Amidst a wasteland of negativity and scepticism, a developer spurs our hopes, claiming that the Wii U could outsell the Wii.

On the Wii U, Giants Software’s Mark Schwegler says, “There’s a lot of potential that’s not tapped yet, if it is and if it will be then I think it could be more popular than the Wii because it’s something more.”

The Wii console has sold over 98 million units worldwide, but Schwegler’s stance is firm. “I think it should do as well as the Wii, maybe even better. It’s difficult to say, it’s really depending on what games they will add that really use the extra device you get with it.”

Regarding that extra device, he adds that the Gamepad enables for a whole set of controls, trumping the Wii remote and nunchuk, which, by comparison, often relied on motion technology.

His opinion is fairly straightforward. Wii U is a machine still to be unveiled; it needs great software to bring its features and innovations to life.

Fortunately, there’s no reason to doubt the existence of such software even now. Nintendo has already announced a range of highly-anticipated games set for release this year, and they’ve teased quite a few more to be revealed at E3.

The Wii U may not be selling as well as Nintendo would like. But times change, predictions are premature, and a slew of new experiences awaits just beyond the horizon. What new experiences are you looking forward to?

They really need to increase the distance the gamepad can be from the controller.   tvii would sell them a bunch of units, if it could easily be brought anywhere in the house and used with other tv’s.    So when your friends are over watching sports, everyone can look back over the plays, etc.   When your wife has an oscar party, they could follow along with it.   Others would see it and want it, and eventually people would buy 2nd wii’s to have the functionality all the time in multiple rooms.   Most I know that have wii-u’s now have them in the kids room, or a game room, and the tvii function doesn’t get used at all.

    • WiiUltra

Thats hardware related, not software related. They can’t update gamepad range with a system update. Plus, it was meant to be in the same room with the console. Therefore, the answer is no.

      • Elem187

Its using wireless, so they COULD make a repeater, like how people can buy wireless repeater… or at least a third party could make a repeater anyways.

    • Nintendofreak

weell wiiu is a console not a portable tivo

    • DragonSilths

That all depends on your house. Thickers walls will effect that. Some people can go upstairs, downstairs, attic, basement, or even outside their house on their drive way lol. Some cant.

  • bizzy gie

The Wii is almost at the 100 million mile mark. Way to go Nintendo!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

    •  Living in the past again.  All Nintendo does it talk the past while the other two talk present and future.  The Wii sold a lot – to suckers who did not buy more than one or two games.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

All you do is continue to preach the same thing over and over in recent comments. The writer of this article is entitled to his opinion as well as bizzy. You say you lay facts down, but they’re only analyst based. That’s only predictions, not facts of the Wii U selling poorly. You call it suckering, I call it good marketing. I’m quite sure Microsoft and Sony have been guilty of the same in recent years.

we would like to see battalion wars 3

,metroid, starfox and pokemon for the wii u

    • AkaLink77

yah i agree and of course most of those they will do. And i agree to the artical saying it may do better than the Wii. The wii U is still a baby and has some growing to do but when Smash Bros Comes out it maybe be the best selling system out there! 😀

      • its hard to take you seriously with that picture, but you are right.

        • AkaLink77

lol ikr! sometimes it distracts me when i read it over.

  • Destiny64

the real problem is the price!!!

    •  I think it is a pretty reasonable price for what you get.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Agreed. It’s not lke it’s 600 dollars.

        •  I also suspect that the NextBox and PS4 consoles will be close to $399 for the base model consoles with a relatively small amount of storage with the deluxe units going for close to $500 or more.  Granted they may have a little more raw power under the hood but the enhancement of gameplay remains to be seen.  I think the PS4 will be the same old thing where XBOX might actually be kind of cool with the Kinect 2 and the augmented reality the rumors are hinting at.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

True. Kinect is okay, but it is kinda lacking. Hopefully they’ll do something different with it. Ps4 will most likely be enhanced only with raw power but they usually copy what Nintendo does like the Move for example.

          • Elem187

I don’t think they are doing raw performance this go around… That last comment from a Sony source said “the next playstation is less about performance and more about new ways to play”

God I’m going to roll in laughter next week when they reveal  a system with inexpensive (read budget) components off the shelf stuffed into a box.

          •  Oh then poor Donaald will have nothing to defend.  He will have to run to his mommy to comfort him because he cannot be a hardcore gamer unless he is sitting on his ass with a classic controller in his hand calling other player’s moms whores while gaming online

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            I can imagine that.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Sources aren’t always true. However, you may be right and I hope it’s more about newer ways to play. Graphics in my opinion, have gone far enough and it’d be nice to see some more innovation from Sony.

          • Elem187

Keep dreaming, if MS and Sony go for spec beasts like all their fanbois want, it will be EXPENSVIE.

Sony cannot afford to take a haircut on every system sold, so it will be priced near cost.

    • Elem187

$300 is expensive?? News to me.. When Sony and MS release their systems for 450-600, are people going to complain its too expensive?

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, 450 to 600 is actually expensive. $300 is more of a fair price. $350 is the max.

  • i just want to know what retro is doing…. (please metroid) 🙂

    • Xeno_Elite

      I’m with this guy

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I’m thinking a Metroid game or a whole new ip.

    • DragonSilths

While I would be unhappy with that, They are making Starfox!!! Retros job is reviving Nintendos games that got swept under the rug. They revived Metroid then Donkey Kong. Now its Starfox’s time. Also that rumor of them making their own Wii U game engine is exciting.

      • DragonSilths

        wouldnt* be unhappy

    • All will be revealed at this year E3.

  • Bananapwnz

well at least the wii u is doing better then how the ps3 started! that thing was like 500 dollars when it first came out.

    •  How does that help the Wii U?  I know how it helps you propaganda job, but that’s it.

      • Elem187

Wii U doesn’t need any help. It will sell when the games release.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

You say propaganda quite often on pretty much anything. Sounds hypocritical when you say I call you a bigot(which you are). Are you an active homosexual then? You wonder why people always have nothing good to say to you. It’s comments like that, lol.

        •  Lol.  Wii know the real reason why most have nothing good to say about me, but I am not out for a popularity contest or a paycheck from teh ‘Jr. publicists firm,” I just tell it like it is.  More and more people are seeing the writing on the wall as Nintendo will not be able to get a good game out in time to save the system.  It seems as if Nintendo rushed the Wii U in order to protect itself from the other two and try to sell what they could.  Nintendo always had at least one of the “A” games out when the system, dropped.

  • Elgin Traylor Jr

Metroid Prime 4 anyone? that would blow everything away!!!!!!!

  • I believe Nintendo is committed to adding to the Wii U to make it better with new features and enhancements.   Just like any console with a new way of gaming and control it will take a little time to see it’s full potential.  Some 360 and PS3 fanboys seem to forget when those consoles came out the software library was light, the graphics were relatively weak and over time the graphics got better, the available features got more and the console evolved.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

True story. I can understand that they see it not selling as much at the moment……but it’s just absurd that it’s a flop in just a few months. Sounds really over the top to me. Wii U is weak right now, but I know it’ll pick up and games will have a higher visual quality. Besides that, I doubt  Sony or Microsoft’s next consoles will be that much powerful than the Wii U. They can’t really afford to lose money with each generation.

      •  No need for a higher visual quality if it’s only about gameplay!

        • Daniel Gonzalez

You’re right….it is about the gameplay and always has been. Graphics wise, it’ll get better when developers put more effort in the games. High visuals to me are just eye candy and yes they’re hard to resist, but at the end of the day, those eye candy games are worthless without at least respectable gameplay. Nintendo has always had great gameplay. Maybe the graphics haven’t been that awesome with the Wii, but the Wii U is still premature yet and hasn’t even established itself in the market. I’m positive games will look even better in time.

          •  I only wrote that because you forgot your Nintendo script on gameplay emphasis!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I never emphasize anything lol. You’re right about graphics, but gameplay matters more. As long as graphics are presentable, then it shouldn’t matter. Maybe it matters to you perhaps, but not to me. You have a right to your opinion as I do as well.

          •  According to Nintendo nuts and minimum wage spokespersons, gameplay is all that matters – graphics don’t!  Nintendo is also the only company in the world who knows how to make games and knows how to make games with great gameplay!  If we are to believe you people, Nintendo is the alpha and omega of gaming!  Well, the Wii U will meets it’s omega pretty soon!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

It’s comments like that that make you look ignorant. Firstly, putting “you” people when not all people think Ninendo makes the only great games. For one, I never said that, and two, you’re obviously putting words in peoples mouths just to find some way to be right, which you fall flat doing anyways.

Wii U isn’t in any omega, just your common sense and credibility. We all know you’re a troll, so continue to spew your absurd and over the top drama. We all enjoy your poor outlook on gaming.

          •  Ignorant is not knowing, not saying things that people with a vested interest do not like.  Yeah, I may put some butter on what I write, but it still does not make them less true.  I never see you put down those who always call Nintendo “awesome!” so just having a press conference or for promising a good game almost a year from now.

          • Fumes Inkorporated

I’m not sure why people dont understand that better specs does not only improve graphics. It can provide bigger worlds with better AI, more dynamic events, more art assets onscreen at a given time and a million other things. The issue with Nintendo is 3rd party support, just like last gen. If they can bring in the games they will do well, otherwise it will be like the Wii. I dont want to see Nintendo go away, we always need more competition but their mentality is backwards in many regards. Remember the whole “no one wants to play online” garbage? They are starting to wake up and I hope they continue but if they alienate 3rd party support then that is bad.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Online was a big issue with the gamecube, and they’re at least trying with the Wii U. Their eShop is much improved over the Wii’s.

As for third party support, it’s too early to tell if there’ll be any acutal damage.

  • Holyfire

Deluxe WiiU cost bout 430 in Australia (and that includes a game). Im estimating here PS4/720 will cost certainly more. maybe 500+ for the systems alone. In this market. they’re launches will suffer hard to. WiiU will be in good stride by the time the competition releases.

  • Who is “Giants Software?” How does his opinion coincide with reality?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Perhaps google them? Plus, it’s basically true that there’s a lot of untapped power in the Wii U. Ports from third party companies doesn’t really cut it. It does take a few years for any console to show it’s true potential. So his opinion does hold up and most agree here. Why not let it expand and see where the Wii U goes before being too judgmental over it?

      •  How come when I drop knowledge based off of facts in the negative for Nintendo, I am being judgmental?  How come when this dude does it, we need to wait and see?  It has to go both ways.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Probably cause you have been negative far more about Nintendo than Microsoft and Sony? I mean, from what we know all you have is a 360. So naturally, people are going to think you’re being a fanboy based on the fact you write Nintendo off for practically everything. Plus, your facts can be questioned as I have a right to do so. Yes, you seem knowledgable, but that doesn’t mean you know everything there is to know about games, the market and media. You come off as too much of a know it all. Do you race with Jesus on water too? Maybe look at if from our perspective and maybe you’ll see you come off too rash and immature. True, some have been immature to you, but as an adult as you say you are, shouldn’t you just i don’t know, ignore it?

And yes, I do play some games I’m not fond of all the way through, especially if that game was given to me as a gift. No one cares if you give your opinion with some analysis, but analysis is just predictions, not factual. Yeah, Wii U isn’t doing all that well at the moment, but saying it’s a flop already is quite rash and adding that it’s doomed this coming september is a prediction, not a fact.

I’ve never attacked you, only disagreed with you when I feel you are wrong or blowing things out of the water. I’ve kept up with video games my whole life, but even I don’t know it all, and neither do you, so just leave it at that. I say that’s pretty fair. There’s no positives or negatives in this, just opinion.

          • Elem187

Bravo.. let the trolls have it.

  • Ryan House

I totally wish that the Wii U disc Opening Lite up just like the Original Wii Except Maybe in a Different Colour like Green!

  • Im patiently waiting for Lego City Undercover

  • bizzy gie

What would you guys prefer the Wii U to cost? $200-250 right out of the box? The 3DS XL costs 200 bucks. $300-350 is very reasonable price. If it cost as much as or less than consoles that have been out for 7 years with a plethora of price drops, then it wouldn’t be worth anything.

I guarantee the other two guys’ hardware will cost $400-500 and NOBODY will care at all.

  • InterTripleteWorldChampion

This is exactly what anybody playing with this console thinks.

  • Aiddon

I just think it’s funny how people are getting into a tizzy over the January number,s ignoring how well the numbers for November and December were.

  • Nintendo first party titles a given.  Just need better third party support.  If that happens, then yes, Wii U better than Wii.
