Dragon Quest X Wii U

For those of you interested in the Dragon Quest X MMO recently released in Japan, we’ve got some good news for you. Series producer Yosuke Saito has said that the game could see release in the West, with slight alterations in order to suit markets in North America, Europe and Australia. Saito also said if a Western release were to be viable, each of these specific regions would have its own version of the game, including separate servers.

The bad news is talk of releasing Dragon Quest X in Western markets was almost exclusively chained to a PC release, with absolutely no mention of the Wii U.

”Of course, however, as for whether it’ll be run in the Dragon Quest style in the overseas market, every nation has its own play style and sensibilities, so I don’t think it’ll be a single game worldwide like with Final Fantasy 11.”

The success of the MMO style game in Japan, as well as Western interest in the game are likely the determining factors of whether we’ll see Dragon Quest X hop the ocean. What do you think? If the game were made available on the Wii U in your region, would you play it? You can check out the trailer below to see some gameplay, but of course everything is in Japanese.

  • DQ9 was the game that made me believe in turn-based RPGs again. I want this game!

    • Ducked

      Same here

    • Adrian

I loved Dragon Quest 8. Never played 9 though. I also loved Dragon Warrior 1 🙂 haha.

  • Ducked

It was like a slap across a face when I saw “not on Wii U”. I seriously love these games!

But Fire Emblem will always be my favorite classic JRPG

  • Chris Aita

No Wii U release in North America, no sale.

    • Your money

Dammit!! this could have been Nintendos chance to increase Wii u sales. What a wasted opportunity.

      • Farad Hassan

Exactly. They don’t want to win it seems. And this makes me sad. Every game should be available to every gamer. I really hope they turn things around.

  • Srpg2ishere

PC? My pc is crap. Would’ve been awesome to play on Wii U. Oh well..

    • Leorio

Yep I can barely run browsers on mine.. xD Need it on the Wii U. :/

      • kevin nun—-

the after effects of too much porn

        • Saleh Sbeiti

Hey, what can I say? I love being entertained.

  • Archiq09

why not wii u for west if japan has on wii u????????

    • Adrian

Probably because they don’t believe the attach rate for this game is worth it given the how little of the western population owns a Wii U. That’s my guess anyways. Usually everything just boils down to $$$$$$$.

    • greengecko007

To put things into perspective, Japan made up over 75% of the total sales for Dragon Quest 9.

  • Michael Jurado

this is bull shit >__< i've been looking forward to this games american release and now we may not even get it …. some one better fix this ASAP

  • Kamon

I won’t buy this if it’s not on Wii U. My PC sucks. :

  • Bobaganoosh

Not a big fan of mmos, but this one has appeal. With talk of this one being on wii and wii u from the beginning this is both surprising and disappointing.

  • greengecko007

In all honesty, the Wii U is the only place where this game even has a chance in western countries. There are plenty of other, and better, MMO RPGS for PCs and future consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One. This game has nothing on The Elder Scrolls Online or Final Fantasy 14, as well as the plethora of other MMOs already out there. If it was on the Wii U, it would at least have a niche audience.

    • Adrian

I would prefer this game over ESO or FFXIV for PC.

      • Laud

Aside from you there isn’t really an audience.

I would only buy it if it was on the Wii U.

        • Adrian

I would only buy it if there was no monthly charge :p. Doesn’t matter if it’s Wii U or PC to me.

    • Adrian

And aside from that, your argument is incorrect, more people have a PC to game on than a Wii U currently.

      • greengecko007

There are also A LOT more MMO RPGs on the PC that this would have to compete with. There’s also the fact that the other Dragon Quest games have not been very popular outside of Japan. I’m not saying this game would sell well if it was released for the Wii U, I’m just saying it would at least have a chance. Only a minority group of PC gamers, like yourself (not meant to be offensive) would pick this over the already huge library of MMO RPGs on the PC as well as ESO and FFXIV.

        • Adrian

Possibly, but Dragon Quest/ Dragon Warrior is such a well established series that it has the potential to attract a decent audience on PC. I don’t know exactly what would happen were this released over here, but I do believe it would have a better chance living on PC than on the WiiU (until the WiiU sales improve considerable).

          • greengecko007

It sells terribly outside of Japan. It could sell better though if it targeted Wii U owners that are looking for any kind of decent game at the moment.

          • kahn

Eh, idk. Theres probably no advertisements for it, so theres no way it would stand a chance against big MMO’s on PC. It would be like Sega trying to release a new console with ninty, Playstation, and Xbox already here

      • kahn

No man, hes saying the competition of BETTER and already oversaturated amounts of MMO’s on PC’s will kill its sales. Who would buy this game over ESO? Or WoW or something. The Wii U isnt over saturated with MMO’s so it wont have any competition, stand out more, and have a niche audience. Whether people have more PC’s or not is irrelevent.

    • Levi Johansen

I agree, the Wii U is the most logical platform.

But the Wii U sales have been slow, so I understand their concern. The Wii U will sell very well this fall when 1st party games are released, and all the devs and publishers that have been holding back games for the Wii U will reconsider. The Wii U is in no real danger.

  • Adrian

Hmm, while the WiiU would excel at a traditional RPG with use of the gamepad, I can’t complain about a PC release, as I just built a pimpmazing computer :).
Unfortunately, I’m not into P2P schemes. I like to spend my money once and be done. Also, I need a story that has an actual ending, and if this turned into an MMO, the ending might be stupid or just not exist :(.

  • Leorio

What dumbasses they are.. “derp great game, people want it.. let’s limit it.. IF we bring it to them.”… If I don’t get it on a Wii U I will not buy it.

  • Antar Rodríguez

yet another game skipping wii U at least on our region, im getting tired of this, and all the negativity to this great console

  • TrueWiiMaster

If it came to the Wii U, I’d play it. How long would depend on the subscription fee, if it had one. If it doesn’t come to the Wii U, I’m not interested.

  • david jarman

This world has gone mad!!!! Put it on a nintendo console where it belongs!!!

  • Michael Jurado

This doesn’t even make sense as far as i know its already out in japan so wouldn’t they just need to translate the stuff to English (which they’ll do for other consoles anyway) I mean yes the online of a company who’s been online for nearly 10 years now is greater than someone who just joined the online community but, the GAME IS ALREADY ON THE SYSTEM!!! I would understand if it released on ps3 and it was making its way across seas to america but its not it literally released on the wii u as in it’s already fucking on it -_- why the hell wouldn’t you bring it to america on the console its already on but bring it too its competitors >_< that makes no fucking sense @_@

  • TaintedXGamer

I buy it on Wii U in a heartbeat.

  • fireheartis1

This would be the only MMO I’ve ever touched it comes to the Wii U. I’ve never been interested in MMOs, but this one looks freaking awesome.

  • Agent721

Ill settle for the original dragon warriors on the E shop….

  • wober2

    Oh nintendo!

    • wober2

I think nintendo should be spending some of its money on 3rd party devs to release these games on wiiu. So far it just seems like nintendo might ask them but provides no other incentive.

    • DemonRoach

This is the sole reason I bought a Wii U.

  • e_rocket

I guess It could be good in the wii U, if it is true that Wii U needs more games, then it should be a good market for the ones that decide to use that platform… I think that Nintendo will eventually start selling more units…

  • DemonRoach

Time to take back my worthless crap u.

  • $41809923

maybe i have to think about

  • Madmagican

Dragon Quest is basically a Nintendo franchise (it’s never really ventured away from the platforms)
Non-Wii U release is a rather poor choice in that regard; Anyone wanna start up a petition to bring DQ10 to Wii U in western releases?

    • Nolan ArchLord

Except for Dragon Quest 7, 8 and the other remakes on Sony consoles…

      • Madmagican

Yeah, but my point is that outside of Dragon Quest 7&8, the DQ series has never been on a platform other than Nintendo systems
I’m not counting remakes but if I were, the only game in the series to not be published on a nintendo system is DQ8

  • Dez

What does it matter? It bombed in Japan already at least on the Wii U there. Mostly this is probably due to the fact it wasn’t anything new at all. Final Fantasy MMOs are also stupid, I’d rather watch paint dry than play another crappy Square game. Square is all about the pretty and mobile games these days, they completely ruined the FF formula a decade ago right after its creator left.

Also, I find it funny how people keep thinking the X-bone is going to do well. At $500 with a camera that is watching you even when it is turned off, that thing isn’t going to be sell much except to people who have too much money and like being spied on by Microsoft and the NSA. It doesn’t even have any games that stick out, plus it is basically a Tivo box with so much anti-consumer bullshit about it. The fact is, they tried to screw over people, they just reduced the degree to which they wish to screw you because of the backlash. Micro$oft already won last place this gen.

But, yeah, this MMO is not going to compete with western MMOs. It’ll get pulverized by MMO giants, it isn’t even worth investing in bringing this elsewhere. But this is what you should expect from Square Enix.

    • greengecko007

You lost all credibility when you started talking about the Xbox One spying on you. If you actually knew anything about the NSA, you would know how many objects you already own that are capable of being used by the NSA at any point in time, without your knowledge. And of course, there is always the extra bit of information that the government doesn’t tell you. If you think they are literally watching you, then again, you don’t know anything about how the NSA obtains data on potential threats. Do yourself a favor and don’t believe all of the anti government BS you read on the internet.

  • Ace J

pc only and may not come to wii u in the west?? damn and i really wanted to give them my money too…

  • Geek_Daddy

I’d probably buy it for Wii U, but I dont think i would play it as a PC game

  • Nolan ArchLord

No Wii U release? Not buying it.

  • Elem187

Interesting. They already have the game running on a Wii U, so there would be no costs to port it. The only costs would be localization…. Pretty sure Nintendo might be willing to handle localizations.
By bring it to PC they would have to spend money on porting it to an x86 platform.

  • Andrew W Garttmeyer

No interest in ANY MMOs. Was addicted to WoW for quite some time, left, came back, left, came back, left and have NO intentions what so ever of getting into another MMO.

    • Andrew W Garttmeyer

Just do not have the time, plus there are SO many games that I want to play as is.

  • This is just an indication of a bad game design for dragon quest and declining video game sales.

  • Kaihaku

From I to IX, I’ve purchased every Dragon Warrior/Quest game. Some of them multiple times. The fact that this was an MMORPG was enough to give me pause…but I decided to give it a try anyway. But if this is only released in North America on the PC, I won’t buy it. Sigh, Square Enix… Why couldn’t you just call this Dragon Quest Online? It seems cosmetic but it means something to introduce a drastically different game as a numbered entry in a series.

  • Spike Ashford

No Wii U version in Europe? Well my money will be going elsewhere.

  • J.C. Cordeiro

After playing DQ games since its first title, playing this game was the only reason why i bought a Wii, and later a Wii U. Nintendo is really ignoring the RPG and DQ niche outside Japan. We buy its main console, Wii U, and we have to play DQ games on 3DS, just because there are far more sold 3DS’s than Wii U’s units. Well, DQ X will probably have a 3DS version soon, while we can use our dusty Wii U console to play virtual console games, considering the amount of new Wii U titles currently, specially RPGs.

If you want to help, there are some petitions to bring DQ X to wii U in Change.org.

We don’t want to play only Mario and Zelda games, I guess Nintendo should understand that by now, if they want to increase sells.
