After a Canadian store flyer leaked the black 3DS XL, we’ve been waiting with bated breath hoping Nintendo would announce the console officially. That day is today and the release date coincides with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for North America, which is coming on August 11th.

The Nintendo 3DS XL system is about to get a little more formal. On Aug. 11, Nintendo is releasing a black version of the Nintendo 3DS XL hand-held system, joining the currently available range of colors: blue, red and pink.

Will you be picking up this new color? I gave in and bought a 3DS myself earlier this year because I wanted to play Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey, but I’ll be upgrading to this bigger screen and replacing my Cosmo Black Nintendo 3DS.

    I’ve got two problems:
    1 – Already have a 3DS
2 – Not enough spare money to justify upgrade

I’ve wanted an XL ever since it was hinted at – silly me, I wasted all my funds on 3 3DSs on launch day. 🙁

We still have those Ambassador games…right?…..right?

I already own a Blue/Black 3DS XL. I feel the 3DS pales in comparison to the 3DS XL.

Further, I feel there’s a design flaw with the 3DS that allows the sharp edge along the bottom screen to sometimes scratch the top screen.

I wonder if black will be a limited edition or if it will continue on. I’m a huge fan of limited edition XL designs, but we don’t get many for the XL in the NA region.

Yeah.. one of two reasons I want to upgrade – my bottom screen has made two vertical lines clearly visible on my top screen (since I play in 3D, it’s not as noticeable as it could be, but still annoying) and my bottom screen has a dust particle in it.. 🙁 I need money..! >_<

That happens with the XL as well, I got extremely annoyed upon further inspection of my XL after a week of having it I noticed the infamous top screen scratch, I contacted nintendo’s customer service and thankfully it’s covered under the warranty once I explained that the touch screens upraised bezel was touching the top screen. I regret not buying a screen protector since I was under the assumption that the XL didn’t have that issue.

Odd, the bumpers on the top keep the top screen 1/8″ from the bottom. There are videos of people force slamming it shut and sitting on it on youtube to try and scratch the top with the bottom to no avail.

        • Gary

Well I’ve only had my XL for about a week and the scratches are exactly like that of how it is on regular 3DS’s (Compared to my cousins 3ds), I think the problem lies with the fact that the bumpers are a bit too spaced out so that leaves a little flex on the top screen which allows for it to touch the bezel of the bottom screen, since I usually carry it in my pockets to and from work it may cause some pressure on the top screen which is where that flex come into play. Thankfully nintendo’s customer service is kick ass so I can just walk in to the nearest repair shop (only an hour away) rather than wait for a 3 week mailing period it takes at most a few days.

I miss that beautiful shine of the normal 3DS….

  • Mochlum

I was hoping for that Luigi one…

    >:( I finally decided to upgrade to a 3DS XL two months ago, and I’m loving it very much. However, I had to settle on the blue one, but had a black one been available, I would have gotten that instead. Curse you!

The Target I go to is apparently selling the black 3ds XL early. I’m probably going to wait until a while until buying one since the box its contained in is pretty roughed up.

  • Melwin E Rivera

I may not need it as i already have three 3DS XL’s the colors i have are Red/Black, Pink/White and the Pikachu Edition 3DS XL.

  • YayGs

If they don’t make a new special edition for zelda or a green one I’ll pick this one up assuming it becomes a normal color and not a limited edition one (which I’m pretty sure it will be a normal color).

Also, the 3DS news’ page doesn’t seem to update automatically for my browser like it does for the Wii U news, I have to refresh the page to check if there are any news updates.

  • From August the 11th NA has a Black, Blue, Red and Pink 3DS XL? Doesn’t NA have the Grey one? In europe we have the Red, Blue, Grey and Pink one. Personally I got the Grey one but sadly the black one has not been confirmed for Europe yet. Offcourse there are also the special editions, Fire Emble Blue and the Animal Crossing White editions 🙂

I suppose I should have waited a little longer for the black XL version 😉

    • daeglyth

      NA doesn’t have grey.
