Feb 28th, 2013

Yesterday we revealed that the next title in the Assassin’s Creed series would be Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The game takes place in the early 18th century Caribbean, where players will assume control of Edward Kenway–Haytham Kenway’s father. The game’s box art has been officially unveiled today as you can see above. Along with this reveal platforms were officially announced and among those is the Wii U.

The game will likely focus heavily on naval combat as that was one area in which Assassin’s Creed 3 stood out over the other titles in the series. For those of you who wanted more, you’re about to get it. Story-wise nothing is known yet, but it’s unusual for the Assassin’s Creed series to head backwards in time instead of forwards. No release date has been announced, but we’ll keep you up to date with more information.

  • Zelly Jeffers

Yes, please! I’ll even eat all my veggies.

  • mabhlink

I’ll buy it, the pirate idea seems nice

  • Jimmy D. Fugate

Wow Ubisoft really meant that they would show support for Wii U when they said it. Glad they kept their word. Can’t wait for Watch Dogs & Rayman!

    • Zelly Jeffers

I’m glad they see the potential of the system and isn’t shying away from it.

      • Nintedward

Agreed. Ubisoft’s strong support of the Wiiu could help the way other third party devs look at the system!  The more the merrier.

        • AkaLink77

          Yah and i love how in the box art, they put “Black Flag” in red txt. X }

          • Nintedward

lmao! didn’t notice that until now XD .

Assassins creed 3! : Black (red) flag!!!!!!

          • Grammar Nazi 2000

            Assasin’s Creed FOUR

        • Jimmy D. Fugate

All we need now is GTA 5, Destiny, Left 4 Dead 3 (which Valve stated may come on the Wii U) and Mortal Kombat. I would die of happiness.

          • Zelly Jeffers

            Oh noes! Jimmy, don’t die!

            I thought I heard Destiny was coming to Wii U. I’d love GTA V, I won’t lie.

          • michael546k

Also bioshock infinite and maybe remember me (why can’t 2k just announce bioshock for Wii U?!)

          • Grammar Nazi 2000

Is Journey owned by Sony? I guess so because no one has suggested THAT coming to Wii U.

  • this this freakin’ epic!!!

  • Sdudyoy

Will it have a working multiplayer server on the Wii u version?!

  • im glad they do it for wii u,and this time its not gonna be a port 🙂

    • Nintedward

It is gunna be a port :S . I’m pretty sure Wiiu isn’t the lead development platform for AC4. It’s most likely the 360… With PS3 getting a slightly worse version , Wiiu maybe getting a slightly better version (at least it should do) and PS4 , PC , 720?  getting a PC build of the game…

      •  i mean this time they will have more time than they had with ACIII With Wii u.

        • Nintedward

Yeah!  Wiiu SHOULD be an awesome version that shames the PS3 and 360 version. More memory and a more capably GPU means like Need for speed most wanted , they should be able to load in the PC textures at 720p , relatively easily.

If the 360 version is 1 and the PC version 10 , the Wiiu should be at least 3 if they put a lot of effort in.

But AC3 for Wiiu was EXACTLY the same as 360 version. The Wiiu SHOULD look better , but Ubisoft might just port the 360 version of black flag to Wiiu again…

      • guest

actually the main platform would be the pc, the console versions are ports.

        • mchelski

couldn’t agree more, with ps4 going x86 they wll probably make a pc version and port for the rest

      • I doubt it’ll go to PS360 because the new consoles will be out by then.

        • Yeah, I think they might just be place holders for the meantime and maybe next monday they’ll announce the game on PS4, probably not 720 though since it hasn’t been announced yet but who knows.

      • NkoSekirei

dude wii u puts 360 and ps3 to shame wen it comes to power it runs on 2011 specs while ps3 and 360 runs on around 2006 to 2007 specs and so wii u version wont be a port and also the developer that making watch dogs said if they do make watch dogs for ps3 and 360 they be scaled down versions while wii u,pc,ps4 and 720 will be better versions

        • BellsGhost

PS4 and Nextbox will be leaps ahead of Wii U version. Wii U will get the worst of next gen. Wii U is only SLIGHTLY more powerful than PS3/360.

          •  you are cheap!

          • NkoSekirei

not quite dude if u have been reading more closely they might be slightly stronger but nothing more and even reggie said wii u is capable of competing against ps4 and 720.

          • BellsGhost

Reggie said that when there was yet no concrete information on either PS4 or the Netbox. Reggie spoke out of his ass and only said that to calm the naysayers down, but we all know that statement is false.

          • ConCity Soldier

            You a hater!

          • He isn’t a hater, he didn’t say anything about anything about the Wii U or Nintendo. He is just stating the fact that Reggie was talking about that when the PS4 and NexBox specs weren’t released at the time so really he has been proven false.

I do see the Wii U not falling behind as much as the Wii was last gen but it will be the less powerful system of the next gen but it doesn’t mean its going to fail. Hell, I’ve started up an indie video game company and we’d love to make games for Wii U and many other platforms.

          • Noah Umana

i’m just saying, nintendo has a lot to offer, nfc, 7 inch screen, the ability to lower console to $250.00, can also change hard drive to ssd rather then hdd, all wii games are playable, the option to use 3 type of controllers, if they make a portable console like a super 3ds, so it will do the same as ps vita, and graphic will almost be the same as the other console, i’m just saying you don’t have to believe me.

          • Petri

I dont think you would benefit out of ssd hd on usb 2.0…
Usb 3.0 and lan port would be only things I would have wished for wii u. But I agree on most points, Nintendo will most definitely announce price cut for wii u when MSony announce their consoles and +500$ price tags.

          • NkoSekirei

yes he did confirmed it u idiot

      • BellsGhost

Nope. PS3 always better than Wii U versions. Wii U is cheap plastic hardware.

        • NkoSekirei

a sony troll go back to ps4daily were u belong u douche

          • BellsGhost

Actually, Iown both a PS3 and a 360.  Hahaha!  Funny how Nintendrones really hate Sony.  So sad.

          • ConCity Soldier

            I own a Wii U & a PS3.

          • SoulSilverZero

            BellsGhost = /Troll.

Just helping Laud unless he already labed him.

Wow! Already ACIV? AWESOME! Well Ubisoft, I’m glad you guys are shwowing support for the Wii U. Watch Dogs, Assassins Creed III, Rayman Legends, and a lot more, now this? Good job!

    • Grammar Nazi 2000

      Don’t. Forget. ZombiU.

  • Mr. Nick

Is Jack Sparrow going to be in it?

    • SoulSilverZero

Is that guy from the You are a pirate meme going to be in the game

      • thesupertomek

        You are kidding, right?

  • DragonSilths

Nope sorry Ubisoft, after the Rayman bullshit I have no interest in getting any game of yous again.

    • Scott Duperree

I don’t know if you are a nintendo fan or not, but if you are then what I will write next probably will make a little sense.  Ubisoft has obviously been the most willing major 3rd part publisher to take the lead in supporting Wii U.  I for one support that from a stance, being a Wii U owner.

      • Rinslowe

        I agree,

Looking at it from one perspective I can totally see where Rey Hardy is coming from, and I will be boycotting Rayman because of that. A rough but personal decision.
I can also totally relate to what you’re putting across in that Ubisoft are actively supporting Wii U by allowing their big budget ports to be released in the first place.
But like anything there’s more to it. AC3 looks gorgeous on Wii U and I honestly don’t know why such sites like EG make such a big deal out of a fractional difference in framerates between systems because it’s not noticeable actually, (I have played all versions except PC) but my point is I know Wii U has more potential and I can over look AC3 as a release port. But if Ubisoft aren’t willing to truly optimise their upcoming ports & rumoured ports (Splinter Cell etc…) for Wii U then I would then have to wait and see which version is best before deciding to lay down hard earned cash…

Wii U has more potential to be closer in presentation and performance to the PC version rather than current consoles. Lets see that in the upcoming ports, not just carbon copies of the 360 version…

        • Scott Duperree

I’m actually thinking of native Wii U games such as Watch Dogs, which could be one of the top games this year, and ACIV, than the ports, though those are nice too.  We are still waiting for other major studios to start announcing true games for the Wii U.

    • Scott is right about that, it’s a personal choice I guess. I’m not happy about the delay either, but compared to pretty much all other third parties Ubi IS supporting WiiU, one delay Rayman, yes that sucks indeed, but with this 2nd announcement in as many weeks which IS coming to Wiiu, I can put myself to forgiving them maybe you should too… Just my two cents though.

Ubi  says that Watchdogs IS coming to WiiU, ACIV IS coming to WiiU, Rayman IS STILL coming to WiiU although being it at a much later time.

If I look at other third parties, all they say is blahblah IS NOT coming to WiiU (THQ, Konami, EA etc.) be it because they have been in development for some time or not they all say IS NOT coming to WiiU.

Ubisoft seemingly does give full support to WiiU. And we should appreciate it. Again my two cents. For me they are forgiven.

      • DragonSilths

I dont support ANY 3rd party dev. On ANY system. Only exception is Namco Bandai with their Tales games.

    • Petri

Well… watch dogs, this, and if they get splinter cell too, kind of out weights Rayman, I still wont be getting Rayman at launch in September. But maybe at some point.

  • Super Buu

I can’t believe there are still people who can’t get over the Rayman Legends thing. Anyways, good job, Ubi.

    • WiiUltra

Ya I feel bad for them. They just like holding grudges. I hope they find the positive things about Ubi, like all the games they are throwing at the Wii U. They have given the most support.

  • tooby77

Coming to wii u by fall 2015. 🙂

    • Petri

And then we remember that ubisoft is hell bent on simultaneous releases, ah the outcry shit storm.

    • Nintedward

It will launch on the same day as other platforms. Infact the Wiiu version of AC3 even launched before the PC version…

      • tooby77

Didnt realy ment wii u will be behind with release. Amazing games seems to come out late and we just go nuts of waiting. I have 4 ubisoft games already and planning to buy a few more this year.

        • Petri

I think ubisoft can push it to early/mid 2014, and still make the game decent.
I guess deveploment for this started right after AC3 release.

        • Arthur Jarret

           Only 4? I have 100s of ubisoft games…

          • tooby77

Cool if u have 100s ubisoft games. Curious wich 100s u have. Sry i was wrong, got 5. And i thought u understood i ment on the console that this forum is about

  • FackMaaii

    Great news!

  • This year is gonna be epic for Nintendo!! pikmin, smash bros, project cars, etc.

    • Genesect4ssb4

Smash Bros at the earliest wil be out in Spring 2014 or Summer 2014

      • NkoSekirei

and probably the new hd zelda too

  • DemonRoach

Now I know that I don’t need to buy AC3

    • ConCity Soldier

Or u could buy Assassins Creed 3 for the experience.

  • Bill Bong

Will we still be talking about the Wii U when his comes out?

    • Petri

      I guess you will be?

AC3 is great on the U, and the sea battles are f-ing awesome. I can’t wait for this game, a most have game in my eyes for the U.

  • mikeloveswiiu

  • I agree ac3 is fantastic on the wii u great graphics alot of detail. Will be buying number four for sure.

    • BellsGhost

      AC3 is better on PS3/360.

      • ConCity Soldier

        Better how?

      • Nintedward

Not really. Graphically the PS3 version is the worst , with the Wiiu and 360 version looking exactly the same.  The Wiiu framerate bounces between 25-30FPS.  But so do the PS3 and 360 version also….

        • NkoSekirei

assassin creed 4 will be pushing the wii u power to the max along with watch dogs,xenoblade2,bayonetta2 and other big titles as well.

  • Johny

hmm smart move ubisoft. gotta say. you really pushed the buttons that would most likely work. gotta admit you kinda DID make up to a lot of people with this announcement.

announcing your huge next game right away for a wii u was a very smart and sneaky marketing move to make up to wii u players 😉

  • i am so glad it is for wii U since that is all i have for a console

    • BellsGhost

      Woah, sucks to be you.

      • Nintedward

Could be worse for him. At least he has the best console out 😛

    • Grammar Nazi 2000

If you get a 3DS, get:

      Super Mario 3D Land
      Fire Emblem: Awakening
      Mario Kart 7
      Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon
and Pokemon X or Pokemon Y when they come out in October.

  • Rinslowe

We started the franchise in a somewhat mysterious characters boots, and lived out the fantasy of being an Assassin through the narrative of his life. Then we were introduced to other characters like Ezio who at first seemed only passable in believability, that was until the game started shooting out more tidbits about the background lore of the Assassins universe and the part he played in it. Then they gave us (what is a great game in it’s own right) a new set of characters which were even more difficult to relate too, even though we shared more with them in terms of relate’able similarities, mainly due to closeness in time period…
And Desmond is *SPOILER… So now it seems Ubisoft have taken the same engine, which was brilliant and one of the staple aspects of AC3, being naval warfare and based an entire game around it. This time it seems they want to further flesh out the origins of the Assassin turned *SPOILER, Haytham Kenway by stepping us in the shoes of his pirate father?
I love this franchise and hope that I am wrong about this game being an excuse to cash it in big while AC3 is still a fresh prospect. Or perhaps originally AC3 was much larger and a more ambitious title limited by current medium and this game has been expanded from a simple dlc overnight almost…

  • Mark Thom

  • Holy hell! I’m so excited!!!!

  • Retro Cool

I kind of wish they would bring the first two + to the wii u

  • InterTreble

Where are people talking about AC4 shouldn’t be released on Wii U?! 😉 Together with those ones saying the same for Watch Dogs! LOL! What an EPIC WIN!!! XD

  • lol these delusional fanboys think that ubisoft will save the wiiu. the wii u version will be lucky to sell 100k while the other versions will easily sell 3M each. RIP wiiu

  • Dylan Clark

really another game??! These guys are on a role AC3 was in 2012 i guess this will be in 2014?

  • SoulSilverZero

    BeanerSlayer = /Troll

I know it’s Laud’s job but I just want to help him. :3
