Today a stream on Japanese site NicoNico revealed the title of the new Fatal Frame game, as well as an exclusive look at some of the gameplay and screenshots of the game running on Wii U. The game is said to revolve around the fear of water and will use the GamePad in unique ways to exploit this. Be sure and check out the trailer above, even though it’s in Japanese. You’ll find some HD screenshots below as well.

The game is scheduled to be released on September 27 in Japan, with no mention made for a Western release. If you want this game outside of Japan, now is the time to make a big stink about it and hope Nintendo of America/Europe notice.

  • Adrian

So is this a Horror/atmospheric mystery?

    • DJKeens

That’s a fairly accurate description. Kind of like RE. Explore a creepy mansion with ghosts instead of mutants and attack with an old box camera instead of a gun. You have to be in first person to use use the camera which limits mobility like Other M. Spirits fade in and out of view and can sometimes only be seen through the camera. Sounds cumbersome but that’s really the thrill. Run then switch to camera and snap a picture. The closer and more complete the shot the more damage but you’re usually pretty squishy sooo. Really great games and I’m excited for this!

      • Alan Michael Hensley

thats how the gameplay in Fatal Frame 1-3 was, in the fourth one that they made for the Wii, they changed the camera from a first person view, to an over the shoulder view like in RE4. So I imagine that this game will be similar, although i would assume you would hold the gamepad up to the screen as the camera

        • DJKeens

Ah. Never played the Wii one. I gotta imagine the first person view makes it a bit more thrilling. I mean you have to gimp yourself in order to attack which can be nerve racking. Over the shoulder seems like it would take away that tension. Might have to try it out. Though the gamepad as a camera should prove to be a great method if used well.

          • Alan Michael Hensley

especially if on the gamepad you can see what your camera is looking at, but the tv screen shows the game as normal, so you may have to look up to see that there may be a spirit behind you

          • DJKeens

I was thinking the reverse. There’d be auditory or visual cues that a ghost is in a room but can only be seen through the gamepad. Frantic gamepad flailing engage!

  • thedeciderU

Nintendo, NOA, whoever, please make this available outside japan!

    • Dark Lord Sauron

lets start a petition and get people on board especially on miiverse as well

      • Where on miiverse?

        • uPadWatcher

Anywhere… especially games from Koei Tecmo (and NIntendo of America published Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge).

          • ThatΒ΄s the only game from them on the WiiU? IsnΒ΄t Hyrule Warriors also from them? O.o

          • 504HotBoy

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper, Hyrule Warriors, Fatal Frame: The Black Hair Shrine Maiden. I think that’s all the games they have on Wii U. They may have 1 or 2 more, but I’m sure of those 4.

  • Yoshiwhirlwind

I think its about time for Nintendo to start pushing gamepad wrist straps.

  • Rinslowe

This is one game I would much like to have in my Wii U library. Looks goood. Nintendo – Europe, Oceania and US needs this title too…

  • Ducked

Oh please come to North America! This game looks amazing! I like the more roaming around mystery style of the game.

  • lonewolf88

    pffffft kids game.

    • soralifestory

ikr look all this cosplaying and flashlights

    • uPadWatcher

Yeah… and The Last of Us is a kids game, Wolfy boyfriend.

      • Josie the Sketcher

Hell no! The Last of Us is for toddlers.

        • uPadWatcher

Now THAT is a winner, Josie. I like that.. LOL

        • thedeciderU

baby joel will appear in mario kart 9

  • soralifestory

Bullshots no way this is running on the Wiik U…………………….. said every xbox one and PS4

  • David Trail

I can’t believe IGN haven’t got this up yet.

    • Merry_Blind

IGN are very slow with Wii U news. They just don’t care about it since it doesn’t gather as much clicks as PS4 and X1 I suppose.

      • Andrew Clear

Why do people still mention X1 with PS4 as the most popular systems? Wii U still has a bigger install base than X1, and while PS4 is competing hard against X1, neither are really competing against Wii U. I believe Wii U will finish 2nd this generation because of that PS4 X1 battle.

        • Merry_Blind

I’m not talking about sales and install base…

Just that IGN’s audience mainly is Playstation and Xbox consumers. Their PS and X pages have much more traffic and clicks than their Wii U and PC page I’m sure.

        • Capt. Smoker

Unfortunately most gamers these days are meat heads with no appreciation for a game that doesn’t contain violence and guns, whatever facts and figures you throw at it, Wii U don’t have or cater to that tripe, so it ain’t gonna be popular with the IGN crowd, I’d love Wii U to sell more and finish a healthy second but I doubt it will, even kids these days, are mostly only into mature games (bad parenting), the Wii U won’t do bad, not at all, it just won’t do as good, personally though, I’m sticking with only the Wii U this gen, it’s all I need, plus, nobody wants to deal with the XB1 and PS4 fanboys.

    • thedeciderU

      they are biased

  • Justin Graham

make it happen NOA ill buy it

  • mojack411

If Criminal Girls can get localized, so can this. I feel like Japan in general have been very good about localizing games as of late.

  • felony211662

Thank God its not RE7!!! I would want this for my U. My daughter and i watched Dansgaming let’s play of the original so i’m going to my mom and pop shop TRX games to find that or ff2 for ps2

  • Andrew Clear

with how small this current gen install base is, it would be stupid not to release any game outside of Japan. Also, with how low console install bases are now in Japan, it is really stupid not to release console games (unless they were very cheap budget titles) outside of Japan.

Japan only 3DS games makes sense.

  • Ryushi

So… Will we get any information in the form of a stream for America, even just a formal announcement? Where’s the full stream?

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

This looks actually preatty good :3 pretty girls hehe, and some cool looking envoirments, but still. it needs the more horror feel!

    • Shota

More horror feel? Have you actually played the fatal frame games?

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

Nope ^_^ but this will be my first if it comes to EU :3

    • Ernie Sanguyo

Trust me it will have more horror feel. This video didn’t show much at all. I have played part 1-4 and all of them is scary. I got plenty jump scared on it while all the latest Resident evil aren’t horror survival anymore πŸ™

      • Alexander Kleinwechter

Ohh thats goood, i kinda based my opinion on the trailer xD my bad. But good to hear ^_^ i look forward to this game

  • FIreproof_actual

Textures looks very…meh…hopefully it a least runs smoothly…

    • Merry_Blind

Yeah texture quality is pretty much the ONE thing Wii U games lack IMO. Everything else is top-notch EXCEPT textures.

  • Nintendoro

    West release please!!!!!

  • I want this!

  • greengecko007

Looks pretty interesting. A game like this will definitely give the Wii U’s library more variety. Hopefully the developers feel confident enough about it to release it outside of Japan.

  • darkcreap

I support that this game comes to the west, but I am kind of reluctant to sign in any campaign because that would provide a wrong impression on the market potential of the game. I don’t know if I will like this game.

How are the game mechanics of this game? Is it anything like ZombiU? I bought it with my WiiU, but it takes me a lot to finish it due to the punishing system the game has. I think survival horror games are not my cup of tea.

I’ve seen sales numbers for the Fatal Frame games and they usually get pretty low sales number even in Japan. I see it unlikely that they release it in the west, which is a pity.

Game looks sick! Reggie, Iwata, get off your duffs and get this game outside Japan pronto!
I don’t want another Xenoblade/Last Story type situation either. Do it from the get-go!

    • Arthur Jarret

Tweeted and facebooked – but ignored the change.org petition as these are ignored by Nintendo… I also don’t want to use a platform with world-changing potential just to get a piece of mass consumer entertainment translated. It devalues all other petitions on there.

It has proved to be able to free political prisoners, promote human rights, force banks and insurance companies to take responsibility to their customers, force governments to aid their ailing citizens and accept political refugees in the country, could potentially be used to expose the health risks by monsanto’s genetically manipulated food as well as their monopolization of the world’s food.

Petitions concerning luxury items feel wrong somehow in light of that. Already it has become lolchange.org for most companies and political parties.

If a company or government receives a 100K petition now – for instance to ask them to stop child labour, they just go: ‘oh, that’s only 1K more than the people who wanted PuyaPuya lovefest XL on the Wii U – just ignore it.’

Concerning Nintendo specifically, though. I honestly believe repetitive nagging on miiverse has more effect on them.

  • Petri

    I want.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

It’s likely going to remain in Japan, or have a European release. Good luck to North America getting this.

    • Except the devs said the last time that they regret not localizing it and they wouldn’t make that mistake again.

      • thedeciderU

if i didn’t already have a wii u, i’d buy the system for this game. it better damn well have a NA release hahaha

        • I bet its Q1 2015 for North America.

          • thedeciderU

            let’s hope so

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Never believe everything you read. I know I don’t. Have a good one.

        • thedeciderU

regardless, at this point it could hurt nintendo more than help them to not release globally, no?

        • Rinslowe

Funnily enough, that holds very true for your comments…

    • ben

Daniel why do you even come to this site…?

Your trolling gets more and more butthurt by the day.

      • oontz

        Wow “butthurt” really?

        • thedeciderU

          sounds unpleasant.

      • D.M.T

Because he needs attention that’s why.

    • uPadWatcher

I can smell the soreness of your red ass, Danny Gonzo.

      • Michael Ocampo

        Dude, just calm down, man…

  • uPadWatcher

Nintendo and Koei-Tecmo needs to localize this new Fatal Frame Wii U exclusive to North America and Europe. The Full HD graphics (1080p), story line, and the effectiveness of the Game Pad controller are second to none.

  • Capt. Smoker

Love this series, it’s about the only horror franchise I’ll touch, it’s the only one out there still capable of making me shit my pants πŸ™‚

    • thedeciderU

silent hill? well, 1-3 anyways. i don’t know much about the others.

      • Capt. Smoker

It used to scare me on ps1, saying that, even dino crisis scared me a little, but in recent years short of the F.E.A.R games, nothing scared me, then I discovered this series and was psychologically bent over and terrified ^^

        • thedeciderU

haha. i have played through f.e.a.r. 2 and it was a great game, but i wasn’t that scared. i bought the 360 port of the first game and the control ruined it for me. maybe i should give it another go sometime. yeah, dino crisis was great in the atmosphere and making you feel helpless department. i also enjoyed dino crisis 2 although it’s not a survival horror title – it’s all action and it’s like a dinosaur killing arcade game. the replay value is high.

    • oontz

      Play outlast. Amazing.

  • Super Buu

NOA….. I expect you’ll do something for us regarding this game….

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

oh my god, this game looks terrifying. I’m not a huge fan when it comes to survival horror games but I might actually pick this one up just for the experience.

  • Damn this game feels scary too, just watched the trailer and my heart was making overtime. Why didn’t I pick up the Wii version before? Because it was hard to come by and sold out at the time. I guess I’ll go check out the retail stores again in the weekends. Next bring it to the west as well. They did it before on the Wii and (3?)DS edition. Atleast here in Europe but release this world wide pls. Thank you.

  • Andrew St. Clair

Read the comments… Saw the trailer. How scared was I? Not scared at all.

    • uPadWatcher

You failed at understanding Japanese culture. Have you ever seen the movie “Ringu” ?

      • Andrew St. Clair

Actually, I have. I have seen both the American version and Japanese version. I don’t see how seeing the movie is supposed to make this trailer scary.

        • uPadWatcher

I thought you were talking about the video game. My bad, Andrew. However, I do have to agree with you. I hope the American film isn’t released by SONY Pictures since Samuel Hadida have been producing the Resident Evil and Silent Hill pictures in the past.

  • WiiUltra

I don’t imagine this game being scary considering I’m going to be staring at the main character the whole time haha

    • Brodequin

Once again main character is very, very… eee, sensuous

  • Dimitri Soto

graphics look better than watch dogs on ps4

    • uPadWatcher

      1080p >>>> 900p

  • Nick Ruozzi

Please,Please,Please come to U.S. I love Fatal Frame franchise. That game looks fantastic!

  • MujuraNoKamen

Looks pretty creepy. I’d love to give it a go if it comes to Europe and North America. It better do!

  • Nintengoth

    i wants it now!

  • Madmagican

And now we all wait to see if it’ll be localized…..

  • aldo2410

They didn’t show it up in the E3, they don’t show a release date for America and Europe, so choose a god and pray for this game, or even better sign bistricky’s petition

  • FutureFox

This is actually relevant regarding localization despite the focus being JRPGs.

    • uPadWatcher

That was 2 years ago… not to mention that Iwata wasn’t promoted to become CEO of Nintendo of America yet either.

      • FutureFox

I realize that its an old article. I was highlighting the perspective of Western publishers and the challenges they face to localize games in the U.S. Nothing more than that.

  • GmailIsDown

i personally find the ghosts a bit too cute to be scary. it is great that they can get the game out by September 27. it is time for me to buy a Japanese Wii U. glad i’ve been hold off until now. is there going to be a special bundle for this?

  • zelduck

  • Joe Martez

Just signed the petition at change.org, it has 742 signatures but need 5,229 everyone go check it out https://www.change.org/en-AU/petitions/nintendo-of-japan-north-america-localize-and-release-fatal-frame-on-wii-u-worldwide

  • Jonathan Dogey

September?? That’s pretty soon….can’t wait to hear a video on Direct from Iwata apologizing for the fact that they need more time to release it.

  • palomino blue

This looks legitimately scary. Please bring it to the rest of the world.

  • Shy_Guy

If it does come to NA,I hope it sells well. I would love to see survival horror make a comeback.

  • The must have Wii U game that fully uses the gamepad. Dub it and send it our way ASAP Nintendo!

  • Spaniard0069

Holy shit. Never played a game in the series but I would buy this on day one.

  • e_rocket

Looks nice, hope to see it in Mexico…

  • Leo

Why they don’t move their mouths? :/

    • uPadWatcher

Adjust the resolution of the video to 1080p.
