If you’re like me and you grew up in the 80s or 90s, your first love in video gaming probably came about on a Nintendo console. Nintendo dominated the early video game market, pushing rival Sega out of business. It wasn’t until the massive success of the PS2 that Nintendo even saw a threat to its reign as king of video games. That’s why it’s a sad state of affairs when a mobile game like King’s Candy Crush produces more revenue in a single quarter than all of Nintendo’s releases combined. To be fair, the Q1 2014 quarter was sparse for Nintendo in terms of both the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, but this is what gaming has come to today. Candy Crush grossed more money than all Nintendo games combined. Sure, that’s easy to rationalize by saying “Well Nintendo didn’t have any big releases and Q4 is where they make all their cash,” but the fact remains, that’s a mind-blowing thing to be able to report. They’re not ahead by a small margin either, King is making 56% more money than Nintendo. King has mentioned in the past that Candy Crush generates 2/3 of their revenue, so, that game alone is beating everything Nintendo did. The low barrier beg for money as soon as you run out of time games that plague the mobile sector have become a much better profit generator than thoughtful, well put together games like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It’s irritating to watch as a person who is interested in the industry and follows it daily, as it feels as though everything that makes games enjoyable is being dumbed down to chase this crazy free to play fad. No matter how much market research is done that shows only a very small portion of gamers of those free to play games spend money, it’s insane to see publishers like EA and Ubisoft put micro-transactions in their $60 games like Dead Space and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Nintendo even dabbled in the micro-transaction business to dubious results, as Bravely Default offered a monetary way to acquire special points in the game. There’s no study on how successful that model is, but it’s a disturbing trend to see, nonetheless. While King is currently the “king of mobile” with its hit Candy Crush, remember not too long ago it was Rovio who sat on the crown with its Angry Birds franchise and before mobile even came along, Zynga was pooping up the gaming space with its Facebook hit Farmville. Hopefully Nintendo will fare better this quarter with the release of Mario Kart 8 and E3 news on the way. local_offer candy crush Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Nintendo loses patent appeal, ordered to pay Nintendo was brainstorming about Switch when Bob Wilkerson Is that because of all the sheep that pay to unlock levels? Gotta love those microtransaction games. They are good for some quick money but rarely have any staying power and are eventually faded out and forgotten Phoenix Maybe I wish this microtransaction game would fade out sooner. Marioman21 I do not think it will fade out until people stop buying micro transactions. So not hopeful. Alexander Kleinwechter Answer me this, Who the hell cares? So what if they did more money, doesnt mean that its gonna effect anything! Ducked You must care because you clicked the article and commented on it. matthew garcia All I have to say is holy shit. All those candy crush people use to be Wii players. Now we no where all those people went bistricky All Wii Players ???? Hahahaahaha ….. that’s rich. Quick poll ….. who here was (or is) a Wii player and also now has King’s Candy Crush on their mobile? Perfecto-Geek Wii player here…never once played Candy Crush. matthew garcia Ok Wii u in the same time frame has sold significantly less then the original wii. So what I’m saying is the market changed and wii u lost all those extra sales. Not even just extra sales but a crap load of sales bistricky Lets put it this way ….. THE MAJORITY of people who have Candy Crush or other mobile games on their iphone etc ….. NEVER owned a gaming console or anything with gaming before they started playing free Facebook games or “freetoplay” mobile games ( we are talking about tweens to senior citizens) ….. In other words sales of the Wii U or Nintendo’s profit margin can not be directly connected to the profit of Candy Crush games ….. matthew garcia Ha lol how do u know who owned a console. I’m just gonna say the market changed cuz there is no real way to pin point it bistricky How do I know …. beyond plain old fashion stats ……. look around you ….. who is playing the mobile games …… I am right now …. my mom ….. my aunt ….. my grandma ….. my twin 8 year old cousins (this is seen in most every households and schools everywhere) ….. none of them cared to play on any gaming consoles …. the non-gamers …. the non-traditional gamers ….. are the population most mobile games are aimed to and for. matthew garcia I play mobile games but the good full fledged games. I got the baulders gate remake on android for 10 dollars. Excellent game. Going back to consoles though those once upon time Wii gamers went somewhere though bistricky Ya Baulders Gate is good …. but as you said “going back to consoles” here is what I meant ….. many wii gamers went nowhere …. they are still wii gamers …. never bought any other systems (including the Wii U) …. it is for this reason, I can not rationally call the Wii a fad (cause it is not). The Wii gamer did not all flock over to the mobile market exclusively making King games and others super rich and thus sucking the life outta’ Nintendo. Hey Matthew ….. we might not agree on this one (as we have agreed on other topics) but appreciate the fair debate on it ….. I just think I am right LOL ….. meaning, this entire article is NOT news for Wii U Daily …. ha! Cheers to you. Daniel Gonzalez Exactly. There is no way of knowing if these Candy Crush fans have owned or do own a console. People are grasping straws now. Daniel Gonzalez “Lets put it this way ….. THE MAJORITY of people who have Candy Crush or other mobile games on their iphone etc ….. NEVER owned a gaming console or anything with gaming” Where are these sources that back up your claims? How do you know that these Candy Crush gamers haven’t owned a console before? Making up stuff from the top of your head isn’t going to support your claims. bistricky True that. Food for thought. So you got me to see if I could track down any substantial data to prove or disprove that part of my post. And in doing so, I recognize that I was too bold in my statement. I stated the majority but in the latest report entitled “Game Market Sector Report: Smartphones & Tablet Gaming 2013” by Research Firm NewZoo …. it was found that 78% of those who play Candy Crush also play games on a gaming console (at least once). So, there you have it. This data is based on totals from 18 countries. No indication if these Candy Crush players owned a gaming console but we can infer that they likely do. I stand corrected. Cheers 😀 smithy501 Everything you say is negative against Wii u ,, I bet if it wasn’t for Facebook candy crush wouldn’t have had that much ,,, and no matter wat you say you cannot deny that I hate candy crush its like a refined columns/Tetris ,, ,, but Facebook has most likely made candy crush what it is,, matthew garcia Not everything. I got Mk8 this morning and called in sick to work so me and my little sister could play all day Yuma Tsukumo You’re right on the market changing. Look at last week, the Wii u outsold the PS4 in Japan BEFORE MARIO KART HAS EVEN BEEN RELEASED. The market is changing everywhere and we know the Wii U isn’t doing as well as it should but it’ll do well when games are there. Same goes for the PS4 and Xbox one. Christian Schoff F*** that game. Capt. Smoker Raises hand, 100% Wii player, no candy crush installed on any of my devices Mario Wii player talking here. I don’t even own a mobile device. Capt. Smoker Once upon a time I could say that… but people are annoying and made me get one, comes in handy for music and shopping so I’m good 😉 LordiMcKill I enjoyed playing with my Wii (no matter how obscure that sounds, i bet we all did) but was mainly in it for premium quality Nintendo exclusives not Shovelware, that’s for Candy Crush players. And no, i am not one of those. Daniel Gonzalez Watch out, that may offend the fans here. Lol. Oh wait….too late. Ahh well. 😛 matthew garcia Oh crap I think your right. I apologize to whoever’s blood pressure I’m raising. I’m just simply saying the market changed. My bad guys darkcreap No, not really. A friend of mine is what you would call a traditional gamer: He likes games like Final Fantasy, Bayonetta, Darksiders, Tekken, Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, Xenoblade… and Candy Crush. He is not one of those “blue ocean” people who never played a console before the Wii. It’s just another game. I don’t feel any sympathy for King, but not because they make games for a broad public, but because they copy without any remorse game formulas that existed decades ago and relabel them like they had had the idea. And by copy I don’t mean “inspire”, I mean copy the game mechanics and change the aesthetics. bistricky Man, why you dissing someone for commenting “who the hell cares”? He cares to read the articles posted on Wii U Daily, and does care to comment on Wii U Daily …. but as I doesn’t care how much money King games made. Alexander Kleinwechter I cared about the people on this site, some people do get affected by it. i just want them to realise its not really a big deal as some people think it is :3 matthew garcia It’s not a matter of whether people care or not it’s about these little nobody developers who are able to take somethin from nothin and make something that generated more money then Nintendo. Congrats on candy crush even though I don’t even care about that game. Alexander Kleinwechter thats more of a grand scheme topic, that means its the millions of people who have a smartphone. they just have some games on it to have fun sometime, its kinda obvious. The regular consumer doesnt care if they have lower quality products. they just want to have fun sometime, and i love my wii u, but i dont think they want to waste alot of money on a console, if they never even play. Daniel Gonzalez I think you mean casual consumer. matthew garcia Well they were buying the Wii like crazy so people will spend more money. I can’t talk for people all I can say is there not coming to the Wii u. I’m sure there are many reasons why Christian Schoff Make something from nothing? Candy Crush is a 98% copy of Candy Swipe. Daniel Gonzalez Speaking of copying…the Wiimote’ technology seems strangely enough like the Powerglove(which wasn’t developed by Nintendo). Interesting, isn’t it? Didn’t I also mention that the DS isn’t the first to have touchscreen gaming? Game.Com predates it by 6 years. 😛 LordiMcKill Yeah and what happened to the Powerglove and this Game. Com thing cos I’ve never heard of it? Daniel Gonzalez Powerglove most Nintendo fans should at least had heard of. Basically it died out early on because it didn’t work as well as it should. Technology just wasn’t there. It’s an idea that was ahead of its time. Game.Com on the other hand, suffered from lack of support from third parties. 1st party I’m not sure about, because I never had one growing up, and only used it a few times due a friend of mine having one. Another major drawback was that the games didn’t really look that spectacular. Just think of the old Tiger Electronic handheld games that people bought in the 80’s through the 90’s. While it was poorly executed unlike the DS six years later, it is the first handheld out on the market that used a touchscreen. If you want to know more, going through google, you’ll find plenty of info about it. There’s a lot of other devices out there that many fans today aren’t even aware of. It’s worth checking out. matthew garcia Success is success. Same thing with angry birds and mine craft. Let’s just say these games don’t have big developer names like Nintendo slapped on them. So like I said congrats candy crush Ducked Well it should come to some fans concern that a mobile game made more money last quarter than a 18 billion dollar company who has two gaming systems out. But meh, I won’t disagree with you. Darius well there are more more people with smartphones than gaming consoles and candy crush is pretty popular so its not that shocking…unless you’re seriously without thought Mr. J Really? You’re telling me you care about complete strangers on a video game website? Wow….. audi lover Better man than you or myself obviously Daniel Gonzalez Yeah….I find that unlikely. Sounds like a good cover up to me. It’s obvious that the article offended his fanboy pride. 😛 Mr. J Lol RockieOllie Homie you talk the truth! Yousif Alromaithi I came here to see what the people say. Candy Crush games sucks because Angry Birds is better. DC777 We shouldn’t worry about it too much. It’s a simple game for people who don’t play games anyway. It only makes money because people suck and can’t get past a level. All those I know who do play it are women who wouldn’t be caught dead playing any console game which they consider “too complicated”. Jack5221 People who spend money on Candy Crush fail at life. “Sean” jjbredesen Well it does tell us how fucking shit the video game industry is becoming! Magnus Eriksson But if to be honest. Nintendo are part of this problem, especially after making the Wii U into a indie only product. Also third parties are shooting themselves in the foot now. If they want console biz to survive they must renew themseves and invest a little more than they had to do before. “Sean” jjbredesen Yup, i think they industry is becoming more and more of a PC industry as consoles are becoming more and more PC’s and i do think that eventually there will not be consoles, just PC’s or Steambox’s. WarioForever lol, candy crash is stupid, It’s not even close to Nintendo. And yes, Nintendo still dominates the video games, nintendo is still the KING! “Sean” jjbredesen In terms of video game quality yes, but not in terms of everything else xD LordiMcKill The moment i read his comment I thought the exact same thing. WarioForever You think Sony owns the video game world? No, even if they succeded with the consoles (because PS2 can play the movies, and back then, the video players were expensive, and PS3 is a video game console and it can play Blurays=in other words, Playstations are more and more becoming like a computer, while Nintendo has kept the tradition of home consoles) Do you think Microsoft owns the video game world? LOL no. Why? 1. Nintendo has the most memorable and the most famous video game character, Mario. 2. It has the best selling video games, Wii Sports, Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart Wii. 3. Nintendo has made the best video game of all time, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 4. Best selling handhelds 5. Best ranked home consoles (and nostalgia) So yes, Sony nor Microsoft aren’t the kings of video games, Nintendo is, was and always be. “Sean” jjbredesen Sorry, but nobody is the “king” of video games, and all the companies have there faults. Sony is near bankrupt, and they don’t have that many great IP’s, but they do make fantastic hardware and have a solid online infrastructure etc. and are good at support 3rd parties etc. Microsoft also does a great job with 3rd parties and have some great 1. party IPs such as Halo, and they work really hard to make those games great. But they do need to work on how they build there hardware, because all of the Xbox’s have had lots of problems. Nintendo has god the greatest library of 1. party content, and they have a fantastic legacy of creating fantastic content. They also make fantastic consoles, but they are not that good at reading the market. They are a bit backwards with there online etc. and they are losing a lot of ground to mobiles in the handheld market. Sony is also having problems with the Vita because of mobiles, and 3DS despite selling fantastic is the worst selling handheld Nintendo has ever made. Same goes for Wii U it is so far the worst selling primary home console system they have made. They still make fantastic games, and they could jump back next gen, but right now they are not perfect either. They all balance each other out, so no reason to hate on anyone. Competition is healthy for the industry and i hope they all do well. Blindly saying that a company is kind is a bit to much of a fanboy comment in my book, but i respect your opinion. GmailIsDown i don’t think the entire video game industry is doing very well. it is no where near the disastrous crash decades ago but still the outlook is not optimistic. i don’t want any of these companies to go down. WarioForever Ok, but I also think that Sony must unite with Nintendo. Let Sony makes hardwares, and Nintendo games and a design of harwares. Remember Nintendo Playstation? Daniel Gonzalez Nah, I say let them be independent and make their own hardware and games. If they reunited, that would take away competition. That isn’t good for the industry nor is it healthy. Sony and Nintendo’s past, is just that. Nintendo has it’s problems too, and I’m sure you can name them if you weren’t being biased. Sony has plenty of quality games of their own. Of course, quality varies by opinion, so there is no fact behind them. Simple as that. Daniel Gonzalez What he said, is just opinion, but how he expresses his opinion, clearly shows his fanboyism. It’s silly to think there is a king of video games. Each company has their faults, as you said. Well said there, jj. “Sean” jjbredesen Thanks 🙂 readypembroke Hey Sony calls their systems a “computer entertainment system”! Daniel Gonzalez Sounds quite biased to me. When people bring up who are the kings of video games, it’s based on opinion. In these sorts of conversations, it just comes down to subjectivity. Yours is well noted, but it isn’t based on fact, however. ~OMEGA~ look, Nintendo “owns” the video game world, just about as much as Sony an microsoft does….. yes they have a lot of good things to their name.. doesn’t mean Microsoft and sony don’t… Daniel Gonzalez We are on a Wii U website. Kinda obvious people will favor Nintendo here. 😛 “Sean” jjbredesen Well that is true xD, but i would believe that most people are able to call a company king without any facts to back it up, but hey its the internet xD Just enjoy trying to make some sense out of stuff 😛 This site is surprisingly mutual though, and the conversations are a bit more sophisticated than on sites such as IGN. Not as many trolls etc. GmailIsDown i wouldn’t call it stupid. if you want to beat some of the later levels you need to plan ahead very carefully and be aware of the configuration of the entire board. it is almost like a chess match. it is actually different than those mindless casual games out there (and certainly different than Bejeweled which is more about reflex than strategy), though the depth of the game only starts to show after hundreds of levels. it appeals to the causal crowd as well, as they can try the same level for months without thinking and beat it just by luck and by using paid boosters. SolarShane13 If you don’t care, then WHY are you even asking that question? If you don’t care, don’t ask everyone else. Magnus Eriksson Candy Crush is a better game than Mario. So what? Mario still has its audience. Small children will allways like Mario. Dr Scoobie I have my doubts that candy crush is going to be popular for long. Moreck It’s a reflection on the sad state of the gaming industry, and where the public’s tastes are heading. It’s important because Nintendo can’t afford to appeal only to their current niche market (And yes, 5 million units sold is a niche market when the last gen sold 70-100+ million units.) Alex Hey everybody check out Honest Trailer Candy Crush. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S-A3CuNja1g URFTBOUND4LIFE . Ten years from now, nobody will care about Candy Crush Ducked I’ve spent $4,260 on Frozen Freefall because of transactions. Chad Kingsley Ok the solution is clear. Bring Candy Crush to the WiiU. I own a WiiU and love it. Never played Candy Crush though. But if that many people play it, then maybe they would play it on the WiiU when at home. Essentially bringing all those customers and revenue to Nintendo.. 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez I don’t think all those customers are going to buy a Wii U just for Candy Crush. Lol. Especially since they already have it on their mobiles, PC or tablets. bistricky Should anyone really care? I don’t think so. Will King be around in 20 years from now …. probably not ….. will Nintendo …. you betcha. On the day MK8 is released to the masses and gamers are also picking up a free game (like Pikmin 3), seems real gaming fun is with Nintendo. Christian Schoff I’m still not sure which game I want to get. @_@ Kuromad This messages says more about humanity in general than Nintendo or its games. FlashFan207 Yep, mobile gaming is a pretty simplistic way for people to play video games. But it’s so ridiculously easily accessible and after all, free is free. Most people just want something simple and fun to do when they’re bored, waiting in line, on a bus, in that crappy class you hate, or absolutely wherever. And we always have our iPhones with us, don’t we? The gaming community has taken a nosedive in complexity as a result, but these games are by no means less diverse or fulfilling than we had years ago. That said, I don’t see any comparison to Nintendo’s ongoing commitment to quality good fun on the App Store, or what’s currently on the Wii U’s competing systems. As Ashley said, we can only hope that with MK 8 and SSB on the way, millions more people can enjoy gaming like we have since our first Wii U was purchased. I’ve been playing Mario Kart 8 for hours now and have no desire to put down the GamePad. Happy gaming, all! JB That’s not terribly surprising. Of course as huge as those “free-to-play” games are, it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re doing better than a lot of video game publishers output. The question is more or less what’s the next big mobile game coup? Candy Crush is all well and good, but I’d be remiss to say that I don’t miss the good ol days of Tetris! palomino blue I don’t think they’re taking any business from Nintendo. I know a lot of people who play Candy Crush on their phone and wouldn’t buy a console even if smartphones didn’t exist. This is why people keep saying Nintendo needs to get into mobile games to take over that revenue. But it’s obvious that Nintendo cares more about making quality titles with some depth than to compromise their integrity with quick money making tricks. More power to Candy Crush for being able to make that kind of money off of what probably took a week to develop though. ActivesiN who the hell cares, candy crush is a fad, Nintendo is for life Daniel Gonzalez You must care if you decided to read it and comment. Lol. I don’t see the big deal of it really. While I don’t care for a game like Candy Crush. Gotta give credit where it’s due. It’s a good accomplishment for them. Fad or not. matthew garcia I congradulate Nintendo also for Wii’s success but obviously that was a fad since Wii u can’t even generate GameCube sales Daniel Gonzalez Well said. If we are going to call anything a fad, then might as well put Wii on that pedestal. Or any console or game for that matter. It’s just a simple case of fans getting offended over the success of a game they don’t feel deserves success. Shame really. matthew garcia Yes people should give credit where credit is due. Can’t win all the time smithy501 How does that count of caring he’s stating an opinion u must care for commenting back or making a comment in first place how is he any different , mobile gaming is simple and a pass time,,, ,, the people are sharing an opinion which is why a topic of this nature is introduced its about other people’s thoughts and impressions,, if this guy says he don’t care he’s speaking out a loud saying, I aint bothered aabout it and it don’t matter ,isn’t he not aloud to say that or not !!!! Ony Is John still alive ? Ashley is doing his job. Shane Michaels He’s actually playing Mario Kart 8. Ashley’s the only one who woke up from it’s spell. Isn’t that right, Ashley? gerb1977 Hopefully King is smart enough to put some of this money away. The odd’s of having a hit like this again isn’t very good. Of course revenue is only part of the equation. Profit is more important although I assume they probably made more profit too. Christian Schoff King are the Devil of the mobile gaming sector. They copy and pasted another game, changed the name and shape of the candies and then trademarked the words candy, and saga. Jon He abandoned the trademark application of Candy because he realized it would never work. paddle008 WHAT IS GOING ON? First we have John Kinsley writing positive articles and now Ashley has done this?! Christopher 並天道虫 I think Nintendo is in the game industry to make an impression, not just to generate money. Otherwise you would have seen Super Mario Candy Crush by now. Daniel Gonzalez All companies want to make an impression on the gaming industry. Even those who created Candy Crush. It may not be a game you like, but they made an impression nonetheless. Especially if they made a ton of money from it. Whether the impression is bad or good for the industry, is another story. Point is, it’s popular with mobile gamers, and it did what it was suppose to do. Make profit. Nintendo is no different. You need money to create these games and leave a strong impression and legacy in the industry. There’s a reason why Nintendo has billions saved up. Lol. Mario And I don’t think that they’re going broke soon if you know what I mean. Daniel Gonzalez Are you referring to Nintendo or the developers of Candy Crush? Lol. Mario Nintendo. Phoenix Maybe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uLA8uydDRM Zuxs13 It’s simple math really. 1.5 billion smart phones in the world, versus 43.3 million 3ds and 6.1 million Wii U. All it takes is King to sell to 1% of those smart phone owners and they will kill a Wii U or most 3DS games sales. This shouldn’t even be a point to make. Super Mario Bros U sold to ~67% of Wii U owners, where Candy crush has been DL to only 500 million times that’s less than 34% of all smart phones, doesn’t include the 500+ million tablets sold, apple TV’s, PC versions, or the repeat DL’s as people upgrade their devices. They are different markets it would be like comparing sales Numbers of how many people saw X-men in the movie theater VS how many of them will watch it on a Sony 2012-14 model Blu-ray players. matthew garcia Very good point Zuxs13 Thanks. Although this by no means Nintendo is doing well either. But this is an apple to oranges comparison. Magnus Gonzalez pretty sure you won’t find these types of articles on PS and Microsoft fan sites though. It’s crazy how much even Nintendo centric media plays a role in negativity towards its own interests. Or maybe it’s because they all just copy and paste each other’s articles Allvalve There has been a large outcry for Nintendo to drop the hardware business and go mobile. Although I think this is the wrong way to go I think it could help Nintendo’s business if they used the mobile route as a “virtual carrot”. Modern phones would be more than capable of running something like Mario Sunshine, make the first 10% of the game free, charge for every 10% update. This will make money, but more importantly win over non Nintendo fans and make Nintendo franchises household names again. The revenue from downloadable games would cover the cost of hardware development, meaning Nintendo could sell their home console for a good price right off the bat. Imagine Mum has played Mario Sunshine on her phone, Dad has completed Pikmin 1 while he should have been working, and kids Jimmy and Claire have been battling it out on Pokemon, and then they see an advert for a machine that runs hugely advanced versions of these new addictions, and you’ve got a captive audience. Throw in the ability to run these games for free through your Wii U on the TV if you’ve already downloaded them to your Iphone/Galaxy etc and you’ve re captured the market. And Nintendo becomes relevant again overnight. Jon um… so a game that takes substantially less money and has no many micro transactions made more money… And it’s a phone. EVERYONE has a phone matthew garcia Maybe Nintendo should get on some of this cell phone action Denvy What’s the point of this article? It’s hardly “news”, rather an observation. Let’s also think of companies who make more than Nintendo. That’s some real news too. Super Buu Dem micro transactions tho Capt. Smoker and dem adverts 😮 it’s time buu, blow up the planet 🙂 janco tianno We can see in this article that these casual games are not something new. If you consider Rovio’s Infrastructure, the number of Employees, Intellectual Property/Patents, Headquarters/Offices,well, they were having much more profit than Nintendo (and other companies) since 2009…They are addictive games that doesn’t need the same amount of developers, producers and testers like the big games. Only one success is enough to make them rich. The same thing applies to Developers. Look at the case of Flappy Bird. A single developer did that. A Small and Independent publisher helped him to release the game. It was earning US$50,000 a day with small ads. I’m not sure, but I think the best 3D Designer of Nintendo may not have a salary that comes close to that (but of course, he’s not by himself, he(/she) can easily work on many different companies). But yes… very soon those big game developers will have to enter on mobile market somehow… SamusPrime I picture this in Ashley’s mind. “How can I put a little cold water on what should be a fun day for Nintendo fans.” Bravo Ash! Capt. Smoker Mobile gaming is such a cancer, I hated the ds for most games aside from Dragon Quest IX and children of mana because most were sub par and nothing memorable, simple crap designed for a quick buck, and then came mobile developers, storming the market and making a mockery out of games, making meaningless games and gaining big profits, then it went up a notch, not only did pay to play come to the market, but the god awful advert trolling too, games are a work of art, and if tripe like candy crush saga is supposed to be what we’re moving towards, fuck that shit, I’d rather build a time machine and go back in the past, slowly killing off mobile developers one by one, have some 3rd degree coffee in your face! *splash* BIG MUG ATTACK *smacks mobile devs in the face with coffee mug* nobodys ruining gaming today 😉 *Chrono trigger theme plays out throughout the credits* bistricky @ Capt. Smoker …… your comment deserves 1000+ up votes. Absolutely correct. For an article that never should have made it onto Wii U Daily …. which said that a mobile game beat revenues of all combined Nintendo games for a period (yet, others interpret this as a mobile game company being worth more then all the money in Nintendo … and other claiming thins means the Wii was a fad …. wtf?? I think they must be playing those cheap mobile games too much ’cause they have no idea what a fad means) …… and all this fun on the big MK8 day!!!! Capt. Smoker aha thanks ^^ think the writers at Wii U Daily are pretty much the same as these mobile devs in one way or another, mostly because they post dribble like this and make money off it, think they could all do with a caffeine punch, not sure why Ashley is writing about this sort of stuff though, she’s pretty pro mobile gaming, at least I’d guess so, she always pops up with a *top review* on plenty of games on the playstore, ha ha I probably shouldn’t say negative stuff about her and the site though, last time I did, I had a lot of angry people on my case giving me a list of why Ashley and Wii U Faily are so great 😀 ha, I really don’t think we can put mobile devs in the same category as Nintendo, their more like Facebook, in the sense were it’s just general everyday consumption, I think it should probably stay like that, rather than people in the gaming industry state that it’s the future, considering piss poor android console sales, I’d doubt it, android “gaming” just can’t be compared to console gaming, *sigh* android gaming ain’t all bad though, after all, at work, I played snes and ps1 emulators on my phone with a wii remote at my desk lol, it’s just a shame these android devices take from the console market now, which means less games 🙁 Daniel Gonzalez I don’t play android games myself, but I do use emulators on them to play SNES and even N64 games. It has it’s good uses and is good for on the go. The article doesn’t bother me at all, because this is usual stuff you expect at WiiUDaily. It’s about the clicks to create ad revenue, and it worked well. It’s shameful, but I think that’s the last thing WiiUDaily worries about, and it shows. Lol. matthew garcia Lol i use the emulators as well Capt. Smoker lol I love the emulators and the wii remote app to use my wii remote to play them, god bless the Wii U, it helped me set if up, I use the stand that came with the gamepad and the wii remote I got with wii party u lol, only… I upgraded on my contract and because of Android kitkat, my wii mote wouldn’t work anymore 🙁 sad for ages, then I rooted and used my ps3 controller from my Vita tv instead ha, saved by my consoles so many times, now I’m playing persona 3 portable on my mobile like a boss 😉 I was never gonna buy one of them moga pro controllers, they look so daft >.<' matthew garcia I completely agree but I do enjoy playing the final fantasy remakes on mobile. Keeps me busy on my lunch break at work “Sean” jjbredesen Final Fantasy, GTA remakes etc. are not a problem, and they are fine to play, but stuff like Angry Birds, Flappy Birds, Candy Crush etc. just destroy gaming. matthew garcia Yeah I agree but it’s not the games it’s people in general that are destroying it. We all have a choice and that’s what people choose. Maybe people are just tired of paying 60 bucks for games. Maybe it’s consoles fault as well. “Sean” jjbredesen Yeah that is true, and it is perhaps more the consumers than the devs, sad to see how stupid humans are ;/ Mario Well that’s offensive. And true sadly. 🙁 Capt. Smoker Aye lol humans really are stupid, even dogs show no interest in flappy pappy bird saga “Sean” jjbredesen If i could upvote i would have upvoted that comment 10 000+ times! darkcreap I don’t fully agree. They are just new game mechanics. That does not destroy the industry. It is the bussiness model that does that. I mean, have you never played a shooter and enjoyed it? What about Counter Strike? It’s a perfect game for social gaming. You make teams, you go kill the others and then laugh at the situations. Call of Duty is fun too, but the immediate respawning the game has makes it a bit chaotic in team vs team mode. But even that is fun. Angry birds is not my cup of tea (I think I beat the first stage or two, but I am simply unable to beat more and I feel uninterestid), but it seems to me it has a solid mechanic. Maybe it will not be remembered for ages, since mobile gaming is a very aggresive market. One day a company is at the top, then they disappear. It’s like Game of Thrones, if you know what I mean. Even Flappy Bird can be a nice game. Never played it, but seemed to be challenging. Not a fulfilling gaming experience, but there are a lot of games that are very simple and not for that bad. Now, what really harms the industry is having a new installment of a franchise every year (Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed), which brings lack of innovation. Then you have overmilking your customers (by non-optional DLC, microtransactions), excessive budgets (not every game can be a hollywood movie), not risking in trying new game mechanics, etc. That is why I think indies are good for the industry. Sure there are too many right now (I agree with those that say that there is a bubble), but they bring a point of innovation and experimentation that is good. In the future of gaming there should be a space for indies and innovation separate from big first and third parties. In summary. I think it is bussiness models and customers themselves (to some extent) that kill the industry with unhealthy and unsustainable bussiness practices. “Sean” jjbredesen Yeah i agree with you on that, and i do support indies, i was just talking about those that copy stuff and just make shovelware for the money. I have enjoyed FPS’s yes, and i do play them, (mostly TF2), but i am getting tired of them now. They where fun and when MW2 came out i played it a lot, but now there is nothing new being presented. As for the mobile games: Angry Birds copied Crush the Castle, and stole just abou everything gameplay wize from it. Just added birds and piggs, so Rovio does not deserve any praise for the gameplay. They do make some good puzzles though. Flappybirds also copied Piou Piou and there is virtually no difference between the two, only that FB uses Mario pipes that are again stolen. And they make money of it. So the devs just steal from each other and that is what is annoying, there are good Indies such as Mojang witch have innovated the industry and they deserve all the praise they can get, but those that steal games and make money of it, they are a problem. There should be way stricter copyright rules when it comes to the mobile market. But yes, it all comes down to the consumers in the end. Capt. Smoker *rubs thumbs together and looks down at the floor* I guess… I’m kinda looking forward to the port of Dragon Quest VIII on mobile *rubs back of head* ha ha ha 😀 matthew garcia Ha lol. I been playing baulders gate on mobile also. We all know which mobile games your talkin about though and I agree with u Capt. Smoker Ditto….. *sounds like a hypocrite* ha, I like games like that on mobile, be cool if that was the future, decent ports and console quality games, can see google selling control pads in the future to compliment that sort of stuff matthew garcia I have a control pad for my phone it’s called a moga controller. Works pretty good Capt. Smoker I couldn’t bring myself to buy one, they looked a little after I saw my friend playing with his at work, I gave it a try, was comfy sure 🙂 but the triggers were hard to reach without brushing my knuckles on his phone, I just called him a poo head and went back to my desk with my mobile, gamepad stand and ps3 controller setup lol outta curiosity which one did ya have?, the one he had needed batterys and didn’t have a d pad, think that’s what made me eughhhh in disgust at it lollop matthew garcia I have the moga pro looks more like a 360 controller. Has a d pad also. There definitely not the best controllers but they do the job lol “Sean” jjbredesen Absolutely agree!! I can’t believe how bad this industry is becoming, in the beginning it was about good quality games and innovation. Creating new experiences etc. now its just about making hundreds of identical sequels that bring nothing new to the table, or creating games that in reality suck, but are made to be addicting and as a result everyone buys them, and then the greedy bastards add micro transactions and adds to make it all even worse! People are just buying anything that is trending regardless of if it is worth it or not, and devs just make ripoffs etc. just for the money, the result is that 90% of games released end up as shovelware, and the devs make a shit ton of money. Never played Candy Crush, and i have avoided it on purpose, same goes for all the other shit, not actually downloaded flappy birds either. Capt. Smoker I suppose the only good thing is they have a place now on mobile rather than litering the Wii and DS at full price, still…. makes me grit my teeth and clench my fist at how successful these nobody developers are Daniel Gonzalez Well, to be fair. Doesn’t every well known developer start off as a nobody? Lol. “Sean” jjbredesen True and there is nothing wrong about that, but once you can, you should try to make a proper game. Just look at Rovio, they where nobodies then they made Angry Birds and they made lots of money, instead of using that on making a new innovative game, they just made another Angry Birds and repeated. And consumers will just buy it, and that is what makes me angry. Daniel Gonzalez True. Though, the same can be said about Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, CoD, Battlefield, Uncharted, Killzone, and so on. While these are all games that people enjoy, they are repeated are they not? I do agree with what you’re saying jj, but at the same time, many companies are guilty of this. While Rovio does make the same game over and over, so have many others. I don’t see how it’s fair to blame the consumers, when they enjoy these games, and they have a right to. Blame the developers for feeding them the same thing, and not giving them something different. Or lack there of. My point is, the whole industry has been doing this for years. It’s certainly not a new trend. Lol. “Sean” jjbredesen That is also very true, and blaming consumers for enjoying a game is out of place, but do they really enjoy the game?? Did you enjoy flappy birds? Do you not wish that you never tried it? Do you ever wish you had never downloaded Candy Crush? I am sure most peoples answers are yes, they don’t really enjoy it, but they feel like they must. Mario etc. has had hundreds of sequels, but they have changed stuff a lot, and those games have tried to be good. I get your point, but i was targeting the mobile games, and how they are sort of forcing there games on the consumer. When you have played some angry birds you don’t feel satisfied you feel like you have wasted your time, or that is at least how i felt when i first tried it. When you play Zelda you don’t feel like you have wasted your time, or any other good game that has a lot of sequels. COD is of course just as bad as mobile games, and i was including those sort of games in the statement. I have a lot of friends that play COD, and when i ask them if they enjoy the game, they will say it is fantastic the first 4-5 days, and then it is terrible and they wish they never bought it. Then they play MW2 until the next COD game releases and it repeats, they don’t really enjoy it as much as you would think, it is more a social pressure of being a “hardcore” gamer, etc. I honestly have enjoyed a bit of COD, but after MW2 i never bought another game. Black Ops was not any better, and after playing a couple hours with my friends i had made my mind up on it, i also tried all the games that came after, and they just bored me, and even the people i know that are the most hardcore COD players are getting bored of it, but they still buy. It was not as bad before, the problem was there yes, but it is getting worse, and worse. Daniel Gonzalez Geez jj. Now you’re gonna make me do double the work responding to your post. >:/ (kidding of course) Okay let me just break this down as best I can. Let’s see… “That is also very true, and blaming consumers for enjoying a game is out of place, but do they really enjoy the game?? Did you enjoy flappy birds? Do you not wish that you never tried it? Do you ever wish you had never downloaded Candy Crush? I am sure most peoples answers are yes, they don’t really enjoy it, but they feel like they must. Mario etc. has had hundreds of sequels, but they have changed stuff a lot, and those games have tried to be good.” Do they enjoy the game? Well I’m going to have to say yes, because they play it, and they do put their money to investing in it. If their answer was yes, they didn’t enjoy it, then they wouldn’t play it. It’s not that they have no choice, they have a choice. If they hated it, they have the choice to stop playing it, and find something else that will make them happy. We shouldn’t assume that they aren’t happy. Right? 😛 While Mario sequels due change things around as the years went on, it is indeed, still a Mario game. So not to be mean about this, it’s no different than seeing a CoD sequel every year. Only difference between the two franchises, is the Mario has more innovation and there’s a lot you can do with it. CoD, is just your usual fps, run and gun game. Though, to be fair, there isn’t really much you can do with a game like that. So innovation to me, is limited with the fps genre. Just my two cents on it. “I get your point, but i was targeting the mobile games, and how they are sort of forcing there games on the consumer. When you have played some angry birds you don’t feel satisfied you feel like you have wasted your time, or that is at least how i felt when i first tried it. When you play Zelda you don’t feel like you have wasted your time, or any other good game that has a lot of sequels. COD is of course just as bad as mobile games, and i was including those sort of games in the statement.” Okay, so you were talking about mobile games. Fair enough. However, it’s not exactly forcing them on us, as we have a choice to buy them, or pass them up. It’s the same case I made for games like Mario or even Pokemon, these games are thrown at the consumer, but they have the same choices as the mobile gamers, either purchase it, or don’t. Personally, I’m not a Zelda fan, and I don’t see myself ever being one, but I have no issues with those that due. Which is the point, play what makes you happy. If Zelda holds your attention better than a mobile game, then power to you my friend. We are entitled to play what we enjoy and that’s cool to me. As for CoD, while it’s not as bad as mobile games are in my opinion, I do agree that it’s still a bad franchise. That’s more so because I got over the games themselves. 😛 “It was not as bad before, the problem was there yes, but it is getting worse, and worse.” Not really, I mean this isn’t any different compared to 30 years ago. You have your great games, and you have your poor quality games. Believe me, I’ve lived in the 80’s and can remember many horrible NES games that I’ve played. As I can remember many great games. Not much has changed. As for the rest of your post, I didn’t comment on because I basically agree with it. Just other things, I don’t fully agree on. Depsite all this, you started up a very good argument, and do enjoy respectable debates like this. Kudos to you, jj. Also, enjoy Mario Kart 8 if you have it yet. You’ll see me on the track at some point too. 😛 “Sean” jjbredesen Good read, and i can’t really argue against that, so lets just say that i agree, and think it do. Not yet got MK8 will get in a bit later as i still have a bit of School left and i need to make the money to buy it+ i don’t have internet on my Wii U for the next couple of weeks so not much point in buying the game yet, will eventually get it (next 2-3 weeks) hope to see you there 😀 And thanks for the good debate 🙂 Always respect that you are able to use good arguments without it becoming offensive etc. so kudos to you to 😉 Capt. Smoker Your not wrong, Rovios case is nothing new to add… nothing note worthy anyway, birds in brazil, birds in space, birds in space with star wars, birds in kartz, it’s always so bland, Nintendo are definitely guilty though too, I avoid the handhelds like the plague incase I get a duplicate game lol either that or a dud rpg I wish I could forget, then other consoles ae also guilty of the same rince and repeat cycle, fifa, cod etc, it’s a big complicated mess, in recent years I dumped Nintendo handhelds and Playstation home consoles because of it, these days I stick with the unique platforms that sell like crap, psp, vita… oh i dunno :/ wii u lol Capt. Smoker Aye, but at least they take a crack at making a good game, I can respect that, I remember when Atlus were like that, Rovio though.., *deep sigh*, how could sling shot pigs be so fun for everyone?, I look at my kid and his friends all laughing around his tablet playing it, I’ve never felt such shame! I HAVE NO SON! :’O darkcreap King copies mechanics from old games. Don’t condemn the games themselves, since they might be inspired on old games that might be simplistic, but were good. Do you know Bubble Witch Saga? It is one of King’s latest game. Well, Compare it to this: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/games/bustamove Paradoxically, they say they will sue who copies them. What a hipocrisy: http://blog.games.com/2012/09/11/bubble-witch-saga-copycatting-king.com/ Condemn King, not the games. They could be copies of great old games. The games aren’t guilty. King is. Mario ,,OK? 0_0 wober2 🙁 sooooo sad… Zanzama And how is that related to Nintendo? Might as well list every single company that did better than Nintendo as “news”. Zorpix Let’s be reasonable about this, guys. No one is better at spending money because they bought candy crush things as opposed to Nintendo things. People have every right to buy what makes them happy, and I think that’s what has happened here. Candy Crush just has a bigger audience, and people felt good about spending their money on it. If they felt good about it, who are you to judge what makes them happy? Good on you, Candy Crush 🙂 Daniel Gonzalez Well said, Zorpix. This site needs more people like you. 😛 Zorpix thanks XD bistricky What does this really have to do with Nintendo then and the Wii U …. and thus the Wii U Daily? Might as well list everything else King’s game Candy Crush had better revenues then. I have no problems clapping my hands for the success of Candy Crush …. but for anyone to take from this, that this is Nintendo “news” and thus Nintendo is the “cause” and/or “effect” of this (such as this proves Wii was a fad etc). Daniel Gonzalez This is Nintendo news(talking about the site). However, how often do you see news that has to do with the PS4, Xbox One, PC or other mobile games? This site has covered them before. So in this case, it makes plenty sense for this site to cover stuff like this. It’s basically the norm of WiiUDaily. That probably won’t change. Regardless, it’s just an article, and it isn’t killing anybody. Maybe the sites rep, perhaps, which has went bye bye long ago. Easiest solution to problems like this, don’t read or comment on them. Saves you time. Magnus Gonzalez This isn’t a Nintendo news site. It is a Wii U site. So if you own a Wii U or are contemplating a purchase, the news should be about the Wii U. Any mention of PS4, PC, Xbone that isn’t directly related to the Wii U should not be on here. This is a mobile game that probably relates more to the 3DS but still seems pointless. It’s just a way for these sites to spark discussion, outrage, and invite fanboys and trolls. Personally, I and many friends and family played Candy Crush and I found it amusing and fun to play in short spurts. Once I got to the point where it was obvious the game was not allowing me to get further without spending crazy money (I admit I spent about $10) I stopped. People shouldn’t bash the game or its developers. They should question why this is news for a Wii U site though Zorpix Don’t look at me, I didn’t write it ;P That being said, you’re right. I personally don’t get the correlation Googs That’s ridiculous. J_Joestar Is Bravely Default really considered Nintendo dabbling in Microtransactions? It is technically SE’s game. Mario He’s right. That was Square-Enix’s work. Not Nintendo’s. pandaman27 Without commenting on Candy Crush’s craftmanship, or lack thereof, I will say this: When you make combos in Candy Crush, it feels GOOD. The sound, visuals, and interaction between gamer and game is a very, very addicting combination. To use a recent Nintendo game for example, the e-shop exclusive Pokemon Trozi feels LABORIOUS. Getting combos in that game doesnt feel fluid, fun, or really anything other than stressful work. It is busy work, and needlessly middling. Imagine if Nintendo made a very short, fun puzzle game that included its famous IP’s? Imagine if Nintendo made an offshoot brand of games that ran concurrently with its console games? Nintendo could have its cake and eat it too, and yet, here we are. Guest Ubisoft published Dead Space? I’m pretty sure that was EA SolarShane13 If this doesn’t wake Nintendo up, then what will? Nintendo, please just do what SEGA is doing with the old sonic games. Show the market that your not outdated! SecretX don’t they make money from ads than from people? SecretX the article doesn’t mention were did it came from. Ultrasyd What is Candy Crush ? Nintendofreak bejeweled just change jewels for candy, n each try is a live so you either waith for it to replenish, ask for one or buy one Nintendofreak well most people on facebook play this all the friend invites to play oh the horror… while they could play bejeweled n dont have to ask for lives n shit, same thing happened with farmville n the game before that they will all be replaced by some new app sooner or later…. just like myspace was replaced by facebook , its just a fucking trend n everyone just wanna be like everybody else like their friends on facebook thats why they play this CaptinnDaGameMaster! This disgusts me. A bucnh of my friends don’t play any console but instead just play Candy Crush Saga or whatever crap. YET they consider themselves ‘gamers’. This sickens me. Daniel Gonzalez Why? Lol. It is a game. Perhaps not a game that you like, but it is a game nonetheless. I don’t care for those games, but I have no issues with people who do enjoy them. Whatever makes them happy. Despite what you may believe, these people play games, which makes them by definition, a gamer. Perhaps you should tell your friends that, and see what they may think of your opinion of them. Lol. LordYukYuk If anyone who plays games is a “gamer” than that word is useless because playing games is part of human nature. The way he’s using the word connotes that gamer means “an enthusiast of video games who believes playing games is an integral part of their identity.” Who would take you seriously if you only ever read 50 Shades of Grey and started calling yourself an enthusiast of literature? Nobody. No disrespect to people playing those games and I’m glad they enjoy them, but playing Candy Crush doesn’t make you a gamer anymore than reading Garfield in the Saturday paper makes you a comic book nerd. McBlink Everyone wants to know where the Wii crowd went, I think this answers it. Magnus Gonzalez Click bait article=moronic sony fanboy trolls chiming in driving up clicks. Congrats. Mission accomplished. I will say that these articles are necessary here because it really exposes who the trolls are. Generally they hide out in other discussions and can often times fool people into believing they are on a Wii U site for honest discussion. These types of articles bring out their true colors as they can’t contain themselves. Take note so you can converse with them appropriately. Daniel Gonzalez “Click bait article=moronic sony fanboy trolls chiming in driving up clicks. Congrats. Mission accomplished.” By trolls, you mean yourself? Lol. Cause only a troll would say things such as “Sony fanboys” and therefore, chiming in to help drive up those clicks. It is well noted. Mission accomplished indeed. Thank you for the lesson, but I have to get back to conversing with level-headed gamers. Have a good day silly guy. 😛 Magnus Gonzalez I like the Wii U and am on this site to discuss its merits and enjoy being a fan with others. I’d be considered a fanboy if I went to a Xbox forum and defending Nintendo and put down Xbone at every turn, but I don’t. I also find many faults with Nintendo and am critical when it is warranted. A troll will take every opportunity to rile up fans and goes so far as to frequent a site for a console they don’t like. It might be the saddest thing about the internet that people waste their time doing such things. But you have admitted to being a troll before so no surprise there. But you seem to be more offended by the Sony fanboy moniker.Well, as I said above…a Sony fan frequents Sony forums or general gaming sites like IGN, Destructoid, Gamespot, etc and if a Sony article comes up will make comments. A fanboy, goes the extra length to visit sites that have zero to do with Sony and make idiotic comments. You truly are unoriginal in your trolling approach and nobody appreciates your presence as your lack of upvotes except for a couple of vocal fellow trolls indicates. You spend all this time on a site concerning a product you will never buy. How do you live with yourself? Are you saying you really don’t have a library of games to get through and have so much free time to troll a Wii U site? I mean, there’s only a little over 6 million owners in the world. What satisfaction can you get out of this? Nobody but Mathew, Greengeck or Larson respond to you and nobody likes your contribution. What is it? Curious minds want to know matthew garcia I’m sure u put me in that category also lol Brian Hansen The problem with mobile gaming is the value of the software, Do I see myself 10yrs down the road playing candy crush? I do see myself playing Mario Kart 8, Super Mario World 3D, Wii U Zelda, MH3U, X. Adam Fox This is sad b/c Candy Crush is freaking GARBAGE….. steveb944 I’m to blame. Tho I haven’t paid them, I know through looking at ads I’ve filled their pocket somewhat. I think it’s highly likely due to my addiction, I’ve actually played it more then certain console titles. Justin Carlson I tried Candy Crush. Deleted it after a day because I had played much more enjoyable match three games on the app store. It baffles me that this game is doing so well. Daniel Gonzalez I wonder that myself, but people find enjoyment out of it. That’s their right. I tried it once myself, but just like you, I deleted it fast and found better games. Sometimes, it’s the games we don’t like, are the ones that generate a lot of profit. Yuma Tsukumo No disrespect but this article is plain stupid. How many people have Smart Phones? How many people have Nintendo Consoles? My point speaks for itself. audi lover Board house wives play candy crush no wonder it makes so much money there’s millions of them Roadkill409 Candy Crush will be a flash in the pan. Nintendo will be here in 7 years and Candy Crush won’t. It wasn’t Nintendo who put Sega out of the console business. Sega put itself out of the console business along with Sony giving a big push. If Sega would have made better choices after the Genesis era, Sega would still be here today. I prefer Nintendo over anything out there today but I would say that the PSone was the biggest culprit and Nintendo’s decline started in the N64 era. The PSone was really the first system to make people think they might not need a Nintendo system. And it has never really recovered. The Wii was a big hit. But it did not really sway the masses back. I hope for a better rebound someday. I owned a Saturn during that era. Mario Ah… I’m just gonna write this and hope that Nintendo and the gamers read this. Nintendo, whatever happens to you, wether it’s good or bad, just keep making games the way you guys know how to do it. Never forget that. No matter the path you take the company, and maybe the industry, into. That’s all I gotta say. LordYukYuk Cool beans. I guess King will now join Zynga as the new “kings” of gaming. sarcasm aside, King and companies of its ilk are fly-by-night operations, success today really means little in the long run. Nintendo’s foundations are on solid rock, they’re not going anywhere soon and some trouble today doesn’t necessarily spell doom for tomorrow. lonewolf So the same can be said about Sony and Microsoft right? Shootdatrupee!… Maybe. Depends on if you take into account hardware revenue. Does the article refer to Nintendo’s software earnings only? Because when I calculated the sales of the 3DS alone in theis quarter is enough to put Ninty above King. lonewolf Well in all honesty this news does not make any sense to me FutureFox Some days Facebook has more hits than Google. Its a flash in the pan. Shootdatrupee!… Wait, people actually buy the extra moves and items?!? CutieTrollpie What do you expect from a bunch of idiots stuck on their phones most of the time. Brandon I never downloaded this game once, and dont plan on it. One of the best mobile game companies is gameloft. They make pretty good games, but using a cell phone as a controlller kills the gameplay completely. thomas stevenson Where isnzynga now? Shootdatrupee!… Trying to succeed with FarmVille 2. Meh. They’re not what they’re used to be anyways. CutieTrollpie The idiots buying in-game lives with real money really helped it :p lonewolf88 maybe you should report on helpful stuff like how club nintendo is down thanks! palomino blue I entered MK8 today and it freaked out. Then it didn’t acknowledge the points but told me I had already registered. Still there was no way to claim my free game. Then it all died. I’m choosing to take it as a sign that tons of people bought MK8 and were trying to get their freebies. But maybe not. lonewolf88 thats what I figured also there site is still down guess i should had registered it at midnight hope they keep the event up for like 2 days longer because of this. LordiMcKill How does King make their money : Micro Transactions and Ad Revenue How does Nintendo make their money : Premium Quality Hardware and Software That pretty much says it all. Yoshiwhirlwind Played Candy Crush for a month and quit. Played Nintendo games for 20 plus years, still going. fireheartis1 The sad thing is my wife loves that stupid game. It’s a dang good thing she doesn’t spend money on it though. I can’t stand that game man. It’s a rip off of Bejeweled anyways, and it’s boring. I’ll never understand what my wife sees in it. palomino blue And isn’t Bejeweled also kind of like Magical Drop and Columns? iamserious What the hell is Candy Crush!?! Shootdatrupee!… A very stupid game for non gamer ‘gamers’. You match different candy of the same colours to score points and clear obstacles to pass levels. It’s very addictive, very rage inducing at higher levels and it’s probably the highest grossing game on mobile except for Clash of Clans(which is better). If you haven’t tried the game you might like to, it IS free, and for how bad it is it may be worth a try, but just don’t be tempted to spend money on in app purchases. iamserious Well I used to play Angry Birds on my phone but stopped playing that game when I realized I was spending so much of my time on it when I could be doing other things like playing console games. I may try Candy Crush eventually but I’m really not much of a mobile gamer at all. Shootdatrupee!… My opinion Angry Birds is infinitely times better and nowhere near as addictive/rage inducing. Shootdatrupee!… I’m not so much angry about the fact that Candy Crush made more money than Ninty, because… I’m sure the Xbox and Playstation lovers felt the same way with the Wii. Instead, I’m kind of annoyed as to how Candy Crush made money in the first place. gamingpalooza I can confirm that Best Buy is selling a much higher volume of Wii U consoles due to Mario Kart. Shootdatrupee!… I’m picking up mine this afternoon. So excited! Maybe I can even drag my parents off Candy Crush and Hay Day with MK8. … Yes, I introduced those two games to them… *bows head in shame* Petri Mario Kart has sold out at my nearby retailer. Though that does not really tell much, they could have ordered just enough for preorders. Though the Wii U deals they had for older SKU’s has been pretty great, as cheap as 170€ for Monster Hunter bundle. And Mario Kart bundle has gathered decent amount of preorders. Oni why are we comparing social network games where millions of people have access to for free vs console video games? whole article is pointless. CCM Um you need a bit of a history lesson. Nintendo didn’t push Sega out of business. The fact of the matter was it was Microsoft who pushed Sega out of the console business as Sega was out of money, the Dreamcast was floundering and they knew that 4 home consoles couldn’t co-exist on store shelves. Had it just continued being a 3-horse race, they likely would’ve built a successor console to compete with the GameCube and PS2. Secondly Sony’s first massive success wasn’t the PS2. The PS1 sold over 100 million consoles making it (up to that point) the most successful home videogame console ever. The N64 by comparison sold 33 million units. Daniel Nintendo also sells hardware and accessories. Sdudyoy May I ask? what the heck is Candy crush? Shootdatrupee!… A game for mobile and tablet platforms. If you gave an iPhone or iPad or anything… Just try it. It’s bad, but it’s free, and it doesn’t hurt to try it. Petri 75 years of Batman. eShop offering some sweet deals (in Europe, don’t know about US). Batman games and Resident Evil Revelations discounts. Me And in 5 years, nobody will remember Crappy Crush. Adam Howell I said the same thing about Tetris. Me Tetris was an original thing back then. Candy Crush is just a rip-off of a rip-off of a rip-off… ZeldaFan83 This is interesting and this is partly why Nintendo admitted that they need to branch out to mobile users to make themselves more aware not by making games on mobile devices but apps and advertising to them yet I’m still waiting for this Miiverse app they promised a long time ago… Akatosh Trendy games die out pretty quickly. Josie the Sketcher Stupid article! More like Candy Crush makes more money than all the three gaming companies, not just Nintendo. There are more people with mobiles than gaming consoles combined. To tell you the truth, I play on my iPhone more than my consoles. At the moment I’m playing Farm Heroes Saga. Actually I only play puzzle games on my mobile as i dislike thoses mobile games where you control your character with touch screen buttons – that’s when those gaming consoles excel Geoffrey Tasker Thing is a lot more people have cell phones than people have Nintendo systems and candy crush is available on Pretty much all of them. That in conjuction with micro transactions… You might as well had wrote an article about it raining more in Washington state than it did in Arizona last year Rich Garriques who gives a shit. candy crush is a piece of shit game that moronic mobile gamers play who just live on their smart phone all day. Rich Garriques mobile gaming seriously needs to die , its a cancer to the video game industry and mockery of real gaming. xdrewxnl Totally not related but can someone help… I bought Mario Kart 8… I went on Club Nintendo to register it (I’ve read after that Club Nintendo is having trouble handling the web traffic with Mario Kart 8 just released). So I put in my pin and the page just shows a loading thing forever and then finally nothing happens.. I go to put in the pin again and it says it has already been registered… Where the hell is my download code for a free game? lol… Any idea where I might find it? Petri I don’t know how club Nintendo delivers. But we here at northern Europe get our codes via email sometime August. EDIT: Though you might want to check with customer support, just to be sure. xdrewxnl Thanks. I think I might have solved the problem… .It’s now appearing in my to-do section… But the connection is extremely slow due to the overload on the servers… So at least I know now where to go to get it.. .I might have to just wait patiently 🙂 xdrewxnl But I really want Zelda Wind Waker now 🙁 DragonSilths And it also made more then the Xbox Division last quarter as well as the PS division, its simple, so many more casuals bought this, there are way more casuals then “gamers”. Entropyguy Well yes, Candy Crush makes a ton of money, but in the long run that’s not great news for King because people will get tired of their one product eventually. And then they’ll be another Zynga. Petri Rovio and Angry Birds has been quiet for a while now, last time I heard, 2 of their latest games didn’t really get much attention. Mobile market is mindless entity, if something gets popular, then it gets popular. Not because they’re good games, but because they get attention, like Kardashians. Mobile games are the Kardashians of gaming. Nintygek This isn’t because of me. I did my part 😉 palomino blue Blue Mario Kart case? Nintygek Yes. I live in Europe (Belgium) Brandon WOW, you have alot of games. Even the games that suck(fast &furious). Nintygek My goal is to own all (european) hardcopy released WiiU games. And this include the bad games. 🙂 Brandon That game had a hard copy? Why didnt you get ac4, spider man 2, or ghost? Nintygek Once they lower in price I will. SkullScience Nice collection but nothing compared to mine! Sorry, just thought I would brag a little! I have two rooms in my house dedicated to gaming! Nintygek I just posted my WiiU collection 😉 leo and UBI blames YOU lol Nintygek Showing UBI some love for supporting the WiiU. 😉 leo eahy have you played splintercell? Is it anygood? Nintygek Played it for maybe one hour. It’s good but not great. Jayden So Nintendo put so much effort into making their video games while King just makes 1 puzzle game (which is pretty much Jewel Quest) and their more successful. That is unfair. The Wolf 47 It’s bad to see this bad game outselling Nintendo. It’s a gimmick. Logan Waltz Nintendo pushed Sega out of business? What a moron. TheKnowing Wow, why didn’t they count the other quarters Nintendo completely dominated candy crush where money and EVERYTHING else is concerned (which is like every time). Useless statistics. meekmeek93 So are you guys gonna talk about the Smash Bros Invitational news or keep writing these kinds of articles…? Fuzzylittlebastard Well that stinks. Cerus98 Apple to oranges. People spend thousands of dollars on the free to play games – the profit margin is way above a company like Nintendo that produces an actuall physical product and all that entails. Kids alone have racked up thousands on unsuspecting parents. I’m sure those are counted in their profits even if the parents manage to get the charges refunded via Apple. Petri Its pretty insane what kind of amounts you hear kids using on their parents cards. 8000€ was on news a while back. Makes me think if some parents are aware of this but they’ll just be like “do what you want, I can dispute the charges later”, can’t say no to their little angel. Cerus98 So I read the original article and looked at the earnings chart of the top 25 companies. Funny how Supercell isn’t listed even though they took in over $100 million in Q1 putting them way above King (candy crush) so perhaps we shouldn’t even be rewriting articles with bogus information? Alexandre This is really a stupid notice. Since, for ex., PS 3 works 5 years losing money for sony, and its a great console, so any game that give one dollar made more money than all playstations in over 5 years. One single minute of stupid flapping bird will make more money than 6 years of wiiU or Vita, an one day of idiot angry birds made more money than ryse of Rome in all history. I really don t understand why this bolg call WiiU daily, and not Nintendoistheworstthingintheworld.com or ihatenintendoandihatemarioandihatemetroidandihatezelda.com sd Its a sad day for gaming when you hear things like this. Lee justin beiber sold more singles than many artists this year, does that mean hes better? .. NO., this article is retarded. leo exactly Daniel Gonzalez The article was just for the purpose of clickbait. It’s how they make their money for this site. HavokPants yeah a FREE GAME full of ADS and MICROTRANSACTIONS which both make MONEY off people who dont like HARDCORE ACTUAL GAMES SkullScience Actually the makers of Candy Crush made the rich list, so they overtook many many entertainment companies. The vast majority in fact! Singling out Nintendo is just amateur hack journalism (and I usually like Ashley)! I am glad Nintendo don’t earn their money the same way as GungHo! It is malicious and preys on addicts and impressionable youths! IAP, the way GungHo adopt it, is a cancer in gaming! William Cole Who gives a crap. Who’s gonna cry over a scene in Candy Crush Saga? Who will say that their lives truly changed because of Candy Crush Saga? Nintendo has made games(along with others like Square Enix) that can do just this. Change your life substantially and change your mindset. Nintendo started this thing and I highly doubt Candy Crush Saga will end it. James Enk this has nothing to do with video game developers and everything to do with stupid ppl who play games that tell you how many tries you have with it and when it’s time for you to play again… oh but if you give us money we will let you play again… now tell me who can play Nintendo or any other company for developing similar game for smart phones and tablets Gene “pushing rival Sega out of business. It wasn’t until the massive success of the PS2 that Nintendo even saw a threat to its reign as king of video games” Oh yeah, you just forgot the PS1. None of Nintendo’s home consoles outsold the PS1 yet. Daniel Gonzalez I think what is funny about this, is that the article alone, is being completely biased by calling Nintendo the king of video games. I found that amusing seeing as the king of video games, can’t even gather proper third party support, plus being behind on HD development, and did I mention that they made poor choices with media in the past? So much for that King of video games claim. It matters little who sells more, because there is no such thing as a king of video games. That’s just based on opinion, which is what Ashley expressed. So, I don’t know why she even added that into a news article other than to satisfy the cravings of the fanboys. She should have saved that part for an opinion piece, which would have made more sense. I don’t blame people for moving to the forums. I’m more of a Sony guy these days, but I even when PS2 was selling and on top of the world so to speak, I wouldn’t call them the king of video games. 😛 Denvy To be fair, “King” status was referred to in the 80’s and 90’s which they certainly were. However, I’m not quite agreeing that the threat to that status began with the PS2. It was earlier than that. leo Ywan. Candy Crush in 2 years nobody will a give a fuck. Matthew Lambert Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Actually, I don’t care Matthew Lambert Hail Nintendo! james Mobile games are such crap, I can not understand why people play them so much. Majority who do are not gamers anyway. Sad that a “game” like candy crush can be so successful. This is why I hate cell phones. Well one reason anyway. URFTBOUND4LIFE . Candy Crush is just Bejewled for noobs. All those mobile games are knock-off of games we already seen and played before. They don’t even deserve any of that money if you ask me. Flappy Bird too.
