Spotted by Go Nintendo earlier today, the newest issue of Edge Magazine will feature Mario in the cat suit from Super Mario 3D World, which the magazine gives a 9. In fact, the MetaCritic score for Super Mario 3D World sits at a lofty 93, with many major sites giving the game a perfect or near perfect score. Here’s a quick round up of the major sites and their reviews for the title.

We didn’t get an advance review copy so you’ll have to wait for our opinion, but be sure and check these out if you’re excited for the game!

  • Sdudyoy

This game looks great! I can’t wait till Christmas to get it, and the positive reviews is always a plus!

    • Razo_E

I’m getting mine Thursday at midnight! Can’t wait!

    • Ducked

It was funny seeing the PS4/Xbone fanboys reaction to IGN giving this game a 9.6

      • Funkee Dynamite

Ya I was reading those too. A lot of people kept posting and repeating themselves over and over, they were sour for sure

  • SonicLucario

Damn! I knew this was gonna be an awesome game from the start but this was a pleasant surprise to see these amazing review scores.

  • Denvy

Very excited about this. A great week to be a Nintendo fan for sure.

    • Ducked

      Super Mario 3D World
      Mario Party Island Tour
      LoZ: A Link Between Worlds

      Big week for sure! πŸ˜€

      • Sdudyoy

Although Mario Party is going to be fun, If I could pick between Mario Party and what looks to be one of the best Zelda games I would easily chose Zelda.

        • Ducked

Oh I don’t blame you, I would too. A Link Between Worlds looks to be a master piece. I’m picking up both when I get the time, I’m hoping Island Tour isn’t like 8 or 9.

          • Nathan Verbois

I finally picked up a Wii U this morning, and then my car battery died. A new battery ended up being about $140 with tax. There went my dreams of picking up the Link Between Worlds bundle in a few weeks. πŸ˜‰ I’ve got Wind Waker HD to keep me company though.

          • Ducked

Wow, that sucks. I’ve been having car troubles myself, but man that’s a bummer.

          • Kevin Malone

Pfft, $140? Try $400 to, among other things, replace the ignition cable, spark plug, ignition rotor, distributor cap, etc, for the truck to stop dying at intersections and left turns. Why, needs, why must you interfere with my conspicuous consumption of Nintendo products?

    • Gregg

      I’ve got Mario Party coming!

  • Justin OrdoΓ±ez

I had a detailed schedule of the games I was going to play and finish before the new year, and I think this just totally messed that up. Hello, 3D world. Goodbye, 2013.

  • Schultz38

Official Nintendo Magazine of UK gave it the lowest of the listed scores.

    • Boss Hoss

      Conspiracy Theory time!

    • Jeffrey Debris

      Yea, cause 93 is really low… πŸ˜›

    • Decker Shado

I like to think it’s because they’re reviewers of Nintendo games, they’ve got a bit higher standards than the rest of ’em who’ve been entrenched in linear FPS games for the last decade.

    • Josiah Parsons

And yet it got a 93.

    • darkcreap

At least they try to be critical. I prefer that than people awarding them a perfect score just because of the name. I think that a perfect score is awarded too lightly to some games. At least, for me, 100% should be given in very rare ocassions.

I will give it my score when I try it. Then I will know for sure if it deserves better (or worse) than 93.

      • Schultz38

IGN is historically very anti-Nintendo. I suspect their review is just a bandwagon thing. Then again, pretty much EVERY one of their reviews are bandwagon or anti-Nintendo.

Or the game is just that flippin awesome.

        • Simon Stevens

Yeah, they tend to talk down to Nintendo like they haven’t been manufacturing consoles since the 80s, to be honest, I look at the crew and think “why would you take advice from these losers?”, so I don’t, I bought a Wii u and have enjoyed it since with many advantages IGN don’t speak of

          1. No online subscription
          2. No in game purchases (looking at you forza and ryse)
          3. Value price point and great bundles
          4. Safe online environment for my child
          5. Exclusive after exclusive (1st and 3rd party)
          6. Best web browser experience for console
          7. 1080p native games (no bs, right outta the box)
          8. Backwards compatability
          9. Virtual console
          10. Off tv play (Vita is required for ps4, added expense)
          11. Porn on the big screen (xhamster + hentai = the absolute happiest of all possible endings, yes I am THAT disgusting)
          12. Innovative gamepad (perfect for a game like rollercoaster tycoon and point and click adventures, get on it Nintendo)

I just don’t understand what advantages the ps4 and xbox one have, enlighten me?, so far all I see are boring games that want to recharge you in game and recording two and a half men but hey, if your happy with that then have fun with your piece of shit ^.^ sincerely.

Anyone care to add to the list of advantage Wii U?

      • Nate

Like all of the perfect 10/10 awarded to Red Dead Redemption. Great game, but some bugs and control issues make it far from perfect.

    • QuizmasterBos

Still, we could go lower. According to Metacritic, the Escapist gave it the lowest score of 80, as well as a French website called Gameblog.

Edge themselves gave it a 90, so we can see that this game is doing very well for the critics. Check out some reviews yourself:

47 reviews and not one lower than 80, it makes Super Mario 3D World one of the best scored games of all time. I’m looking forward to playing this next week.

  • Gameonfool

gives the game some decent exposure

  • Javy G

So beautiful! I need to own this!!!

  • Richard Collard

Okay Nintendo, you win. -Sold- If only this game could’ve been available at launch, then Nintendo probably would’ve sold more Wii U’s during 2013. Oh well, better late than never.

    • Ducked

I think they should have just released Wind Waker HD back in February to give people games to play. It wasn’t the launch that hurt them, it was the seven months Nintendo went without releasing any 1st-party titles for Wii U.

      • Nathan Verbois

They didn’t even start working on Wind Waker HD until around that time, so they wouldn’t have been able to release it, but your point is valid. πŸ™‚

Still, looking at the brand spanking new consoles coming out right now, they will have a similar problem, though probably not as pronounced as the Wii U.

        • Ducked

I know, but they should have developed it earlier πŸ™‚

        • Denvy

Not quite. They already have full fledged 3rd party support.

          • Nathan Verbois

Sure, but what big third party titles coming out on next-gen are solely next-gen? The difference between current and next, is not nearly as obvious as in past generations. I was absolutely going to be one of the first to pick up a PS4 as I’ve been obsessed with it since February (I sold my X360 and bought back into the PS3), but then a few weeks ago, I realized I had way too many games to go through on my PS3 from my PS+ and that there wasn’t any real need to upgrade just yet as the best games are still current gen. I don’t really want to own a whole bunch of consoles, so while I will pick up a PS4 in a few months, I’ll have to hold on to my PS3 possibly indefinitely.

If I feel that way, then I imagine a great many others are going to feel that way, as I eat, sleep and breathe games. I ended up picking up the Wind Waker bundle instead. The Wii U’s Gamepad stands out from the crowd. I could pick up another PS Vita (I sold my previous one), but that’s 200 bucks and doesn’t give me access to Nintendo’s games. Now with my Wii U, I can go and back and play all of the amazing Wii titles from Nintendo I missed out on, so there’s that as well. People can say the Wii U isn’t next-gen, but Super Mario 3D World is ridiculously pretty, neutering much of that statement’s potency.

          • Denvy

I was more talking about how the Wii U is constantly overlooked for big titles by 3rd parties. This won’t happen with the others. In addition, it doesn’t appear there is a whole lot of interest in developing exclusive content either. Hoping that changes. However, I completely agree that SM3DW will be a massive hit and proof positive it’s worth owning the system. My worry is beyond. Anyway, pun intended for your neutering comment? haha πŸ™‚

          • Nathan Verbois

I think all Nintendo needed, other than a steady stream of great content, was to perfectly time one of the best games ever made coming out and getting tons of coverage at the same time as the new consoles are out and getting the types of reviews that new consoles these days, always get: “Great, with loads of potential if the flaws get fixed, but not at all necessary right now especially considering the games.” It makes for a very compelling pendulum-like masterstroke in their direction. Already, a couple of new articles from tech sites have come out favoring the Wii U. Even though it won’t dissuade ardent fans of MS or Sony, it will help possibly persuade parents and more casual gamers of the Wii U. Only time will tell, but I’m willing to bet Nintendo does well enough that certain developers and publishers might have to take a second look at the platforms they’ll release on.

And yes, that was a deliberate pun. πŸ˜‰

          • ICHI

There is a problem with that happening too though and has been a problem with Nintendo home consoles since the N64. Nintendo’s games are so good, the third party offerings often look crap by comparison and then don’t sell that we’ll anyway. Nintendo make games like Mario Kart and Brawl to be timeless in their application of fun where as other companies just want you to be occupied until their next big game πŸ™

        • ICHI

Those release day games review scores are looking a little poo and a lot of sites are saying they’re nice machines with nothing to play on them. I said ages ago not being backward compatible would hurt them and it’s looking to be true. I was an early xbox360 adopter and that had nothing to play that was worthwhile until chromehounds was released.

          • Nathan Verbois

Speak for yourself. I was having a blast with Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo. Rare still made Rare games at that point, but most Xbox users (or at least the critics) were not as interested. Still, your point is very valid despite my difference of opinion on the 360.

          • ICHI

Oh goodness no lol. I thought those two games were heresy, everybody who made rare great had left and gone to free radical at that point anyway πŸ™‚

          • Nathan Verbois

To each their own. I loved ’em. =)

      • Andreas Sunde

They wouldn’t have made WWHD at all if it wasn’t for 3rd parties breaking their promises. They made it to give us something to play at all.

        • Ducked

The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 were suppose to be launch games, and then Spring releases, so you can’t really blame them.

      • Richard Collard

To be frank, the only launch titles that interested me were Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U. WWHD doesn’t appeal to me right now, but perhaps when the price is lower, as I already have the version for gamecube. But 3D World, Pikmin 3, DKC:TF, and Mario Kart 8 will be mine! (When the latter two are available).

    • val berger

If they would have showed off a trailer at launch, scheduling its release for Summer 2013 and then delaying it a few months back until now, that would have worked out by far better. I hate delay stategy like this, but in this case, people would have thought completely different if they would’ve known better what to expect. In that case, they would have revealed the game together with the system launch, which would have triggered more people to buy the console. When they actually revealed it in summer, the WiiU was already known for having bad software support, so it’s announcement didn’t help sell the system too much.

If you look at the XBox One and PS4-Announcements of Summer and how bad the Softwarelineup is now, Nintendo would obviously do a better job in not ALWAYS being so honest with us πŸ˜‰

  • AAAkabob

Impressed that they would do this instead of the newer consoles.

    • NintendoNoob

Well Nintendo wins game wise this holiday season. New Psone games suck

  • Guest

And even more publicity for the Wii U!! Just last night out of all the video’s I watched on Youtube that where game related I saw an add for Wii U at least 5 to 6 times! On top of that I have seen at least 3 Wii U commercials on several channels, now this. Yeah I think Nintendo is doing great with advertisement and it seems to be getting better and better as the weeks go by. I predict a large surge in Wii U’s install base by the end of the year. Maybe not 3-4 million Wii U’s but I predict at the very least a million Wii U’s to be sold by January.

  • LevenThumps

This game looked great from the trailers, so I’m glad that the game got good scores, but not that surprised.

  • Luciano

Is this magazine has a web browser edition?

  • TheKingJoseph

I wonder how much nintendo paid for that? I like how the magazine takes a shot against the wii u and nobody realizes: The reason to own a wii u is now, meaning the wii u was never worth owning before. lol RIP wii u

    • Relick

If anything that proves Edge was not paid for this, as they obviously had a stance that the WiiU was not worth it until now, however Nintendo has done such a good job it is now worth getting in their opinion.

      Long live the WiiU!

    • C4

I think the _one_ game that’s worth buying the console and spending 300+ $ is what was missing for the Wii U. NSMBU, Pikmin does not make people buy the console immediately, even if these are great games. Mario 3D World fully ticks the “system seller” box IMHO… so implying it’s the first true system seller is probably right.

But as you said the “the reason to own…” is an unnecessary headline.

  • Jared Garcia

A re-invigorated console war has begun. I’ve seen many articles stating that this gen is the first since the 5th (N64, PS1, and Saturn) that there was a clear difference in console visions by their companies. Nintendo’s about player interaction, Sony’s graphical horsepower, and Microsoft wants a centralized entertainment center. Let the games begin.

    • Merrfn

Sony is going for horsepower? Wut?

  • Boss Hoss

I don’t know i’m still not sold on it just yet.

  • Moreck

Yay! Good press πŸ˜€ I can’t wait to play this!

    • Rinslowe

Good press comes along because the power of being phenomenal is too much to go against, lol. (in this case SM3DW really is looking to deliver)

  • That is a very good sign, showing that everybody will enjoy this game, and hopefully atrract people not just this game, but also to the console itself!

  • Jeffrey Debris

I truly hope this will help the sales of the Wii U. I really do!

    • Denvy

I think it will, at least in the short run. Mario is a system seller for sure. I’m sure we’ll see #s rise

      • Prince Marth IV

I read that last part,”…we’ll see hash tags rise,”…I spend too much time on Twitter.

  • Jon

kind of a kick in the face to the new console launches I think. It is Mario on the cover, and not the Xbox one or the PS4 which were both released this month.

    • ThugSmokerzOnly

It’s a kick in the face and I love it. I’m kind of tired of this back and forth xbox and playstation war. Nintendo just Dominated the whole cover!! With Mario getting score of 9.3 and up!! Yea I got a PS4 but I’ll definitely be taking a break starting Friday.

      • Jon

yeah, I have a friend who got a PS4 and got one game with it and beat it already. Now he is just waiting for Mario and Zelda tomorrow to play

      • Jelle Knibbe

    • Chronic Gang

Well mario is the king of games

      • ThugSmokerzOnly

        RED ALBUM!! LOL! Sick album

  • jjbredesen

    This is awsome πŸ˜€

Takes the atension away from the new consoles and promotes the Wii U!

  • Ducked

While Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Lego City Undercover, The Wonderful 101, ZombiU, Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, and LoZ: The Wind Waker HD give people a reason to buy a Wii U.

Super Mario 3D World will be that #1 reason as I said months ago. The Wii U software right nows destroys the PS4 and Xbox One launch line up.

At $299, a much more affordable price, a unique gameplay experience, and upcoming games like Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros U, and Bayonetta 2 just being the few announced games for the Wii U. I don’t see why consumers wouldn’t purchase a Wii U.

    • William Cole

So much logic here but so many people don’t reason with logic. Give the Wii U time and I think more people will pay attention to it. If they pull off a new a masterful Zelda, the rest is history for them.

      • Nathan Verbois

While Zelda is a much loved series (and my favorite of all time), Mario games have sold more as a series and more on an individual basis than Zelda games, due to generally being more accessible, most likely.

  • Too_old_for_gaming

Love my Wii U and love Mario, ps4 or xbox one don’t appeal to me – only average exclusive launch games + couple crappy PC ports (scripted and nothing new). Forza 5 is the only game I’d love to play. Go on Nintendo πŸ™‚

  • lonewolf88

im going to wait to get super mario 3D world and wonderful 101 for christmas my wallet died quick this year between buying a 3ds, 3ds games wii U games…

  • Justagamer

Nintendo is kicking butt again..Mario has brought Wii U in the next level of gaming

  • Mario

Wow! Nintendo is stepping up their game!

  • Rinslowe

This is great news. Every little bit of exposure!

I sincerely hope Nintendo takes full advantage of any momentum created by SM3DW and rides it all the way to Feb/ Mar with DK TF….
Then onto Kart (hanging out for this game bad), Smash. But ultimately I would (kill o_0) for X and Bayo 2…

+ Watchdogs, Project Cars, Fast Racing Neo… It’s shaping up to be a phenomenal 2014 for Wii U owners of all tastes!

  • Gregg

Holy Heck, response to this game has been Amazing. Nintendo does it again.

  • Krzysztof

At the momet SM3DW is 5th best selling game in Amazon US, topping COD Ghosts for 360. In Japan … 2nd! I’m well impressed.

  • William Cole

I really wanted to hate this game with all my being but darn, it grew on me so! I’m glad it’s getting great scores. It looks like a lot of fun. I just hope the next time Nintendo does a multiplayer 3D Mario, you can play with some one online. Ya know, for those who are “only children”.

    • Why would you want to hate it??

      • majora :D

        I guess he’s a sony/microsoft fanboy…

        • Just doesn’t make sense.. I mean there are games and game types I do not like to play but I do not go out wanting to hate them. I simply do not play them and move on with my life.

          • majora :D

I agree, but on the other side there are people bent on hating something just because it poses a “threat” to what they love

          • That is the primary reasons people hate on something else. Just shows you how sad the haters are that come here just to hate on Nintendo. They are so threatened by Nintendo that they have to come to a Nintendo News site just to hate on it and try and make people think they are telling the “truth”. You know like they are some sort of TruthTeller

          • William Cole

Guys, grow up. I’m a Nintendo fan at heart! I own every main damn Mario Game. I was just saying that I didn’t want to leave the Galaxy world so much that I wasn’t willing to go this direction again. You guys are something sad. I don’t even own an Xbox for that matter whoever said I was a Sony/Microsoft fanboy.

          • William Cole

Thank You! That’s what I was getting at. Thanks for TRYING to understand.

      • William Cole

Once again, because I loved Galaxy so much! You guys should really think before you speak. Did you even read past the “I really wanted to hate this game so much”?

  • Derek D’Arcy

if the wii u can knockout one must have game every few months its will do Fine, ps4 and xbox will sell more but i find with their approach is 10 essential games a week its to much and it just leaves people empty pocketed and dissented to quality i think

  • Mike A

A lot of great games to play on my Wii U now. If only my wife would let me buy them all and more importantly the time to play them. So glad it soon be Christmas because Super Mario 3D World going make an awesome gift for my son.

  • Leo

  • starwars360

Go to and find every gaming website review scores for this game. Amazing and masterpiece game already!!!

  • starwars360

Best Super Mario game since Super Mario Galaxy series, best next generation game, best next generation graphics, best Wii U title, one of best games ever made, one of best games in 2013, Game of the Year 2013 contenders, one of best Super Mario series and one of best Gaming Entertainment!!!

  • Adrian Byrne

looks like Nintendo have pulled off a fantastic game (i cant wait) now they just need to let the masses know its out there and i don’t mean just one random advert during the uk xfactor, they need to sell the s**t out of it

    • Nate

So far I’ve seen more commercials for free mobile games (didn’t even know they did commercials for these).

  • InterTreble

Absolutely astonishing average! If people will go for an empty PS4 (where are the GAMES???) instead of this piece of art, I really don’t know what Nintendo has to do… Perhaps pulling the leg to the customers, promising everything and bombing with ads. But this is $ony’s and M$’s behaviour, not Nintendo’s. And people want to be stupid, and believe to the ads and media, instead watching with their own eyes…

  • CEObrainz

    Mario, making every furry’s dream a reality….

  • Joey

i cannot wait for this game but i do not like Official Nintendo Magazine UK score of 93 but it sounds 98 or 100 that’s just what i think…Cannot Wait….

    • TheMoeses

yeap, just remember: that in any videogame magazine there is nintendo’s haters, thats why the 93.! but this game is for 99 or 100.

  • Nintendoplaystation

I like that “next generation launch special” with a big picture of mario on the cover.

  • iamserious

Funny people are complaining about this game “only” receiving a low 90’s score. I’m more concerned with this game getting perfect scores as no game I’ve ever played has been perfect. Anything in the 90’s and up is just wonderful for this game! Go Mario!

  • Kevin Malone

Do not ask for whom the mustache brings glory, for it brings glory to Mario.

  • ICHI

I need to finish all of this semesters Uni work by next Friday or I’m going to fail, and whose going to believe it was Mario’s fault?!

  • ICHI

Is the US getting the Mario mega bundle as I think that will sell systems

  • RandroidRampage

Only reason to buy Wii U? There are plenty of reasons to own one. I’ll name a few Pikmin 3, LOZ Wind Waker, Nintendo Land, etc.

  • shaun

I wonder if I can download it 9pm west coast tongiht since it’ll be midnight on the east.. this always works for itunes

  • Josiah Parsons

    9 on Gamespot
