If the release of Dr. Luigi late last year didn’t sate your need for dropping multi-colored pills on devilish looking viruses, then you’ll be happy to know that the original NES version of Dr. Mario is coming to the Wii U virtual console sometime in the near future. The game received a listing on Nintendo’s UK website, so it’s possible only Europe will see Dr. Mario while the rest of the world waits.

I don’t know about you, but I immediately get the frantic music stuck in my head any time someone mentions the game.

Aside from some minor nostalgia for the classic presentation, I can’t think of a reason why anyone would want to play this on the virtual console over Dr. Luigi. I guess if someone really hates green?

    • Some people have an affinity for the old chiptune music. I know I prefer it.

      • manowaffles

That should have been an option in Dr. Luigi. But there are a lot of things I expected in Dr. Luigi that were not included.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, thats me you are talking about there. I would get dr. Mario over dr. Luigi in a heartbeat. 😀

  • Dr Nick Riviera

    Hi Everybody!

    Why don’t I have my own game…

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

      Hi Doctor Nick !

    • manowaffles

Hey, you’re pretty good. Did you go to Hollywood Upstairs Medical College too?

  • abe

If you have Dr Luigi you get Dr Mario free when it gets released

  • But… The N64 version is awesome~! I want N64 games too >.< (I still have all my N64 games, including Dr. Mario~ :3)

  • Richard Branches

Nintendo please!! release the eshop in latinoamerica!! 🙁

  • Ducked

    Wow, I’m so hyped! (sarcasm)

Can’t Nintendo come out with more Nes and Snes games we actually care about? What happened to the NDS virtual console? No more news on it. The N64 and GBA VC?

    • Yen

It’s only been like two weeks since they announced to investors that NDS virtual console is a possibility and that tells you that you should have it already?

      • Magnus Eriksson

so… n64 and gba. what lieful excuses do you have for that?

        • Yen

First of all, I never said anything for the N64 and GBA VC, I think it’s weird that those are taking so long as well. I only commented on the NDS because it was only recently announced. Second, technically, “later time” does not specify when, so they didn’t lie when they said it’ll come later. If it never comes out or is announced to be scraped, then it would be a lie.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Im looking forward to a future Nintendo Direct where Iwata says:
“-In early 2013 we launched Virtual Console on Wii U, back then I promised to bring Nintendo 64 and Gameboy Advanced to Virtual Console at a later time… -I lied!”

      • Ducked

I’m also waiting for Iwata to say “Remember when I said Yarn Yoshi was coming to the Wii U, I lied about that too!”

  • Magnus Eriksson

Good. But goddammitt releases on Wii U Virtual Console are sloooooow… More than one year ago Iwata announced N64 and GBA games would be launched on the system. Heard nothing about that since then. Well, we heard about GBA games, but when will those come? 2015?

    • Ducked

By 2015 Nintendo and Microsoft would have already made a new gaming console called the “Wii Done”

      • manowaffles

Microsoft may eventually drop out of video games, but NIntendo never would. It’s just like the Gamecube years. Nintendo will soldier on, and if you are patient, they will provide some of the best and most memorable games this generation.

    • manowaffles

Yeah, this one a week B.S. has to stop. Back from 2006 on the Wii’s VC was getting between 2-5 VC games per week! Sure it slowed down around 2011, but that was only because…I really don’t know because there are still games unreleased on it.

Hopefully we will see some other systems soon too. Japan already has 2 PC-Engine (TurboGrafx 16) games & 2 MSX games.

I wouldn’t mind a slow trickle, if it was after they huge backlog available on the Wii’s VC was already available.

  • Magnus Eriksson

“-In early 2013 we launched Virtual Console on Wii U, back then I promised to bring Nintendo 64 and Gameboy Advanced to Virtual Console at a later time… -I lied!” (Iwata, upcoming Nintendo Direct 2014)

  • Simon Stevens

Who wants to bet they’ll overcharge?, I love Dr Luigi, play it every morning yet 13 quid fiddy is a bit of a rip to be honest, Nintendo need to get real with there pricing

    • C4

It should be free for owners of Dr. Luigi in my opinion.

Plus that would make me buy Dr. Luigi!

      • blindtiger

        heard that might actually happen

  • Skelterz

Why Dr mario and not fucking N64 games like Goemon or biofreaks or something im getting sick of this horseshit.

  • Sdudyoy

No offense, but why would you get this if you already have Doctor Luigi?

    • manowaffles

Many people (myself included) scoffed at the price of Dr. Luigi. I personally was not going to pay $15 for a game that is inferior to it’s $10 Wii counterpart “Dr. Mario Online Rx.” I won’t pay $5 dollars for this either though, but someone might.

    • blindtiger

i read somewhere dr luigi owners will get dr mario for free

  • LJay

Why release this?? I get the nostalgia thing but surely the luigi one is waay better and they should get on with making/porting something else!? *rolls eyes*

    • manowaffles

The Luigi one is also 3x more expensive. This is a bone thrown to those Wii U owners who saw the price of Dr. Luigi and scoffed. The week Dr. L released, Miiverse was full of people complaining about the price (me included).

Personally I’ll keep booting up Wii mode and play Dr. Mario Online Rx. It was $10 & included more modes than Dr. Luigi.

  • Denvy

Dr. Mario is decent, but not something I’d be willing to buy on the VC.

  • manowaffles

I would have gotten Dr. Luigi if it was one of 2 things.

1# Everything included in Dr. Mario Online Rx for Wii with even more content options besides just L pills.

2# The existing Dr. Luigi software was discounted for owners of Dr. Mario Online Rx.

As it stands, if I need a Dr. Mario fix, I’ll play Dr. Mario Online Rx.
