Today Nintendo issued a statement that the Club Nintendo service it runs in Japan has been hacked, leaving thousands of Nintendo fans in Japan who use the service with their details such as name, address, phone number, and email stolen.

Club Nintendo does not store any credit card information so payment details were not taken, but information “doxxing” is a common step for hackers in identity theft scams. The service received 23,000 unauthorized login requests between June 9th and July 4th.

Nintendo is now urging all of its Japanese participants to change their passwords. No word has been mentioned about Club Nintendo in America or Europe, but we’ll keep you up to date as more information is released.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Wasn’t there another company that was hacked just barely, this is getting pretty serious.

    • Mario

What’s the name of the company?

    • Yes. Ubisoft announced a few days ago that its Uplay service had been hacked. Uplay is a service similar to Steam that works even on Ubisoft’s console games, so it’s a serious intrusion.

    • SilverDrake20

There was a bunch of hacks back when PSN was hacked as well. Sega, Sony and others were compromised. This just shows they don’t value our security if they can get hacked so easily.

  • Mario

Oh my gosh! Hope this doesn’t happen on America!

    • Sol Ridgeway

If it happened here, It would just be Obama adding to the Prism Project. No big deal, he is likable.

      • LoZ4life98

Proud to be an American, cuz I know Obama’s watching me!

        • fireheartis1

Wow I hope you and Sol Ridgeway are trolling. Because for a president to be doing this crap should be impeachable. It’s unconstitutional and very scary to know that a president thinks he’s our ruler not our freaking president.

          • Mochlum

            They’re joking.

          • Gabriel Shea

            It’s called sarcasm not joking

  • Sam Norberg

When PSN was hacked it cost Sony quite a sum. I hope it goes better for Nintendo.

    • This is not the same level as the PSN hack. In the PSN hack, credit card information and other details were stolen, leading to thousands of people having their financial lives stolen out from under them.

Club Nintendo doesn’t store payment information, but people should be vigilant with their information over the next few weeks, nonetheless.

    • Shigeru Miyamoto

HAHA, yes let the competition die!

      • Morits Lian

Don’t you, Mr. Miyamoto, understand fully that competition is good for the market?

      • Logic

You are the worst Shigeru Miyamoto EVER!

        • Shigeru Miyamoto

        • nin-10-doughfan

          is he the real miyamoto?

          • Logic

If he’s the real Shigeru Miyamoto, then I’m Link and I found access to the internet in Hyrule.

            – Logic

      • Mario

Okay! Now I’m sure that you’re a Miyamoto doopleganger!

      • Ducked

If there was no competition then they could make the Wii U $800 and people would have to buy it ’cause it be the only thing on the market.

Stop posting, your not cute anymore…

        • Shigeru Miyamoto

Aww, you thought I was cute! <3

          • Ducked

            Just stop…

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

Just chill the fuck out, I’ve stopped with the jokes.

          • Ducked

            You’ve blown your cover 🙂

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

I know that, no one would be stupid enough to believe that I was actually Shigeru.

          • Ducked

Well duh. That’s why someone as dumb as you would try right?

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

I wasn’t trying to make anyone believe I was actually Shigeru I was joking around you dumb fuck.

          • Ducked

Duck doesn’t have a ‘F’ in it you silly rabbit.

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

            Oh sorry, my mistake.

          • Ducked

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

Ha ha rofl lol lawl huehuehue meow NEIGH!

      • Satoru Iwata

Please understand, that Miyamoto-san had a very bad case of teriyaki beef. I don’t think the Sake helped matters much as well. I apologize on the behalf of Nintendo for his poor choice of words. We would never want competition to die. Without rivals, we would have no more drive to make such quality products.

Miyamoto-san is in the Dungeon of Bowswer’s Castle awating punishment for his crimes. Once again, I am very sorry for his harsh words and we at Nintendo won’t tolerate it.

Thank you for supporting Nintendo and its products.

        • NkoSekirei

seriously u 2 need to get a life the joke isnt funny anymore

          • Shigeru Miyamoto

You need to calm down it’s a joke it isn’t hurting you in anyway, if you dislike you can just leave. I am a very happy Nintendo fan I just like to make a joke every now and again.

          • SuperSmashMan2

            I think it is

  • Zakariyya Al-Quran

the problem is that if you have your club nintendo linked to your wii shop or nintendo e-shop which stores your credit card

  • Linskarmo

I pity people who would rather attempt to worsen others’ lives than try to better them.

  • DemonRoach

lol. Now all the ninty fanboys can be rounded up and thrown into the ocean.

    • Adrian

? Are you sick? Why would you say such a thing? Are you a serial killer or something?

      • NkoSekirei

nah hes probably a mentally disturbed person that need to be locked up in a mental hospital with a strait jacket

No you don’t hate hackers bro, you hate crackers. There is still a major difference between the two. A cracker is out to crack the code to in order to create harm on someone. A hacker is a paid professional to hack code to find viruses and such. There is a major difference.

  • Michael DeVore

I understand reporters don’t know what question to ask when these things happen, but…

Did Nintendo have the Passwords Encrypted and Double Hashed with Salt?
If so then sure change your password, but there isn’t a chance in hell of them getting your password.

However, I can confirm Ubisoft ether didn’t have encryption or didn’t double hash the passwords. There is a clue when a company isn’t following best practices. If you say you forgot your password and they Email you your password they’re not following best practices. If they send you a link, or a new password they do that because they have no way or reversing the hash and encryption. Who cares if a hacker gets your encrypted hashed password. There’s nothing they can do with it.

With Ubisoft the hacker there took the throw away username and password combo and tried logging into my Steam account. Nice try, but that one is locked with a different email address with two key authentication. However, that tells me that the Ubisoft hack was reversible encryption if it even was encryption.

doxxing is a real issue, but the password concern is greater.

Man, I don’t know why people use their computer powers for evil. I use mine for good :).

    • Mario

And for playing games in the computer.

  • ReggieFils-AimeNintendo

Don’t Worry Americas Body is Ready for this, we have my man, Obama to aid us

  • Hugh Quinn

  • The Unknown Legacy

Well, somebody really wants to know the platinum and gold rewards… xD

    • Mochlum

I actually have a really cool idea for the awards. It isn’t likely AT ALL, but it would be cool if you got one of the four E3 Best Buy Demos for free if you get gold and two of them if you get Platinum. It isn’t likely at all but it is a cool idea.

Largely unreported in the media – the biggest cyber-war is currently ongoing.

While the industries are currently focused on marketing always online multimedia and ‘the internet of things’ – while offering easy, fuss-free connection of these things: it seems the consumer isn’t really in control of their device.

Neither are the companies offering services for the device, in many cases.

On an unrelated note: who else liked the plot of terminator 3?

    • ICHI

Not me! Though I did really like that when The Royal Air Force started testing unmanned planes they were controlled via a satellite someone with a great sense of humor called Skynet!! I don’t know if thats tempting fate or not but now we can shoot down planes with laser beams ( http://youtu.be/QbbB-uw02Bc ) we’ve got to be close to some sci-fi styled end of the world scenario 🙂

  • Ducked

People who were meant never to exist, and aren’t whole. Another word for Nobody.

    • NkoSekirei

hackers have no life their just abunch of jack@$$s that need to be sent to prison and get u know wat in showers while they drop their soap bars

      • Ducked

That or be dropped into the pacific ocean with tiger sharks and giant jelly fish, and an electric fence surrounding them. I’m fine with either of them

      • SilverDrake20

Yeah because sending them to prison is really going to do social justice and stop hackers.

    • ICHI

Not all of them! Unfortunately like everything with a pure ideal at it’s core (eg Marxism – Comminusm) it’s destroyed by the corrupt nature of the human condition. Simply put…… People are shits.

      • Ducked

I failed to understand your comment????

  • Madmagican

    Well shit.
I just hope nothing too serious was done

  • fireheartis1

Dang it people why can’t the general public get these two terms correct. The Club Nintendo accounts in japan where cracked not hacked. These people aren’t hackers they are crackers. They crack the code to simply harm people. A real hacker is a paid professional who is paid to hack the code to find viruses and other problems before a program is released to the general public. I wish the general public would stop using the hacker term for a cracker. They are two different entities and should stay as such. I’m pretty dang sure I said this already on this freaking sight, yet people still get these two freaking terms wrong. It’s so freaking annoying man I’m telling you.

  • Joyous Killer

Freakin stupid hackers. They made my life hell in Mario Kart Wii….

    • NkoSekirei

dont forget wat they also did on mw3 and bo1 its was really bad on those games especially wen they use god mode, infinite ammo, invisible, and other hacks as well. They can go burn in hell along with those hacker groups that steal peoples credit card information or mess with peoples accounts

    • Ducked

      Lol so true…

  • Steve

I hope this isn’t one of Anonymous’ operations.
