NoPUNintendo

Seriously, a lot of people give cares about other games besides Mario and Pikmin. If Mario and Pikmin were the only games to buy, I’d never get a Wii U. I’m getting the Wii U because it will, basicly be, the biggest game console to date. We are at a time with more game developers than we were back in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s.

  • cdude

Dammit. I really wanted lego city for christmas.

  • Jetty

Last paragraph. That’s all that matters. That’s worth the Wii U alone.

  • Marioravesto3d

I had a customer at work today complaining big games get released at the same time so he couldn’t purchase both games and this always happens,I explained of nintendo plan for wii u they have a great titles for release day then every so often release a massive title which is good for consumer and nintendo them selfs.

  • theorangefish

I can’t see anything from the so called “great support”.
I already played All (imo) interesting games on different systems.Doesn’t matter
…… I still won’t get it until August 2013 because I just don’t need a new console right now.

  • Arsonist Monkey

That’s Nintendo, appealing to the Casuals and Hardcores. Innovation, unlike the Playstation. YEAYA!

    • MinowaEli

The only casual title that’s still in its prime for the PS3 that I could think of is LBP, which is fantastic!

    • Smokey cheese

I like games so will be getting a WiiU.i also have Ps3 which means I get to play games that I won’t be multi platform like
      Ni No Kuni
      Dust 514
      Beyond 2 Souls
      The Last Of Us

Choice is a beautiful thing but then again they say ignorance is bliss. You must be blissfully happy.

  • Peanut

I don’t really care about zelda wii u yet, I’m waiting for either Majora’s mask 3d or a new zelda for the 3ds.(I have not played MM so MM 3d will be a new game for me)

    • frank (3dsFC=5155-3120-0417)

My first zelda game was Ocarina of Time 3D. Its sad, I know, but at least I got one of the best games in the serires to start off with. I will probably getting skyward sword for christmas 🙂

      • Peanut

Same Oot 3d was my first Zelda too,but I now own TP and SSword. Although the 1st Zelda I ever played was my brother’s Oracle of Ages.

        • Jed

Every Zelda is unique and epic. Wind Waker is one of my favorites. It is cell shaded graphics, but the ocean world is huge and great. It is a completely immersive game.

        • Jed

The new HD Zelda should be great on the Wii U.

          • Peanut

Ye I want WW so much.So I’m hoping the wii u will have it for download.

  • SuperShyGuy

Nintendo is really trying to put third party up front. Now it’s time for them to step up. We all know that the Nintendo games will be of the highest quality now lets see what the third party can do.

Nintendo should save their games for dry months

  • Future1

Nintendo this is smart. The ultimate show of respect and support is not trying to overshine. Imo I think they should drop a game that no one saw coming in april or may. Shake up the industry. I should be done with my 5 games by then.

  • link 5

    Most unexpected

  • Madmagican

PIKMIN 3 COULD’VE BEEN A LAUNCH TITLE!?!?!? …*sigh* I guess it’s better to push it back and give some time to do some touch-ups though… I’ll be waiting in March for my pikmin

  • Bruno Cascimiro

It’s been a long time since a Nintendo console had huge third party support, they are just letting all these games be in the spotlight, that’s why we won’t be seeing games like Metroid, Mario 3D, zelda on the Wii U launch.

  • AceshHigh

Makes perfect sense. Too many consoles are released with no new games after the intial launch. Taking my Nintendo fanboy hat off for just a sec, I truly feel that this is going to be the greatest console launch – through the entire first year – in console history. and I’ve been following launches for the last 35 years. Nintendo is doing a GREAT job so far!

  • Realities

    • Superstick

The POINT of buying a console is for entertainment. It always has been. And after all these years
      Nintendo kept me entertained so..

  • LP

I know some people will feel as I do, I hope all you guys understand. I buy Nintendo because of Nintendo products. I believe it should be the other way around, Third party games and stuff may wait, Nintendo products should be priority for Nintendo console, more so when we are talking about creating hype and selling tons, for a launch of a new console.

    • Maverick-Hunter

While i agree with you those traitors who consider themselves hardcore gamers forget where they got all their skills from (every nintendo system) so in Oder to get the coins back from said traitors nintendo has to appeal to “hardcore gamers” by spamming the games they consider hardcore I for one want more nintendo games but most of our own have been corrupted by flashy graphics and online co op I say just give it some time soon nintendo will hold all the cards and all the coins making everyone else not even want to play 😛

  • Linskarmo (3DS FC: 5284-2360-9145)

I hope LEGO City Undercover isn’t delayed too much. I’m looking forward to it. And I hope the first party games that are being delayed will be made better during the wait. An abundance of 3rd party support is always great!

    • Superstick

Me either. I was looking foward to playing Lego City Undercover on launch day. Eh. Too bad.

  • Maverick-Hunter

Oh my god who gives a crap about gta V. Gives me and what the rest of the world needs, which is of course more MEGAMAN!!!!!! screw all this realistic trash give me the x buster, hard ass levels, extremely difficult boss room with like 4 health bars. Cmon capcom don’t get left I’m the dust bring us your mascot megaman step up your game gosh darn it >.<

    • are you being sarcastic sir?… Grand Theft Auto V will be probably the most important third party game this generation due to projection sales.

  • kyuubikid213

“[Hints of a] Metroid as well.”

  • ncv144

They should make a remake of Wind Waker (seriously if you dont know what i am talking about you cant call yourself a nintendo fan). Also LUIGI’S MANSION FOR THE WII U!!

  • EXCUSE ME, strong third party support? haha. Look John, most of the biggest 2013 titles are not coming to Wii U. Castlevania LoS2, Fuse, Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Metal Gear Solid Revengeance, Phantom Pain (MGS5?), Crysis 3, etc. The only exception is Aliens Colonial Marines and I have a feeling it won’t be as good as we’re hoping for.

Now for the time the Wii U launched real blockbusters like Borderlands 2 and Dishonored skipped the system. The only exceptions are Assasin’s Creed 3 and Call of duty BO2. I haven’t heard a word about Square Enix or EA games bringing something big. Then the system has virtually no exclusives Rayman Legends is not the kind of hardcore game PS360 customers are authentically looking for and Zombie U was given a cold shoulder by the press. It’s not a good game.

For now Nintendo are relying on their fan base and a few enthusiastics out there. Problem is, Nintendo will need to prove to the whole industry the Wii U is capable of big sales. And probably by the time they accomplish this by launching a first party title, PS4 and Xbox 720 will be here, Oopsie, I think Mr. Iwata is full of crap, he’s clearly lying… From my perspective, Wii U has the right price, but fails to deliver a sufficiently appealing controller or even more importantly games, many don’t like to hear it or accept it, but their GamePad is more distracting than functional in the real world. I wonder if any has tried Batman Arkham City on Wii U?. It’s really tough to ask third party developers to make a title from the ground up for this system when they are not even porting their best existing games to Wii U in this moment. The reason is the industry is not supporting the Wii U because people in Japan (capcom, konami, namco, etc) and the west (already mentioned them above) because they don’t trust Nintendo’s business model, they failed to capture sufficient incomes with the first Wii, and please consider Wii had a HUGE install base, it’s not surprising the indifference companies are showing today. People nowadays don’t want to take big risks.

However I see Wii U as the future for Indy developers and middle class developers companies since it will be infinitely cheaper to develop for than say PS4 or Xbox 720. Big Developers will make games for the Wii U eventually, but I assure you they won’t be the quality titles you are expecting to see. It makes no sense, period.

Iwata is telling this because he knows and I know this: fans will believe anything he says because they love Nintendo so much and they are completely blinded by their feelings.
