Today Nintendo released a brand new trailer for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, showing off new environments, including several levels featuring the infamous minecarts in the series. Dixie Kong also makes an appearance alongside Donkey Kong, showing off her signature helicopter ponytail move.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was recently delayed until February, but it looks like Retro Studios is going to take this time to make this the best Donkey Kong Country release yet. What do you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Interesting that it shows the Wiimote and nunchuk as the controls for DK, and not the gamepad.

    • Stuart Thomas

      Please not another shake fest!

      • Nintedward

If you’re gunna include shake to roll, at least give us the option to press a button to roll.

        • Anthony Franqui

I think it’s pretty obvious that they will considering they did that for Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D.

          • Διονύς84

they did that only because 3DS doesn’t have motion controls

          • NintendoMan

It does, actually. But shaking the 3DS with all the dynamic action Donkey Kong Country Returns has doesn’t make it a very good idea.

          • Anthony Franqui
      • FoxMulder900

I never understood the problem with shaking to roll, it worked just fine and kept you on your toes lol

        • Nintedward

There is just no point in shaking to roll when a button press is 100% litteraly quicker and way more responsive.
I love Motion controls a la Skyward sword,Wii sports etc. But in a hectic and difficult platformer like DKC buttons>>>>Motion controls.

          • FoxMulder900

I see your point, its similar to the idea that you can’t be competitive in Mario Kart using the steering wheel setup, but it is arguably more fun.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Unless you play Mario Kart 64 of course 😉

          • Magnus Eriksson

Agree, MC does not have anything in games like this to do. It should be reserved for FPS, Zelda, etc. Hope they make it work wit the pad. This is typical games that works on Off-TV. But, it will be a great game anyways.

          • Nintedward

They can by all means add them as a secondary option for kids or an alternative way to control.
Motion controls aren’t a gimmick, but they can be when they’re tacked on for no reason.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Its not a gimmick, thats excactly why it shouldnt be on games like this (actually it was quite cool in NSMBWii), but reserved for games that it fit for. I think it was cool as hell in Skyward Sword. I really hope thell keep that formula in next game.

          • TheKnutMan

You’re aboslutely right that it is quicker and easier. However, I’ve played a lot of platformers and they often feel the same to me. Now I don’t think controls should be challenging, but the whole act of having to move certainly takes me deeper into the gaming experience.
At firs I was really pissed of about the shake to roll thing and not being able to press the Y button to run like on the SNES. I complained a lot about the first DKCR game, but later on when I got used to it, I really had a lot of fun playing it with my brother. I don’t think I ever laughed that much playing a video game.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

The shake to roll was decent, but it was a bit off when I played Returns. Other than that, the game was great.

          • BIG Franky

as long as I can play with a sideways wiimote, like i can in SMBU (or in the original version on the wii), then I’m good.

      • Jump’nShootMan

It seems like Nintendo’s trying to develop things that’ll work with the pro controller when they can (e.g. adding support for it to New SMB) so I would think there will be a button press option

      • Javy G

I’m sure they will include the ProController as a playable option. Given they use the GamePads controls which are similar to the Pro without the touchscreen.

      • Michael Ocampo

But I like the shake fests 🙁

    • Elitepwnsface

Pretty much turns me away from this game. Really want a true controller/gamepad experience here. Don’t want to have to use the motion controls.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        True story.

      • not trying to come off as rude, but did you not like pikmin because of this?

        • Elitepwnsface

You hit it right on the head. I actually only ended up playing the first 2 days.

          • ChubbiestLamb6

Really? You didn’t think the wiimote control scheme for Pikmin was the most intuitive thing ever? It’s seriously an absolutely perfect controller for that game, and the gamepad scheme was waayyy more difficult to use effectively.

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

same here, for the same reason.

          • I actually didn’t mind the motion controls, but I see exactly where you’re coming from

    • A SNES Day Off

Not really. You can ‘punch’ the boss with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, but you can’t slam a Game Pad over his head!

      • you can shake the gamepad, but that seems tedious

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Thought the same thing.

  • Nookling

Cool but hopefully we get the fourth character revealed soon. Kiddie Kong, King K, or someone new? (My choices but not only options I guess)

    • crocodileman94

Probably Kiddy Kong, then we’ll have the original DKC cast. And i guess he’ll have DK’s abilities too, since they’re very similar in body size.

    • ChubbiestLamb6

yeah I’m with @crocodileman94:disqus on this one. As far as I see it, there is literally no other option than Kiddy Kong, since it is Donkey Kong COUNTRY Returns, after all, and Kiddy Kong is the fourth character you can play as in the original trilogy.

    • Wiiluigi

I was kinda hoping for Chunky Kong. You never know. Maybe this was the last minute change in development and what pushed all this back to February. I understand to keep it in the DKC cast but that DK64 cast was awesome! Still hoping!

    • Διονύς84

Kiddy is horrible. Funky and Cranky are better options, K.Rool is impossible, Retro hates crocs

  • Niknique

This game looks awsome! Too bad it got delayed 🙁

  • Louie

    This looks so good…
Makes the wait for February feel like a long time but the wait will be worth it.

  • Fred

why did they feel the need to release the trailer today with the game’s recent delay?

    • Derian D’Intino

Well the sooner the better to compensate for the delay, hence is why they should’ve released this trailer in that very N direct.

  • prettypinkpanacea

Hmm. This looks pretty good. I wonder if I should buy.

  • Ducked

This game better have Pro controller support. Btw, love the return of Dixie Kong

    • Διονύς84

if SM3DW does, this will too

      • Ducked

SM3DW does, but that doesn’t mean this will. NSMBU didn’t have Pro controller support.

  • Nintendofreak

might actually buy it i skipped on the wii one, but might get this one after watchdogs

  • Jack5221

Looks like a lot of fun. Its a shame we wont be able to pick it up this year, but then again… “A delayed game is eventually good, while a bad game is bad forever” – Miyamoto.

  • Zuxs13

    meh.. next.

  • Leo

I wish they would drop off this cartoon vibe and get back to the original art style and music from the SNES series. DKC 1, 2 and 3 had so much emotion and still were very funny in their own way. This new DKC simply doesn’t have any of that, its just a cheap cartoon.

    • Fred

Are you kidding the Wii one was awesome and this one looks even better

      • Leo

        I beg to differ.

        • Fred

That’s the beauty of the current industry. There’s plenty of video games of all tastes so that almost everyone can find they kind of games they want. I loved DKCR and I’m confident I’ll enjoy DKCTF. You on the other hand enjoy something different.

    • Shota

one suprise for you. the composer of the original DKC is making the music for this game.

      • Leo

THIS is the only thing that still gives me hope!

        • Shota

          glad your happy ,pal

    • Shigeru Miyamoto

i agree! this trailer does NOT impress me … it looks weak. i don’t see anything different from the last game with the exception of adding dixi.. man what a rehash.

    • Jacob D. Taylor

K I have to agree with you in almost every way. I LOVE the gameplay, but DKC was what it was in part because it was extremely pretty in regards to great graphics. Unfortunately anything Nintendo owned outside of Metroid (until other M) and Twilight Princess and Smash Bros Brawl is primary colors only. Just because primary colors doesn’t mean you should use them. I think DKC was great because of the deep tone of the game. It was dark, it was serious. This one is slap stick.

  • linxz

this better NOT be a wiimote/nunchuk game!

  • RyuNoHadouken

Mario Kong…move along…nothing new and exciting to see here…smh

    • Michael Jurado

go back to playing call of duty

      • RyuNoHadouken

i play stuff like Castlevania, Ultima, Agarest, Metal Gear, etc

  • East_Watch

Guys check out the new gameplay footage especially the on rails one! Not to mention you can hear a sneak peak at David Wise new music!

  • AM Real

What happens if you beat the boss using the Gamepad?

  • Is_Mort

Do we really need another sidescrolling platformer for this system?

More than we need more hate flooding the internet. Come back when you care enough to have an avatar.

    • Clel

Wow! You have a control key, a v key, and a c key!

    • Michael Jurado

oh i know you aren’t bitching about a platformer when there are like 1000 FPS games

  • Andrew

oh no the rocket brarrle levels have returned 🙁

  • Merrfn

Gah, I would prefer metroid but bring it on!

  • bakedapplepie

I definitely want this, but I hope that you can use the gamepad and/or pro controller.

    • I am Error.

Agreed, sometimes the Pro Controller is just more comfy, especially for long periods of time.

  • Suraj Alexander
  • Hulkamania

Hey Ashley… the Art Academy community seems pretty strong on Wii U. You should do a daily or weekly special on this site showing off some of the cool stuff that people draw on the Wii U using Art Academy… some of the stuff is amazing,

  • val berger

I wish they would just use a real jazzsoundtrack for once. I just can’t stand those MIDI sounds anymore. At least it looks great

  • Theiz Zzee

Looks good to me especially the cart part.

  • devmiles

what a super big shame that this title has been postponed, aside from that i don’t see so much of innovation … this looks like 3ds DK but improved and in 1080

  • Seth S. Scott

CANT WAIT. Ever since SNES DK has been possibly the best platforming series in sheer challenge and replayability.

  • Richard Collard

Sorry Rare, but you have been REPLACED. Hopefully, we can get the DKC Trilogy for SNES back on Virtual Console and Eshop, as Nintendo owns the IP for Donkey Kong.

  • diqus sucks

I cant wait for this game to be done so they can consider working on a Metroid lol

  • leo

    still want my hd metroid…..

  • WiiU4life

Excited for this game but in all honesty… The greatness of Rayman Lengends stole Donkey Kong’s TF thunder for md.

  • Linskarmo

It looks awesome, and I’ll probably get it day one. I really hope they’ll make a Metroid game after this, though. That could be incredible!
