I must admit that, like many others, I wasn’t too excited about the announcement of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze at E3 last year. With word that Retro Studios was working on another game for Nintendo, I was pulling for a new Metroid game. With their last game also being an entry in the Donkey Kong Country series, I was worried we were getting another one too soon. Now that I’ve played through the game, I’m glad this decision was made. Check out the video below for my full review. Overview In Tropical Freeze, the DK crew’s island paradise is overrun by viking invaders, and it’s up to Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and for the first time, Cranky Kong, to take back their home. Each Kong has unique abilities that will help players navigate various platforming challenges, and uncover the game’s bevy of secrets and collectibles. Gameplay Donkey Kong is the default character with no discernible special abilities. Diddy can use his jet-pack to hover, Dixie can spin her hair like a propeller to give jumps a little boost, and Cranky can use his cane as a Pogo stick much in the vein of DuckTales, allowing him to bounce on typically hazardous areas. All the other Kongs can ride on Donkey Kong’s back in single player, permitting players going solo to utilize these various skills. In multiplayer, the characters obviously control separately, but player two can still jump on Donkey Kong’s back at any time to make getting through certain obstacles less troublesome. Tropical Freeze is a classic Donkey Kong Country game in every sense. The series has always been about pacing. Players must be able to identify when to move quickly and when to take the time to assess the next obstacle. The game’s standard platforming levels often give players a moment to breath between difficult sections, while the fast paced rocket barrel, Rambi the Rhino, and infamous mine cart levels are non-stop thrill rides almost certain to result in sweaty palms. This game hearkens back to the days of classic platformers not just because of its 2D side-scrolling gameplay, but also because of its difficulty. The game often requires pin point precision to successfully move through obstacles without missing your target or taking damage. For this reason, players are likely to find themselves replaying sections multiple times. Again, this level of challenge is nothing new for the series and likely a welcome aspect for old-school platforming fans. If I had to pick one standout aspect in Tropical Freeze’s gameplay experience, I’d have to choose the boss fights. If you found yourself leaving games like Super Mario 3D World wanting more epic boss battles, then you should play the ones in Tropical Freeze. Every boss encounter in the game is a challenge and each requires a different strategy to overcome. The thing I found most fascinating about the bosses in this game was how they all do a great job of lulling the player into a pattern just in time to surprise you with a new attack. If you don’t keep focused throughout the entirety of these battles, you’re likely to get caught off guard. Luckily the game’s controls are tight. So, even though there is a rather high level difficulty, when you under shoot a jump, or run into an enemy, you almost always feel that you’re the one at fault. The only issue I had with the controls was the fact that ground pounding and rolling were mapped to the same button. Your character performs a roll if the button is pressed while moving and does a ground pound while standing still. In a couple of instances I pressed the button wanting to ground pound before I came to a complete stop which resulted in a roll, sometimes off an edge or into an enemy. Given that there are more than enough buttons on the Wii U’s GamePad to map these actions separately, it would have been nice if the game offered that option. Now, all this talk about the game’s difficulty doesn’t mean less skilled players are left to drown in frustration. For those regularly running into trouble, the game offers solace in the form of Funky’s Shop. Here players can spend banana coins collected throughout the game to buy items such as extra lives, hearts, and even free passes from a pitfall deaths. Each item only has a single use, but stocking up on these resources can save players a great deal of time that would have otherwise been spent attempting the same sections over and over. Completionists can also take advantage of the shop by enlisting the help of Squacks the parrot. If you bring Squacks into a level, he will… well squack whenever a you’re near a hidden puzzle piece, making them easier to track down. Visuals/Audio While the gameplay of Tropical Freeze may take players back to their classic platforming days, the art design and soundtrack of the game are executed in the big budget manner akin to the Triple-A titles of today. The shock value of seeing my favorite Nintendo franchises in HD still hasn’t ceased to amaze me. The standout factor in Tropical Freeze is the fine details. From Donkey Kong’s fur to the way snow blows through trees in the background. There’s a sense of realism in this cartoony world that at times took me aback. I was initially worried that the Tropical Freeze theme would result in an over saturation of snow and ice themed levels that would quickly get old, but these levels were used sparingly and designed so well that I actually came away from the game wanting more frozen themed levels. Not to mention each of the game worlds has its own aesthetic feel to constantly shake things up. David Wise, the composer of the original Donkey Kong Country games, returns to create a soundtrack for Tropical Freeze that is nothing short of phenomenal. Each track not only sets the tone of the level, but often the pace. I frequently found myself reacting to the music as a sign of things to come. Aquatic Ambience, the underwater theme from the first Donkey Kong Country game, is one of my favorite video game tracks of all time. Tropical Freeze includes a new version of the track that I’ve been listening to repeatedly since I heard it in the game. It may be early in 2014, but this title is sure to be a contender for best video game soundtrack of the year. Conclusion There really wasn’t much I didn’t like about Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Retro Studios seems to have largely stuck with the formula that made Donkey Kong Country Returns a solid title, while improving on almost every aspect. Some may still think the Wii U doesn’t need more platformers, but, in my opinion, this just cements the console as the go-to destination for fans of this genre. As many Nintendo fans know, there are several major titles slated for release on Wii U this year. If Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a sign of things to come, then the time to own a Wii U is now. Pros + Classic platforming gameplay that stays true to its roots. + Amazing soundtrack and art design + Raises the bar for boss fights in modern platformers Cons – Lack of button mapping options – High difficutly level may turn off new comers Final Score 9/10 Are you currently playing Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze? Petri This is a good game, challenging, and if you die, you know it was you who fucked up. Seth S. Scott Well said John. I couldnt agree more. I wish the buttons were more customizable but that is my only gripe with the game. Music, platforming, difficulty, graphics are all top notch to me. David Trail I love DKC TF as it offers challenge and old school gameplay. Something the PS4 and Xbox One lack. Games with grit and challenge. Go and buy it if you already haven’t got it for your Wii U. I am stuck on the second boss. He is a tough cookie! Ducked I was stuck on that owl for the longest time too! It seems like he has a surprise for everything. David Trail He’s a horrible, horrible owl lol! Ducked lol, I’ve seriously grown a hatred for owls now! David Trail LOL! 00EpicGamer00 Just a little tip to help you with that stupid owl. It’s easier if you have Dixie Kong. Also, remember the more you fight the same boss, the quicker you learn it’s tactics. It took me a few tries to actually overcome this beast as well. As long as you have Dixie, and remember his pattern. you’ll do good. 🙂 To me, the hardest part about him, is when he shoots(?) his feathers across the entire screen! Gentle Robot When he does it in a row, run away and jump in the barrel. You’ll just miss it if you time it right. When he throws them in spread fire, get up close to him, it’s easier to dodge there. lonewolf88 The Owl….. O_O always watching.. Gentle Robot agh fuck that owl. Throwing something’s own progeny at it should do more damage. LukeMM95 Yeah its funny. Sony and Microsoft fanboys always trash Nintendo for making ‘kiddie’ games but games like this at least offer a challenge. Most of the games on PS4 and Xbone could probably be beaten in a weekend. Gentle Robot Not gritty enough! Needs to take place in a ghetto and DK needs to be a cyborg with stubble on his chin. SlicedSandwiches Bought it launch day and I’m only on the World 4 Boss as of today. World 4 is NOT fun if you don’t like swimming in DKC: TF Capt. Smoker That game was enjoyable yet frustratingly hard to the point of launching the gamepad into a concrete wall, me and my little boy played it together which meant less deaths, but we still fought with eachother to determine who was the crap player messing everything up, turns out it was me, old and out of fashion 🙁 David Trail Is this a a review that metacritc recognise? I think the metacritic score for this game should be higher. long_dong_donkey_kong It would be if not for “click-bait” scores like Gamespot. Based on their criticisms, the game is hard and doesn’t do anything new. I haven’t played DKCRTF yet, but I assume both are true. I think most gamers think of a so-so games as something that falls between 7 and 8 out of 10. If Gamespot, gives the game a 7, most people are ok. If Gamespot is the outlier, then the review gets way more page views. David Trail The Game Spot review was a joke. URFTBOUND4LIFE . People need to stop talking about Gamespot’s review. That’s what they want. If we ignore them, maybe they’ll go away… long_dong_donkey_kong If they can survive firing a guy for giving a poor review to an advertiser’s game, they can survive Nintendo fans boycotting their website, which they were probably doing anyway. Outside of Nintendo fan sites, only Kotaku and IGN do a decent job of covering the Big N. URFTBOUND4LIFE . IGN and Kotaku jump on the doom bandwagon as well. They’re just not as bad as Gamespot. They’ll give them high marks on reviews but later make statements that contradicts their reviews. IGN’s NSMB Wii review was quite positive, but they pretty much trashed it when games like Splosive Man and Rayman Origins came out. IGN be on some bullshit sometimes too. David Trail I really like NSMBU and New Luigi Bros U Gentle Robot The gamespot review is fair. The game IS cheap. Half the time if you try to jump from the edge of a platform to the next, you’ll miss. Rambi’s dash was gimped, so you need to dash jump on ever platform in his level in world 2. In world 3 rocket barrel, it’s not enough to find the secret exits, you have to have chosen Cranky for the first one, and Dixie for the second, and there’s no hint in the game that tells you to bring the other sidekick, you just jump around like a jackass trying to get in. The rocket barrel levels are a hell of a lot easier than in the first game though. Each one is a joke compared to that goddamn bat level. It’s a fun game, but it’s far from perfect. David Trail It’s not a 6 out of 10 though. That is for sure. cthreep I bought this the week it was released, but still haven’t touched it. Just clearing out some of my backlog first and then the wife and I will be playin’ us some DK. Captinn2 People are missing out on a lot of exclusive games on Wii U. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Bayonetta 2 The Wonderful 101 X Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Mario Kart 8 Super Mairo 3D World Pikmin 3 New. Super Mario Bros. U New Super Luigi U Nintendo Land ..and many more. People are missing out on Wii U cause they prefer cool graphics over fun games. -_- When I think Microsoft, I think a Windows 8 computer, not a system that plays Windows 7 games. When I think Sony…I’m thinking….appliances and such. -Opinion from a 12-year old. Nintendoplaystation Wii u has cool graphics too, just because psone has more power doesn’t mean wii u’s graphics suck. Mario kart 8 looks better than knack IMO. I agree with your statement though. Captinn2 Besides the PS3, there’s pretty much no other home console game system I want. Xbox 360: Gold membership for nearly everything FTW. Xbox One: Besides Titanfall, I find all the exclusives bleh. And it also has that Gold Membership problem. PS4: The games are bleh, InFamous: SS looks stupid.., Online Play problem again. Pretty much I don’t see the point in paying for Online Play when I’m already paying for the Internet itself. readypembroke PS exclusives are more interesting to me, especially the Sly Cooper series. One reason I finally bought the blue PS3 from GS. Sly 4 is different from the others a little bit but cool. CaptinnDaGameMaster! The only reasons why I want a PS3 are for games like Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, and Little Big Planet. Arthur Jarret Don’t forget to pick up 3D dot game heroes for it, too. Ni no kuni is also the bees knees. I also loved Lollipop chainsaw and platinums games, like Vanquish CaptinnDaGameMaster! Yeah, I’m also planning on those two games(played them at a friends house, so fun). Also, I’m not really interested in M rated games, I just find it somewhat childish to playing M rated games, but that’s just me…HOWEVER, I do want Bayonetta. :3 Sam PSOne? Nintendoplaystation Like ps360 ps4+xboxone = psone Brandon I dont think you should use that, it got me thinking you were comparing the wii u to the ps1. Michał Pasternak Knack dropped FPS well below 30 for me. I have not seen a review mentioning that. Mallavol I am a 23 years old and I think a Wii U games like Donkey Kong CTF, Pikmin 3 or New Super Mario 3D World are one of the best games these days. Unfortenately I don’t have a Wii U I bought a PS4 and I am not happy with it at all. The games have modern graphics, looks very nice but gameplay-wise is something that I played dozens of times on the PS3 and X360. NFS Rivals, Battlefield 4, Killzone Shadow Fall, Call of Duty: Ghosts or Fifa feels like something I already played. Just a pretty graphics is not enough. When I have money I buy a Wii U. MerryBlind . Agreed. I’m 22, and am more than satisfied with the games on Wii U. People say Nintendo is for only for kiddies. Not true at all; Nintendo is for EVERYONE. CaptinnDaGameMaster! People keep calling me a Nintendo fan boy cause my Wii U/3DS wish list has so few third party titles, but that’s just me. I can’t really trust any other game companies than Nintendo. I believe in them. And hey, Wii U has a couple of hardcore games too! X Bayonetta 2 Wonderful 101 …and among others. I have the Wonderful 101, 100% percents it!!! >:3 You will be a true hardcore gamer when you master a Platinum/NES-like difficulty game. Like Mega Man and DKCTF MerryBlind . haha! Well funny you mention this, because I’m like 99% in DKCTF. All I’m missing is one single secret level with its 5 puzzle pieces, everything else is cleared 100%. CaptinnDaGameMaster! 100% TRUE HARCORE GAMER…..just missing one more percent….lol. MerryBlind . …and actually I read that the game can be 200% because you unlock a hard mode after 100% it. So no, TRUE HARDCORE GAMER can only be achieved by reaching 200%!!! CaptinnDaGameMaster! And if you 101% The Wonderful 101..SO HARD. CaptinnDaGameMaster! You should check out meh Miiverse, CaptinGameMaster :3 CaptinnDaGameMaster! Good, when you buy one, you should buy The Wonderful 101. That game kicks Pure Platinum-ass. David Trail Trade it in for a Wii U with DKC TF. CaptinnDaGameMaster! That what I was damn thinking. David Trail RIGHT ON!!!!! Magnus Eriksson You should wait atleast until christmas before buying a Wii U. Sorry to say it, but it will likely keep on being just as unsupported as it always have been. No signs of change. David Trail Go home dude. You are sad. Magnus Eriksson You are sad lying to a guy and tricking him into buying a dead product. Are you not ashamed of yourself? gamer4life How is it dead? Any facts? Because facts shows it is not dead. Idiot…. Magnus Eriksson Do you know how to talk with people without calling them names? David Trail Do you know how to be unbiased? gamer4life So you have no facts. Pathetic. And if that name hurts you, you are a sad kid. David Trail It wont be dead if he buys it…Shame people would rather buy a console with crap games. David Trail Wii U isnot dead… DKC TF just came out and MK8 is around the corner! Magnus Eriksson 6 months = 2 games David Trail You wouldn’t make a very good detective Magnus… Getting your facts wrong like that lmao. Indies, virtual console games don’t count??? Magnus Eriksson No, they dont count. René Park Triolo hehe… it’s funny how people never get it. Magnus is fooling everyone… he actually loves his WiiU and gaming in general. When he makes his infamous statements around the forum it’s just for fun… and he actually admitted to it once. 🙂 Magnus… er du svensker? Jeg er fra Danmark… bor i Odense. 🙂 Wighead I’m 32 and the Wii U is, for me, the only console where I’m sure I can play with my girlfriend, my friends and my kids… PS4 and Xone are not the consoles for me right now as I don’t have enough free time to play games that are not grab and play and that i’m fed up, after 15 years, of FPS and sports games that are almost the same year after year. Now I can buy only 2 or 3 big game a year as I have only 5 to ten hours a week for gaming. For example, I bought AC4 in November and I’m only at 48% completion… I might buy a PS4 but not before a price drop or not until some games I am really interested in comes out, grafix are not a system seller for me, only games are. Mario And if you ever buy Super smash bros for the WiiU, make sure to hone your fighting skills. Because once I get that game, I will literally smash you and everyone who wants that game to oblivion and I will show no mercy. But don’t get scared. I’m not menacing anyone. I’m just pointing out that I’m a very skilled gamer and well, I can literally destroy everyone in this game. Bye! Mendoza Manuel I have some sense of renewed hope for the next generation of gamers…Good show. – Opinion from a 23-year old CaptinnDaGameMaster! Me too, LIVE LONG AND GAME! -Opinion from a Nintendo lover Nintendo Dragon I’m 21 I agree with a 12 year old for the first time ever. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Heh heh… Levi Johansen I am 94 and I agree with my wife, she is 122 years old. Sam My sentiments exactly. And I’m 14. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Coolz. :3 Blue Hernandez Is Bayonetta 2 out yet? MerryBlind . No it isn’t, but it’s coming out this year. Ace J when i think of nintendo, i think of no 3rd party support. David Trail When I think of Nintendo. I think of the best games. Rockstar are the only developers that you could say are better than Nintendo Ace J rockstar really?? idk man i kinda think nintendo is better then them. but thats just my opinion. CaptinnDaGameMaster! When I think of Xbox, I think of a lot of internet fees, easy, boring, glitchy games, and no backwards compatibility. When I think of Sony, I think of free stuff, lol. But that’s just me. readypembroke A friend at school said that 3D World was just another Mario game. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Then he probably dosent have a Wii U…-_- readypembroke yep! CaptinnDaGameMaster! Tell him to buy one, he’s missing it. readypembroke He won’t. He says it’s dead and all of the anti-Nintendo stuff out of the Book of Anti-Nintendo things to say. CaptinnDaGameMaster! He has no sense of taste for games then does he.. readypembroke All he plays really right now is Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on PC. He says that they should dump the U and that the 3DS is saving Nintendo. He also asked me last week or two that how come I bought a Wii U. Guest I bought all those systems, so there is really no “console war” or “exclusives” for me. – opinion form a 35-yr old. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Well, I’m only interested in Sony/Nintendo for as long as I remember. nin-10-doughfan on the money! Goken I wholeheartedly agree with this 12-year old. -Opinion from a soon-to-be 18-year old. CaptinnDaGameMaster! LET THE OPINIONS CONTINUE! -Opinion from a full-ledged Ninty hardcore gamer- Orange Lada Prefer cool graphics over fun games? There is no indication (at this point) that Wii U’s graphics aren’t up to those of the legacy X86 systems. Wii U doesn’t have the raw power, but it does have some major efficiency as they aren’t using legacy silicon. The only graphics issue on Wii U has been porting. That and the 12/21 year olds who are so stuck on raw processing power that may or may not make a difference, that they miss the games. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Well, I’m only 12, so half the technical stuff you just said don’t make sense to me… Nintendoplaystation Its strange how after years of playing ps360 games you kinda get use to HD but now playing my favourite Nintendo games in HD it kinda seems new again and amazes me. MerryBlind . This game is amazing. I’ve been playing almost everyday since release date. I’m currently clearing the game 100%. I only have one level left to finish. Wanted to finish the game yesterday, but that last level is so hard and funky lol, with flying fishes and stuff and mine cart and flying barrel all in the same level! After probably an hour of trying, I just had to give up for now, because I needed to sleep. Damn sleep. Really people, this is one of the best platformer ever created. Flawless game, really. Gameplay, visuals, music, lasting appeal, fun factor, level design, diversity, everything. Nintendoplaystation Trying to Clear the game at 100%, you are a hardcore gamer. MerryBlind . Thank you? lol Rick Valenta Bought it, haven’t played it yet. I’m anticipating not being happy about the difficulty level as I was with the first one. I’m 30, I play games to relax, not to pull my hair out. Could they not have included a difficulty adjustment? David Trail Nope, it’s the way DK is meant to be. Just go with it improve your skills and challenge yourself! Rick Valenta Maybe when I was 13. Ain’t nobody got time for that!! David Trail Okay, if you feel up to the challenge one day. Give DKC TF a shot ; ) 00EpicGamer00 The game isn’t too difficult, at least for the first few worlds. I never actually died until like…world 2’s boss. World 1 (including the boss) is literally a cake walk. World 2 (until the boss) is really easy too. I think world 3 was easy for me as well. Aside from a few levels and of course the boss. I think the point where it gets (depending on your skill) really hard is world 4 and onward. Also, the rocket and minecart levels, to me, were easier in Tropical Freeze than they were in Returns. Ducked I think it was rather stupid of Nintendo for making this without having a single gamepad feature in gameplay. All it has is off-screen gameplay, the screen goes black when you play on TV. This is just the 2nd year of the Wii U, they should have their newer games to take advantages of the gamepad to add in depth gameplay. These kind of games shouldn’t come out until later when the system has been out for a while. I do think this is a very good game, although I find the controls to be rather poor. I still love the visuals, music, and excellent boss battles. I’d give it more of a 7/10. Although that’s just my opinion. David Trail It does have a game pad feature. Off screen play but I think maybe the items and stuff should have been on the bottom screen. Ducked Well I mentioned that it just had off-screen gameplay. But I was talking about in depth gameplay, as when one if playing on the TV. I agree things like the items could have been on the bottom screen. I’d just like to see Nintendo use the gamepad more with games. LukeMM95 Personally I’d rather they didn’t force gamepad features onto every game. Sometimes it can be useful (like the inventory in wind waker) but if it’s a game like this, why would you need touch screen support? ► A l e x I want a game like Donkey Kong 64 so bad, this one looks like a Mario game 😐 David Trail It doesn’t look like a Mario game dude lol! ► A l e x Im talking about the tipical plataform…Donkey Kong 64 was awesome and better for me David Trail Donkey Kong 64 is a typical platformer like Mario dude. If you think that way lol ; ) URFTBOUND4LIFE . DK64 felt like a Banjo re-skin. Nothing about that game felt like a DK game themizarkshow I will definitely be picking this up, but not until I have a bit more free time to dedicate to it (aka summer) tom This game is great. I hope it cracks at least a million sales! David Trail It will sell way more than that. Nintendo games sell over time. Not launch hype. CaptinnDaGameMaster! Proof: Wind Waker, Super Mario 3D World, and Wii Party U all sold 1 million copies worldwide. :3 David Trail NSMBU and Nintendoland did really well too. ZyroXZ2 Not spamming, legitimate question here: I did a video review of DKC:TF. Do you think I should also post a written transcript of it in a blog so people can read the review as well as watch it? http://youtu.be/yAI3yB8vtyw Magnus Eriksson I bought it. Regret it. Basically the same game as DKCR. 4/10 David Trail Go home Magnus. You hate everything Nintendo! Magnus Eriksson Nope, but I dont like what Nintendo have done with the Wii U. It is a crappy product. David Trail PS4 is a crappy product. Don’t see me b%tching? Magnus Eriksson Yes I see you bitch all the time. You start to cry as soon you see someone having a different opinion than you. PS4 is a better product, but I dont own one. Also I dont care what you think about PS4. Why would I? David Trail PS4 is a better product iyo Magnus Eriksson it is David Trail in your opinion Magnus David Trail Killzone SF, same game as Killzone 3, Killzone 2, Killzone etc. Magnus Eriksson TMNT, Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Lost Levels, Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, Battletoads. Thats games for me, but too difficult for you. David Trail Some of those are hard but to say DKC TF is casual is idiotic… Played Wonderful 101? Sonic Lost World is hard too. Magnus Eriksson W101 is hard because of imperfections in the controller. David Trail Wow, just wow! Magnus Eriksson Sonic was bad programmed. Fierce-Deity Link lol.. did u just see a review and assume the controls are “imperfect?” … if you happen to practice you can do the unite morphs pretty flawlessly.. Wighead I read your comment; basically the same as always. I give it 4/10 😉 gamer4life You don’t know gaming. All you do is hate Nintendo. This game is actually really great. Is it too hard for you? You are what we call “casual’s” in gaming. Get a life you idiot. Magnus Eriksson I probably “know more of gaming” than you kid. gamer4life Than why do you think it is casual? Too hard? I think we know who the dumb kid is……. Magnus Eriksson Nope, too easy. gamer4life LOOL what a liar. Says this game is not challenging. That proves you don’t have it. Even the hardcore gamers think it is hard. I think it is hard. Lol go back to CoD. David Trail Pure idiot… Pure idiot! lonewolf88 kk show me gameplay of how you play it than since its so easy you should only die like 1 or 2 times minimum. David Trail Do you have a beard on miiverse??? Magnus Eriksson Why? Do yu want to be friends? David Trail I’ve seen someone with a beard on miverse and I think he has a similar name and his opinions suck. Magnus Eriksson Oh, I see that you hate people that disagree with you… David Trail Is that you though? Daniel Gonzalez Glad I never bought it. It would be too casual for my tastes. gamer4life This game is too hard for he casual’s. Continue on with COD. David Trail Not as casual as Resogun. You are a fool if you think DKC TF is casual. Magnus Eriksson It is casual. A kids game. David Trail NO Killzone Shadowfall is a casual kidz game. Decker Shado Too casual for your tastes? 😐 What do you do to relax, drink a glass of ethanol and glass shards? Magnus Eriksson It is very casual. Long loading times, a repetition of DKCR. It is actually to DKCR what NSMBU is to NSMBWii. gamer4life Do you even have the game? Do you know what casual is? Idiot…. Magnus Eriksson You are casual. gamer4life Nope. I am more hardcore than you. I own all consoles and play a lot of games. You are casual because you think DKCTF is casual. You know NOTHING about gaming. Idiots…… Magnus Eriksson I dont believe you. You own a Wii U and thats it. David Trail No you are Magnus! David Trail You really are losing it Magnus. DKC TF casual… Magnus Eriksson Yup, I think its casual. Its too easy. David Trail Every game on PS4 is easier than DKC TF jrob23 notice how the trolls now resort to upvoting each other…even when the attempt is pitiful? I do think it’s amusing how every week or so, some new poster who doesn’t know better falls for it and enters into a conversation with them thinking they are normal people. Daniel Gonzalez Indeed. These games would be perfect casual games on mobile devices. Blue Hernandez You’re an angry elf. gamer4life This game is really amazing. I love the designs, which is amazing. I am glad Nintendo made it 60fps/720p rather than 30fps/1080p. The game looks amazing and it is smooth. This is one of the best DK games in a really long time. I truly enjoyed every bit. And I agree, this game might be really hard for some gamer’s, but it is still great. Keep it coming Nintendo! 9.2/10 David Trail One minute Nintendo is too casual… Then they are too hardcore? What is it guys??? Blue Hernandez They’re realizing they need both to survive. Marcus Larsson I hate the speech of casuals or hardcore, who decides which is which? Saul Rivera My problem with the game is how long the bosses are…with no checkpoints in-between phases a least…I mean just today I finally beat the last boss with a friend since other times…after an hour or so on that boss…I would die when it had one or two hits left (from what I saw today when I beat it)…that was an instant power off to make sure I wouldn’t break the controller =_= David Trail It is meant to be like that. Some people prefer hard games. Saul Rivera Hard is one thing…and I enjoyed the whole game because of it…and I remember the Wii game too and enjoyed it as much….but my complaint is how long the boss fights are and having to begin from the start when you’re right there at the end..maybe after an hour with the boss…. To go back and play another long session of a boss is just not fun…it’s frustrating… Blue Hernandez That’s definitely a throwback to the oldschool platformers haha, which is actually making me really want to get this game 😛 David Trail That is a good thing. At first i was like wtf but now I am just determined to beat the horrible owl as I have donned him. It is an old school game. That is why it is like this. Games have too many check points now imo. zajac1661 it is better to have games you never beat, because of difficulty. 90% of games today are made with casual difficulty in mind. zajac1661 well this is why i love the boss fights. Justin Thiessen Tropical Freeze is easily my favorite game for Wii U so far. I also was not really that excited when I heard they were making a DK game for Wii U, but I decided to give it a tray and I really like it. Unlike Super Mario 3D World, which was an absolute disappointment, the media hype and gamer reviews for this title are actually spot on. Buy this game if you haven’t already! Blue Hernandez What didnt you like about 3D world? I just got it but haven’t had time to play because of Titanfall. David Trail You should play SM3DW. It is way better than Titanfall. Blue Hernandez Haha I litterally just picked up SM3DW last night and all my friends wanted to play Titanfall lol. I’ll give you its different than Titanfall but I don’t like to compare games, especially not different genre’s. I’ll definitely play it tonight though 😛 David Trail SM3DW lived up to the hype for me and then some imo. David Trail DKC TF went from 82% tto 83 on metacritic%. Is this due to Wii U daily??? YAY anyway… Wii U has the highest rated games!!!!! Sultan 7 ive been gaming for a long time. my first gaming system was a Vetrex. yeah. i think the wii u is a near flawless machine. the console offers a variety of control options, off tv play, and i love how i can play music from youtbe while i surf the net. the Wii u is all i desire in terms of next gen. i have a 360 and a ps3. if i want a generic FPS i can play them there. i would love a madden with two gamepads but that would be too perfect and destroy ps4/x1(football wise). now it isnt perfect. loading personal music and skins should be standard. the wii u has the ibm chip that powers watson a.i. this should be a simple task. that would add more U to the wii U…. i had to lol Sylux I’m not playing dkc tf at this time nor do I own it, although I do keep an eye out on it, I’ll probably won’t pick it up until quite some time after the initial release. Nothing to do with me not liking the game, but I too have quite a backlog of games available on both 3DS and Wii U and only so much time to play them. Building my pile will make me end up in multiple games I have owned/owning but never played. Most of my time goes to MH3U and Sonic: Lost World for now. As always once again great review and video review John. David Horowitz I don’t see it’s difficulty as a “Con”, nor do I think that it should lower the final score you give the game. You should put it’s difficulty into a “Something to Consider” section. Many people like difficulty! C4 I doubt it did get a lower score due to this “con”. IMHO other games have better options choosing easy to hard difficulty levels. The Wonderful 101 is a good example. I simply chose the lowest difficulty until I got the controls. And you can switch after each mission. DK would be as much fun or even more with a bit less challenge for many people I think, at least on the first playthrough. On the other hand DK deserves at least one extra point for the music! 🙂 Aturi Awesome review john! I just bought a Wii U and it’s amazing but i still have to discover wich are the best games to start with! Have you some suggestions? (i have the mario&luigi bundle) Thanks! MerryBlind . Ok I’ll give you a list of what I have so far and what I’m planning on getting. I have: -Mario & Luigi bundle like you -Sonic Lost World -Zelda Wind Waker HD -DKC Tropical Freeze All excellent games, although I know Sonic didn’t do unanimity among critics and customers alike, but Sonic games are always loved and hated at the same time. If you like platforming games (and I assume you do since you bought a Wii U) I think it’s a good one. I will get: -Wonderful 101 -Pikmin 3 -Super Mario 3D World -ZombiU -MAYBE Rayman Legends They’re all high-quality exclusives (I buy my multiplatform games on PC), except Rayman, and pretty much all those games can be enjoyed by any gamer, despite games like Wonderful101 or Pikmin 3 looking weird at first. Congrats on your Wii U purchase! Have fun! hahahero I’m enjoying it for the most part thus far. However, I feel like there is a lag in the controls. For a lack of better words- sometimes my movements feel clumsy, not very tight. The best way I can put it is that at times I feel like I’m controlling a drunken Luigi. Maybe it’d feel like there is less latency if I played on the game pad? I hope not, bc my girlfriend and I are playing it together atm. Has anyone else experienced this? Steve6cupcakes That “lag in the controls” is how Donkey Kong Country games are supposed to feel. hahahero Nope, the “lag in the controls” is NOT how DKC games are supposed to feel. Not this one anyway. Switched to gamepad and it felt like a completely different game. Sucks bc I prefer seeing it on the television in full 1080p. I don’t understand why they don’t have the option to have the display on both the TV and gamepad at the same time. Steve6cupcakes huh as long as that works for you it was fine for me on the tv but what ever oh and it’s only 720P btw MerryBlind . Try it on the GamePad. If it feels more responsive, than your TV simply has a lot of input lag. If you haven’t done this already, find the Game Mode in your TV menus if it has one, it reduces input lag. I’m assuming you have an LCD TV. If you’re playing on an old CRT, then it’s just how the game feels. hahahero You were a 100% correct. It is the input lag. I switched the gamepad and it felt like a completely different game. MerryBlind . Like I said, try to find out if you have a Game Mode setting in your TV menus. On mine it’s an option you turn ON or OFF, but I know on others, it’s simply choosing the Game presets (rather than Cinema, Sports, Vivid, Standard, etc.) hahahero Interesting, I do have that. I always thought it was just an display setting. I.e. preset adjustments for color, brightness, contrast, etc. Didn’t think it would have any effect on the latency issue which plagues several wii u games. I’ll check it out though. Thanks. MerryBlind . Well see if you do feel a difference, it might just be visual differences indeed, but for example Cinema/Movie is often the preset with the most latency, because it’s the one with the most processing, whereas Game Mode usually turn off certain things, or grey out certain options to diminish the latency as much as possible. BTW, it applies to all gaming console/PC, not just WiiU. If it does work for you, all your favourite games will feel more responsive than ever! Jayden I haven’t finished Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze but I love the game. I’m a newcomer to the DKC series, and I can say that it is pretty challenging. But I don’t mind the challenge, because I’ve been playing a lot of easy Wii U games (Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros U). Marcus Larsson Im 29 years old, i loved Mario 64. But when i buy a new game these days i always look for those intriguing stories in games. Such as heavy rain, walking dead, mgs, south park sot with those entertaining stories. And when i bought sm3dw i thought it was fun and all, but i still want a story even if it is cheesy, or at least a free World to explore like m64. Thats when i realized that Zelda is the only Nintendo-exclusive i love. Mario kart is fun for group-play and all, but we all know that we mostly often play by ourself. Im so disappointed that Nintendo hasnt evolved the way i wanted. Its just not for me anymore. MerryBlind . Dude if you only want to play games with good stories, don’t play Mario, wtf. Mario has never been about telling a story and never should be. Mario Kart is a party game indeed, you play it when you have friends over, and that’s the reason it’s great. There are plenty of games with stories, not all game need an insanely deep and fleshed out one. I love that Mario games barely have any story, and I wish Sonic didn’t try so hard to have one in every single of its games. I play platformer for the platforming, not for the story. You should play RPGs or Interactive Movies like Heavy Rain like you mentioned if you want a good story. Or watch an actual movie… Don’t complain that a product doesn’t do what it isn’t advertised to do… C4 Agreed, but those IPs don’t have the right environment. There’s no coherent mushroom kingdom for example. The paintings in 64 of course are a great hook to explore levels, while at the same time you’re kinda stuck in the castle having to save Peach. 3D World feels even more random then most Mario games – they should have made a full snow world, one world with the japanese style levels (the ones where you can open doors with the touchscreen) , revisit Sarasa Land and so on, each with its own narrative. In a nutshell they need other IPs for that IMHO – although as I said I’d prefer a bit more coherent Mario worlds as well – like Zelda, Metroid, the Monolith games and so on or of course new IPs… They could have expanded during the last 10 years but they did choose not to, as far as we can tell (except acquiring Monolith) during the “Iwata era”. Majora’s Mask well well well after being a nintendrone for all my life and selling m wii u 2 months ago and buying a ps4 its nice seein that this site still is bullshit SELL THE WII U BUY A PS4 MerryBlind . I’ve put about 70 hours in this game so far, and I’m at 111% completion. Lot of content, and lot of replay value! val berger DKC:TF is getting better as you play it. The first stages didn’t really impress me that much as they weren’t too surprising or creative but further progressing through the game really got me coming back over and over again. Only thing I don’t really agree are the boss fights. I fought 2 bosses so far and it’s always more like really exhausting and way too long. If a final boss would have those patterns, I could live with it but making every Boss such an endless fight just isn’t my thing. But yeah, really cool game. I still would say it would’ve been better if they’h done something like Metroid (or … SOMETHING ELSE) instead and throwing this one out afterwards as 2 2,5D DKC-games in a row just isn’t so appealing, but in any case it’s good to be back with the Kongs. brian Wow, great video review. I almost bought this game like four times now. I think I will today or tomorrow. Thanks for the awesome video. CCM This game obviously looks amazing being the first DK game in 1080p. The fur mapping on Donkey Kong and friends is awesome too. It’s hard as hell though which will definitely turn some people off for sure.
