Jan 22nd, 2014

Japanese magazine Famitsu took a poll of its readers to determine the top 20 titles they want to see over the course of 2014. The results are rather surprising, with only one Wii U title making the cut, at number six. What’s interesting to note is that the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. is entirely missing from this list, while the Nintendo 3DS version managed to pop up at number 17. It speaks volumes about Japan’s priority, I think.

Here’s the full list:

its bad b/c not even ssb4 for wiiu was listed. No X either

    • rp17

      Look at number 17 again…

      • bryan

        I said wiiu not 3ds…

  • That guy who hates Spike

    It’s a good list.
Xbox must REALLY not be that popular in Japan, if Titanfall didn’t even make it up there,

    • Brandon

    • ScrewAttack

Have you SEEN Titanfall? Looks incredibly mediocre :p

      • That guy who hates Spike

But is it really less interesting than Puyo Puyo Tetris?

      • Zach Cruz

I played titanfall at both PAX and for alpha and it didn’t play mediocre…

    • PS4/WiiU

the xbox360 gets like 2000 in sales in a month -_-
nobody cares about it in Japan
that’s why they said they are going to make exclusive games in Japan for the Xbox One. So that they start getting more popular in Japan

  • Squid

Nintendo and third party games are in the top.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Urgh why does every poll on this topic insist on putting FF15, KH3 and Phantom Pain in the list? Those games aren’t coming in 2014, give the spotlight to games that are like X – I’m looking at you IGN.

    • That guy who hates Spike

Who knows if X is coming this year?
Also, we know VERY little about it.

      • Michael Hancock

Yeah, like…can we get some more info, thanks.

      • MujuraNoKamen

It could slip into 2015 (I REALLY hope not) but there’s a strong chance that the game is in the later stages of development. Either way Nintendo have said it’ll be released in 2014 so it should be on the list whereas with the aforementioned games even the devs have said don’t expect them any time soon so 2015 might even be optimistic.

  • Brandon

And people say ps4 doesnt have the games needed to pass the wii u(in sales) in Japan.

    • alex toschi

Well it’s still a fair argument since none of the higher listed ones are launch titles.

      • Brandon

Ps4 is going to dominate in japan well in consoles at least cause the 3ds is staying on top

        • alex toschi

I didn’t say it wouldn’t, I think it’ll do very well over the generation. I just don’t see why the mass market of Japanese gamers will buy it at launch when their are hardly any games on the system they are typically interested in. No Final Fantasy at launch, I don’t even think there is any RPG. Just FPS’s, a subpar platformer and Resogun.

  • Joey

Nothing here for me except looking forward to Mario Kart 8…

  • Fred

How is X not #1 on that list?

    • Zuxs13

No one knows anything about it. What’s to get excited about? plus we dont know if its coming out in 2014.

      • Fred

We know enough about it to get excited! The 2 trailers gave plenty of info to get excited.

You’re right about the other point though. We don’t know if it’s coming in 2014, but there were plenty of games on that list that don’t yet have release dates. It could come out in 2014 when you consider the Monolith Soft release Xenoblade in 2010 (In Japan) if they started working on this immediately (maybe they did and maybe they didn’t we have no idea) then it’s completely feasible for them to finish 4 years later (2014). On the other hand of coarse until Nintendo tells us it’s certainly possible that it’s not coming this year, but I’d be past SHOCKED if every game on that list came out this year.

        • Zuxs13

Well the trailer is cool but says very little about the game, and its not a franchise like Kingdom hearts or FF so just announcing it wont get people excited. I am sure after E3 people will be crazy about this game it looks amazing so far.

          • Fred

I assure you, if you had played Xenoblade you’d be stoked. You’re correct though it’s not established like Kingdom Hearts or FF. That’s why I think the best thing they could do for the sales of X is give away free download copies of Xenoblade today. Give people time to play it and then bring out X.

  • Yen

On the topic of Smash Bros. I want to get both versions because I really like the series, but does anyone else feel like it’s a bad idea to do a 3DS version? Unless the 3DS version gives an incentive to get both versions, wouldn’t it just cannibalize the Wii U version’s sales? So far the only difference between them we know of is different stages and graphics right?

    • Zuxs13

Well the Wii U sales will be terrible any way so at least the 3DS version will allow Nintendo to be profitable in the sales of the game.

      • Yen

What I was getting at is, maybe if they had it on Wii U only, Wii U sales wouldn’t be terrible. Unless there’s some incentive to have both or only the Wii U version that we don’t know about yet.

        • Zuxs13

It will be terrible, there’s barley 5 million Wii U’s out there so maybe 6 by the time it comes out. It will probably sell around 300k world wide then. By releasing the 3DS version there will be millions sold, which will make the online play much more enjoyable no matter what platform you use.
The incentive of buying both will be being able to play your character at home or on the road. There will be cross platform play.

  • MetroidZero

    I see a Super Smash for 3DS..guess that includes the Wii U version…but, 17th???

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

My most wanted game is X by Monolith Soft….I dream of the day when I can play that game non-stop…24/7. The wait…my gosh! >.<

  • Sam

Well, we do have 7/20, and Microsoft has 0…

  • e_rocket

This does not look good… just one wii u game, I’m sad!!!

  • LordiMcKill

Hold on a second, they listed The Evil Within twice but for different platforms! What’s wrong with just stating that it’s multiplatform game and allow others to make the list?

And where the hell is Smash Bros.??

  • To be fair, we’ve not seen much of x so you can only get so excited for it. I expect it to be better than Final fantasy XV but I’m always disappointed by final fantasy games and their hype.

  • Mario

What the heck!? Thay’re anticipading the 3ds version. But not the WiiU version? O.o

    • Zuxs13

      Its simple math really

      • Mario

        What does that mean?

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

So there you have it friends, another evidence of why many people dont want a Wii U. So dont be surprised here.

But be positive, we have to wait for E3 announcements…

  • David Horowitz

    What about Smash Bros?

  • ETeach

Well, I want a few of these. Also nice to see Watchdogs making the list on a Japanese poll. I am pretty surprised the 3ds ersion of smash is more wanted than the wiiU one, though.

    • Zuxs13

10x more 3DS owners in Japan than Wii U owners = more people desiring the 3DS version.

      • ETeach

Yeah, that makes sense. Still, I’ve seen a lot of people talking about getting WiiUs lately just so they can have what they consider the better version of the game.

        • Zuxs13

Let’s hope that trend continues. I love my Wii U .

      • Justin King

You sir have hit the nail on the head, this is exactly the case.
3DS’s are HUGE! right now in Japan.

  • Stephen Macneil

FYI the Rising Sun flag is extremely offensive to certain Asian countries like China and Korea. You might want to not have that there.

  • audi lover

Wii u needs more true rpg most of the top 20 are and they all seem to be for 3ds come on Nintendo spred the rpg love to the wii u

    • ICHI

I can totally buy into that idea, over the last couple of years I have really enjoyed Dark Souls and Dragons Dogma, though neither are going to get Wii U versions I feel nintendo needs games like those to really show off the gamepad. RTS games too are probably the kind of game that Wii U can do better than any other console, but where are they? Battalion Wars 3 please Ninty!

  • SkyStormXD

Ashley King, why don’t you put up a poll, let the people decide!

    • Zuxs13

a poll on a Wii U site? Nah it wouldn’t be bias at all.

  • PS4/WiiU

I really don’t think this is accurate, Japan is the place where Nintendo almost gets the biggest amount of sales. So I would expect more Nintendo titles to be up there. At least say, super smash, X or Mario Kart to be even higher in the list. Although when you think about it, there isn’t that much Nintendo games releasing in 2014 that we know about. Maybe around 10….

    • AceRuby

I think X would for sure be on their if Nintendo released more information about it their hasn’t been much shown since E3 last year (hoping they rectify this in their next Nintendo Direct).

  • CaesarGood

    No Donkey Kong???

  • Zuxs13

Pathetic that a system that isn’t even out yet (in Japan) has more wanted games then one that is over a year old. Ashely you are right this does speak volumes as to where Japan’s priorities are, and its clearly not with the Wii U.

Now all that being said not every game we that will be out in 2014 is known yet and there is very little info on Smash Bros, or X, for the Japanese fans, or the rest of us, to get excited about. So this will likely change and wont equate to the top sellers of the year.

  • Zach Cruz

smash bros should be on their twice for wii u and 3ds, plus no halo? no titanfall? infamous second son? Destiny? Elder Scrolls Online? meh….

    • majora :D

Japan is a whole different world. For instance, most of FPS don’t sell in Japan.

      • Zach Cruz

This is true, good point… however i still think smash bros should be up their twice! haha sorry i get in grumpy mood when it comes to my smash bros

  • CP9Kaku

Final F-ing Fantasy? Seriously? They won’t ever make a FINAL fantasy, will they? Apparently, they haven’t even been that good since no.10.

  • Akatosh

My question: Is Famitsu a generally well rounded proportion of gamers? Or more in relation to say… Game Informer… where Nintendo fans are far a few between?

  • William Cole

I hear Dragon Quest XI will be announced this year… in that case:

    Dragon Quest XI

    Square Enix

    Final Fantasy XV
    Square Enix

  • Justin King

I read all these comments and so many people are misinformed about how things work in JAPAN, NINTENDO isn’t so much #1 so much as the 3DS is, Wii U didn’t even sell that well there either.

The fact about there being 2 Evil within’s is because its that popular and its per game (via system).

Sony has picked up the biggest amount of favoritism and everyone in Japan knows about how bad Nintendo has been doing.

I will agree that games like the Supposed 2015 releases should not be up there but Final Fantasy has and for years to come will probably be a big hit in Japan.

Just Because a genre is good in One Country does not* by any means mean it will sell well or be anticipated the same as in another.

(Personally I hope Nintendo can pull around their projections with the other releases, and they better do something quick or they are really gonna lose money and hope of ever creating another console again, aside from handhelds is gonna wither into the abyss.)

ON X – Monoliths new game, No even with the 2 trailers not enough is known for a person to make an INFORMED choice on whether they would like it or not, and by that i mean a proper choice, not oh wow shiny graphics or wow sci fi or wow robots.
They need proper gameplay teasers to show off if there is anything new, Lore, something that sets it apart, what kind of rpg is it, is it standard action rpg? is there any customization. etc etc.

I hope it turns out great though as it could be a niche game that might pickup some more sales for the Wii U though not likely enough to sport a difference between Sony. Atm, in Japan at least, Sony is King possibly for all of 2014 but only time will tell.
