Wii U infographic

Best Buy is currently offering a promotion where purchasing a Wii U Deluxe model will also net you a $50 gift card. The gift card will be added to your cart during check out. You’ll still have to pay full price for the Deluxe version, which is $349.99, but that $50 gift card is a great way to get a leg up on Pikmin 3 if you’re purchasing a Wii U to play that game.

Thanks Leo!

  • Trust me, you want that leg up on Pikmin 3. It’s a GREAT game

    • Clel

      Ooh, you got it then?

      • I did indeed. It’s marvelous

  • Will.F. Martinez

Where was that deal when I was buying my WiiU lol. Im still glad I got mines at release

    • Merrfn

I actually regret getting my Wii U at launch. Though it is a amazing console full of potential, this first year with the lack of games and all, nobody developer has really fully utilised it. I would of preferred to of gotten my Wii U next year or after a potential price drop.

  • Mochlum

Noticed this when picking up Pikmin 3. Best Buy seems to be helping the Wii U most. It is the only store I’ve seen that has both a decent Wii U display, decent Wii U advertising, and with a seperation of the Wii and Wii U. Target seems to be doing it okay too, but many of the Wii U games are scrambled in the Wii aisle.

    • I agree. The walmarts, targets and a few other stores I have been to they seem to shove the Wii U and it’s games in the corner, mix up the displays with Wii games as well, and have poor signage and displays.

Yet the XBOX360, PS3 and even pre-order and advertisements for the PS4 and XB1 are better displayed and separated.

      • Lusunup

Especially Gamestop!; since its a small store they moved the wii u section to the corner of the entrances were you can’t see them.. I had to search for a min or so.. that means a lot since its a small store.

        • No Kidding.. When the Wii U first came out they had a nice display at the gamestops by me, then the last time I was in them they had the display shoved in the back, it wasn’t powered on and unless you went to the corner to find the back storage room you would miss it.

They’re excuse was the unit wasn’t selling…. Well Duh!! you hide it in the back corner and unplug the demo station how is it going to sell.

          • Arthur Jarret

…it’s like the ps3 all over again – and we all know how that one turned out.

            No worries!

          • I am curious if someone comes in this fall asking for “The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker” for Wii U will they direct them to a used copy of the GC game because they are too dumb to keep up with the products in the industry they work in.

        • Truthteller

          I am stupid and dumb

        • readypembroke

They moved the Wii U section at the GS nearest me from to the right corner where you enter to left of the counter where the 3DS games were. The last time I was there, their Wii U demo was on, and thats how come I got a Wii U was because of the demo.

      • bizzy gie

And they only stock two games for every new Wii U that releases at my Walmart.

        • readypembroke

My walmart has a 1/3 or 1/2 or 1 whole display for the Wii U. They even have white Pro Controllers for $37.50!

    • Jack5221

Its a sham Best Buy is only in the USA / Canada :-/

    • Ducked

Agree, Best Buy is doing the best job trying to sell the Wii U.

    • Mykdee

i couldn’t disagree more about Best Buy. I tried to buy Pikmin 3 on release day. 3 of 6 employees escorted me to the Wii section, and didn’t know what i was talking about when i said ‘no it just came out on the WiiU today’. They didn’t have any copies on the shelf and took 40 minutes to find one in the back. One of the supervisors told me he had turned away an old guy who was asking for it, because he didn’t know what it was. On top of that there WiiU section was EMPTY. They literally had less than 20 copies of games, and they were Nintendoland, ZombieU, and FIFA. And there was no demo console available. I hope that all Best Buys are not this bad, but mine is usually really good.
It is extremely clear to me why the Wii U has such low sales, especially when the people selling it don’t even know what it is. They can’t even sell you something that you went there looking for, let alone a browsing shopper.

        Best Buy Employees …

Why Best Buy is Going out of Business..Gradually – Forbes

      • The staff is a big issue. The two Best Buy’s I have go to in my area have decent displays with a demo unit but I have had sales people try and sway me away from getting a game for that platform because the “graphics are so much better on a 360 or PS3.

I literally heard some 19 year old tell a parent to not buy a Wii U for her son because, and I quote, “You don’t want that. The Wii U sucks. Wait and get your son a XBOX One. That is the system everyone wants” She replied but he likes Mario and Pokemon and the sales person said “Everyone has to grow up sometime”

I was appalled on his ignorance. Luckily I saw her continue to browse and told her that if he likes the Nintendo Brand games then get him the Wii U. I am a grown up and to me it is the best value for the money.

        • Mark

…….Seriously? A Best Buy employee actually said something this bias and retarded to a customer? A customer for Pete’s sake. What gives him the right to tell her son what he should like and buy? You’re not her son. He doesn’t have the same interests as you. If he was going to be any help, he should have directed her to what she looking for, not sway her into buying something she didn’t come there for.

          • That kind of stuff happens all the time. I worked there back in the 90’s as a bench tech and the sales staff (mostly composed of teenagers and young adults that thought they knew everything) used to lie and bad mouth products just to get a sale. Makes me thankful I know about technology so I can just tell the sales people I do not need their help. I do not buy a whole lot from the store anymore because every time I do go in there the staff is filled with uneducated kids that talk out of their ass. Granted there are a handful that know what they are talking about and are helpful to the customers but in my experience that is very rare.

          • Mark

That’s pretty bad. At least the Best Buy near me actually has nice staff as well as a Wii U section; they also have a nice Wii U kiosk. I’m still in school and I might work as a member of their “geed squad.” Although I love consoles, I love PC’s too; fixing and tinkering with them just gives me happiness for some reason.

          • Well then you are lucky.. Being a former employee of theirs I think a lot of it has to do with management. I found that lots of people that started working as teenagers became supervisors and they abuse the power because they think they are bad ass.

          • Mark

            As they say “Power Corrupts.”

      • Mochlum

It mostly really depends on staff. My Wii U had a big display of Wii U boxes showing the price and advertising the gift card deal. It also had like 8 full stacks of Pikmin 3 (I got there fairly early so nobody has bought them yet.) It also had a demo station. I’m guessing it depends on store, and I’m guessing people working at Best Buy would care for Nintendo more then people working at Target or Wal-Mart.

    • Orto

Bringing the price down will only make it harder the get a wii u. Stores across the nation are running wii u stocks low in an attempt to maximise their nintendo profits. However we need to show retailers like planet hollywood that the wii u can be sold at a readonable price and that the greater populance will buy if the price is right,

      • Gotallofthem

They are not bringing the price down, you are still paying full price. You are just getting a gift card for the store. (though very similar, its not the same thing).

  • MrBuney

Target – Couldnt give a crap

Best Buy – thinks Wii u is the “best buy” lol

Wal mart – on the “wal” about it

    • Rugmouse

Unfortunately Target not giving a crap is very accurate. Went to my local Target store to see if Pikmin was still in stock (I downloaded the digital version myself) to find out it doesn’t even have shelf space. Went online and confirmed that it is an ‘online only’ item.

      Really Target???

      • ETeach

Walmart wasn’t much better. They keep all the WiiU games in the same “Wii” case as the last gen games. It looks like they don’t even realize it’s a new system…

    • Ducked

Target is one of the only retailers other than Best Buy to actually separate the Wii U from the Wii…

  • Starfoxguy

It’s nice to finally see a store that’s actually trying to sell the Wii U.

  • Ducked

Target had this deal last week….

  • Sdudyoy

I know this is unrelated but Pikmin 3 is awesome so far! I got it from the Eshop at midnight release and I love it.

    • val berger

yeah. most original and addictive game in years. this game really is for videogames, what a studio ghibli movie is for cinema.

  • everyone

Target is doing the same promo this week I believe. So if Best Buy doesn’t have any in stock you can try them.

    • Decker Shado

Just make sure they don’t try to sell you a Wii with a gamepad. πŸ˜‰

      • everyone

You mean its not a Wiimote attachment?

        • Game Master

          lol πŸ™‚

  • Antar RodrΓguez

ashley can u write an article to explain why splinter cell on wii u wont have local multiplayer?

    • Gotallofthem

Still has online co-op, so for me it doesn’t matter. And most people play their multiplayer online anyway. I can always just tell my friends to log on so we can play together.

      • Antar RodrΓguez

i know , but still its a huge mistratment for the wii u, i really hate how 3rd parties treat this console as crap, as far as i know they didnt include local multiplayer on wii u version cause they were busy making it for the xbox 360 and ps3, and beside it happened in arkham origins too but with the online multiplayer, i know that we are all use to only play the arkham series as a 1 player only but hell if there is an innovation like that wii u sure deserves it, its not just valid to say they are just focusiing in the consoles with high player base

        • Mochlum

I have a feeling they’re doing that because it has gamepad use. πŸ˜› Also, Ubisoft doesn’t exactly treat it like crap, but more like a poorly selling system. (ZombiU2 wouldn’t sell so they aren’t making it, Wii U wasn’t selling so they went multiplat on Rayman, etc.) Sad, but true.

    • Petri

      I’m over this.
I was upset for a day, and still think its lame its gimped.
But Gamepad features should make this fun game, and Ubisoft Shanghai has never let me down before.
And to be honest, my wife cant play a game, if it requires using 2 sticks at the same time…
They might patch it in if Wii U gamers show enough demand for it, but I dont think boycotting would fit this situation.

I will most probably buy it, and still would pick it up before Delayman Legends.

No need for another troll bait doom and gloom article you can rage on at mynintendonews.

  • RoboticLink

Hey look everybody!! Best Buy actually advertised the Wii U (unlike someone, cough cough, Target)

    • To be fair, Target did advertise the Wii U but put a picture of the Wii instead.

      • RoboticLink

Yeah, they tried, but let’s just say they didn’t do the best job of it

  • Veries Seals

Well if you think those Pikmin 3 stories are amazing, check this out. I went to my local Gamestop to pick up Pikmin 3. I step up to the counter and the Gamestop Rep asked me how may I help you. I said YES! I would like a copy of Pikmin 3 please! His response was for what system would that be sir? Then he started to look it up in the system. LMAO! I was like are you serious? It is only for Wii U there is no reason to look it up to see what system it is released on. This is the Mountain that the Wii U is up against. Our own game professionals don’t know their jobs.

    • And many of them are teenagers or young adults that spread the FUD that Nintendo is “Underpowered” and only for Kiddie Games.

      • readypembroke

I remember that my brother’s friend said that Black Ops 2 for Wii U had less fun than for 360 before he played it and 3 days ago he came over and men and him did 2 player online and he said that it was more fun than 360.

      • Veries Seals

Honestly, at one time I was on the path of trying to develop games. You never know. I may go back to it. To be honest, I would love to develop for Wii U.

    • Graeme Lynch

Okay I get the frustration but lets quit blaming store employees for the ‘failure’ of the WiiU. True sometimes stores hire people that don’t have a great knowledge of everything in their store. True they should. Untrue that they should not give their opinion on products when asked. Even if it is an opinion people on this site dislike/disagree with.
Yet what really amuses me is the subtle innuendo that store employees are to blame for WiiU not selling. That my friends is freaking hilarious and the very thing y’all are complaining these people are. Uneducated. Bias. Retarded.

      • Veries Seals

Ok, i respect everyone’s opinion but you are way off of my point. 1st of all I am a customer 1st and I love Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft and I can tell you that the people at these stores are pushing the PS4 and Xbox one more than the Wii U and that is a fact. 2nd as a customer that spend my hard earned money on a product from a store I deserve to be treated to an employee that has knowledge of the product that they are trying to sell me. It is also the sales person’s job in the stores to also push the product. As much as you would like to believe the selling of Wii U is only Nintendo’s job and not the job of the retailers and 2nd and 3rd party game developers as well you are sorely mistaken. Advertising only goes so far. Developers are hurting the console by giving us old or half ports in which they do not even have to. The Wii U is super powerful and have better storage options then the consoles to come. So there is no longer any excuses why developers should short the Wii U owners. What’s hilarious is how you are letting all of the factions of this issue slide with sub par sales promotions.

        • Graeme Lynch

Firstly it is the responsibility of Nintendo to ensure business and consumers have an understanding of what the WiiU is. That is something that is proved time and time again not to be the case. Nintendo have not done a very good job of this.
Secondly what you said makes no sense. Obviously the employee isn’t trying to sell you anything WiiU according to you so why would they have any knowledge of it?
Thirdly, Wii U is not ‘super’ powerful nor does it have better storage options. The Wii U is not on the same playing field as Xbox1 or PS4 in that respect.
Also I am not claiming that it is solely Nintendo’s responsibility to sell the Wii U. However, it is their responsibility to ensure it is marketed well, has a solid selection of games that people want to play and to educate their businesses and consumers on their product.

          • Veries Seals

Actually what is said makes since, since I have years of management under my belt, plus I own my own company, I believe I am qualified to speak on what an employee is suppose to do on their jobs. Secondly since I have worked for that company I know what his job is. So yes it was his job to sell me on any product in that store that I inquired about. It is also his job to gain a reputable knowledge of the product he sells and if you read your previous rebuttal you were trying to say that it is Nintendo job to sell the console which is not completely true. Games sell consoles and 2nd and 3rd parties also make games. It is also their jobs to make quality products on the platform so it will fly off store shelves, not give us half done products. Yes Nintendo should increase marketing efforts but 2nd and 3rd parties also can pay for advertisements of there own games as well. You are not talking to someone who does not have knowledge of sales, advertising and selling products or even managing large budgets. Finally I am a computer tech will several years of knowledge of hardware and software and the Wii U is a powerful platform for game development. There is a clear difference between powerful and more powerful. Just because the PS4 or XBox One is more powerful does not mean that the Wii U is not powerful. Now what is going on here is you want to say how you feel about the industry and you don’t want others to have any opinion. Keep in mind that I posted how I felt about the industry and why I feel like the console may not be selling from my experiences and my perspective. You have every right to say how you feel about the industry and what you think, but what you don’t have a right to is being offensive about what makes since to one or another. If you don’t like what I have to say you are more than welcome not to join in to my post or reply.

          • Graeme Lynch

I enjoy your ‘mature’ response. Well done.

          • Veries Seals

  • kevin nun—-

Yeah I saw the same offer on the fail ad Target printed.

  • Arthur Jarret

Good promo – I suggest either pikmin 3 or monster hunter 3 for that gift card… or lego city… or need for speed most wanted – best ed… uh, wii u edition

or wait for W101, it’ll be awesome!

  • Shelim Uddin

New screen shots of WW HD my ass has exploded!

    • John Raybell

yes we know this, we have for a long long long time, under the different names you have used

  • shaun

so i guess I would use the $50 for a e-shop gift card since i’ve gone all digital download though already bought a Deluxe for myself @ xmas.

        ME TOO!

  • John Raybell

Have a wiiu, hope to see a promotion like this for the ps4 and xboxone also, so i can save a few bucks on one of those πŸ˜‰

I love my wiiu, but it sure does love its dust lately πŸ™

    • Christopher Westcott

There are some pretty fun games for the system! Right now I’m behind on New Luigi U, Pikmin 3, Assassin’s Creed III, Injustice, and Need for Speed…

      • Petri

Yes, Wii U is fine game wise, if you only have time for one console, like I do.
Kinda wish I had no life, maybe then I could bitch about Wii U having no games.
I’m behind on about 6 retail games, about 3 eShop games, and over 10 games that still have play value.
And this month there’s 3 more games coming.
But lately been hooked on Dark Souls, I wish that came to Wii U.

New Super Luigi U was fun, only minus I’d give for it was copy/paste boss battles.

      • John Raybell

yeah games iv played awhile back, only “one” i dont have that you named off is pikmin 3, will get it soon, but thats one game, I should be able to walk into the store and see 3 or 4 very good games from nintendo worth getting, not old games that came out months ago :S

  • John Raybell

Nintendo needs to expand on dev team size and hurry those games already.

As of right now im about ready to bail on my wiiu for a 3dsXL.

I will keep it around as a dust collector until some games come out, hmmmm may even put it back in its box like my wii :S

    • sd

Why? get Pikmin 3 then 101. If you dont like them why own a Wii U? (serious question not a dig).

Oh Pikmin 3 never appealed to me, it always looked stupid. I bought it anyway as there is nothing else to buy. I was expecting boredom and a refund from the shops. Instead I got one of the best games I have ever played. It is a great strategy game and an essential buy. Seriouslt it is amazing , I completed it (took 15-20 hrs not including mission modes) and am actually going to play again from the start. I NEVER do that and I mean NEVER.

      • John Raybell

I will get them, but thats two games

        • sd

Pikmin 3 , W 101, splintercell, zelda, sonic lost worlds, donkey kong, sonic/mario at the olympics, mario. Thats my choice from Nintendo this year.
You also have scribblenauts unlimited, disney planes, wii fit and wii party U. (not my games
My list doesnt include AC4, batman, rayman, watchdogs etc
Is that not enough games for you? It has been slow but now the games are being released so you can dust it off and play as far as I can tell.

      • readypembroke

Buy Virtual Console games then, most of them have alot of fun!

  • Antar RodrΓguez

im really tired of the wii UΒ΄s situation, 3rd party developers dropping out, even ubisoft (wich in my opinion has been the best 3rd party dev for wii u) has started to drop out: no local mp on splinter cell blacklist on wii u version, no “the division” game, no zombie U sequel, guess ill just have to stick with watch dogs and ac4, man i just wish nintendo really starts correcting all this “situations” otherwise nintendo will really only be a 1st party console, wich is bad for the future growth of the company, batman arkham origins wont even have online multiplayer, im 70% sure call of duty ghosts will be the same story as black ops 2 (no support nor DLC) so im just in hopes we final buyers of video games from nintendo and other companies ask for a solution to this.

    • oontz

“nintendo will really only be a 1st party console”

Nintendo has ALWAYS been a 1st party console, since the N64 days.

      • Antar RodrΓguez

Yeha but i meant like really not having a single 3rd party title

  • Josh

I still can’t bring myself to buy it knowing that the basic wii u is selling for only 150 up north.

    • sd

Buy it, Pikmin 3 is amazing, seriously amazing.

  • IBlock

This is pretty cool. But next time, make it $60 instead of $50. In other news…

    • John Raybell

did you just bitch about $50 free dollars, wtf facepalm

      • IBlock

What I was trying to say is that… well… if we get a $60 gift card instead of a $50 one, you (and some other people) CAN GET ANOTHER GAME. GAWD. >=(

  • daeglyth

Hi guys, after reading this article on Wii U I decided to order one at Bestbuy. My experience is outlined below:

In combination with this offer and the Pikmin 3 release, most retailers in my area have sold out of Wii U. I was unable to find a Bestbuy within 100 miles that had one in stock today. I can only imagine they didn’t keep many on hand, though. So not totally convinced this is a Wii U victory yet.

Anyways, I called 1-888-BEST BUY and was able to order one through them. They claimed the $50 gift card would ship separately and that it was through a different company that the card was being offered.

Additionally, I asked if they would price match’s price of $339.99 and they honored it. Bestbuy is really stepping it up with it’s aggressive price matching of major online retailers like newegg and amazon. The shipping was free and will arrive between August 9th and 14th.

After 8% sales tax it came to $367.99. Newegg would not have charged me tax, but with the promo $50 card I still net $22 over the newegg price in total value.

  • MississaugaMaverick

hey guys if you live in Canada there is a good deal at futureshop right now, buy the black wii u and receive pikmin 3 free.
