A few days ago we told you that Dead Island: Riptide developers confirmed that the game’s engine works just fine on the Wii U and that they’d be more than willing to do a port of the game for the console, but that it was up to Deep Silver, the game’s publisher. Armed with that knowledge, one fan took the question straight to Deep Silver’s official Twitter account to ask why the game wouldn’t be coming to Wii U and got a very blunt answer. You can see the exchange below. @enigmaxtreme We looked at whether it would be worth releasing it on Wii U, but decided against it. — Official Deep Silver (@deepsilver) March 20, 2013 It’s interesting to see a third party developer admit that it has no interest in the Wii U yet, simply because the numbers don’t work out in their favor. It’s understandable even, as the Wii U has stagnated during its launch window, which ends this March 31st. Most of the games released during this period launched with the console and the only real significant titles that debuted did so this month. Hopefully Nintendo will have something amazing at E3 to show us. local_offer Dead Island Riptide Deep Silver Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Nintendo shares up 20% since Switch launch What's your dumbest death in Breath of the Wild? Mario Kart 8 Switch vs Wii U comparison Miyamoto shot down this stamina regen idea for BoTW Nintendo Network maintenance this week Nintendo releases Zelda: Breath of the Wild a gobrowniesgo Thats B.S!! You know why? B/C they want people to support 360 n ps3.. lf it came out for Wii U it would put the other versions to shame..pc never counts.. Ultranist PC always counts since you can plug it in a TV and play games with any gamepad gobrowniesgo l meant they never count because no console can touch a pc..yet anyways.. Ryan Smith What exactly do they gain from the Wii U failing? Are you that dense? gobrowniesgo Well for starters, lt could be just the time it takes to bring it to a new system. lt was built for last gen. And most gamers have more than one system, there for taking away some ofvthier projected sales.. Pattonfiend67 It is not BS. I am the biggest Nintendo fanboy that there is and it is PERFECTLY EASY to understand why they will not spend hundreds of thousands of dollars porting and paying people to port it when they will not see the return immediately or even at all on their investment. The installed user base is practically nothing on the Wii U, this is why I buy every single indie game, DLC and game under $20.00 on the eShop. Getting games to come to your preferred home console starts with the fans and them spending their money on what is presently available. It also hasn’t helped us that we have only two actual Nintendo made games to choose from so far; NintendoLand and NSMBU which has made it so noone is buying the system. Why buy a brand-new Nintendo system immediately when there are no Nintendo games to play? Doesn’t really make much sense when you look at it that way, huh? gobrowniesgo I bet MH3 moved some consoles n sold tons of games. Same with NFS but l doubt that sold any systems. they have to realize that most people have played the ports when they were released on other systems. l don’t understand how they expect to sell lots. But a new game released at the same time would sell lots cause no one played it years before.. Unless it has to do with the time it would take to put it on the Wii U.. Untrentide MH3 made the PSP a success, itll definitely help the Wii U 🙂 Pattonfiend67 i cannot believe i got a thumbs down with so many valid points. there is ignorance to the truth and just plain stupidity… looks like wiiudaily is full of both… audi lover Dont worry about the thumbs down mate your comments are bang on the truth nintendo need to pull there finger out bing on pikmin 3 now jay This is the internet, most people have the intelligence of a starfish. MetroidZero Or a sponge. RonaldRayguns Wow… you buy alot of shitty games. NkoSekirei like u bitch ur more shitty then any other troll that annoys us the most RonaldRayguns Thats hilarious. Metal_Man_v2 Agree with everything that you said, except that you are NOT a fanboy. That term has a negative connotation that usually is used for people who blindly follow one fandom, while dismissing other fandoms for no general reason. But great points! NkoSekirei will dont wry retros secret game is gonna blown their minds away if it turns out to be metroid prime 4 or star fox but just saying we got great line up of games coming out in coming months and later this year too jay PLEASE NO!! I wanna See Retros NEW IP. Let someone else handle Metroid/Star Fox. Teem Four Tress Too Who gives a crap about this game. Nintendo does not need dead island, it just needs mario and thats it. RonaldRayguns Deep Silver – ”Wii U’s sales suck and our games not exactly a system seller” Nintendo – ”Fuck you” gobrowniesgo Kinda reminds me of EA..l bet they have tons of bugs and Nintendo told them to fix it n they said ‘NO’..typed from Wii U Gpad Colin Tosh It isn’t actually Nintendo or their fanboys to blame. You know the people who bought Wii but didn’t buy their multiplats on it? Those are the ones to blame. I would wager at least half of all PS3 and 360 owners also have (or have had) a Wii at some point. I believe games like this can sell on Nintendo since there are plenty of proven cases where it has happened. These are the people who third parties should blame. Luckily I am one who didn’t just talk and voted with my wallet. And because I buy my games on Wii U it doesn’t gather dust. There are enough of those multiplat users out there to justify profits for any company. Its just they don’t take the option when they get given it and complain later. gobrowniesgo I can’t wait to see the sales report from this week..lt may change minds.. audi lover Actually I own wii, ps3, 360, i7 power pc and since buying my wii u, admitadly only a month ago, but I havent touched the other systems since, (apart from using CAD on pc for work) Ive bought darksiders 2 and batman arkham city for 3rd party games as I never got those previously on the other systems, but you cant blame people who already own a system for not buying ports that they’ve already played, mass effect 3 is an amazing game but im not gona go out and buy it again just because its on wii u now, thats just the way it is, what wii u needs is nintendo to pull there fingers out release some quality games themselves, thus selling stack loads of hardware and increasing 3rd party support, its the only way it will happen gobrowniesgo you should try ME3 on the U. unless you played it on pc. The game looks way better and that wierd ME lighting isn’t present..l tried it but didn’t buy it.. HydePark1980 This is exactly what Deep Silver was trying to avoid having to say about the Wii U in the first place. They can hide behind the excuse of poor system sales now but just remember at some point this system is going take off. So the next time you guys release a game on every platform and skip the Wii U I hope you got a good reason for it, because you won’t be able to hide behind this one. Especially if the Wii U’s sales numbers are as good as the rest of the competition. Ryan Smith How is it hiding behind an excuse when it’s true. Imagine that the cost of porting is $100,000. (Relatively low, but bear with me) Now add in marketing, freight and shipping, the overhead, and indirect costs (janitor, maintenance, etc…). Let’s just after it is all said and done, the game costs $200,000. Again, that’s a low number, and actually completely unreasonable, but again, bear with me. That would mean that 3,333 copies of the game would need to be sold in order to break even ON FACE VALUE. Now remember that retailers get the game for a lower price, that they then sell at the MSRP in order to make a profit. Now also include the royalties that they would have to pay Nintendo for having the game on their system and using their proprietary disc format. That number increases to 5,000 copies. If it can’t sell those 5,000 copies, what’s the point of making the game? But then again this was just a small example, in the real world those numbers are MUCH larger. There are MUCH more factors involved, and the costs rack up. If a company were to do a risk assessment, something that’s even basic economics, they would see the amount they would have to sell for that console version in order for it to be break even. If they can’t do that, it’s not worth their time….and can you blame them? The Wii U doesn’t have an established base. 4million (rounded up) compared to 74mil and 77mil. Do you seriously not see the problem. Unless Nintendo is footing the bill, these developers don’t have a reason to make the games. HydePark1980 You’re only looking at the surface of a much bigger problem here, I stated that they were hiding for two reasons…… #1 This is not the original reason that was given about the game skipping the Wii U. #2 Let’s be real here even if this system was selling like hotcakes Deep Silver still wouldn’t have ported this game to the Wii U. It’s just that slow sales gives developers the perfect cover not to place games on the system. You think this is all about sales when it comes to the Wii U, I hate to say it but even when sales finally do pick up the excuses are still gonna come about non-development for the Wii U. Can’t be technical – No developer has pushed this system to it’s limits. Can’t be because of difficulty – The few developers that are placing games on the system aren’t having problems, not to mention the developers of this game said Dead Island would have worked fine. The for some odd reason a lot of developers with the exception of Japanese ones aren’t fond of Nintendo. Ryan Smith I’m just going to say “OK.” I don’t argue with morons as it only ends in frustration. HydePark1980 *sigh* Typical response from a gamer of this generation…….the moment someone challenges your opinion you call them a moron. Ryan Smith No, I’m calling you a moron because you’re making speculations just going “ZOMGZ DEY WANT DA WII U 2 FAIL!” That is all you’re going for. So….*sigh* Typical Nintendrone response…the moment a game isn’t coming out the company is against Nintendo. You are a moron. You don’t want to look at the blunt facts. You want to keep your hands over your ears going “nananananana I can’t hear you” while cooking up some conspiracy theory. HydePark1980 All you’ve done here is reinforce my comment before this one. Not your fault though, you’re still young to this industry. Ryan Smith Yup a Master’s in Market Research, BBA in Accounting. Worked in finance and risk assessment in the past. I have NO IDEA how businesses make their decisions with regards to risk analysis and proper forecasting. I have no idea about BEU (Break Even Unit) pricing with regards to multiple sales mixes and proper ABC with regards to sales mixing. I have NO idea what I’m talking about at all. I’m just too young. You have given nothing to back up your claims but pure speculation. If that’s how you want to live, then by all means. But it makes your looks like a Nintendrone blind fanboy that doesn’t want to be rational. HydePark1980 WHOA HOLD ON EVERYBODY SHIT JUST GOT REAL!! Why is it that every time there’s a dispute some joker always has to throw out their credentials, as if any of that makes difference. With all that vast knowledge you still don’t realize that there is much more to this industry than everyone’s bottom line. Ryan Smith So let me get this straight. You throw out speculations without reasoning, get called out and given a numbers approach that is significantly more fact based when looking at a risk assessment; and instead of just dropping it you continue with your speculations. You then resort to just the “you’re too young to understand.” Then when given the reasoning why I say what I say, you just go with the “LOL YOUR CREDENTIAL! LIKE DAT MATTERS! LOL” OK, got it. I’m done, you’re refusing to listen and just want to go with your wild specualtion. “more to this industry than everyone’s bottom line.” Now that’s just cute. I forgot companies are founded to lose money and just make everyone happy. I think I’m going to make a new company named: “FreeStop” where I just give out games to everyone, since the bottom line isn’t what matters. -.- Anyways, have fun with your lack of credentials and speculation. When you’re finally done living an hourly wage life, then talk to me. HydePark1980 Slow down there Donald Trump, nobody here stated that the bottom line wasn’t important. Everything that you’ve written up to this point has been a show of pure emotion. Even after all this you still don’t get it, no matter how many numbers and statistics you throw out it doesn’t dismiss the fact that this industry is not as black and white as you think it is. I also find it interesting that you keep accusing me of speculation and yet you make all these wild speculations about me. With the exception of my opinion that differs from you own you don’t really know me at all. I could just turn around and say that you’re just another arrogant clown with a Master’s that thinks he’s always right because he’s got one…….but that would just come off as speculation. dgallo911 the worst part is nintendo listen to all these delusional fanboys and dont think there is a problem . gobrowniesgo It’s probably pretty simple.. Why would a Dev. take the leap for only one console? RyuNoHadouken i loved the first one and as much as i would have loved it for wii u, i had to pre-order the PS3 version…im not mad at Deep Silver though…theyre a business and puttin it on Wii U make no cents at this point in time. Xavier Lopez Chabelo Yep… its reasonable Guest Wii U is not gonna fucking find homes if they aren’t bringing any game to the Wii U. Ni games= No sales Michael Jurado calm your tits guest no reason to even jump the boat like that i mean why would we want a 2 or 3 year old game that kinda sucked >.> ICHI Because its a new game? Michael Jurado its not really new if its been out for years and in those years didn’t do as great as expected ICHI Dead Island has been out for years dead island riptide is the sequel only just released set immediately after the first game. How is it not a new game? Am i missing something? Jennero Rossi You are going to hear this a lot from developers until more WiiUs find a home. thesavagelife8 Wii U is not gonna find any fucking homes if it has no games. No games no sales so developers are gonna have to bring the games then they will get the sales. See how Wii U was selling when it first came out? Because it had games at the time but Wii U went two months with no games so it had no sales. Like I said no games no sales. Ryan Smith Soooo they should risk hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, hoping that it will be enough to move units? Sound logic… Petri Well, it is retarted that publishers expect Nintendo and its titles to move massive amount of systems (2-3 milllion they already move is pretty impressive in short time with just a few games), while Sony and MS (especially MS) live 99% of 3rd party games and multiplats. I’m still waiting for the best games to release for my Wii U, patience is a virtue. gobrowniesgo Why can’t you grasp the concept of Nintendo’s strategy? Do you not understand that Devs. aren’t going to make the leap for only one console? Thats why we get ports. Dead lsland was built for last gen. and it would take time to redo it for the U. Lastly Nintendo won’t do anything major till E3. It makes no sense to go all in,when MS n PS haven’t revealed anything yet. Nintendo is going to E3 fully loaded and don’t have to unveil thier system. all thier focus will be on Games and new announcements. While the others have to talk all about Hardware. lt wouldn’t surprise me if the big N takes E3 by storm.. Justin Jefferson Tell them WII U or we pirate it!!! dylanbob121 Who cares?this game will suck anyway. ICHI Awww dead island was insanely buggy but good fun and had a nice, easy online mode even telling you when random people were at about the same point in the game so you could just jump in if you got stuck. I liked it overall, and would have bought it for wii u. As it stands though, mh, nfs, resi will be taking up my time over the next few months, hopefully soon i’ll be able to add deus ex to that list too. Sidney Majurie I’m sorry but I didn’t realize that the first Dead Island was such a great game. I would understand it if all this coverage was for Tomb Raider or Bioshock. I mean Ken Levine was one of the developers in the reel at E3 2011 praising Wii U. Praise the console with your games… not your rhetoric. But yeah, Dead Island? Mario Stupid developer. Michael Jurado he is not stupid as a developer you have to look at his point of view why would we port a game that didn’t do so great on 2 consoles to a console that practically no one knows about Ryan Smith Um…the first Dead island shipped 5 million copies. It was a HUGE success and actually did beyond great for them. In truth, it launched the company. Petri To be honest, it was over hyped. Not a bad game, but trailers made it seem it was deeper game than what it really was. I doubt this next game will reach the same level of success. enigmaxtreme Dead Island only sold 200K on PC though RaShaun Forte I love Nintendo, but I must admit that they ARE stubborn. What they need are not only their AAA titles that they are known for, but also some new Nintendo IP’s. I can GUARANTEE you that if they announce at least 2 brand new original Nintendo IP’s their sales will shoot through the roof. And I don’t mean another add-on to an already established universe (like a new Mario character or something) I mean something completely new and different. It doesn’t have to be an M rated game, it just has to have Nintendo’s trademark imaginativeness and be fun and show off the Wii u’s capabilities in such an impressive way that it makes developers wanna work on their console if only for the sole purpose of trying to one up Nintendo. Having good third party games is good and all and yes Nintendo does need some good third party support, but let’s just face it, everyone’s just waiting and hoping to see Nintendo bring something new to the table and wow us like we know they can! The only problem is will Nintendo get their heads out of their asses and actually give us what we want? Honestly, if Nintendo fails I’m done with gaming because that will be the first step in the downfall of gaming as the market will become flooded with generic rehashes of the same crap with just prettier graphics. Innovation and creativity will die and be replaced by greed and a need to just put out what looks “cool” instead of what’s fun. Sorry lol I got a little carried away there. swalla64 I think developers are not making games for Wii U because they don’t consider them next gen yet! gobrowniesgo Why would a Dev make the leap for only one console? GoonieGooGoo4 Nintendo better have something big at E3……this is categorically the worst launch in any console I have ever purchased ….and that goes all the way back to the Atari 2600. It will be interesting to see the absolute pure BS Reggie pulls out of his butt in regards to Wii U sales at E3. There is absolutely ZERO positive spin that can be had from these abysmal sales #s…….I seriously did not think it was possible for a brand new console to be played less than my original Wii….but Nintendo has managed to top themselves in utter lack of support for the console. It is just plain depressing….with the Next XBOX and PS4 coming……it is looking like NIntendo has another Virtual Boy on its hands. Robzy1990 I wouldn’t let it bother you. The original Dead Island was complete crap.
