Not everyone is excited about Nintendo’s new Wii U console. Noted game analyst Michael Pachter said, during his latest Pach Attack show, that Nintendo is late to the scene with the new console, as the Wii U is only marginally more powerful than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Pachter said: “I think that if in fact it’s a lot like an Xbox 360 in terms of graphics, frame rate and control scheme, then it’s probably not going to sell well unless it’s priced a lot cheaper, and I don’t think they’re launching the console at $150.” Later, Pachter compared the Wii U to SEGA’s failed Dreamcast console, which was also quite late to the market and never managed to find a core audience. “So, yeah I think they are about to Dreamcast themselves. I don’t think the Wii U is going to be as popular as probably Nintendo thinks it’s going to be. Question is, what does Nintendo do next, and I don’t know the answer yet. Let’s see how the Wii U sells, and I’m not going to predict this demise until I know pricing and features.” Predicting the Wii U as the next Dreamcast is quite a stretch — the Wii brand is very powerful and Nintendo has a massive software and IP library to take advantage of. However, we do agree with Patcher on one thing: pricing will matter greatly when the Wii U is released. Last week we reported that the Wii U will be priced at $299, and that seems to be the limit of how high Nintendo can go, price wise. To better compete with the Xbox 360 and PS3, price would probably have to be around $250, perhaps even under $200. We’ll see when Nintendo announces more Wii U details, including pricing and launch dates, at E3. local_offer analyst business launch michael pachter Nintendo wii u wii u price stars Further Reading Consumer council in Europe alleges Nintendo i Switch has more games than Wii and Wii U comb uncle lol what a retard he obviously doesnt keep track of what devs say about the wii u Stewox Not a lot of people (who actually understand the tech industry) take this guy seriously – sometimes he can be a jerk and thinks if he went in financial school he knows everything. he’s a finiancial analyst, he provides the stockholders info where they can get the next big money on … it’s all artificial numbers and calculations don’t tell the real picture … pretty much total waste of press time to even mention – i personally was surprised by Wii and motion stuff though i never had animosity to it as im an open minded person not like the 15 year olds who hate everything, if you ask me about WiiU, i can say i see success and a lot of it, the controller is awesome for hardcore gaming, i see nothing but positive in every piece of wiiU news so far. Patcher’s business is to provide that prediction and stockholders buy it, he must have something to say, either if it’s wrong the next day, these predictions are loosely based on weak information he never proved he knew what we already known, and a few statements is a very crappy explanation to come out to say that in the media … give out a full report if you want anyone in the public to even consider your views and opinions, there has been so many stupid speculation by the tech-inexeperienced noobs on neogaf, but Patcher is like the total opposite of the whole community – the only one in the WHOLE spectrum. All i want is my F-zero, Starfox and nintendo first-parties, i don’t care about how stockholders from apple and Patcher will think about it in terms of sales/financial data. The stockholder that told nintendo to do mario on iPhone was an idiot and totally not a fan of nintendo’s legacy – GTFO Fellow nintendo community – we must defend against the apple invadors!!! The most stupid and untalented community ever, a religion of overpriced crap and shitty smartphone crapware. Iwata warned us at GDC 2011. Stewox I didn’t meant all of neogaf is inexperienced, on the contrary, but some of them who know basically nothing (aren’t able to learn), made up 10 pages of wasted debate on many things and many times, that were already obvious and known and pretty much wasting time and making the thread even harder to read so i get a headache reading all that stuff … somewhat should tell us before… Warning: “10 pages of 13old kids discussing specs” ahead I like speculation, but based on rumors we know, other research, adult behavior, and constructive thinking as well as historical experience, i don’t want stupid kids running around saying downright BS about SPECs which don’t make sense. Pretty much the most important debate is the specs and yes the amount of memory … as i am saying this for like half a year, memory memory memory , you can see DICE recently said they want even more … that’s 3 times than i though was fine and enough … and the noobs were like having much lower worry about RAM … even our predictions were for high (hoping for 2 GB as best case scenario) I said (and the community) 1.5 GB is fine , 2 GB is surprise, and 1 GB would not be enough …. but DICE said , 2GB is minimum , 4 GB is splendid (OK) , and 8 GB is extra-surprise ! So you see how things twist … people get their heads heated too prematurely “ahh are you crazy that’ll never happen” … Well guess what i think patcher doesn’t have a clue whatsoever – you have to understand the industry as a whole (tech and gaming and nintendo’s legacy) to understand it completely. And obviosuly the west has bias against everything foreign aswell – the hardcoined patriotism in their blood is a factor as well. Stewox And the thing is …. we allready know stuff what patcher drops a bomb like weeks after We already knew for a long time that WiiU is going to be priced lower than they want … so expect 299. And that’s my own prediction They launched most stuff at 250$ as long as i remember , except Wii which was 300$ with a lot of profit to get back from GCN. but now that’s a much higher spec console targeting higher spending userbase it’s have to be 350$ … but the fact that they don’t want to do this as to not repeat the same mistake of 3DS and also get it to sell faster, they drop it down again to 300$. They might even pull an iwata bomb and have it at 250$ who knows but that’s a possible option though much less probability imo. LyingTuna Wii was 250 at launch. I think that 250 would be ideal for the console launch, if not for the fact that the 3ds launched for it. Amankk We bought our Wii in 2007- my hunsbad went down to Best Buy in the middle of the night and waited on a line that snaked around the building in the hopes of maybe scoring one of these elusive consoles. He DID score one, and we’ve been playing almost daily (which is pretty amazing for a console and games that are more than three years old!) since then. A snap to set up, incredibly easy to use. The Wii-mote is a game control like no other- simply wave it like a magic wand and the sensor bar, which comes with the console, picks up the signal and communicates your position and movement to the Wii so that you can twirl, swoop, smash, lunge, jump your heart away as you play. Our whole family has gotten a lot out of this console. I’m 36, female, and NOT a gamer, and I’ve found myself gravitating towards puzzle games, fishing (!!), the Endless Ocean series, brain teasers, and the Wii Sports Franchise, my daughter (who was a little over one year old when the Wii arrived) has always been able to play along and now is addicted to the many games out for preschoolers (Dora/Diego, the different Disney games- especially Princess and the Frog, Carnival Games, Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort) and my hunsbad, in his 40 s, does everything from Zelda to playing poker on the Wii. We spent a significant amount of time playing together, but we also play alone. I think, in many ways, the Wii has become our family board game . It’s a life saver in summer and during Florida Hurricane Season, when it’s rainy and too hot to go outside. We can all gather together and get our mind off the gloomy weather for a bit. I’ve always had game consoles since I was a little kid- everything from Atari 2600 (which I MOURNED until the Wii came into my life), Super Nintendo, Xbox. The Wii has not only shocked me with how much use it’s getting, but the fact it’s STILL getting so much use- it’s novelty has NOT worn off at all, which is rare for any technology, especially game consoles. I can’t recommend this enough. Definitely a GREAT investment- instead of spending $20-50 for each member of your family on a toy/gadget that loses it’s luster, get the Wii and make everyone happy for a long time. And you will be more than ready to go with both Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. Even though we’ve had both games for a while (we’ve had Wii Sports forever since it came with our Wii), they are still the games my family always goes back to. The WiiU is significantly more powerful than the 360/Ps3 and since hardware hasn’t advanced a lot in the least 2 years, the Ps4/720 will only be marginally more powerful. The ‘720’ is reported to be only 20% faster than the WiiU. The graphics war next-gen will be dead even, Pachter is an idiot. RyanPm40 “Only” 20% faster? That’s quite a bit of a difference.. alienfish Oh, man this guy. You know, I don’t even think he gets paid as an analyst. Microsoft and Sony are probably paying him to spout nonsense about Nintendo. Only kidding. What he doesn’t talk about is how Nintendo is ahead of the curve when it comes to motion games and touch screen games. Skyward Sword just set a new motion control standard by itself. Most of the games on the 3DS only use touch as an option and usually have button controls that can be used as well. I tried that PS Vita Uncharted game and it forces you to use the touch screen which just goes to show how infantile Sony’s devs are when it comes to touch games. Don’t forget the buttons is the main point when using motion controls and touch screens. james braselton hi there i bought the sega dream cast for the vmu 8 mb controller with a lcd screen i want my controllers too have screens Fernando Mattos Stupid. Nintendo is the most wronged company in history. The most part of technologies that we’re using on our games today came from Nintendo. Analogical controls, 3D, body movement in games, etc. I can’t wait to buy my WiiU and play Legend of Zelda. And, plus, Batman, Battlefield, GTA… It’s gonna be the perfect platform. swsfirm Hey P brain. Dont for get the wii u is going to be THE first native HD console. Stop hating… 3rd.Disciple no one should take him serious… Still Apr 1st on the east coast… Anti-hater Squad [AHS] The dreamcast was awesome, just wasn’t very advertised very well and had a bad launch…. random WII U LOVER that is a compliment to nintendo ive never had a dream cast but ive heard it was a very well made ood failed cosle just because a consle failed dosnt mean its bad macnuggets How was the Dreamcast late when it was the first of its generation. Ninty has way more moola than Sega had back then. What a “maroon”. Danny Owens Well, I will do my research to find what console suits my gaming preferences best. So far, it appears to be Nintendo, as it always has. They don’t just make their consoles really really good at one thing, they find what they can do in all areas, incorporate new ideas and old ones, and then build from there. I had an Xbox 360(red ringed after little use), and it was just graphics to me, where as I already have a computer that left it in the dust. Shouldn’t have bought it. Matthew Vogt I personally think that the ouya will screw over the wii u and if you havnt heard about it its just as good as the ps3 and 360 and its going to be only 100 dollarsi i am almost 100 % sure that the wii u will flop but the point that pricing is the fate of the console is VERY!!!!! true but I think the ps4 and 720 is going to have a big advantage over the wii u and honestly the touch screen controller is stupid and you can do that with the vita and ps3 and soon with the 360 and smartglass so…. but seriously though check out the ouya it is a game console that is running android 4.0 that is coming out next year and if you donate a certain amount to start the project you can get in december LyingTuna Well, I think Nintendo is pulling a Dreamcast. Not in the sense that it’s going to fail in the market, but that it’s first of its gen, will have a screen on its controller, will have good games, will use discs, will be made of atoms, and will have buttons. I don’t think it will be the big N’s demise. Nobody does. Patcher is just an idiot.
