Eiji Aonuma has gone on record in the past stating the newest Zelda Wii U title should be a more open world, similar to the original Zelda on NES. Despite A Link Between Worlds coming out last year with the ability to visit dungeons in any order you choose, rather than being sent there, Aonuma says the title was still too linear for his liking. “The recent Zelda games have been rather linear, as I thought players didn’t like getting lost, wondering what to do, or where to go. However, I’ve come to question this ‘traditional’ approach as I felt that we couldn’t gain the sense of wonder that existed in the original Legend of Zelda, in which you made unexpected encounters and where what used to be impossible would suddenly become possible.” “We will, of course, continue to question and reconsider the approaches we have taken in the past without any reservations.” This statement feeds into the rumor that the next Zelda title for Wii U could be the most open world game we’ve seen yet, which could be a breath of fresh air for the series. And then we need a fantastic story, and Zelda always has a good one, i felt like ALBW story was a bit lacking, but it was good. I hope it will show of how capeble Wii U is, i am a TP fan, but i feel like its color palet was to grey, so if they could make a more colorful version of it, i would be really happy. Squid A Link Between Worlds has a good story, it wasn’t all that story based though, like Link to the past, and it’s dungeon setting is great too, and clever. Majora’s mask had a nice world, but I do feel that the timer was very daunting in dungeons. Majora’s Mask is really good. MM has the best and worst temple of all Zelda games, the worst being Great Bay temple, and the best being stone tower. That’s why the fact it ‘only has 4 dungeons’ never really bothered me because they’re all good, while pretty much all other Zelda games have one or two lackluster ones. sillybajillies I feel like the game should be something like GTA5 [or WindWaker for that matter] where there’s a main storyline and dungeons, but you can work on the story when you want to and there are random people and sidequests that you can meet/begin during or after the main story. I use GTA 5 as my example because Windwaker didn’t really have a lot of NPCs. It felt like the world was mostly dead aside from the 2 town islands. Having random encounters with different NPCs would make the world really come alive. You’d see people interacting with each other in the streets and you could help random people who were being robbed or needed a ride somewhere. It made the world seem dynamic, like your character wasn’t alone. On the topic of being alone, Link always has a singular struggle. In Twilight Princess there was the Resistance, but they could have expanded on them greatly. Hell, where was the army of Hyrule? If there’s one thing I don’t like about most Zeldagames of the past, it’s that you barely get surprised by their structure. You always know ‘OK I made it through the first dungeons, now there’s gonna be some milestone where I’m gonna get the Master sword and then I’ll finish about 5 further dungeons and beat the final boss’. And as soon as Nintendo moves away from that recipe, you’ll get disappointed like with the Triforce Hunt in Wind Waker, although this mainly sucked because I knew they had cut 2 precious dungeons out and replaced them with …this. As Mario is so reduced to it’s platforming gameplay, most attempts to bring stuff like a story into that franchise are usually failing (Sunshine for me didn’t really work on a storytelling perspective, yet surely in terms of gameplay). Zelda on the other hand needs a certain depth, atmosphere, characters and storytelling to properly work and as OoT is still like the last huge milestone to really stand out in terms of its appeal as well as its gameplay, Nintendo should really get rid of some forced paradigms they are carrying around ever since. Zelda games are often more like games that try to step out of OoTs shadow instead of standing on their own feet. Twilight Princess didn’t even try it and looked like a OoT-remake while Skyward Sword was like the desperate attempt to do like everything possible to be different but somehow they still managed to not stand out as much as it needs to be done. After OoT was just like a multiplication of the 2D Zelda-formula, Nintendo should *just* do that once again, which is somehow what many players wanted ever since. I guess Twilight Princess was their attempt to meet that demand, but didn’t really work out for me. So yeah, I think with Oblivion and Skyrim, there are games that already went into that direction, many (not all) Zelda fans wanted that franchise to move on. And at some point when playing Skyrim, I’m also just thinking, if I wanna play open world, I could just stick to skyrim, because Bethesda is quite good at delivering stuff like this. Nintendo should keep doing what they are good at and I don’t really think copying stuff that’s already there is really helping anyone here. The only way to really create a Zelda experience that I would really, truly love was to create something surprising, because that’s just what I’m missing with most things about Nintendo these days. Old franchises, always the same gameplay, every generation gets just a set of stuff that has already been there before. OoT somehow achieved this once again, but somehow built up such an iconic idea of how the Zelda world should look like and moved in such a strong atmospheric, deep, storytelling direction, that Nintendo kinda struggled to move out of that shadow ever since. Every Zelda game ever since had to mess with OoT instead of really moving along and for the mainstream masses, Zelda isn’t what it used to be in the 90ies. It isn’t that superhyped must-play-game anymore. Sure, it still manages to draw attention, but it has become just a good franchise. Yes, I don’t want to be dumped in a world with just a sword and be given absolutely no information, but at the same time, I don’t need Fi telling me I’m low on hearts (Skyward Sword), and I don’t want signs outside dungeons showing me what item to use to solve a puzzle (A Link Between Worlds). Zelda games have almost always have some kind of dual universe. A Link to the Past, OoT, TP, etc. all have a normal and a dark world. MM’s Termina Field is a kind of twisted mirror of OoT’s Hyrule. WW has kind of 2 worlds too, etc. etc. etc. Also, Zelda games have had all kind of artstyles. So imagine if Zelda U had two completely different artstyles for its 2 Worlds. For example, have the ‘normal world’ be super realistic and detailed, and dark, etc., and have the ‘other’ world super cartoony and colorful like WW or SS. Wouldn’t that be amazing? While the desire to make one’s work “their own” by changing it to fit the person’s vision can bring a positive and refreshing change, if done just to satisfy their own convictions, such changes can sometimes bring confusion and dissatisfaction to the people for whom ultimately the work is created. The consumer. I completely agree that the series needs evolve and change in order to stay fresh. I also agree that Zelda titles were becoming too linear (mainly SS, WW to a point). But what I do not agree is to impose an art style just because he loves it and to make changes to the story of Zelda in order to fit Aonuma’s vision of Zelda. The art style to which referring is the cell shade used in WW/SS and the character designed used in it. Personally, I enjoyed the WWHD remake because the engine didn’t look completely like a Saturday morning cartoon. It had a warmer, realistic feeling to it. The character design however, was too childish, for both WW and SS. SS link and some other characters had a good design, but some of the bosses and secondary characters were like straight out of WW and didn’t seem to fit three overall theme of the game. So bosses liked laughable. And don’t get me started on the fourth Goddess and Demise. I mean, it’s called the Triforce for a reason, not the “Tetra-force”. And what’s with that BS by Demise that he I’d going to reincarnate over and over again? He’s not even in possession of the Triforce yet! That tiny plot twist totally undermines the validity and drive of OoT, TP, WW, and any other Zelda game where Ganondorf returns because the Triforce of Power. More than a “non-linear” Zelda, I’d would like to see a mature Zelda game again. By mature I don’t mean “rated M”, by mature I mean having the mature plot, moral dilemmas, and emotional character drives that OoT, MM, TP, and WW have. I want a really hard Zelda experience with a more fleshed out story, and some more in-depth rpg elements to it. Moreover. if you have played a zelda game before, you should know that the games are not similar. I myself did not really appreciate “zelda 2 The Legend of Link” and “The Legend of Zelda a Link to the Past” henceforth one might think that i didn’t really like “The Legend of Zelda a Link Between worlds”. However, that is not how it went about. I enjoyed playing “The Legend of Zelda a Link Between worlds” and i’ll keep that with me as a pleasant memory. Although i like the “formula” of “The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time” were you enter a rather unique dungeon with exquisite lvl design (which Nintendo is amazingly good at). Bottom line, Nintendo should do what they want with the Zelda franchise… but don’t give Link a shotgun… I’m looking at you Naughty dog. warlocknem Zelda II “Adventure” of Link has always been my favorite Zelda game even though better games might have come out in the series. I’ve played them all but that game I guess was the one that made me a fan and follower. That being said I hope Zelda U does follow a more nonlinear open world path like the very first title. I can reconciliation with you… One of my favorite zelda games is “The Legend of Zelda Majora’s Mask”, whom is also considered “a bad game”, mostly because it was rather different from the others… What i wanted to bring forth, was the use of levelling and stats in “zelda 2 The Legend of Link”. Moreover, making it a bit iffy. Bottomline, i personally don’t think leveling and stats belong in a zelda game. That would go a long way in capturing the “sense of wonder” Aonuma mentions; especially with the general video game audience. For better or worse, I feel the more realistic art style is the only chance Wii U has at moving from the GameCube level of sales it is currently tracking towards to a more respectable N64 level. Regardless of which game was better, had Nintendo released Twilight Princess prior to Wind Waker I believe the GameCube would have sold at least 10 million more units in its early years. I know sales do not a good game or system make, but they are important in receiving continued software support on a system. Rockstar spent $250M, 5 years and over 1000 people to bring GTA to market. If Nintendo were to attempt anything CLOSE to this, its shareholders will shit their collective pants. Nintendo has traditionally run a tight ship where its teams are constantly working on multiple projects (main and side projects). For Nintendo to dedicate any amount of resource to 1 game, it has to divert resources from another game. Remember, Nintendo is not a 3rd party developer. It has a console and a handheld to support with games. Based on the current state of the Wii U library, I would say, the more quality games Nintendo gets out, the better because as you can see, the 3rd parties simply don’t want to support it. So to conclude, does Nintendo WANT to make a massively open world Zelda? Sure. Can they realistically make anywhere close to an open-world, non-linear game? They have the talent to do it, but unless they can magically summon up the resources (time and humans) and have shareholder buy-in, I wouldn’t bet on it. Zelda in the 90’s and early 2000’s had that power. Now there are just too many other factors that come into play. People have too many options and the Wii U install base is just not high enough. For a $60 game, Nintendo would need to sell 4.2 million copies to get close to recouping its initial investment f 250M. The current install base is 6 million. Let’s say that when the game comes out, there are 10M Wii U owners (a very aggressive estimate). Nintendo would still need to sell a lot of Zelda for the consoles sold. It’s a big gamble that Nintendo’s shareholders won’t put up with. linxz I don’t disagree. you are right. i think nintendo will have a hard time taking a big risk like that when they can just play it safe with a cheaper production. i doubt they ever went the extra mile with their franchises. we’ll probably never see a big budget production from nintendo…just the same old.
