Before we went into E3 this year we knew Retro Studios was working on a brand new game. Many of you hoped it would be a new Metroid game, but Retro has decided to revisit the world of Donkey Kong with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. This game sees the return of Dixie Kong from the SNES classic, Donkey Kong 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble.

The level design for Tropical Freeze is all new, unlike the recent 3DS remake of Donkey Kong Country Returns. For fans of Donkey Kong, it’s going to be a real treat. Let us know what you think of the game in the comments below and what you’d like to see from it in future coverage.

I don’t know what engine Retro Studios is using, but it looks incredibly epic, breathtaking, and challenging!

That only makes me wish harder that they would have unveiled a new Metroid. I’m still going to pick this game up for sure though, of course.

      • D.M.T

You can bet your ass that Nintendo will release a Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero game on Wii U. F-Zero needs to be in HD

        • Metroid33slayer

when mariokart 8 is finished why can’t the studio behind mariokart 8 make an f-zero game? what do they usually develope in between mariokart games?

    • *Anti troll comment below*
I think they use Frostbite 3 Engine. But trolls would say WiiU can’t run Frostbite 3, yet this looks similair or better then Frostbite 3.
Honestly, no idea what engine they use but they probably developed a brand new engine.

Quite some interesting insight from a space bounty hunter.

whats how challenging got to do with engines

      • uPadWatcher

Don’t underestimate the development team, skeeza.

    DK! Donkey Kong!

  • Assassinated23

The graphics and the camera are the only new things I hear about this game, aside from the as yet unplayable Dixie. Besides these two things, is there any reason this could not have been on the Wii?

    • $39063977

graphics/animations and length obviously. there isn’t much AI in these games so those are the main ingredients.

    • Well if you just take a closer look at the directors interview posted last week about this game they explain why it couldn’t be on Wii, not litteraly explain it, but give examples of new things they could never do before. The fur on Donkey looks incredible, I don’t know how they use that after swim events though, but there are some great possibilities and I hope they use them well 🙂

    • Pikachief

Well I guess if you reduce the graphics and camera enough it could’ve been on the Super Nintendo.

    • brian murphy

Kiddy Kong might be on there too not sure but i was told there was another character but nintendo wouldnt say who it was might be an all new character all together

  • Edward

I’m picking this up day 1. I was a little disappointed that it wasn’t Metroid but I’m not going to be salty and not pick up an amazing game in Donkey Kong. It looks fun and the graphics look amazing can’t wait to play it. Hopefully Retro starts on Metroid next and it becomes a classic game like the Metroid Prime trilogy.

    • NkoSekirei

i think retro still wanted to test the wii u s out before working on a metroid game which i hope we get one by next year

  • D.M.T

Slow news day today 🙁 but thanks for these off-screen gameplay footage. The games look AMAZING. I’m happy that Donkey Kong and Zelda are coming this year and not next year like Bayonetta 2 🙁

  • $39063977

overall a worthie game to have in a collection. i will personally enjoy it, even though i’d have been much happier with a metroid. not a system seller by any means, but good fun for us veterans.

  • Zombie_Andrew

You know what? I’m over my anger, the game looks genuinely great

  • Linskarmo

Looks great. I still want Metroid, but this looks like it could be awesome too.

  • Jon

wii be getting this for sure, got to try it at Best Buy and it was awesome (though I totally blew at the game XD)

  • Justin Carlson

How about use a similar game engine for a new Metroid? It could be more like Super Metroid than Prime. Prime was great, but a new 2D/3D Metroid could also be great considering that Super Metroid is one of the greatest games ever.

    • NkoSekirei

lets hope retro starts working on a new metroid game after donkey kong tropical freezes is out

  • pandaman27

This game is still my biggest first world problem to date.

  • Mochlum

So excited for this game. I love Donkey Kong Country, and this game looks AMAZING in HD.

  • Agent721

It looks cool..haha! What I what to know is if theyve made it easier..ie… more fun to play. I loved them on the SNES, but the Wii version was too Damn hard

    • Kaihaku

From what I saw of the demo at a Nintendo e3 Experience, Tropical Freeze is even more challenging than the Wii version of Donkey Kong Country Returns. However, the 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns did have an easy mode added so maybe this one will get one as well?

  • Agent721

Honestly, can’t you prevent one giant comment from dominating the entire connect section, especially one that could be used on 75% of existing games!!

    • everyone

Troll nation strikes again. Best to just downvote it.

      • TaintedXGamer

        Downvote to Oblivion

  • Norfair20X5

I am SO excited about this! This is my personal game of E3. DKCR blew my freakin’ mind when I first saw it and reblew my mind after playing it.

  • Clel

    It’s ON like DONKEY KONG!

  • Aaron Barton

This game…calls out to the Nintendo purist in everyone. We…must…own it…

  • get a grip fanboys

Donky kong wii sold 6 million then ad the 3ds version sales big big numbers what else did u expect

  • Kaihaku

I was disappointed that this was Retro’s mystery game but a couple of things have turned me around. First was seeing this demo played at a Nintendo e3 Experience, it was by far the most challenging of the four demos and it was the only one that had players quitting before their time ran out. Second was hearing that this was the game that Retro chose to make… I can’t say how much I appreciate that Nintendo gave them that artistic freedom even if it resulted in a different game than what I’d been hoping for.

  • iceazeama

why does every person that plays games to show them off fucking suck!!!!!!!!!!

  • Adecentboy777

I think Wii U is the best social console ever, finally I can play with my friends Donkey Kong in coop, AWESOME 🙂 For the real hardcore single player games I will have my PS4 😉

  • Dajante .

    It looks incredible!

  • Personwhoisaguy

Call it blasphemy, but I for one am glad Retro didn’t go with another Metroid. Seriously, what could they do to blow our minds after the already (damn near) perfect Metroid Prime: Corruption? At least they’ll have a chance at besting our expectations with this one. Plus, who wants to play a game that its designers had no interest in making? Whatever game peaks the interest of a great developer in turn interests me. If Retro was excited to make a new Donkey Kong, I’m excited to play it.
