If you unwrapped your shiny new Wii U or Nintendo 3DS and were excited to get connected to the Nintendo eShop to see all the great games available, you may have encountered a problem. According to Nintendo, the rush in holiday sales for both the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U has flooded the servers, making it hard to access any of the online services. This seems to be attributed to the ability to link the Nintendo 3DS to the Nintendo Network ID service.

The recent system update added the ability to link a Nintendo Network ID with a Nintendo 3DS family system. This has become a popular feature and the number of users creating a Nintendo Network ID on their Nintendo 3DS and accessing the Nintendo eShop has been greater than anticipated. Because of this, there may be times when some users will experience service disruptions to the Nintendo eShop. If you are having problems accessing the Nintendo eShop, we ask that you try again at a later time.

Nintendo has acknowledged the problem on their support page and says they’re working to fix it for their new users, but asks that people continue to have patience as the service is adjusted to accommodate all the new console owners.

It’s disappointing, I have 50 bucks to spend, and no eShop to do so on.

    • ENDOT123

it will be back soon just relax.

    • starwars360

It is like Sony where they always shutdown online service to fixing better and improves it so Nintendo did same route with Sony unlike Microsoft where always fixing online service while online is still on. πŸ™‚

Be patience. Simply patience. Easy accept it. It is happen when online services having problems. πŸ™‚

  • mojack411

Mhmm, I noticed this problem when I went to get SM3DW 2 days ago. I kept getting error after error and when I finally made it to the confirmation page, it turned out I was out of space! So I had to clear space then come back and go through error after error again. Eventually I finally started the download and from there it was smooth sailing. Hopefully the strain is relieved in some shape or form for the flood of people wanting to buy things with their pre-paid cards like me.

    • olajuwon_patterson

thats fucked up and also hilarious lmao

  • Sander van der Ham

This is only part of the problem. There has also been a massive overload on users wanting to download and use Pokemon Bank in Japan. Nintendo has removed Pokemon Bank from the Eshop in Japan and pushed back the release date for the US and EU regions too because of this.

    • It’s like they dont expect people to want their stuff

  • crocodileman94

Can’t say I’m surprised. I’m pretty sure this happened to the last gen too.

    • ShilaquilOneal

It also happened this x-mas on Steam and PSN. Its not something that only affected Nintendo.

      • Graeme Lynch

I was literally freaking out when Steam store went down. I required my daily Steam purchase.

  • Sdudyoy

Luckily I manged to download A link between worlds on my new 3DS.

    • あまてらす

Wow, you are lucky. I’ve been trying for the last 24 hours, but no luck.

      • Sdudyoy

I know I just keep trying for an hour until I got in long enough to download it.

    • Mendoza Manuel

Came so close to the download screen at 2 am…error message hit me right before…time to keep trying, and contribute to the high traffic, haha

    • [000]

Somehow I was able to get on the Wii U eShop today, and I redeemed a prepaid card, but then it gave me an error code and the funds weren’t added to my balance, but when I tried to enter in the code again, it said the code had already been redeemed. And yet, my balance still remained the same. I was going to try exiting the eShop then turn off and on my Wii U to see if it would be fixed, but after that I could no longer access the eShop.

I hope to god when everything gets fixed it gets redeemed properly. Has this happened to anyone else here? I saw it happen to a few others on some forums in the past 2 days on the Nintendo support site. This person had my problem:

      • It will be. When I added funds to buy Mario 3D World, it didnt update my balance on the side, and kicked me out of the eshop, but when I went back in and tried to purchase, it showed my balance at 80 cents on the side, but on the purchase screen, it showed the correct amount. Dont worry! It’s there πŸ™‚

      • Sdudyoy

I really hope for you that everything works out! I’m really sorry that that happened to you.

      • The Mystical One

Call the customer service number once they aren’t crazy busy if the funds don’t get added. They are usually super good at fixing that kind of thing.

      • dimmer77

I had this exact problem yesterday. Shut off the Wii U for a few hours and came back to the eShop and my balance was there.

  • tronic307

Happy Holidays everybody! I haven’t been able to get on the Wii U eShop since yesterday, can anyone tell me what got released on the VC?

  • The Clockwork Being

    PlayStation Vita TV – 5,504 (5,506)
    Wii – 1,711 (1,197)
    Xbox 360 – 763 (536)

Edit:Sorry Ashley I did’t see the article for some reason…

    • Speedy Petendo

Just wait a few days, they will get to it.

      • It’s already up. Check the main page. Heh.

        • The Clockwork Being

Sorry Ashley I did’t see the article for some reason…

    • ShilaquilOneal

The thing that I noticed, is that the Wii U actually has sold more than the PS3 this year (YTD).

To be fair, the PS3 is a 7-8 year old console & everyone who ever wanted a PS3 in Japan probably already got it.

But still, why can’t we celebrate small victories now and then?

    • ScrewAttack

Always makes me lol to see 360’s sales numbers over there. I’m surprised M$ are gonna bother sending the bone to Japan at all. Surprised PS3 sales are so low though….guess Sony fans over there are waiting on their PS4 preorders!

      • GuardiansFan

although i don’t see the xbox one doing well overall i expect it to do better this time around than the 360 did in its lifetime because the Kinect is built in. People over there seem to love games that think outside the box and i just think that is very likely to happen…i also expect Microsoft to put out more games geared towards the Japanese market this time around.

Edit: I should point out it shouldnt be too hard to do better than the 360 πŸ™‚

        • ICHI

K?! More games, the first few years of the 360 had a butt load of Japanese neiche games to try and better the original Xbox, and still no one bought any. Considering it had blue dragon, star ocean and chromehounds you would think that would get people going. I don’t have high hopes for the bone in Japan

  • Justagamer

Well Wii U doing better than the haters claim..Who knew?
Myself I love my Wii U and will continue to do so

  • Random12multi

Thank you guys for Reporting on this πŸ˜€

  • Superbax

I got my new Zelda 3ds and I couldn’t download the game due to the eshop being down. Hopefully this gets resolved soon since I really want to play zelda.

  • e_rocket

I haven’t been able to access the store since yesterday… this has to be a big problem, they’ll lose many sales

  • Ducked

No lie, I’ve been trying to get on all day

  • LoBo_UK

Not been able to access eshop since Christmas eve

  • I couldn’t download my pikmin 3 update to try out my new hard drive and see if it can actually install, as opposed to crashing on install like my old one

  • Donaald

How much did the install base increase?

    • Michael DeVore

Several Million since 3ds sales between Black Friday to Christmas would be most likely Christmas Gifts. There isn’t a clear cut total for Black Friday so I’ll take the week ending on Nov 23rd to the week ending Dec 7th.

      ~2 million 3DS units
      ~0.5 million WiiU units

That’s excluding two and a half weeks up to Christmas, and any units that would have been purchased prior that were used as gifts. For example, I purchased the 3DS Pokemon Collectors edition for my wife outside of that purchase window. That’s a lot all activated on one day. Not to mention all the prior 30+ million 3DS units that had yet to have a NNID put on them. A DLC Christmas give would trigger even more activations..

    • InsaneZucchini

Additionally it’s not just due to an install base increase, but also due to a simple mass traffic jam apparently? Pokemon Bank was released in Japan on Christmas, they’ve had to take it off their eShop and postpone the service. So that may part of the issue? Pokemon Bank was also supposed to release in North America and Europe tomorrow, but that’s sure to be postponed as well.

      • Donaald

I doubt it has anything to do with pokebank, it was only in Japan and when they removed it the issue persisted. Plus, the blackout was worldwide and each region has it’s own server.

  • Mithiragi

Hopefully this will be resolved by Dec. 31st so I can download DR.LUIGI!

  • NintenScience

  • Fred
  • Madmagican

Well if their Twitter’s to be trusted then this should all be over in a few hours… or days
I guess this would be the first time this has ever happened to Nintendo really
Good luck to all you trying to download stuff!

  • Get on top of this Nintendo… So glad we all opted to give my niece Carts for her new 3ds xl this xmas. Would have been a shame if she was stuck playing just the pre installed ar games. Hope that not many kids ended up being stuck with useless Windwaker bundles.

They should have given out advise to download stuff before xmas if they thought they might have problems. Only a fraction might have got the message but it would have helped spread the load.

    • Samba

Our family has one of those “useless” bundles. Error codes for over 36 hours at our house. Thank the gods for Wii party bundle with mote. At least the little ones had something to play.

  • DOLBYdigital

I’ve heard from some others that downloading the update was very challenging as well due to overloads. While it’s good to hear many bought the WiiU, that isn’t a great first experience… They need to start ramping up their online servers/services as more and more people get Nintendo accounts etc… Don’t drop the ball on this just as a huge influx of gamers are coming in

  • Sam

    This is a good thing.

  • Graeme Lynch

Now Nintendo if you just have a little “We are so sorry sale” on the eShop I would forgive you πŸ™‚

  • Kinhas

Just give us more VC games to Play!
yoshis Island, im dying to play that game! And while were at it, add starfox as well!

  • Jayden

I’m always getting error codes on my Wii U, it’s always a 50% chance that I can access Miiverse and the eShop.

    • That’s bad. I almost never have any connection issues. I wasn’t aware that it’s a problem for some.

  • Shy Guy

Anxious to buy NES Remix and Pure Chess, on the one hand I’m glad this is happening because it means demand is so high it just might rip a hole in the fabric of reality allowing the mushroom kingdom to enter the physical world, but on the other hand this chess game really looks nice and I like what co-founder of Ripstone Phil Gaskell had to say about EA snubbing the Wii U (and further proof AAA developers better watch themselves, theirs an indie developer born every minute more than willing to step up and provide what many AAA developers either can’t or won’t).

  • Bob Charlie

The only game featuring Charlie releases on the VC and Charlie can’t even download it.
Isn’t that ironic, don’t ‘cha think?

  • lilmc01

Trying to get back onto the Nintendo Network.

  • Cahone

lol. I go ta ps4. Never again Wii U.

    • tronic307

      Why not both?

  • Sort of working now. About time.

  • majora :D

Anyone know why we are not getting any news at all about X? Pic unrelated

    • greengecko007

      Fake, ok.

      • majora :D

        Dude, it’s a fake twitter

        • greengecko007

That would be good to know before hand. Still, he has slung mud at Sony and Microsoft unnecessarily before in the past, which is what actually makes it believable.

          • [000]

You do know there are countless fake imposters of him on the web, right?

          • greengecko007

Of course. What I don’t know is what his actual twitter is, and it actually seemed like something he would say.

          • majora :D

            He doesn’t have a Twitter

    • [000]

Wait, is that real? There’s no way…

      • majora :D

nope, it isn’t, still funny though

        • [000]

          I should make my own………………………………………..

  • Richard Branches

Can somebody tell me how much is new super mario bros U on the US eshop?

    • 60 + tax

      • Richard Branches

        $60 + taxes? thank you!

  • C.S. Bailey

Once I did a bit more research after my pro-Wii U comment yesterday, I found out it was probably 3DS/2DS users causing the delays. Some site claimed it was the Pokemon Bank that was released in Japan.

  • LoBo_UK

    Its working again .

  • Daniel Gonzalez

It happens. No service is perfect.

  • hikkerd

btw, also regarding nintendo’s online services but a little bit off topic, now my nnid is connected between 3ds and wii u, do i get premium points for downloading software on my 3ds too?

    • No. I believe it’s just for deluxe version of the wii U.

  • discuss

It hasn’t been working for days for me. And I’ve tried a lot ….

    *edit* it finally works

  • Googs

So this is the future of gaming?

    • Christopher Acuna

Just the future of digital gaming.

  • Christopher Acuna

Does anyone know of anyway I can get my old downloads on my new 3dsXL? I had one earlier this year but had to sell it cause I was in a bind. I had like 5 or 6 eShop downloads on the system.

  • John Madsen

Wow what kind of moron purchases a single server for the eshop to run millions of consoles really nintendo you could have done a lot better

  • I heard many have issues but luckily for me I had no problems at all yet. Good luck to those who have problems.
