May 1st, 2013

When the official unveil and press release for Call of Duty: Ghosts hit earlier today, Activision made no mention of the Wii U. The only umbrella term used was that the game is confirmed for next-gen consoles and a live preview will be available at the next Xbox unveiling on May 21st. The Examiner contacted Activision and received a response when asked whether or not the game would be coming to Wii U:

“We don’t have any news for the Wii U at this time, as we aren’t dating next generation platforms yet. Stay tuned.”

There you have it. Unlike EA, Activision is classifying the Wii U as a next-gen system and it will be making announcements about the Wii U whenever it decides to make official announcements about the next Xbox and PlayStation 4. Stay tuned, as we expect more information will be given after May 21.

I’m not a big fan of the series but this game sounds better than the rest.
(well, even if we don’t have a lot of information!)

  • incoherent1

I’m cool with that. It could be a number of things: e.g.

-they are going to release all next gen at the same time and can’t do that until they know when MS and Sony release their consoles
-they aren’t sure due to development timelines
-waiting to see how Wii U sales do in the meanwhile before deciding to announce it

My guess is in that order of probability. Either way, they *responded*, which is a good sign. If the response to a Wii U question was silence, that would’ve been a very bad omen.

    • jay

wait for when sony/ms to release their consoles?

No thanks. I’d hate another Rayman Legends situation.

p.s. im not excited for this game but it still wouldn’t be fair to Wii U owners who are.

  • Anthony Gittens

THANK YOU…EA must not realize that Wii U is Next Gen in many aspects. They better not try to apologize when Retro Studios show the world why the U is truly next gen!!!!!!

    • incoherent1

EA is out to lunch on many things. I have friends who bought Sim City and, frankly, if that’s the calibur of game they’re producing, they can keep skipping the Wii U indefinitely.

Maybe their new CEO will impose better QC and dev policies — one can hope.

    • NkoSekirei

and EA doesnt realize their abunch of idiots that couldnt get their with origin not being on wii u which no one likes origin at all

      • Anthony Gittens

        Exactly they could keep Origin.

    • Eduardo

EA stands for “Extinct Assholes” because that’s what there becoming.

    • Super Buu

No, they don’t realize the Wii U is next gen because they have their heads so far up their asses that they can’t reason anymore.

      • Destructonator101

They just thought that their asses were hats.

    • bizzy gie

I just have to ask. Did EA go crying to Xbox and PlayStation about running Origin on their platforms? If not, that’s not fair. If so, when they both said “no” did EA throw as much of a tantrum as they are throwing now?

      • jay

        Beat me to it.

Are they skipping sony/ms because origin isn’t running on their systems also?

      • Arthur Jarret

No. Then again, Xbox and playstation’s online servers aren’t based on EA’s online servers either – whereas Nintendo asked developers for their expertise and EA jumped in.

However, when Nintendo wanted to compensate EA for their troubles, rumors are they got greedy and tried to get a contract signed where they would control nintendo’s servers. Of course, nintendo said NO and that’s when EA started throwing their temper tandrum.

    • Nintedward

Indeed this is good of Activision.

Of course the Wiiu is next gen , cus it sure as hell IS NOT in the same generation as the PS3 , 360 , Wii … Who ever suggested that ever needs to go and cry themselves to sleep in a damp corner.

    • atl hawks

    • wiiucompl

Take it easy. Games for the Wii U will come out. Just look who need employees with knowledge of the Nintendo … 🙂

      Just look at screenshots:

  • Mark Thom

  • So Activision is the only company that realizes that the Wii U is a Next Gen console… kind of strange isn’t it ._. … Usually they’d be sucking up the Microsoft but for them to state that the Wii U is Next Gen is awesome but strange at the same time… I’m not used to Activision saying something good about a Nintendo Platform before ._.

    • DragonSilths

They used to be really good with Nintendo. N64 days man.

  • Frank

Hopefully it’s not the same thing like all other releases after Modern Warfare; it needs a re-invention for both and series and fps in general. Hopefully Ghost means a lot of stealth is involved and can play a key role in the game

  • Name

Hate how people forgot that the wii u is next gen

    • NkoSekirei

cause they dont read articles really well do to living under their bridges

      • Destructonator101

and living under their rocks. its good activision has some respect, unlike ea…………

  • DragonSilths

Activision was once great with Nintendo. They just let their ego go outta control for awhile. While they make a lot of mistakes when they don’t make a mistake they are still great. Activision puts there shit on everything though. The biggest Activision announcement I’m waiting for is Bungies Destiny coming to Wii U.

    • jay

Screw that. I’m waiting for Retros announcement.

    • Quicksilver88

So far Bungie has said no so I guess we will have to wait and see as maybe activision will farm it out for port like Square/Enix is doing with Dues EX

  • Hopefully Activision & Infinity Ward will give the Wii U version the same treatment as the other platforms. We’ll see if that happens or not.

In any case, I’ll just rent this game for the campaign. Until further notice, this is a case of different color, same thing. And that is not going to help with the next gen consoles and games coming out this holiday.

  • Zuxs13

Thank you Ashley for getting on top of this. Good job!

  • Ace J

i have to give Activision some respect for saying the wii u is next gen

    • NkoSekirei

because wii u is next gen console and its packs more power then ps3 and 360 and it hasnt been fully tapped it of is full potential which well see in coming games mid to later this year

    • jay

Well they’re just stating the obvious.

I would go as far as calling Wii U Current gen since, well, its already out.

      • Levi Johansen

        Yeah, PS360 is now last-gen.

2012 is the first year in the next generation, well that is the current…

Of course, the PS360 is getting most next-gen/current-gen games, atleast so far. This might ruin the sales of PS4 and 720…. just saying.

At the same time, Wii owners realise that the Wii is not getting any new games and then buys a Wii U.

E3 this year will turn everything around and the Wii U will be the console to own for great 3rd party games, great indy-games and great exclusive games and innovative gameplay.

Everybody else will keep playing last-gen consoles.

    • SoulSilverZero

Having some support from them is better than getting no support from Activision at all.

  • Potemkin

    Well, better than nothing.

  • Barters

“no news for the Wii U” means Nintendo will announce it at a Nintendo Direct soon. That’s all…..

“It’s not coming to the Wii U” MEANS it’s not coming.

    • Of it could mean that they don’t want Nintendo whiners talking just yet. One minute they hate of the series, next they are mad that it’s not coming, then they are happy that it might be coming. DO you see why Nintendo and it’s ‘fans’ get no respect?

      • Silent

Cool story bro. I almost fell for it. Of course, you dont mean anything you say. Its not your fault. Btw, Sony fans have a WORSE reputation than Nintendo fans do. So next time, correct that to your story.

      • Sidney Majurie

Meanwhile “non Nintendo fans” spend countless hours on pro Nintendo websites, Nintendo videos, and Nintendo comment threads crying about Nintendo. LOL, we should be on your level…

        • jay

          He’s obviously a little kid.

He doesn’t have a job or a life. He’s just the clown around here no one to take serious.

        • Quicksilver88

You know I just don’t get that…..i own all systems and come to Wii-U sites to see whats hapenning and chat with other enthusiests…..when I get ps4 I will do the same on their specialty sites….i just don’t get why people troll. In my mind the obviously are not real gamers just a bunch of jerks!

          • Sidney Majurie

That’s exactly how I am and I couldn’t agree more. As a Nintendo fan, I will defend Nintendo when I feel it’s needed but I also have an Xbox and PS3. I don’t bash them even when it’s justified. I find that only Sony or Xbox only gamers act like this. I think that says a lot.

      • Jimmy D. Fugate

I don’t hate the series, but let’s get real….not much has changed much in the way of COD….the multiplayer and zombies is all it really has going for it. And the same thing happened with PS360 owners and Rayman Legends: *Announced as Wii U exclusive “WHY THE HELL IS THAT A WIIU EXCLUSIVE?! THAT’S NOT FAIR!” *A couple months later “Well, it’s just Rayman, there are a lot of other games we have coming this year…” *loses exclusivity “YES WE GET RAYMAN HAHAHAHAHA SUCK IT NINTENDRONES”….that sir, is hypocrisy at it’s finest. I have respect for other console owners and don’t mind it losing exclusivity but don’t act like Wii U owners are the only ones guilty of this.

        • ggg

same with bayonetta, though no change there for sony and ms fanboys.

      • jay

        “Nintendo whiners”

        ummm isn’t that YOU kiddo?!!

Correct me if I’m wrong but in every damn Wii U article you’re whining about Nintendo.

      • Barters

I’m not even sure what point your trying to make and how it relates to aboriginal statement.

  • It still does not say that it will be on Wii U! We know it is coming on Xbox Infinity and of course PS4, since Wii U is all that is left, why not just say it? I know, they are going to do an Xbox event but still.

    • Silent

      ”of course PS4”

    • Wat.

    • Jimmy D. Fugate

Still doesn’t make sense that the Wii U logo is on the official site.

    • Alex

They will release the WiiU version since they even release a lot of their CoD on the old DS.

    • jay

  • MujuraNoKamen

Good to see them see Wii U as next gen (as they should) and on on the official site there is a Wii U logo along with all the other platforms’ logos so it looks like it will come to Wii U and be the same version as PS4/720 🙂

  • prettypinkpanacea

    This is a test message.

    • prettypinkpanacea

Wow. It actually went through for once.

    • prettypinkpanacea

      • Nintedward

Crytek make fps on WiiU too and they want maybe Time Splitter HD collection exclusive wiiu but maybe WiiU/PS4 too but for ps4 not sure again…

    for Crisis 3 it’s not Crytek it’s EA…

  • jD10

I hated to see in the Watch_Dogs trailer that it said xbox360, ps3, wiiu and coming to next gen consoles.

    • jay

That’s because those console ARE NOT OUT YET. Wii U already was

    • The Clockwork Being

It shouwed PS4 so that makes two next gen consoles(WiiU and PS4)

  • bizzy gie

Infinity Ward is back! Is this a sequel to the Modern Warfare or Black Ops series?

  • Jeovany

Its going to be on the wii u. Call duty on every console, even the ds

    • jay

that’s what I’ve been telling people.

  • Squid

I hate CoD, but I have to say I’m extremely glad that they have a Next Gen version even coming to Wii U! ^.^

  • Archiq09

    Next Gen “horrible word” ><

    • jay

      “H@rDc0R3 gamer” “Mature gamer”

  • Pikachief

I don’t understand why or how the wii U being next gen is even a question or argued about. It’s the next generation Nintendo console. If it reverted back to N64 graphics it would still be next gen because its the next generation of Nintendo consoles.

Also when another console comes out you’re supposed to think “okay, if I’m going to buy a new machine what can this do that my previous console can’t do?” If you just increase graphics, you can’t say “oh well it couldn’t play this game before!” if you could run it on a previous console by just downplaying the graphics a bit.

NES -> SNES. shoulder pads, more buttons and new graphics options that actual expand on gameplay options.

SNES/genesis -> N64/PS1. Analog sticks, memory cards, discs, triggers, full 3D gameplay.

N64/PS1 -> Gamecube/Xbox/PS2. Cleaner graphics and faster systems that helps bring us a different experience to games such as racing and first person shooters. Also a good introduction to online gaming.

GC/Xbox/PS2 -> 360/PS3. A big jump into online gaming. lots of DLC, updates, nice big and customizable operating system. Streaming videos and downloading whole game straight to your console.
Wii on the other hand brought us most of that along with a new play style of motion controls which the other 2 competitors adopted later on in the console’s life cycle.

360/PS3/Wii -> 360/PS3/Wii U. Enhanced and integrated social networking capabilities. Wii U has brought us new ways to play games. PS3 allows for streaming of games, but in terms of gameplay, games just look prettier as far as I’m confirmed. Xbox has yet to be shown.

As far as I’m concerned, unless microsoft proves differently, Nintendo is the only one who’s making the jump into the Next Generation of consoles. I want a reason other than social networking, non-gaming, and prettier games to buy a console.

    • jay

No need to explain. In gaming media common sense is thrown out the window.

Just watch that g4 crap for reference.

    • Nintedward

This. We Nintendo fans have been stating it right from the start as the fact that is. And using the PS1 VS n64 arguments……

The gaming media/community is just packed full of embarassing idiots , like Pachter…

    • atl hawks

      *PS4* sorry

      • Pikachief

Oh thanks! With all the acronyms being thrown around I was bound to mess at least one up hahaha

    • Super Buu

This is pretty much what I keep telling people.

    • AJ Chioino

and then we are going to see those trolls who say “the gamepad is just a gimmick!” lol. some people cease to [amaze] me.

    • greengecko007

That’s because simply being the next installment does not make it next gen, in a similar way that the DSlite and DSi were not next gen. Generally, next gen, across all platforms, is a new product that brings great improvements. In the video game industry this is generally determined by hardware, what type of media is used to play games, etc.

The Wii U is absolutely next gen. It is different from the Wii in that it has greatly improved hardware, and uses different specialized discs to play games.

  • Robknoxious1

    Respect…… finally.

  • dumbest trailer on earth

  • Johny

Although it really shouldnt even be a discussion issuing whether to call wii u a “next gen” console, its still refreshing to hear stuff like that, because ALOT of people on the internet are just retards

  • Waluigi of Duty!!!

  • Cadrion

Modern combat sim installment #452- I’m not really all that excited, back to smb u 🙂

  • Møhåmmęd Jårmøn

I hate EA but I really want Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14 on WiiU…

  • Xavier Lopez Chabelo

Well… at least is going to use a new engine….. right?

  • Antar Rodríguez

if it comes for wii u and doesnt support dlc or the wiiu community i wont even bother buying it

  • Nickdawg

I think Activision is doing some smart business here, they see that third party developers are not jumping on the bandwagon, except Ubisoft, but all the people who bought WiiU’s are heralding Ubisoft as amazing developers just because the support in general, not even the content, so Activision is going to be releasing WiiU games and praise the console to win the fans over, I don’t even LIKE Call of Duty and I’m totally buying this game.

  • Wren Justin Umlauf

I never thought I’d say this… But I finally respect Activision more than EA. I guess the only thing I dont like about Activision is that they kinda killed a few good series. Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, and honestly I think a yearly release of Call of Duty is too much. I just wish DICE wasnt under EA because I love their games and want them on Wii U

  • Kirzan

We need more articles about this topic.

  • Justis Bistawros

Man this is great i am so exited i would just like to say this announcement i love ubisoft i love activision and i love any other third party company that supports the wii u with great games.

  • mad man

i wont buy it lag switchers have ruined peer to peer gaming no matter what the platform or game it sucks but cheaters have now killed your entire gaming world no wonder why so many think the economy will come to a halt.

    • Morits Lian

It’s ok to fanboy, just don’t overdo it.

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Does this mean the Wii U version of COD: Ghosts will be more upgraded than the 360 & PS3 version, such as improved graphical features and more content – giving the significantly larger disc capacity? Here’s hoping 🙂

    • Morits Lian

The Wii U version of Need For Speed: Most Wanted had the graphics from the PC version and I hope this could be true for this game, too.

  • Sam Muir

    Recent Update: Good news for COD Ghosts Wii U version;

  • Michael Jurado

wow not even a year between black ops II and the next CoD game -_-

  • The problem I have with the Call of Duty series is that it has pushed modern/future games for too long. I understand there are those that like modern war games but there should be a break from it after x-amount of games and make a WW2 Call of Duty. Lets hope this new Call of Duty is WW2(or Vietnam) and not just a Modern Warfare spinnoff.
