Today is the release date for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and to celebrate, Super Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that Diddy Kong will be joining the roster. Diddy Kong isn’t a new character for this game, but it’s nice to see old faces returning in high-definition.

Check out some of the screenshots, where you can find Diddy playing with Pikmin, doing yoga with the Wii Fit trainer and Fox McCloud, and even showing Little Mac who’s boss. Anyone excited to play Diddy in the upcoming game? Let us know!

Great, Nintendo now let’s talk about a proper Diddy Kong Racing sequel …

    • Niknique

This. Nintendo needs to hear this.

      • Rukiafan Rukiachan

        I hope so.

    • That guy who hates Spike

He’s already in Mario Kart. What else does he need?

      • Enumerating Wishes

I don’t believe you have played Diddy Kong Racing.

        • That guy who hates Spike

I never personally owned it, but I have played it at a relatives’ house. Yeah, it’s fun, but I like Mario Kart more, and I don’t think Nintendo should work on a racing game that’s already lost most of it’s originality from Mario Kart. The same might go with F-Zero, depending on how Mario Kart 8 feels.

          • Enumerating Wishes

From a technical sense you can say Sega All Star Racing Transformed was the closest thing to Diddy Kong Racing considering the vehicle transformations. Land, air, sea. However I think it’s still possible to do something with either franchises. At the same time I think it’s been so long since DKR’s release that I’m not even sure if a sequel can be justified. They’d have to do a lot more to create quality on tier with Mario Kart 8.

          • That guy who hates Spike

I’m sure that’s what they said when making the DS version. Is DKR DS any good?

          • Enumerating Wishes

Compared to the original N64 version it’s a touchy subject. Graphically I like it better and the controls are more “restrained” (in a good way.) However I felt as though the airplanes were dumbed down since we’re missing fancy maneuvers. Honestly after all these years it’s not bad but I just wish it had more tracks. The new tracks were very good and fresh.

    • The Clockwork Being

What if there was a DK racing track in Mario Kart 8. Probably not but it would be good to pay a homage to the game.

    • Jack5221

Mario Kart > Diddy Kong Racing. Not saying Diddy Kong racing was bad, its just that Mario Kart is 1 million times better. And wasn’t it Rare studios that produced that game?

      • Arthur Jarret

I disagree. Mario kart lacks challenge. I’d love a kart racer with DKR’s difficulty, exploration elements and giant bosses – especially as that game wouldn’t be so random as mario kart is with bullet bill, lightning and blue shield items. (I hate the blue shield for removing the importance of skill)

Furthermore, mario kart 64 was bland and boring, with empty tracks without too much personality compared to DKR. Later mario karts improved a lot, though.

        • SP-937-215

Diddy Kong racing really was an evolution in racing games. What other racing game has a hub world, boss levels, and objects that you have to collect to advance the story? It was pure genius for that generation.

      • rp17

Neither is better than the other. I love them both, but they have completely different gameplay.

      • Mason742

Mario kart had no story but Diddy Kong Racing did. It was one hell of a story as a kid.

    • Rukiafan Rukiachan

      Off topic:

Anyone know how to put someone on ignore list here on this site?

    • DragonSilths

Impossible. Rareware owns the Diddy Kong Racing franchise. Even though Nintendo owns Diddy Kong lol. So Microsoft could make a game like it but cant have Diddy in it. Nintendo could make a new type of Diddy Kong Racing. Though it would be completely different and other then Diddy all the other characters would be gone…

    • Rick Valenta

I actually clicked on this article just to make this comment. Thank you!

  • jjbredesen

Dat fur! Now the cover picture of this article freaks me out it’s DK’s rape face, i guess you could say he puts the ape in rape XD

Nah. That was just DK photo bombing

  • X3Charlie

Whoa that fur texture on Donkey Kong looks terrible.

    • Stuart Thomas

the texture on Diddys tail looks terrible too, but i guess its the price to pay for 60fps

    • jrob23

      sure buddy

  • Genesect4ssb4

He better not be OP like he was in Brawl. Him, MK, Snake, and Olimar need to be nerfed like crazy.

    • Kirbyomega

He wasn’t op in brawl IMO. I play online constantly and I hardly ever see people use him and even rarer is for someone to be good with him. The banana peel was annoying though

  • Jack5221

I have a feeling that they are going to push for 45 characters this time around. Maybe even more. 5 new characters and 24 veterans already confirmed to return with plenty of more to be announced, I feel like they are going to raise the cap! The more the better!

    • jjbredesen

What i am excited for is that they have not yet shown Captain Falcon, and i think they are waiting for the best possible moment to show him, and that is obviously at the same time that they reveal F-Zero U!

      • Javy G

When that happens there will so much FALCON PUNCH memes… the internet will explode!

      • Rinslowe

You sure do know how to hype it up!

CF and F-Zero? yep, got my vote.

        • jjbredesen

Always fun to hype people up so they can get disapointed XD, but i do think it could happen πŸ™‚

    • That guy who hates Spike

Sakarai said not to expect a whole new amount of characters, so I’m expecting another 7 characters to be announced, at the cost of characters like Wolf, Ike, Meta Knight, Snake, Lucas and maybe ROB.

  • RyuNoHadouken

I want my money back on Wii U…this console is smothered in fail sauce

    • Donaald

LMAO but doesn’t it have “the best survival horror game” and that “you’ve played them all”, flip-flopper?

      • RyuNoHadouken

one game doesnt justify a console purchase

        • Arthur Jarret

Some games do (N64’s Mario 64 – now that first year was a drought!)

        • Fierce-Deity Link

well, it can.. some people buy nintendo consoles solely for ssb so yeah.. in any case, there are other games to play on the wii u.. not just zombiu which was good but could have been great…

        • Rinslowe

Depends entirely on the person buying.
But generally speaking, most people won’t be buying a console for one game.
Although I have more than once…

        • Patrick Francis

People pay $60 for 4-6 hour single-player games with no online multiplayer.
          That’s $10 per hour.
          I played SSB:Melee for over 500 hours.
If I also paid $60 for that (which I didn’t) it would be $0.12 per hour.
SSB would need to cost $540 to be equal the cost-to-playtime of most other games that didn’t offer online multiplayer.
WITH online multiplayer (as long as it is good) I can see the next SSB being more enjoyable for a longer time.

          • RyuNoHadouken

            you. need. a. girlfriend

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t know. I think the game looks great. Has solid Gamecube visuals. Will be buying it when the price comes down.

      • Schultz38

C’mon Daniel. You don’t have to troll to make Nintendo fanboys angry. Just be yourself. hahaha ;D

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Too easy of a task.

  • Derek

    The more characters the merrier!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      Like Michael Pachter?

  • Kirbyomega

His feet look really bad in some pictures

    • That guy who hates Spike

If you think his feet look bad, wait until Chrom is announced (Hopefully).

  • Simon Stevens

*sigh* more smash bros news, it’s really killing any nreason for me to buy it

    • Fierce-Deity Link

if u dont want to be spoiled then u might as well not be in the internet… idk wht u expect lol

      • Simon Stevens

It’s always in the title where’ever I look, I miss the good old super smash brothers days of being surprised and excited because I genuinely didn’t know who would turn up, still gonna buy it though obviously, πŸ˜› I just like to complain

        • Fierce-Deity Link

it’s almost impossible to not be spoiled… u have to just avoid the websites and even then some people still spoil u xD
i remember when i bought melee and i was like who the hell is that? and so on.. but im fine with knowing who is in the game nowadays :p

    • Kevin Sepulveda

You come on to a website such as this or any gaming website and expect not to run into spoilers? lol

  • Rick van der Linde

What’s up with all the sudden GFX bashing? Looks good enough for me.

  • Logan Wayman

OK, with Diddy back in the game, all we need is either Dixie, Cranky, or Funky.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Add in Tingle while you’re at it.

      • Arthur Jarret

Nah, he’s too scared that kirby will steal his magic words.

    • Fierce-Deity Link

nooo… just no.. diddy kong is enough… we dont need dixie who would be too similar… and cranky kong is just a no imo as well.. if anything make one of them an assist trophy

    • NkoSekirei

all we need is captain falcon, ganondorf and zero suit samus to be confirmed next

  • Sam

Now we wait for Captain Falcon. And Yoshi. And Ganondorf. And…

  • David Horowitz

You know, when I think about it, it’s a good thing that there’s no blood in Smash Bros.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Of course. Parents would have a fit if their young kids were playing such a game.

    • Fierce-Deity Link

well, there isn’t blood in street fighter, marvel vs capcom, and others : p

      • Jason

I think he was getting at the whole beating small animals until they’re bruised and bleeding would bad thing to put in a video game thing.

  • David Flick

What we really need is to see King K Rool

  • Swampert Master

Hey! Diddy Kong was actually revealed on the European and American release of DKTF, not the Japanese. I knew Sakurai was looking out for us American and European Nintendo lovers!

  • Rinslowe

    The more the merrier!

  • Dimitri Soto

The better have songs from tropical freeze. Theyre amazing
