Ken Levine —Irrational Games co-founder and creative director of the famed Bioshock series— listed The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD among his top ten games of 2013. Mr. Levine’s recommendation came by way of a blog post on GiantBomb.com, in which he remarked: A magical game about a floutist. What else do I need to say that hasn’t been said, except I was never one of those haters who didn’t like the way it looked on the GameCube, and it’s even better now. Other “big names” made the list, such as Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Dishonored. However The Wind Waker HD was ultimately the only Nintendo-exclusive title that came to Levine’s mind. Out of a sea of year-end best game lists and videos its nice to see such an esteemed figure in the industry list his favorite games in no particular order. …in short, don’t waste your time reading this list because it doesn’t mean much. However, if I had to name 10 games of 2013, I’d go with these. (P.S., they’re not in any order of importance.) The creative director was humble enough to leave out his own oft-nominated-for-game-of-2013 title, Bioshock Infinite. Those of us still hoping for that game to be ported over to the Wii U… (sigh) We’re left with the open-ended remark Levine made back at E3 2012. Don’t give up hope, people! Nintendo shares up 20% since Switch launch Sdudyoy That’s cool, me personally wouldn’t be able to put a remake in my top ten, but either way. ShilaquilOneal I would. The 2002 remake of Resident Evil 1 for Gamecube is on my top ten list of best games ever. Chad Dodsworth The shark tank part… Walking by the dead shark made me fill my pants… Sdudyoy While I was more of talking about games that came out this year, I would gladly put the original Wind waker on my top ten game list, but I wouldn’t put the remake in my top ten games of the year. ShilaquilOneal Well you sounded more like you would never consider adding a remake to any list of yours. I don’t mind remakes if done right. And the Wind Waker remake happens to be one of those games that was well crafted during the remake process. So I don’t think that it is strange or out of place to add such a game to his personal top ten list. No more than me adding the RE1 remake to my own top ten list. Both remakes were leagues above other recent remake efforts (looking at you Konami and that awful Silent Hill HD Collection). Sdudyoy I was saying that I wouldn’t put one in my list, I don’t care what people do with there list, that’s up to them, I just don’t consider remakes a new game, when I think of my top ten games of 2013 I don’t think of remakes because the game itself didn’t come out this year, It’s just been painted over and resold, I was just stating my opinion. Daniel Gonzalez Different opinions towards Nintendo in general is bad. You should pick up your katana and go the way of Seppuku. It’s the most honorable thing to do. Sdudyoy What on earth is a Seppuku? and I love Nintendo there the only video games I play, I just don’t like remakes, I have no idea what you are talking about. Daniel Gonzalez My response to your post was a joke. Shame you didn’t get it. 😛 Since you asked, Seppuku is a Japanese suicide ritual, which was originally part of a samurai bushido honour code. Sdudyoy Okay, sorry I didn’t get it! Nintendofreak there is no flute its a ocarina and second in ww its a magical conductor baton that invokes the power of the wind u.u ShilaquilOneal The ocarina is technically a vessel FLUTE. Guest but its not a flute a flute is a flute.. may belong in the same family but its like saying a bass and a guitar are the same they are alike but yet different u.u ShilaquilOneal But it IS a flute. So the man is right by calling it that. “its like saying a bass and a guitar are the same they are alike but yet different” Not a good comparison. A bass guitar IS a guitar. Just like an acoustic guitar is one as well. They’re both guitars. Just like an Ocarina & a piccolo are both flutes. I understand that you’re trying to say that there is a difference there. But its like running shoes and tap-dancing shoes being shoes despite having a different purpose. steve he was reffering to wind waker so he is still wrong, and no a flute is a flute. a piccalo is not a flute its a piccalo, and an ocarina is an ocarina. Volfos A tin-whistle player and an ocarina player both play kinds of flute, despite them being totally different. I suck at both so I should know! Also, I am pretty sure floutist a kind of conductor? And this is Wind-Waker. Nintendofreak ok this has gone long ENOUGH there is no flute on wind waker its a baton, a conductor baton that has magical wind powers the end Nintendofreak they may belong in the same family of instrument but they arent the same is like saying a banjo and a guitar are the same but yet they both are stringed instruments u.u Volfos A person who plays a rock an roll drum-kit and a person who plays a bodhran are both drummers. Also, isn’t a floutist a kind of conductor? Like, the person who uses the Wind-Waker to conduct? steve ya true, i think they are missing the point that windwaker has no variety of “flutes” Flawless Victory It is. Guest floutist is pronounced fl-OUT-tist and is another name for conductor. Flawless Victory A flautist or flutist or flute player is a musician who plays any instrument in the flute family. Jason “…with the use of the ocarina (a clay flute), players need to play certain melodies to solve riddles…” (taken from a synopsis of Ocarina of Time). Or, if you want to get more technical, “The ocarina /ɒkəˈriːnə/ is a wind instrument in the category of vessel flutes.” (taken from Wikipedia). So both according to the Zelda series, as well as by definition, an ocarina is a type of flute. C4 He probably just thinks it’s the same Link person as in OoT? Like people refer to Mario as a plumber. Ace That’s cool! That is actually saying a lot coming from someone so creative in the industry. Zelda is my favorite franchise, but I love me some BioShock too. lonewolf88 the last bio wasn’t as good as i thought it was going to be though :/ Ace I haven’t finished it yet. Excited to see what both franchises have to offer in the future though. steve it had so much variety in terms of setting, i thought it was good but maybe not as creepy as the original one or 2. greengecko007 “A magical game about a floutist.” Confirmed, he hasn’t actually played the game. greengecko007 The whole thing is bogus. Go to the source article. For someone describing their top 10 games of 2013, he sounds like he hasn’t played any of them. His justifications are all vague blanket statements that could be pieced together just by looking at a game cover. Reason for liking Xcom? “Hey, it’s XCom. And it’s awesome, adding in rather than adding on. A great design gets better.” Reason for liking AC4? “Pirates. Sword fighting. Sailing ships. Or as Churchill described the life of the old timey sailor, “Rum, sodomy and the lash.” Great game, great characters. Bravo.” Christopher Acuna -_- Flawless Victory Hmmmm…Idk ..he doesn’t come off like he actually plays the games in depth, but I like the positive feedback nontheless. I plan to play some more Wind Waker HD today anyway. Daniel Gonzalez Most developers don’t have the time that we do to play games. They usually have busy schedules. Lil J Moore What? no 3d World. He disappoints me Daniel Gonzalez Either he didn’t care for it as much as everyone else, or he didn’t have the opportunity to play it. Ernie Sanguyo Bioshock 1 and 2 is awesome. I haven’t play Infinite yet, I hopeit’s good also. Daniel Gonzalez Neither have I. Considered getting it on Steam or PS3. Fred So I just watched this video on IGN http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/10/24/game-scoop-how-do-we-define-gamers After watching, I wondered how are guys like me catagorized I play 20-30 different games every year (although I’ll probably only conquer about 6 of them). I own a PS3, 3DS, 3DS XL and Wii U. I own about 150 games, and only 6 of them are on the PS3. Of the games on the Nintendo systems, 70% of them are published by Nintendo. I play solo, my wife sometimes joins in, and my kids frequently join in. I listen to gamer podcasts and read gaming news sites, but it’s also lopsided my reading/listening is 80% Nintendo 19% Sony/Microsoft 1% Android Almost 0% iOS Am I a casual gamer because I don’t branch out much? A Nintendo Gamer because that’s what I mostly do? Or am I Hard-Core because of the amount of time AND money I spend? Saul Rivera I like to see a Hardcore gamer as someone who plays everything..even if it’s Kirby..without any fuss about it being kiddy or casual… Those who only play FPS aren’t hardcore…they seem more picky…they think it’s all the videogame industry has to offer…and they miss out on great games just because it has no blood in them or rated M =_= So you’re as hardcore as they come 🙂 Petri Yes, those people who bitch about “kiddy” games are casual gamers. It’s all about passion, you don’t have to own every platform and every game to be a hardcore gamer. Flawless Victory True. steve i think the term hardcore is more for online competive games like halo or gears. but it can mean whatever you want. in the industry though thats what they mean. Simon Stevens Kinda makes me think about gamers who ignore handhelds and don’t class them as a console, graphics shouldn’t primarily define a game, yet for the fanboys of xbox1 and ps4 it does, that’s sad, these days, my primary systems are handhelds, Vita despite poor sales has had some great games so far, 3ds has given me too many to count on both hands and feet, I ran outta fingers and toes 🙁 psp and especially ds had a very unique and bountiful library of games, yet, vastly ignored by most, surprisingly… Kirby has always been my favourite franchise across all video games, that says something about the creativity that Nintendo bestow upon the lil pink feller considering I’m for the most part a jrpg gamer, Nintendo simply serve every audience, that being said…. I have a hankering to play squeak squad 😀 cya! Flawless Victory A hardcore gamer is typically someone who keeps up with gaming news and just knows what is generally happening in the gaming industry, and they tend to play many different games from multiple genres…not all..but at least a handful or more. It doesn’t really matter if you like Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft more…though I will say this…there will be hardcore gamers who are fanboys of these gaming companies who will defend them strongly from their respective corners like lapdogs. You are what we would call a Nintendo fan like myself and others here. Also, someone who just plays mature games isn’t more of a hardcore gamer…it’s just means their gaming experience is limited. If you see someone who plays mature and lighthearted games on average..they probably are more balanced in what they like. Causal gamers normally don’t keep up with what’s going on in the gaming world, and they just play a fixed game they like over and over. You can recognize a casual gamer, because they aren’t really going to engage in much dialogue about gaming…even in a general conversations. P.S. – A good way to identify a fanboy is that they will relentlessly praise a gaming company or they will relentlessly bash a gaming company. It’s usually to an extreme. Shigeru Miyamoto Dude you are HARDCORE. If you play Nintendo… you’re hardcore in my opinion. YogiGRB hardcore gamer man, just like you i also play almost everything HydePark1980 There’s no such thing as a Hardcore gamer, you have the true gamers (who are rare) and everyone else. Fred So how would you differentiate between true gamers and everyone else? HydePark1980 True gamers embrace games on a much wider level, they’re not bogged down by weather or not the game contains mature content. Think of it this way, it’s real hard to call yourself a true gamer when 90% of your library of games consist of shooters. Fred What if none of my library consists of shooters. I played a ton of N64 007 and a decent amount of Gamecube Time splitters, but since then I’ve played almost no shooters leo yet we don’t get bioshock…. Volfos Most designers can’t compete on Nintendo consoles… look at the 3DS, its got third party support and last time I checked there is something like 22 first party games in its top 30 selling games, compared to the top Xbox 360 and PS3 games, which are, last I checked, 11 Microsoft and 7 Sony. That is why I’d want to go second party to Nintendo if I had plans for the Wii-U or 3DS. Daniel Gonzalez Second party doesn’t seem to have much luck either. Look at Wonderful 101. It’s just proof that even second party titles are capable of getting poor sales despite Nintendo publishing it. If third party can’t compete on Nintendo consoles, then they are right at home with Sony, Microsoft and PC. Volfos Wonderful 101 wasn’t second party. It was just Nintendo published. Totally different beast. leo that comment hm…. Daniel Gonzalez What about it? Sdudyoy Happy new year’s! (Where I am It’s 12:00!) Flawless Victory Happy New Year! 2014 has arrived! Gabriel Fiala HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! HypocritesRROD Wìnd Waker is a great game. I’m not surprised that it is in his top 10 games of 2013. Ducked Dishonored came out in 2012… themizarkshow He had a really solid list. Still need to try a couple that he had on there though… but I can’t afford to lose more life to Civ and Xcom right now. Nikko Ybanez SM3DW and The Stanley Parable were my top games of the year.
