In a recent interview with the BBC, Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, has had some scathing things to say about Nintendo as a company. The most poignant of those statements is that the Kyoto company “could be on the path to irrelevance.” He believes that handheld gaming devices are becoming an extinct breed in the age of mobile gaming with smartphones and tablets and that Nintendo’s ever shrinking market will spell doom if they don’t adapt. “I don’t think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore. Not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet. Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people – they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over. And now I think the other [consoles] are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important.” It’s interesting to hear an industry veteran’s opinion in Nintendo as a company, but it’s hard to see the likes of handheld gaming and its heavy hitters like Pokemon, the Mario & Luigi RPGs, and Fire Emblem going away anytime soon. local_offer Nintendo wii u stars Further Reading Legendary Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go The cost of Nintendo consoles in today's dollars Wii U gets firmware update Watch the Smash 4 EVO Finals on Disney XD Take a peek at this week’s Nintendo Dow 9 things you probably didn't know about Super Mario Bros. AAAkabob I failed at running a company, so let me give you advice on how to run yours… Magnus Eriksson Thats not very accurate… AAAkabob You are one to talk lol Magnus Eriksson yup Daniel Gonzalez He wasn’t running the company when Atari went on a decline. Lol. You can thank Jack Tramiel for that. fireheartis1 Yah that’s true, but Nolan has always been so high it would have happened sooner or later with him as well. Nintendo is in a way better place than what he’s giving them. Daniel Gonzalez Whether Atari would’ve declined with him running the company is debatable. For all we know, he could have kept it going for years to come, but I guess we’ll never know. Ducked Nolan Bushnell needs to realize who’s really in trouble in the gaming industry. Magnus Eriksson Who is in trouble if not Nintendo? edit: a now I saw the picture 🙂 Ducked lol Zakariyya Al-Quran lol MujuraNoKamen This comment reminded me, everyone seems to think Nintendo is the one on thin ice whereas no one will even mention the perils facing the competition: http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/The+Bowels+of+Trogdor/sony-is-flirting-with-death-and-death-is-showing-interest-261402.phtml XBone has had a tough start yet sites like IGN trash Wii U and say XB1 will do fine and no one seems to think about Sony’s position. Nintenjoe82 I’ve been saying this for ages now. Sony and MS are going for each other. If one succeeds the other may well fail badly. Once word gets out that nobody wants to buy one or the other, the kids will make their minds up and that console will win. IGN and the many PS fans that comment seem to be sure that xbox will be the one to fail due to the bad press, price, kinect, specs etc. but none of that will matter if Kinect 2 comes up with a casual smash hit. The sad thing is that all the people who have been jacking it to the PS4 reveal on youtube all summer will switch sides to xbox and say “I told you so”. Nintyfan Xbox, turn on Wii U. Ducked Xbox: How come I never get turned on Nintyfan Atari comments on obsolete gaming platforms? They should know all about that then! insomniac gotta respect the man but…… i dont agree Daniel Gonzalez I respect Bushnell and what he did for the industry, but can’t agree with him here. All those who believe he ran the company down should really do research, Atari as bought off by Time Warner in 1976 for 28 million, which is well before Atari’s decline. He was gone by 1978 and moved on. With that, he had nothing to do with Atari during it’s twilight years. The more you know. Magnus Eriksson Correct. This is the guy who invented console gaming practically. People dont care about history… Daniel Gonzalez Agreed. There’s information all over the internet about Atari’s history. Not that hard to research. Sdudyoy I can’t agree. Magnus Eriksson Is this really new? I think hes been out with this before too? Daniel Gonzalez I think months ago he said something similar about the Wii U being Nintendo’s end. Magnus Eriksson Yeah, thats it. CEObrainz Nintendo right now are perfectly comfortable with their handheld and will be for the next few years. Maybe, much further down the line, Nintendo will need to rethink some of it’s strategies if it want’s to keep up with the world. However at that point who knows what kind of innovation we’ll have for handheld devices? Johny isn’t that the guy who said that no-one above the age of 10 will pick up the DS ? MICJAM Age of 8 I think. Johny oh haha.. even worse Petri Again with this guy? Though he knows something about being irrelevant. Trying to gain some relevance on the Nintendo bashing train? Derk It never ceases to amaze me how little people value an expert’s opinion. Everything that this man said is accurate to some degree. Basically, other companies that produce more powerful hardware are starting to monopolize and overwhelm the game industry by being an inexpensive everything in one machine… Instantly ipods capture the market for anyone over 12yr old that wants ease, affordability, and a more flexible form of entertainment. If you could merge your 3ds and your phone, you would. The people on this website always say Nintendo is being copied and it is true…but… What happens when Nintendo’s games run out of individuality / relevance in the future? Most of Nintendo’s fans grew up and are naturally starting to appeal to other devices and the newer generations start with these devices from the start. I may or may not agree with him, but I certainly see where he is coming from. Untrentide I do wish my 3DS had more features, i do have a 64gb card so i wish i could at least put a little music on it since i gotta carry it for the streetpasses. Other than that though, the 3DS i find fits the mobile bill just fine. Unless they also made it a phone i don’t see why it needs addition features. Arthur Jarret 3DS can play 3D videos too, you just have to put the video in the right format in 10 minute bits so the software in the Camera app thinks it recorded it itself. Works great and helped me through a 20 hr flight to Indonesia! Saul Strange Wow. Having a rational and articulate comment netted you 7 down-votes?! Lots of fanboys on this site, unbiased and well-observed comments obviously don’t fly with them… I agree with you completely, by the way. Well said. Merrfn His opinion is valid. But everybody thinks it is invalid, making it invalid to the general public. Petri Everyone in a free country has a right for his/her opinion There’s a point with tablets to a degree, they fit well for little children with attention disorders, that get bored of the game in 5 minutes. But I dont think tablets will ever replace dedicated gaming consoles. After a while, tablet games because of the limited inputs, start to all feel the same. wober2 All of these nintendoom articles start to blur together. I get it, nintendo is doomed to hell for all eternity… Meanwhile I am excited for nintendo’s winter game line up. I am more curious what he does “now a days” and if he actually plays games himself? just curious not critical… Ashley King Bushnell got out of Atari in 1978. He founded the company, but it’s not like he was the masthead when the company went down. Daniel Gonzalez Someone who does research. Thank you! howling_wolf1334:[ And what he has doing till today? A silly question but I really dont know Daniel Gonzalez Today, he runs a company called BrainRush. crocodileman94 And he might BrainWash some people with these statements. Daniel Gonzalez Brain Wash Academy Arthur Jarret I would definitely play that game! Guest Because everyone else is… :0 Michael DeVore But was he apart of the board of directors responsible for the last Bankruptcy of Atari? Since he’s been apart of the Board since April 19, 2010, and they filed for bankruptcy around January of this year I’d say it would be safe to say he’s more then a little responsible for not correcting Atari’s failed trajectory. Daniel Gonzalez He was part of the board, yes, but Atari was already on the decline even before he came back. Michael DeVore His job was to provide guidance, and as he put it when he took the job, “I am very excited to be reacquainted with Atari at a time when it is poised to make interesting strides in key growth areas of the games industry”. Clearly he failed in a task he thought was possible. What is the point of listening to a soothsayer that has a poor track record at soothing? He has other bad marks against his predictive prowess as well. Namely “No One Over 8 Will Play DS”. Clearly he has been predicting the fall of Nintendo’s Handheld dominance at any chance he can get. One day he maybe right, but it won’t be something he foresaw, but rather something finally matched his openion. Or is the value of his past reputation worthy of overlooking his more modern mistakes? Daniel Gonzalez Exactly, it’s an opinion. One he’s entitled to have. Sure, he’s made modern mistakes, but I think most here are under the impression that he drove Atari to the ground, which is what I’m addressing as false. Of course he’s made some mistakes with businesses that he’s started after Atari, no one will deny that. However, that wasn’t what I was talking about. Even after he joined Atari, no one expected him to make any impact and I sure didn’t think so either. Atari has been declining and it’s a shame to see the name tarnished. Kristian Kouvo There’s a pattern. Every time something cool is released for Wii U – or sales goes up for a while, people are cheering and say Nintendo rules. But wait few weeks, if nothing happens in some time people go back talking shit about Nintendo again. Try to make up your mind already. I stay behind Wii U and Nintendo 100%, even on a bad day. Their systems are great nevertheless! Great systems and consoles need our support, not the backstabbing! wober2 Its hard because every system has things to critique. I just wish it did not end in doom every time. I support nintendo, they bring diversity to the game industry. They seemingly suck at launches but make games and consoles that last decades now. Clel Oh, the irony ezquimacore His opinion is very irrelevant right now…seems like everybody has a beef with Nintendo. Magnus Eriksson This is actually kind of old news. He was quite early out with this. Truthteller He is right – but I called it about a year ago! Magnus Eriksson Hows your homophobia treat you? howling_wolf1334:[ Blah blah blah… -Im badass- Blah blah blah… Donaald And you’re also irrelevant, what a coincidence! JBeauregard Bushnell is irrelevant. Steve While I’d like to believe that dedicated handheld gaming systems is still dominant, I’m afraid this man may have a point. These smartphones and tablets are getting more powerful at every release. Additionally, there are already phones in the market capable of stereoscopic 3D. So, it is not a matter of if, but when. CyanideInsanity These devices have the same issues as PCs; there are too many permutations. Instead of games getting more efficient and keeping the same hardware for optimal performance, hardware upgrades are necessary to keep up. howling_wolf1334:[ Heck! Nope!!! No one trust in this mr!!! Magnus Eriksson No, why listen to the guy who invented videogaming? Nintenjoe82 Do you mean the inventor of the CRT or the guys that filed the first patent for a video game? Magnus Eriksson The first to make it successful, yes. yuoma You’ve gotta be the guy’s biggest fan. Daniel Gonzalez He was a pioneer, but he didn’t create the concept of video games. That was actually Ralph Baer with the Magnavox Odyssey back in 1972. Magnus Eriksson Yup, you are right. He didnt. But Magnavox Odyssey never got very popular. Pong did. And definitly had more impact on the industry. But thats historical details. Daniel Gonzalez True. Sad thing is, most people don’t even know he was the founder of video games and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Magnus Eriksson Hehe! I had a Amiga500 as a kid (had C64 too before), one of my friends had an Atari STE. We had our fights about which machine that was the best. I pulled the game card all the time, he pulled the music card (Atari was a really good music machine with 16 instead of four channels), and that it was 1 MHz faster, had a stronger basic memory RAM (I think), and was invented by the great Nolan Bushnell, the creator of videogaming 😀 david jarman Good ol’ c64. I had cartridges, floppies and cassette taps with games. I had the original pong cabinet. Magnus Eriksson I had only cassette tapes. And it was faster to rewind them with a pencil than with the cassette player. I was happy when I saw Wii had added C64 games to their Virtual Console, but sadly the catalouge never went very interesting. And now they seem to have removed it. I had some small hopes that we would see Virtual Consoling with old Amiga games on Wii U, but that hope is pretty much gone now. To slow releases on NES and SNES just killed the hope 😀 david jarman Lol, glad to know that I’m not the only one rewinding games with a pencil. Yeah, I was hoping the catalog would grow, but it didnt. I’m hoping they will bring turbographix over to the wii u vc and some GameCube games like beyond good and evil and second sight. david jarman He’s no pioneer! He’s a hermit! Look at him! It’s old Ben Kenobi! He went to my Junior high(north Davis jr high) in clearfield, Utah. yuoma That’s right!!! no one knows more about modern airplanes than the Wright Brothers. Magnus Eriksson Nah, not comparable really. yuoma true story. this guy didn’t actually invent video games. I stand corrected. Magnus Eriksson He made it popular. Without him videogaming might not have been what it is today. yuoma yes. he might have known what he was talking about 100 years ago. sadly, he’s still talking. Nintenjoe82 I wish I was on a path to irrelevance if it means I start with $12Bn in assets, the most valuable IP of the last console generation, the No.1 handheld and a profitable company. This man said the DS would fail to sell to anyone over 6. I’m pretty sure Bushnell has had his words distorted into some sort of anti-Nintendo sentiment. He was probably just trying to sell his own stuff or say a worst case scenario for Nintendo in modern gaming, after-all he knows all there is to know about losing relevance. Magnus Eriksson Why not use google instead of guessing when you clearly not know what you are talking about? What you say now is practically like saying that its Miyamotos fault that Nintendo is failing. Nintenjoe82 because google is too much effort.? Sorry he said nobody over the age of 8 will buy a DS. In 2010 Magnus Eriksson Well, Nintendo broke a deal with Sony and got into a short partnership with Phillips. That is the reason that Playstation exists today. What is actually your point? That people can make mistakes? Nintenjoe82 My point is that I don’t believe it’s worth getting riled with something that Nolan Bushnell has said because he probably didn’t want Nintendo to be the focus of what he was talking about, he just offered his opinion on their position during an interview. I was also adding that he is not infallible hence the reference to his DS comments and the fact that Nintendo is in such a strong financial position that they can buy back their relevance. Magnus Eriksson I dont think he have anything against Nintendo. I think he just speaks his mind. Nintenjoe82 Exactly. Nobody can say anything now without it being turned into an “anti-Nintendo” statement. Magnus Eriksson Ok, maybe I misunderstood your post. Sorry bout that. 🙂 Arthur Jarret I can. I’m special. Nintenjoe82 How dare you say that about Nintendo! Arthur Jarret Look at the pretty monkey… just look at the pretty monkey… and huh? the monkey is gone?! Go find the monkey! Daniel Gonzalez You do know that he wasn’t running Atari when they declined, right? Nintenjoe82 Yes, I never said anything about Atari. In the interview he explains what he blames for the demise of Atari. My point is that they’re in a pretty good starting position to avoid becoming irrelevant. I just think his interview was to promote Oculus Rift, educational software tools and other things but has been used as click bait because he said a couple of things about Nintendo that nobody wanted to hear. Daniel Gonzalez Well, not everyone will like his opinion of Nintendo, but I still respect the guy nonetheless. At the end of the day, no one gets hurt. Truthteller Nintendo does not have the most valuable IP. Stop living in the 80’s. Regan is dead. Nintenjoe82 They were knocking out gamecube games when their rivals were actually pushing the boundaries graphically. How can you not see the value in that? Schultz38 Regan…? *Reagan, perhaps? Donaald Then why does people keep buying Zelda and Mario games? Then why Animal Crossing outsold everything else for more than two months? Come on, lets see you damage control how once you’ve been exposed. Ace J and here comes this punk ass again… Arthur Jarret Nooooo! Not Regan! I loved Regan! What happened to him… why… why did he have to gooo??? (By the way, the 80’s were awesome. A great period for metal music… nowadays metal has turned to some kind of semi-gothic emo crap. I think we’d be better off staying in the 80’s) Magnus Eriksson Are you thinking a lot about that subject? If its healthy or unhealthy to suck dicks? Does that thought make you angry? Afraid? Sad? A bit tingeling sensation maybe? 🙂 Hows does the thought of sexual intercourse between to men make you feel? david jarman As much as people would like to believe that. I disagree. I used to love to play games on my smartphone, but it just doesn’t replace the feel of a console or a hand held with real controls mixed in with touch controls. I surf the Internet and watch videos more then anything. Yoshifan3 This is coming from bushnell. that is all you need to know. Isaac Franco Handheld consoles no longer relevant? Really?? Yeah sure… ItzameyaToad Its simple, dedicated handheld gaming is going nowhere anytime soon and he seems to be blinded by wanting to believe the hype around smart devices. No disrespect to a veteran of the gaming industry but they aren’t free from making stupid comments from time to time and this is one of them. To think that people will buy an ipone,Ipad or ipod touch soley for the intent on playing games is stupid. Anyone can see the mobile app market is in a decline and the dedicated gaming handheld market is growing with more devs switching to 3DS and Vita to actually be recognized and make money. Now im not saying that he is for sure doing this but im sure Bushnell still has a soft spot for Atari and probably still has stock in Atari so we should look at what Atari have pushed alot for over the past few years. Mobile phone apps for IOS, Android, Tablet as well as console games here and there. I just find it strange he promotes Apps and mobile gaming when that is the very thing Atari is focusing on. Just thought that was more than a coincidence. Gollums Speaking of Irrelevant….. *cough* Atari *cough* Daniel Gonzalez He wasn’t part of Atari when it was driven to the ground. You can blame Jack Tramiel for that. This is why research helps. Arthur Jarret Wow, if I were you I’d just copy and paste the same response everywhere… it seems like too much effort to keep explaining this. Daniel Gonzalez Hahaha. I agree. Though, I don’t usually mind. Petri If Nintendo really can kick off Wii U, it might be to their advantage to play catch up with the twin sisters. Hardware gap can only get smaller, and unless Sony runs out of money, or MS does not give up, I think all 3 will be there until the end of gaming or zombie apocalypse. So next consoles we see might only look different on paper, but not on eye. There are some things Nintendo still needs to work on, but they can pretty much fix those this generation, if they really try. Wii U is same kind of “failure” as every Nintendo console before it, and every Nintendo console after it. Sure, it might not sell as well as Wii and 3DS might not sell as well as DS. But as long as Nintendo does not can them and are able to make them profitable, they’re not failures. That dude Your comment is on the path of irrelevence!! Arthur Jarret Hmm… twin sisters… Petri Yes, I was about to exit console gaming, since neither Sony or MS weren’t offering anything I couldn’t get on PC. Pretty much everything they do and have to offer, are the same. Sure there might be some interesting exclusives on both, but in the end, nothing that cant be had on PC. So far Nintendo has only promised to offer me things I cant have on any other platform. And as long as Nintendo does not screw me over, I’ll be happy. Arthur Jarret I’d love for the twin sisters to screw me over, though. Reggie… not so much. I really don’t care how ready his body is. Kriffix If this guy is right then why is the 3DS doing so well? There’s two in one Shampoo and Conditioner, but I prefer them separately to more effectively keep my hair dandruff free! It doesn’t mean either one as a separate product has to disappear from the shelves. Merrfn Or does it? Arthur Jarret I don’t have hair. Therefore, all shampoo is irrelevant and should disappear from store shelves. I don’t have any friends either – so why get a portable with phone functions? 3DS ftw! Ducked This man hates Japanese gaming consoles. Don’t believe me? He complements Microsoft and the Xbox One, but he goes on slamming the Wii U and PlayStation 4. Donaald After all, he knows a lot about irrelevance. Boss Hoss He’s Right Zorpix You think Nintendo is doomed? Good so does everyone. Get in line. Magnus Eriksson I dont think he thinks Nintendo is doomed, and nobody else think so either… Well, with a possible exception of Truthteller here. He only made a remark on the Wii U when it was launched, and he was asked about the same thing again. This guy is not a stupid person. This guy is a legend in the videogame industry on pair with Miyamoto. Zorpix never said he was stupid. I’m just saying Nintendo wont become irrelevant like he thinks Arthur Jarret Everything not about elephants is irrelephant. Zorpix I am irrelephant 🙁 Arthur Jarret I’m not… I should really try a strict diet, though Zorpix Just never forget it 😉 yuoma HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! on par with Miyamoto. ouch, my sides!! Donaald I don’t think Nintendo is doomed, to me this whole doom and gloom is more wishful thinking than anything else. Ace J did this dude really say that handhelds are becoming extinct??!! has he even seen the sales of the 3DS??? man oh man is he going to eat shit when pokemon x and y come out… DragonSilths Nintendo kicked Atari’s ass back then. Doesnt know what he’s talking about. To doubt Nintendo’s survival is to be a fool. Nintendo is like a cockroach. They would survive a nuclear bomb lol. Gotallofthem You know he has hatred towards the company that put his company into irrelevance. DragonSilths Yup. Daniel Gonzalez Which company may that be? If you mean Atari, I would have to say you’re incorrect since he left Atari 7 years before Nintendo hit the North American market. Therefore, he didn’t put his former company into irrelevance. oontz you obviously don’t know your video game history. DVE Last time I checked 3ds(DS in general) is outselling everything xD Madmagican Wait, why is this relevant? Atari barely even makes games anymore Mochlum He’s one to talk sinnce he’s founder of Atari. NkoSekirei seriously who believes wat this guy says after the E.T. scandal on atari Daniel Gonzalez He wasn’t part of the company when E.T. released. That one was on TIme Warner who bought Atari from Bushnell, who left Atari in 1978. Merrfn So much misconception… Daniel Gonzalez By whom? Lol. Merrfn THE ILLUMINATI! THEY CORRUPTED THEIR SOULS! http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/conspiracy.gif Daniel Gonzalez 😛 Daniel Gonzalez He founded it, but he left the company in 1978, well before it went bankrupt many years later. People get this one wrong quite often. Mochlum I know, but I’d probably bitter at the company that ran my company out of business. Daniel Gonzalez Nintendo never ran them down lol. I don’t know why most think that. Jack Tramiel ran them down with his poor business decisions, like moving Atari into the computer market for example, which was primitive then. I’d say if Atari had someone who knew how to run it efficiently, it could’ve been a different story. Unfortunately, we’ll never know what could of been if Bushnell was running Atari all these years. Ross Brocklesby Sorry fella but as long as Nintendo has exclusives like mario, pokemon and Zelda (to name a few) they arnt going nowhere. Pokemon x and y will wipe the floor with any release coming out at the same time. If any company needs to be worried its Microsoft. It has two cheaper consoles going against it, two companies that have a handheld market and Microsoft doesn’t. It’s exclusives are running out. Just my opinion but this gen will be Sony and Nintendo in that order. Guest I agree with everything except the Microsoft needing to be worried. All Microsoft needs to do is convince people why Kinect is worth an extra $100/200. Sony should be the ones worried. If the PS4 isn’t a success then they are done with the video game industry, I mean they have lost so much money as it is that PS4 must be a success/profitable.And IMO Microsoft has plenty of IP’s at it’s disposal they just need to bring them out. In the end price may effect the sales of each console a little bit but it will really come down to the games and what each console has to offer and from the looks of it IMO the Xbox One has better games than PS4, so my money is on Xbox One. So really only one company needs to truely be worried about PS4’s success and thats Sony. Ross Brocklesby Sonys ps4 will be cheaper and equivalent spec to Xbone. On this I think Sony will be fine. Financially Sony are in so much debt so you may be right only time will tell. Personally I think Microsoft are going to have a problem like Nintendo but on a bigger scale. Nintendo are convincing people that its gamepad and tech is worth the money and that its not an add on for the wii (if ninty had bothered to advertise they wouldn’t be in this mess) but Microsoft have to convince people kinect is worth the extra £100 on a console that costs more than ps4, and £200 more than the WiiU and has more exclusive content than any games company around today. Wayne Beck While I agree that Microsoft has the tougher sell, you have to remember that Microsoft has an infinite supply of money and have readily acknowledged that they are willing to not make a profit, just to keep their products in peoples houses. Sony on the other hand is practically broke. If the PS4 doesn’t make money, Sony is not going to risk the music and movie business for video games. Ross Brocklesby Either way this Nolan guy is talking out his arse if he thinks Nintendo are going anywhere. How can a company that is in the Black become irrelivent. Nintendo is a success already purely because the economic climate hasn’t really bothered it. Sure they could do with spending some of that cash right now on getting sales up but that’s another topic. MujuraNoKamen oh FFS not this “mobile is dominating” bullshit again. I’m aware it’s a growing market but after all the speculation that it would take over, we’re not seeing much proof; When 3DS was announced we had the normal “Nintendo’s last console” shit-storm. After the launch took a dive it was “we told you it can’t compete with tablets” then it picked up and went on to outsell the DS’s (best selling console ever) 1st year sales in its first year. Then of course we had the “it’ll be beaten by Vita” argument and well… look how that’s ended. “the 12-and-under is not nearly as important.” well the sales figures say otherwise, it’s killing Vita and has been the worlds number 1 console for some time now and Pokemon and new Zelda are going to keep it like that so that pretty much assures Nintendo’s dominance let alone relevance. Nicolas Dorion Yes, because the one who thought E.T. was a profitable product (and almost single-handeldly caused the second videogame crash) knows what’s good for the industry and what’s not Jonathan Dogey Nolan doesn’t really offer a solution for Nintendo that makes sense. Seems like he’s implying there should some kind of Nintendo phone or tablet. But Nintendo would just look foolush doing that. Maybe the answer is obvious: Maybe Nintendo is prolonging the inevitable fate of following in SEGA’s footsteps. Gotallofthem So they have the top selling systems of before Wii and DSi, then they produce the 3ds that is picking up in sales and selling like hot cakes after a slow start, and they have the WiiU that is doing not so grate and your saying because of 1 system, one Fen system, they should go software only? Really ? Really? Did you fall on your head one to many times? Ace J umm are you retarded? your comment doesn’t make any sense. not even a lick of sense. therealruben1 Two letters to shut him up:E.T. NintenFan2013 Does he remember what happened to his company?! He shouldn’t be giving opinions STFU man just STFU. Akatosh Maybe a looooong time in the future, but right now the 3DS is doing pretty well. Heck, it’s being enough of a profit maker to even hold up is brother, Wii U until it grows a backbone. devmiles i hate to say it but i have to agree on the scepsis towards nintendo. with their products and games i also get the feeling they are pretty much nailed with the younger audience but they loose the older gamers (12 +). we won’t have no final fantasy, bioshock, uncharted, mass effect, skyrim, crysis, farcry, gta5, halo, gears of war.. or other serious franchises on a wii-u since the developers have dropped on nintendo due to whatever difficulties.. the majority of the serious ‘high budget aimed towards older gamers’ games will be found at ps4 and xbox one. nintendo seems to go it’s own way which is ok and respectable but it will almost become a niche market. you buy a nintendo if you want to play some good ol’ mario with your friends. i feel it is almost going that way. the wii did have some good rpg’s and games at the end but eventhough i have a wii-u i remain very sceptical and i have the feeling that nintendo doesn’t even know where they are going and developers are seeing this and loose faith. ofcourse nintendo will release their own games like SSB, donkey kong, mario 3d world, will also be succesful but so on their own.. you get a wii-u, u have these games and then what? get a bunch of old redundant VC console to the side? the stack of ps3 and already announced ps4 games are endless, spot on with marketing, i already see commercials on tv..i see no wii-u or 3ds commercials on tv..it remains silent and once in a while we have a silly nintendo direct. where is starfox, mario galaxy, metroid prime and a really good zelda (i don’t count windwaker as something new) when you need it so hard.. what happened to that zelda tech demo? why are we so short on the most magical software nintendo can make? what is the issue? why focus on a stupid 2ds? come on.. november is on it’s way for sony .. and super mario 3d world is not gonna change a darn thing nintendo 🙁 Wayne Beck I’m afraid you are the niche gamer my friend. The games Nintendo is releasing this year are they’re best selling franchises. The best selling franchises in the world. The ones that do 10 million+ sales. They have never targeted the desperate for blood and bullets audience that are obsessed with the games you mentioned. They make games that appeal to a broader audience and they target software that fits in to their business. They are not going to abandon thirty years of success for a small, albeit loud, fraction of the gaming population. devmiles their best selling franchises are just not as good as they used to be, at least for me just not have that mindblowing impact no more. rushed or looks to much like 3ds versions that we’ve played already. mario 64, mario galaxy, zelda OOT, those still remain forever top ranking games. in the NES and SNES era the support was so big, so many variety aside the nintendo franchises, so many space shooters or other obscure games…see where i’m going? i feel nintendo is narrowing instead of gathering and opening up. they are surely able (also in funds) to hold up their market no doubt.. but the young little gamers become older gamers and in 1994 sony jumped in that market with highly succes till this day. from what i see now what will come out on wii-u..i’m not that very mindblowingly impressed like when i did my first steps in mario 64 or galaxy or played zelda OOT Rhinodude Wow they’re just bagging on Nintendo criticizing what everyone thinks of Nintendo that oh it’s for 12 year old. Yet they don’t seem to realize most of those twelve year olds that grew up still play nintendo as do a lot more people. It’s so annoying how people just say that. Why don’t they criticize other companies for copying Nintendo with its motion controls and now it’s touch screen. Oh Nintendo makes a sensor bar for motion sensed game. Microsoft lets make a kinect. Sony”lets just copy it altogether but name it something else. Why don’t people just criticize that instead of being total asses on Nintendo?! Billy Kostyra Nolan Go Home ! you’re drunk Stephen Davis Old news Sharingan To: Nolan Bushnell Just go home and play your Pong on an Ipad. And stay irrelevant from the Video game industry like what you were for the past couple of years. From: A Handheld Nintendo Fan. Michael Hancock “X” will be a Wii U exclusive. It also appears to be the best game ever created. Your argument is invalid. Martijn Plasmans Saying a game will be the best game ever created, based on a short trailer, is a no no. Arthur Jarret In that case, I feel obliged to join in: X will be the best game ever created. Michael Hancock Baten Kaitos was a masterpiece of high fantasy. Xenosaga was an epic space opera. Xenoblade was Monolith’s Magnum opus. “X” is obviously Xenoblade evolved, in HD and with the ability to play with your friends. Did I mention the dinosaurs? Wiiluigi Bitter old man. Kristian Kouvo Games for phones are just generic, casual crap – and will never take off the same way than handheld gaming does. Handheld consoles are _dedicated systems_ made for gaming software (while phones are just generic whatever devices for little bit of everything). For example the DS-family has some true spectacular games with hi-level tweaking and use of the system. So, Nolan – no. Go back to sleep. Sylux Nintendo becoming irrelevant? lol Atari became irrelevant 20 years ago. He has a point on mobile gaming maybe but irrelevant is the overstatement of the 21st century. Destructonator101 Why would anyone even listen to the old and sad retired fuck? Saul Strange Nah. He can’t predict that by only looking at Nintendo’s current hardware, it’s what they do NEXT that will determine whether Nintendo are sliding into irrelevance or not. All of the new home consoles have an unknown future in terms of sales and market interest, some bad marketing and debatable hardware decisions with Wii U means you can’t read too much into it right now. Irrelevance is not dictated by one (currently) underperforming product (unless it’s such a failure that it financially sinks the company, which the Wii U isn’t), there needs to be a succession, a pattern of consumer disinterest. 3DS is doing very well indeed. It’s not quite got the selling power of the original DS, which was a phenomenon, due to mobile and tablet gaming taking away a chunk of the market, but not enough to stop it selling very well. But, Android and iOS gaming is likely to get even bigger in the years to come, so it’s all about how Nintendo reacts to the mobile and tablet gaming market with their NEXT portable device, then we can see if they can adapt or not. I can’t see another dedicated handheld console ever reaching DS sales figures again. This will NEVER happen, but it would be very interesting if Nintendo could cut a deal with Apple (or Samsung, etc) with their next portable console / device. Amalgamate a smartphone with a Nintendo handheld, Apple keeps the money from the hardware, Nintendo keeps all the game licensing royalties. It could have all the Nintendo games and all the iOS/App Store games on one device. Figuring out how to differentiate the App Store games and eShop games might be tricky, for the customers as well as the companies. But making the hardware cost effective would be the hardest part I guess… No, Nintendo giving up hardware profits would be the hard part! lol It will be interesting to see what Nintendo do next, that’s for sure.
